I have seen stuff like this before but mainly with cars. Which makes more sense since you have the car’s body to protect. Even with that, it can lead to permanent damage. But throwing yourself against a moving vehicle? Gotta be incredibly desperate, intoxicated or stupid to go for it.

I’ll say this. I had a friend in elementary school. I wasn’t allowed to go to his house all my childhood and he wasn’t never allowed at mine. It was activity told to me “HE WILL NEVER COME ON OUR PROPERTY OKAY?” I didn’t know why for a decade. I found out. His parents basically made a living suing peoples parents. They would have a kid come over and he’d break something they sue his parents. You let him come over he was taught to get hurt or break a bone so his parent could sue. The really money in insurance fraud comes from suing trucking companies, not regular drivers. There's a lawyer in Texas named Jim Adler and he's made a decades long career out of it. Trucking companies have to carry a large amount of insurance specifically for this reason, and from what my dad told me after 20+ years in the industry is that most of the time they'll just settle the case instead of fighting it in court, because of how much money it can cost and what they stand to lose. People usually just take $10k - $30k and call it a day.

My mom didn’t see him, but luckily I did, and told her to hit the breaks. There was an awkward 5 seconds were he just sat there staring at us before he went around us. I was on jury for a car accident lawsuit and it was a guy backing out of a spot while a guy was driving by (in a drive thru). The man tried to claim the accident (driving by) caused an injury to worsen but with all the evidence we figured it didn't do shit and the judge told us after the trial that he's been suing everyone for everything. They were asking for 150k and extra payments for the next 5 years. (Long story short, it was wild for two days of trial)

I was riding home on my moped a few years back and a drunk driver t-boned me. I woke up two days later in the hospital with seven broken bones in my left hand and arm, extreme swelling on my left side from internal bleeding and some brain damage and memory loss. They kept me two additional days to keep an eye on the internal bleeding that thankfully stopped on its own and they'd patched up my arm and hand with plates and screws while i was still unconscious so they were also tending to my stitches. I received a bill of $78,000 before they discharged me. They charge per 10th ounce of neosporin, for every Q-tip, bandaid, cotton swab on top of all the procedure necessary to keep me from dying that night. Of course the medication and physical therapy I had to do for nearly six months after racked up tens of thousands more in medical debt all this while I was not allowed to work until the doctor cleared me.
Now here's how the money works, for starters, you better hope the dope who almost ended your life has good insurance. The drunken fool who hit me had liability, state minimum. Hes only a few years older than me, I believe he was 24 or 25 at the time. This guy owned nothing, there were no assets simply the Missouri state minimum which is $50k. Sounds good, Right? No. You'll need a lawyer to get anywhere, thankfully mine didn't charge upfront and would accept payment to be deducted out of the settlement, that's one third gone. Then, during the months while you wait on the legal system the hospital or any medical professional you see for the related injuries have the opportunity to put a "lean" on your settlement, they get half of your settlement and have to take that as 'paid in full'. That's another third gone. And at last, six months later when I'm sleeping on friends couches and giving them childcare so I can have any small semblance of income they finally call with your settlement and after taxes are considered, you're handed roughly 14 grand. But wait, it doesn't end there. Turns out only the pharmacy and physical therapy office had reached out for that lean and had to split it amongst themselves, the original hospital bill of 78k is still my responsibility. So all in all if I ever hope to pay that medical debt, it's about $64,000 loss.
I'd assume doing it for sport has to simply be out of passion, they're not gaining financially from this. Not in the grand scheme of things.

As far as cameras for your vehicle, just worry about a front camera. If someone rear ends you, they almost always lose, it protects you if someone slams on their breaks and if someone hits your rear, they'll either have a camera proving their own wrongdoing, but it's generally assumed the one causing the accident is the person hitting the rear.

I’m not saying this is what happened in your case but I was in a low speed accident (we were side swiped) and I was looking to my right when it happened. I felt totally good immediately after. I had no pain at all anywhere but then two days later I woke up and I couldn’t look straight forward. I was stuck looking right. It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I don’t know if this is true but the dr said it was from the accident and the way he explained it is something shifted during the accident causing swelling, over the two days it worsened and it pinched a nerve in my neck/back. So muscle relaxers, Percocet, stretching, and physical therapy fixed me up although I occasionally like once every few years get a muscle spasm in my back where I was initially injured and I again can’t look forward (not nearly as painful ibuprofen, ice and rest work fine) most days though I just have general mild pain in the area and numbness and tingling down my arm on the affected side. It sucks but I’ll live and I definitely didn’t sue anyone over it. Just made me a bit sad when you said she was fine after so therefore she’s lying. I genuinely thought I came out unscathed but then all that shit happened. Again I’m not saying this is what happened in your situation just saying injuries can occur and progressively worsen over time. The guy who hit us doesn’t even know I was injured. Idk I don’t see the point in suing unless it’s really serious shit.

I've honestly never understood how this works at all in the US. I work insurance. If there is essentially any suspicious circumstance at all or the situation is unclear. You can denied outright or at least have to go through a lot more hoops to get your money. Also most insurance pay out based on police reports. So if the policy report you did something on purpose, you normally get nothing.
Also, I live in Michigan where insurance companies are a lot more willing to pay out most of the time. I can't imagine how this works in other states that don't have no fault laws.

People will run up medical bills to help their case and just not pay them or they are using insurance/medicaid to cover majority of the cost. So ultimately it is entirely worth it for them, not super difficult to figure that out.

My guess is that these idiots see it on tv, & think it's as easy as rolling up in a wheelchair & a neckbrace, when in reality, it's a long court process, where you have to pay quite a bit of money for your lawyer & doc to lie for you, which, wont be cheap, since I'm pretty sure the doctor can lose his medical license if he's found out.
