What was the Microsoft MiPad?

- Today, in the final installment of PocketPC Month, we take a look at the Microsoft MiPad, an experimental product from the early 2000s sort of like a proto-Siri, as well as Microsoft Voice Command, the actual product to eventually release from the MiPad research.

Ok, when you said 'that one' and it played, that was pretty neat
"Upload the video, dummy"
"Do a face reveal"
"Enjoy the copyright strike"
This kind of humor is why I love The Science Elf. You deserve 100K subscribers!
***rejects the 1st line and 3rd line***
aaand
xLucky Sinz are you fucking stupid? This comment is 2 years old fucktard
"Enjoy the copyright strike." Wait what?!
Replaced the Album name in the meta data. :)
Can we copystrike the Science Elf?
Could've also edited the audio in. (Like recording it from the appointment app, then editing it in)
ITS BECOMING SELF AWARE!!!!!!!
You mean elf aware?
"processor was far too weak so it was sent to a server"
You mean like literally every device now
haha
Yup. Like every device now that isn't using Dragon Dictate.
"Enjoy your Copyright strike"
Me: Ah yes, I remember that album. Classic Beatles 😏
PEELZboy Plays this was so subtle i burst into laughter
"Do a face reveal"
*snooze*
U beat LGR to something
True
Oh, he just threatened him that if he beats him to it again, he is going to lit his woodgrain PC on fire...
VIDEOJACKING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!
haha ha
Speaking of ahead of it's time, there was a project in the early 90's called WinPad. I think the idea of WinPad was to make a tablet PC version of Windows as opposed to the Windows for Pen Computing version of Windows 3.1.
They should sue apple, since they sued xiaomi for having a tablet called MiPad
Sue apple for what tho
iPad
star of duty ye
That's not how it works... The iPad is a tablet, the MiPad was a tablet trying to piggyback on the name. This "mipad" is completely different.
XD This was Funny "Do A Face Reveal" "Enjoy The Copyright Strike"
At one point he plays a song called four guys and also I am just sitting here both of which are credited to the Beatles but they are from from a fan made Beatles album called Everyday Chemistry. The uploaded of the album claims he got it from a parelel universe were the Beatles never broke up.
"parallel universe" this is some the sun vanished shit right here
Daniel11420 actually he said he tripped over and woke up in a parallel universe were some guy gave him the album and teleported him back into are universe. Tldr: it's bullshit
I think the voice recognition system you demonstrated on the iPaq is related to the one my car (Fiat 500) uses to manage Bluetooth. It does say in the car that it's powered by Windows CE.
I used to own a Audivox XV6600 with Windows Pocket PC. At the time one of the few Pocket PCs with Verizon service. I loved it, before the days of IPhone it was one of the best devices I’ve owned thanks for the video
Microsoft is gonna copyright strike xaiomi over 'MiPad'.
I love how the end card theme is just Sample 1 on a loop.
Who else though it was going to be pronounced Me pad?
Eric Chandler Yeah, I was thinking about XiaoMi rather than My.
MePhone Four.
MiiPad.
Hell yeah
me
The Voice Assistant is better then S Voice on my Note 4. xD
You nailed it bro... excellent video, I can't critique, add, or take away a single thing. Flawless Victory!
6:26 They sound to me like they're the startup and shutdown sound for some Microsoft Plus theme.
E X P A N D D O N G
"TaKe ViAgRa, DuMmY"
Stop!
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of that! XD
lets gt it to 69 likes
😆🙃☺🙃☺
what a great video!
keep going like that!
Ah, I always love a new System Dwarf video.
Huh, this is what is on Ford Sync, circa 2015. It’s built on Windows Auto which is CE/Mobile at heart.
love your vids, keep it up!
i literally dropped everything to watch yer video, lol
i also realized that this is the point in time that nobody could have watched this video in its entirety
I wish modern phones would read calendar reminders out loud. Those were SO USEFUL! Instantly hearing and knowing what I had to do in 15 minutes without having to look at a screen was so much better than the unintelligible sound effects we have today.
Great video!
After watching this and bring introduced to the mi pad concept. I wonder if any of it was utilised and updated and used in cortana?
wow so many bonzi references
Can you Make a Video about The history of the Wi-Fi? i Really love communicating with the wi-fi!
Nice music for the outro
What you don`t seem to know is that Microsoft used software from a company named Lernout & Hauspie. They had software called Voice Express that microsoft wanted to implement into Windows. They worked together on that until in 2001 when L&H went bankrupt. This software went to Dragon systems who licenced it to the CIA and NSA. So the technology dissapeared from view and Microsoft could not use it anymore.
Now Apple uses the same software for Siri. The voice of Siri is of a Belgian woman who worked for L&H. How do I know this? Because I worked for L&H in the late 90`s until 2001.
Voice Express worked way better than this. Also we had direct translation programs where you speak in one language, and in another language somebody else would hear they`re pc speaking to them. What Google only now can do. A shame L&H went broke.(and that`s a whole other story)
Greetings, NicoD(Check my youtube page for SBC reviews, click my face...)
While an interesting read, the voice of Siri would seem to be Susan Bennett, who is American. Perhaps for the Belgian voice they used this Belgian woman's files?

Translation for Dutch...
Anyone who has a phone from the Apple brand will certainly know it. The digital person Siri who knows the answers to all your questions. The Flemish Libelia Desplenter gives her voice to Siri but actually did not know anything about it. "Suddenly, journalists called me to tell me that," it sounds.
She has worked at Studio Brussel and has a beautiful voice and perfect pronunciation. Her name is Libelia Desplenter and when she opens her mouth, she sounds very familiar. That's right, because she's one of the voices on the Apple devices and the woman also gives her voice to GPS brands. "I think TomTom and Garmin use my voice," she says. And indeed 'thinks', because no one ever asked her for permission.
"Twenty years ago I worked for Lernout & Hauspie. They made me the voice of the 'text to speech system' there. For example, someone could have their e-mails read aloud by telephone or something. But then that was all science fiction, "she says. "Almost nobody had a cell phone or e-mail address, so for me that was also very abstract. And then the company went bankrupt and my vote was sold. "
Also this.
The company Nuance has designed Siri. This company had some of the technology from L&H. L&H was divided in parts and sold to different companies.
www.tijd.be/nieuws/archief/de-bloeiende-erfenis-van-l-h/9210731.html
Here`s the translation of the most important part.
Lernout is also proud. Because the success of Nuance is built on the legacy of L & H. In 2005 Nuance merged with Scansoft, the company that bought the bulk of the patents and technology from the bankruptcy of the fallen Flemish speech technology rock. "The way in which voice recognition is done now is the same as with L & H. Nothing revolutionary has been invented. Statistical language models are still the basis. Nuance has further improved it, added more accents and dialects, and increased vocabulary. And they did that with more focus. At L & H we were dealing with too many different things. '
And here icle from I think 99 where Microsoft invests in L&H. It`s still Belgian Francs so before 2000.(1997 I see now) That`s from before they started working together. Can`t really find much online. Seems a lot has been removed.

BRUSSELS - Microsoft, the largest software company in the world, will buy $ 45 million (1.7 billion francs) of shares in Lernout & Hauspie (L & H). This participation must support the far-reaching technological cooperation with the Ypres speech technology producer (DS September 11). The agreement opens the door to the global PC market for L & H wide open.
,, This agreement is the definitive breakthrough for L & H '', commented co-founder Pol Hauspie yesterday, the accession of Microsoft to his company. It is the first time that Microsoft has entered into a strategic alliance with a European company. Moreover, the chairman of Microsoft Europe, the Frenchman Bernard Vergnes, gets a seat on the board of directors of Lernout & Hauspie.
The software giant also announced yesterday that it is pumping 3 million dollars (112 million francs) in the Flanders Language Valley Fund. This fund provides venture capital to companies that come to settle on the speech technology campus in Ypres. Patrick De Smedt, director of Microsoft Benelux, becomes director of the fund.
@kit vitae Do you believe me now? Indeed can be that it`s the Dutch Siri. It says she`s one of the voices
Damn dude, what was that badass song on the end screen?
Its interesting how my ipaq with a gsm case could do more than an iphone could, about 5 years before the iphone was released. It had a fingerprint reader about 10 years before the iphone, and a stylus which i think the iphone still doesnt have. The only thing that comes close to this is a samsung note, but even that doesnt have the right click / long tap functionality.
Styluses are obsolete.
Wait Take the m away and you get an iPad.
*X files theme*
So youre saying if I get one of these and cut it in half, it turns into an iPad?
Sub G theoretically
What's the piece of music that starts at 3:36? Reminds me of The Sims 1.
6:21 one of the most beautiful eXPeriences of my life
I Really like ur videos
It would very awesome if u upload more faster
I am astounded, I had to make an American accent, enunciating everything in late 2000's. Now, I can speak in my own accent and at normal pace.
Hm... what an interesting topic, hope to find out more about the MiPad
Did you give The science elf permission to use his video?
FOR THE LULZ!1!
This PDA voice Bonzi Buddy.
he protecc
he attacc
but most importantly
ipacc
"Expand dong"
I AM FUCKING DYING
Yay! A new vid
Make a filming on web browsing on that handheld through Opera Mini.
Wow voice commands on computers have come a long way.
that ipaq slays
I instantly had the Xiaomi MiPad in my mind when seeing this xD
Nice
To be honest..., It is even better than (Note8) Bixby which is sometimes... most of the time... very slow in response, no voice responding and more problems in recognizing my commands. Samsung engineer should see this video. Microsoft did it in like decade ago better.
get/use google assistant =p
Bixby works well
Bixby is trash, but this isn't even close to Bixby. Be serious.
A man of culture, listening to Everyday Chemistry
Were is that face reveal? xd 1.027 view
"Ooohoohooh yeah!"
What if I would call the phone number featured in this Video 🤔🤔🤔
What is the diffrence between voice commands and Microsoft Cortana?
On sale next summer 2019
I can confidently say that I've never been this early
I tend to feel like Microsoft has done a ton of experimental research but even when they bring out products they are kind of lackluster. But some are amazing, look at Microsoft Comic Chat, an IRC client that used 2D avatars that reacted to what you said. Pretty cool.
Jack Kraken Microsoft's research side really does make a lot of cool stuff. Unfortunately, Microsoft has been very poor at monetising these ideas or nurturing them.
I want a proper voice recognition in google docs. Now it can't recognize between text, numbers and signals
Funny thing is speech recognition still isn't perfect I still get errors now and then and they can lead to very funny results
4:51 nice
how do i put the email onto the internet thingy
Please tell me where to find 10 hours of "oooooh yeah!"
You need more subs
Impresiv tech for the age =D
When I saw that thumbnail, I thought that this is "Leaked" Nintendo NX
The worst part of this device was it didn't have wifi, only Bluetooth.
For internet, you'd need to leave it plugged into a wired basestation, or find a Bluetooth Internet router, or purchase a wifi compactFlash (tiny router built into a cf card) or wifi SD card (don't think these were out yet) and hope that it could interface somehow.
Never could afford one though.
4:16 - "Please watch your step. Have a canape... shrimp toast... cavi-ar..."
Almost the exact same voice... Name that movie.
Wow! Nice face reveal! (And I guess nice video too.)
download link for sample 1 .wav plz
Sounds like something xiaomi would make
ua-cam.com/video/JHn4bARy5bQ/v-deo.html
Nice room ya got there. I see the bookshelf, the painting, and the computer in the reflection of the IPaq's buttons. EDIT: Point is, eventually you'll show your face in a reflection. Watch out.
The birth of Siri
There might be a Microsoft employee watching this now, wondering if they can sue Siri.
That fucking loss meme
This is the Sync system in Ford cars.
apparently, xiaomi mi pad isn't thr first mipad
C: "Do the Face Reveal."
MiPad: "Enjoy the Copyright strike."
One wonders whether Google took ideas from Microsoft.
2:31 General Kenobi!
Summary: Bonzi Buddy but with speech recognition and for PDAs
0:45 "expand dong" - LOL
1:20 iv have that same PDA
Bowie glitter loop forever!
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was about an iron.
When Microsoft and Xiaomi have a product togehter
i misread the title as "What was the Microsoft MiiPad?"
XD bonzi buddy reference
This was the biggest "fuck you" MS could have given to the MiPad team
Look up Smartisan TNT Station, its basically this in present time
Yay he called it google assistant!
Cortana without spying.
Title needs how ipads starts
But now this is a very common thing to use with todays mobile devices and computers. Also it's being used with the AI assistance like Google home, Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana, and Apples Siri. But the thing about this this that the device had to have a microphone built in or an external one plugged in. Back then incorporating a Mic into computer like devices wasn't a standard thing. Plus Mics were kinda expensive back then even for a good decent one. But then again computer mics are still expensive.
Windows? Servers? Windows 2000? None of those words go great together.
Still better than Siri
ipaq
MiPad
ThinkPad
any others?
is that a device with a home button??!?!
4:50 Buddy, Bonzi with number 1 (800) 420-6969. Nice.
I think the ipaq looks like a PADD from star trek enterprise
Imagine a future where every input is voice recognition, quite noisy!
