    The irony of calling 320 × 200 with an index of 16 colors a "Super Hi-Res" format...

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 6 років тому +17

      The hardware was very advanced for its time, and it specialised in graphics and sound.
      If you consider how big a BMP or WAV file can be, and then consider that computers of the time didn't have the processing power for anything much more complex than such a thing (AKA no compression at all), 320x200 is actually quite impressive for the RAM.
      With something like a Commodore 64 (which was a few years older, but still a contemporary), you had to choose between that many colours or that much resolution - you couldn't do both. And the IIGS can do 640x200 as well, though this SHR file format didn't support it.

      AI is adobe illustrator, right? Yeah, I wouldn't want to get the creative cloud suite/programs unless I needed it for like a business or something. DOCX I'm pretty sure you can upload to Gdrive and press open with google docs and it will make a copy in the google docs format. I don't know what CDR is, but I'll go look it up.

      Quick check online tells me cdr is another vector format. Like AI, if I wouldn't want to pay for the special program unless I would use it all the time for a business. I know my mom is going to get Adobe CC for hers, and I'm probably going to use premier do edit my videos when I start making more videos for my channel.

    Just one thing you forgot to take into account: the Apple IIGS's use of rectangular pixels. A normal 4:3 aspect ratio display with square pixels would be 320x240 resolution, but the IIGS uses 320x200, so each pixel is slightly taller than it is wide. That's why your cat photo looked stretched out vertically when displayed on the IIGS.

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 6 років тому +5

      On the Amiga, Super Hi-Res was 1280x256 up to 256 colours but that was only available to AGA Amigas such as the A1200 and A4000, Super Hi-Res laced was 1280x512.
      I still think those modes aren't emulated in UAE yet...
      But yeah, 320x200 was Low Res NTSC on the Amiga.

      "Retina resolution"

    • @Apple2gs
      @Apple2gs 5 років тому

      To be fair, Super-Hi-Res consists of two modes: 640x200 and 320x200. The latter of which was sometimes referred to as "Medium Super-Hi-Res" for its lower resolution. Also worth noting, it was only limited to 16 colors per *SCANLINE* (not screen), with each assigned its own unique palette, thereby allowing it to support up to 256 colors per screen with no software trickery or speed penalties. On that level, it even gave it an edge over the OCS Amiga. It's also relative speaking of course, considering the original Apple II in 1977 was 280x192 for "High-Res", so in 1986 "Super" aptly described 640x200.

      I'd love to see a USB floppy that could read (and maybe write) any disk format, just download the driver (or filetype) and there you go.
      See also...
      5.25" inch drives
      3" drives (and yes, I mean 3" drives and *NOT* 3.5" inch drives, the ones used by Amstrad)
      And MiniDisc drives that can read and write to any MiniDisc format as either a Music MD (including converting to the relevant ATRAC codec) or a Data MD.

    Oh the Newton does have a serial port? I think the closest on my Palm was IRDA, though... no, I do have an RS-232 dock for it.
    LOL! This computer we all knew was great for artists and typesetting can't even open BMP? Ah... I know what it is: The tendency of operating system authors in those days to delegate the provision of anything useful to third-party providers, and to hate standardization wherever they could get away with it. I'm saying this as someone who lived through the era; Windows was just as bad. One of the greatest things about Linux for me was the file format support in all the free programs. As crude and confusing as MPlayer was, it was a thing of wonder when every video codec on Windows required software from a different provider.
    Gimp was very good in file type support too, although it wasn't scriptable in those days. All I had for scripting image modifications was the the netpbm utilities with their confusingly irregular naming and options, or Image Magick which I didn't like for some reason. With netpbm, the image was processed through pipes and it could be tricky to find the right commands to display the finished result. Not Fun!
    It wasn't too long before Python got the GD image library, but I was going through a weird phase where I wanted to do everything with Unix pipes. I got hold of Plan 9 From Bell Labs before too long which solved the problem by having a nice, regular and useful set of command-line image tools. Another nice thing about Plan 9 is that you can read images straight from the window system. I once scaled and cropped an image using the window system and an image viewer, then removed the border (4 pixels all round) and converted it to PNG with 2 little command-line tools.
