I like to do a portrait that shows a different element than just the face. I like the painting to appeal to the wider world forever. That might mean they are working in the garden or kitchen or sitting on their tractor. something that not only the family will love.

Ben Lustenhouwer hi Ben, this is such a relatively new interaction, it’s wonderful when I think about it. I love UA-cam because it gives a voice outside of the mainstream media and different opinions. I’ve been isolated in the Swedish forest painting for 35 yrs, mostly making a living doing jobs for interior designers in Stockholm and odd trips to London, but the desire to be the best I can be in portraiture has had to wait till I became of pension age. Always done portraiture, mostly family but also commissions . Now I can eat and paint what I want. Bliss. I will put forward my work to the BP portrait artist of the year and have to the Royal society of portrait artist’s. They will put it on their social media. Fun. It’s so wonderful to see your videos, someone sharing. It’s as if I were talking to you. Suddenly I don’t feel so isolated. It means a lot. Thank you again.

Nice comment on the sitter, especially if it´s a commissioned portrait. It jumped t my mind the series of portraits of Tsar Nikolai II by Ilya Repin: not even a portrait genius like him could do something bright with such a dull expression.Three main portraits failed: no sweet lie can change the nature of some models. Allso, seen your work, I realized how tough or disappointing it can be for you when the client wants to get a Hollywood star result and the painter thinks "OK, you pay, but this is an expensive photo in oil and canvas"

Will keep what you have said in mind when dealing with portraits, and photographies use in establishing values of shading that are present. My experience in all three areas, having been a Professional Model, an advanced film photographer, and painter since childhood has left me working from a very different skill set than many. It's more a handicap when I find myself having to bridge across the gulfs from differing prospectives, and must make allowances for the sitter's character & temperament, along with the paintings' intended mood. Not a strong advocate of digital imagery, or the express use of app's coupled with software filtering, since I am already proficient with real filters, and have Neutral density, skylight, graduated, and color-correction varieties to account for subject. Years of Commercial and Graphic Arts has left me certain of the gross inadequacy of most image manipulation softwares, with some maker's better than other's, still each defy a specific purpose, with no better, no worse, being the final outcome. Not certain why you even suggest a white card for color balancing, since most professional photographer's would use a neutral gray swatch instead, but I guess its close enough. Thank you for your effort and time in this discourse. Best wishes always.
