me every time I see early 2000s "ugly" computers: I love him
No you don't lol that's just me
the whole 2000s in fact (the whole XP/Vista era including tabletpcs, umpcs, media centers, slideshow, plus the old iMacs with iLife)
The 2000s had some unmatched creativity in PCs, only surface did some unique stuff in the 2010s, I have hopes for the 2020s (book computers are so futuristic I want them to be the next big thing)
Computer old ones look nice not ugly
watching this from a 1280x1024 monitor with a dead pixel line...
at least its 5:4
5:4 is pretty nice
unless youre editing video
1279x1024*
crtnr has come
My laptop has a dead pixel line unfortunatly, but I don't really notice is anymore
So?
It looks like a shopping kiosk.
Hello
Damn you early
Hi Justin! 🍄 I thought you were dead! 🍄
first time i see you
Justin? JUSTIN'S BACK WOOO YES
This isn't that ugly, pretty unique tbh.
At that time, that computer would be actually look cool and unique. Many computer hardware designs on that era are not far off, so it actually fits in. Only if we compare it with modern aesthetics of computer does look weird.
It looks like an iPad + vacuum cleaner .-.
Yeah, honestly new designs are all too bland for my tastes. If we could have something in-between early 2000s and now... (like.... late 200s - early 2010s...).
I can't even really say it's consumers that choose it, if they just get something new shoved on their face, they associate new with good all around, then all others copy around anyone (doesn't matter who starts, they all just follow), no other options and then new trends are born
@@Kalvinjj You can always build a sleeper pc, not to hard to modify a case to be able to handle modern hardware. Worst part in my ecperience is the airflow
I actually quite like the design. Beats all the desktop computer designs I had from 1995-2008.
that looks like an education pc we have in the UK called the RM One, they did an older one which ran XP and a modern one which was 16:9 and ran windows 7
i would say the viglen omnino 3 and also newer omnino 4 looks closer, another business/education marketed all in one
this comment just brought me down a cursed education pc rabbithole and i cannot be happier
Oh god I remember the RM One! I hated them :P My first IT job was in a school, one of my tasks was installing XP on all of the RM Ones. I new the XP product key off by heart by the end of it...
obviously I saw that dead pixel line from 0:00. it's weird if anyone couldn't see that. you really need to contact Gateway to swap you a newer one.
Ikr
its not like you could just do that, the machine is way out of its warranty considered its from 2005. warranties usually last like 1-5 years

I'd more readily accept Windows XP Home Edition
Oh great, now I'll never be able to buy this for anything less than $50. The curse of UA-cam and eBay is a damning one.
Yes, there is nothing there now. I've always kept my old PCs to run older software apps on - Psion is one example, where you need RS232 to connect to a Psion computer.
Jesus is the only way to Heaven according to John 14:6. All have sinned and so all fall short to God's perfect standard, that's why Christ was sent to die in our place! Be grateful and accept Him as your Lord and Savior!

Fn hate that. Tech youtubers hyping up something that should stay at low prices.
I'm impressed you found one where all the capacitors aren't leaking. The gateway profiles were miserable machines.
Wrong Spec. You said it weighed 23.0lbs but your scale clearly shows 0.E2lbs.
just 180° thingy
>you
>joke
@dennis045 Who knows what those weigh anymore? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Still, this IS better than a modern all-in-one by upgradability.
James Rowe see it upside down
As a tip, you could have made an ISO of the XP disc, downloaded and copied the drivers and any necessary updates onto the ISO using nLite, and burned the ISO to a CD.
It saves a lot of heartache and gives you your sweet XP tunes during setup.
The QR code is for Hannah Montana Linux. Very useful.
Why?
@@everythingpony Was just making a joke....
I have a Profile 6 as my... garage computer - the bulkier model in the bottom right of your pic of all the Profile computers. Yes, I have a garage computer. I lucked out and got one with a recent enough revision to be able to accept CORE 2 DUOs, though only up to the 6000 range. I think it has an E6300 right now? Also upgraded to an 8600gt - yes, you can use "full size" graphics cards, as long as they aren't too long, via the PCI-E 90-degree riser card. Anyhow, its purpose is to play music and youtube videos while I work in the garage, and to be there when I get stuck on a project and need to do more research, such as when I did the timing belt on my car for the first time and accidentally got one of the camshafts out of time. Woops!
I've come to appreciate its weirdness, and how oddly upgradeable it is for such a small form factor. I think these are seriously overlooked as XP retro gaming boxes, and are still usable today with a modern OS if you can get a core 2 duo to work.
Or just get a 140$ Lenovo T440s or a Tablet.
But i unterstand the fun you have with this device :)
cloridan Beauchamps yup
I know they no longer serve a PRATICAL purpose anymore, but I REALLY wish the eye candy known as screensavers and music visualizations make a comeback, and SOON!
If OLED displays become a thing in the future, you might actually have a reason to get some screensavers.
I still run the SETI@Home screensaver. It looks cool and actually does something useful.
My Desktop daily driver is an HP Pavilion All in one still rocking Win 8.1.I actually like 8.1, and it syncs perfectly with my Ipad ( Yes, I have a strange dual attraction to HPs, and Apple stuff at the same time., sigh.).... But I`m losing track. I was going to say that I still have the bubbles screensaver, and I like it. OK, I set it to only run a few minutes before it goes to sleep, but it`s sill kind of fun.
electric sheep tho
I don't think it's ugly, but this is just me and my weird taste.
I actually like older PC's better
less ugly than the imac TBH ,imacs look like they were designed by children aimed at children, a simple understated PC is way better than some autistic looking translucent colourful plastic casing
If your box ain't beige it better be interesting and not another plain black case with leds in the window.
@@girlsdrinkfeck I like colorful translucent garish tech lol. But imacs are trash from a objective tech standpoint
Computers that are ugly are like streets or tools that are ugly: you are missing the point if you think a tool is supposed to be beautiful. Like a semi truck, being beautiful is a pretty dumb thing, as in the case of imacs all in one, it gives you subpar performance, as the cooling is inadequate, due to the constrained space. Would anyone claim a bejeweled hammer drives in nails better? ;-)
You might be surprised at how much better it performs if you replace thermal compound. Thermal throttling was an issue with those machines even when they were new.
My first computer was a bunch of wires in a cardboard box
Do you happen to watch Druaga1? :)
You had a box...?!?
Does it play portal
Can I have a picture of it.
Lucky you my first pc was my imagination it ran Crysis at 7282 FPS at 1080p high settings give or take.
2:03 thats actually a standard 6 pin atx plug, usually used internally to power gpus
:-)
I had a small Dell PC that used a power supply like that, it had a 30gb internal Laptop HDD in it.
i thought the same but wasnt sure if the notch profiles on it is the same as a ATX connector ,perhaps he meant not just the port but the power supply
LTT i see what u did there...
Yep Molex 6 pin. It's "A" standard but not "the" standard for power bricks lol!
thats actually pretty cool, though the one dead line gets on my nerves
Same way i feel about it, I would be finding some way to mod this PC with a new panel, as I remember at the time Gateway had been bought out by ACER, and ACER uses a lot of Korean made panels, so I'm sure it's not that hard to source a new one if you have the correct part numbers.
@@CommodoreFan64 IF...
You could always replace the lcd
I remember we had some of these in one of the IT rooms at my secondary school. We thought they were so cool.
I mean is it ugly or are we not appreciating the perfectness of a computer
Edit: Dang that’s a lot of likes
It's like a macintosh, but you don't have to do yoga over your desk to reach the CD drive.
The jack is nack
I think it looks fine, especially compared with the contemporary i-Mac, which looked awful back then, but now looks hyper-duper-mega-gross.

Another nice video! You deserve to be a bigger presence on UA-cam.
As soon as he started talking about the early 2000's, I turned my quality down to 480p
Oh hey, congrats on 100k!
i have 4 of these still kicking around .. the 5.0 and 5.5 both had an upgradeable video card

What is the beige tower you plugged into the vega port? Beautiful machine. This is a very interesting video. Thank you!

i owned a profile 5.5 and used it during highschool as a way to do my schoolwork but also play cs 1.6, surprised with the performance i got with it seeing as it was a old computer. i forgot all about this pc and seeing this vid in suggestion instantly brought back nostalgia! THANK YOU!
From my childhood I remember visiting a family friend who had this model. I was amazed by it at the time, especially as every PC I knew of was a full tower!
IMO it doesn't look bad for the era either.

Wow, this brings back so many memories from middle school. It was amazing at the time!
Oh man this brings back a lot of school memories
You want an ugly Gateway AIO machine? Track down one of the granddaddy's of the Profile series -- the Astro. These are sleek and serviceable in comparison.
Imagine a beige plastic iMac with a crappy Celeron CPU and a CMOS battery that would cause it not to turn on at all.
I've seen one in one of those YT "destruction" videos, and now I know what it's called. Apparently, despite the low specs, Gateway also released a couple of Nickelodeon editions of it.
animeexpressway.com/rugrats/gateway.htm
Never knew they made special editions. Unfortunately I became somewhat of an expert at working on Astros after acquiring a few dozen at a school sale for about $20. This was back when they were still current enough to use so how could I pass that up? $20 for a truckload of computers?
They had their issues but so long as the CRT monitors were good some wound up with Coppermine Pentium III's.
When I hear ugly PC I think of old grade school Apple computers
@@EsotericBibleSecrets What? The classic Apple // wedge design? They not only looked cool but were easily serviced having a top cover attached with velcro.
It's not ugly. It's beautiful in a clunky early-2000s way.
With the majority of XP installs I did back in the day, which were thousands of thousands. Only a few machines(which I did not use the OEM disk that came with any machines) ever actually played the installer music. In fact back then you were comsidered extremely lucky to ever hear that stuff. People and/or kids today like to think that stuff was just there like it is today, when in reality most of the time you were extremely lucky to have sound/Ethernet drivers upon install!
I saw one of these recently in a retable cabin in Colorado. It was set-up for internet explorer only and most websites were blocked. It had a sticky note on it with *EMAIL PORTAL* written on it.
Did you replaced thermal paste?
wont make much difference on a p4 TBH

And the amazing Windows xp set up music
Thank You for making me chuckle with the QR Code Easter egg xD
7:45 - For a moment I thought that little HP tablet was called iRAQ!
Four guys is a fake song from a fake album , created by sampling songs from each of the Beatles' solo carers. It is a special kind of plagiarism, that actually credits the original artist's counterparts, in another dimension.
It's a remix with a backstory written by a moron. Everyday Chemistry ain't half bad though.
There's nothing "fake" or "plagiarised" about it, it's the audio component of someone's weirdass sci-fi art project and it rules
the h264ify plugin really helps a lot with most older computer playing youtube video
That KVM feature is really cool. I've never heard of that before being built in like that

Still waiting for a rebrand! Your channel name is too off-putting and generic and irrelevant for your awesome videos! I know I'm not the only one who thinks this either. I went a long time seeing your videos and not clicking on them because of the "Top Ten Dumb Science Facts" style channel name. Please rebrand to help you get more subs and views like you deserve!
You had my hopes up with that QR code at the end... did not disappoint. Lol
20 years ago I was a Gateway tech and worked on dozens of Profiles. The first were little more than a laptop on a stick with a separate keyboard. I still liked them.
What is that hulking behemoth of a PC you used to demonstrate the kvm capabilities?
You know this video is old when club penguin is one of the games he ran
I have a Profile 6 that we use in our lab/work area(namely for coding and programming our MCU and FPGA logic), pretty neat little machine but I personally can't wait to replace it with a smaller laptop or something that uses less space on our benches.
It is actually pretty neat and nice. Definitely not ugly. BTW, after your video I'm really thinking on buying one just to get the case and fit a modern build inside it. And that floppy / DVD tray arrangement is just lit!
7:06
"you can see that Portal is at really low settings"
*TEXTURE DETAIL HIGH*
*MODEL DETAIL HIGH*
It would still be very laggy because of the portals
One other odd note about the Profile 6 - it has an internal power supply, but not all of the power supply is actually in the enclosure. The unit itself only makes 12v and connects to the motherboard via a proprietary 10-pin connector. Then, there's more voltage conversion to create the 5v and 3.3v rails ON THE MOTHERBOARD, and a connector comes out of the motherboard to provide the molex and SATA connectors. Such a weird setup but it allowed them to have a very compact, enclosed PSU.
That also means that, if you hacked off the connector, you could probably run the Profile 6, and the Profile 5.5 for that matter, off of a car battery.
The concept itself is pretty nicely executed with it´s own cable input panel, speaking of which is this a perfect retro style AIO pc to put modern hardware into?
There was a card slot inside where you can actually add a wifi card instead of using a USB adapter. I drill holes on the silver circles on either side of the case and attached two antennas to it. Those were the days.
I had one of these exact models for years as a guest room spare. I loved it except for two things. Its fans were loud as heck under load and it has a proprietary nvidia nv34 agp 8x. Only one graphics card model that supported the weird board connector was ever released and mine came with it already installed which was what made me finally scrap it when it got to slow .Oh that and the connector on the power brick to the back of the pc melted after a few years and became intermittent.
I love the great content keep it up!
great video, never saw this pc before
@The science elf what is that computer you hooked up to the VGA to show how the input works. And what was it displaying . Wondering I've seen that tower before somewhere and I can't remember where or what it is. Please let me know its killing me know trying to remember.
Ah... I remember this computer. Such memories.
I can't even count the number of times I've installed XP. (Do numbers even go that high?) Never once did it play music during the install, even when its sound driver was properly installed after setup was complete. Did you install as an upgrade? I haven't done an upgrade since it took me two days to work through issues going from 3.1 to 95, but have instead only ever done clean installs. Could this be why?
Honestly that thing looks fine. Certainly slicker than (but not as cool as) the Ipex AllStationX systems that were popular here in Australia in schools and such around the same time that this computer was current. It was a "modular" AIO where you would install your own monitor on the inbuilt VESA mount, it used a standard mATX motherboard, desktop drives and you could even add video cards and such if you were daring. It didn't take up much more space (about an inch and change deeper) than this Profile and was half the starting price including a monitor.
Man, that mousepad... So many memories
i find those sometimes locally, and i use them as Emulation "arcade" machines! custom windows 7 install, and loads directly into a front end.
Thanks for the "Bad Ben" episode of computers.. Don't upgrade it, bury it!!
That's actually a really cool computer. I like it!
I used to have one of those MSI touchscreen thingys (The ones that had laptop components inside) and I remember it struggled to run Windows 7 it's self...
I used to have a profile 6. It was a good computer for back in the day. Personally, I loved the way it looked.
Also, the profile 6 was a much better design than the 5 in my opinion, it used desktop parts instead of laptop parts which made it bigger but much easier to work on and upgrade. You could put it a full sized graphics card if you wanted to as it had a pcie slot with two openings in the back. It was really cool the way they fit it all in there. I loved that thing and I would probably still use it today if I had a way of upgrading the CPU. It used a standard desktop CPU, mine had a core 2 duo in it, but I used a specially designed motherboard.
Sometimes you can massage the bezel around where the dead LCD column is and get it to come back on.
5:55 That is "Band On The Run" by Wings (George Harrison's solo band)
The AIO form factor is somewhat similar to current touchscreen POS system. May I suggest you find a USB multi-touch overlay for the screen for a future project.
I actually upgraded my computer this year too about same amount that u spent in total! But if it were to be Intel Celeron 1.7 Ghz, would u have upgrade the CPU?
Stone did it better in 05 I think. Their machines look like direct copies almost, but the stone ones are more boxy, and more "raw". Inside there is just a atx motherboard, and to connect to the monitor is a VGA cable that comes around all on the inside of the case. It makes it actually possible to upgrade the GPU (with a PCI riser card).
Plus it also has the newer chip set too, so core2 CPUs are supported!
I like how shiny that copper sink is.
Wow, I saw one of these at a thrift shop not long ago. You're right about the weight-surprisingly heavy. The shop wanted an outrageous amount so sadly I had to pass on it.
It makes me think of building a custom case for mounting to the back of my own screen. Use those wall mounts for something, and get the case off the dusty floor!
I have this computer, I haven't gotten to mess with it much though. How were you on club penguin? Was that just a video?
The profiles Power Port just looks like something i would plug a power supply cable into
I love the fact that Gateway considered enough to give you a VGA and Audio Input so that you can use machine as both its own display and use the display and speakers for another machine. I wish all all-in-ones had this feature.
2:03 That is a pretty standard Molex connector also used for GPU power but the pinout is probably different.
I really like the design great
For future if you're trying to run source titles on older hardware, you can force them to run in directx 8 by using -dxlevel 81 as a launch option
I have a Profile 4, but had a Profile 5 in the past. it went the way of the dodo and stopped wanting to POST.
the 4 has no power supply and I can't seem to find the one I had stashed from the 5. must have gotten rid of it somewhere and I have no idea what happened to it.
I love these late nineties, early to mid 2000s computers. My fave PC era. Athlon forever!!!!
I made a Ubuntu media player out of my Gateway profile 5. Using Pulse Effects to enhance the audio as well as VLC KODI to play the media. you should try it
My Cisco 1841 router has a similar power plug, but with 8 pins, and the power supply is also enormous. They must've had a good reason to put the PSU outside, as the router is less than the width of a standard rack, and could easily house it.
The PC I'm currently using can't handle HD videos either, so I didn't notice the dead pixels lol. I did notice them during the BIOS screen, but assumed it was my imagination.
