      P S oh yes, I watch a lot of these and think how easy these professionals with years of training make it look. On and off I’ve been working on the famous painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring” for 3 years, but when I try and use the information like I’ve looked at today, it most certainly will not go the same. I
      will not give up on this though because I’ve already put too much into it! She may not look quite the same at the girl but it will be my version!

    If you want to learn how to paint fine art, go Dutch, you’ll hardly go wrong. Just as great as the Italians with the bonus of explanation in clear plain English.
    We’ve just seen a perfect example here, thank you.
    Thank you also on telling me to toss using black while painting humans. The temptation is huge though, especially when painting dark skin.

    I think it's important to point out that, while this is a good technique for beginner painters, you should understand *WHY* this works and *WHEN* this works. This technique works best when there is a lightsource at 45 degrees above the subject's face - which is the case for many paintings, especially beginners' paintings. Why this works in this context is a matter of colour temperature in respect to a light source. As demonstrated by Vincent Desiderio in many lectures freely available on UA-cam, there must be a shift in temperature throughout the form respective to changes in zones of light, which I believe is what Ben's technique is accomplishing. There must be a difference in colour temperature between the incidence of reflection (highlight), midtones (turning of the light), shadows, and reflected light. This needs to be considered when your light source is not in the conventional direction of 45 degrees above the head.

      Huh?

    • @friedricengravy6646
      @friedricengravy6646 3 роки тому +7

      Barbara Sylvain warm colors protrude & cool colors recede.
      Dont just feather 2 pre-existing colors together to create a mid tone (the color between light & dark) Instead mix them by considering color temperature. Also edges: soft edges create the illusion that something is curving gradually like a hill & sharp edges r steep like a cliff.....Turning the form is a phrase used to describe representing 3 dimensional shapes on a flat surface (canvas, etc) Having the cheek for instance recede back or the nose sloping across the bridge with soft edges between the dark, mid tone, & lights or the jaw line having a sharper edge representing a quicker turn from light (cheek) to dark (under the jaw connecting to the neck).
      I hope this helps....u can find more under ‘color theory’.
      .....and the principals can b used painting any form, not just skin &/or people. Landscapes & still lives too. Happy painting!
      Love Life, Make Art

    Mr. Lustenhouwer, I am so grateful to have had the chance to watch a true Master Instructor! Your technique with oils remind me of what my Grandfather taught us during his lessons that he lovingly shared whenever we had a question. I miss him dearly and you Sir, would be kindred spirits and fast friends who believed in teaching the next generation the gift of “creation” from the spirit.

    This was a great lesson in portrait painting, love the technic of the three planes of color. I especially enjoyed watching you paint and explain while you are painting. Thanks for sharing your expertise. God bless you for your generosity.

    I learned so so so much from this video! You are a wonderful teacher. Many artists have a hard time explaining as so much is just reflex for them. You however, break it down perfectly. I’m sharing these videos with all my artist friends. I painted with you and I’m very happy with my painting. I think I’ll do it another 10x to cement it in my brain.

    Thank you Ben! I had some medical issues and now coming off a creative block. My drawing skills are there but color has been a struggle. With this reminder I can begin to paint again. I started with a tonal painting. You have helped so much! #BenLustenhouwer.

    Wonderful Maestro. When I was a child, I would watch my father and others at work, doing all kinds of tasks. I would always bother them with my inquisitive questioning; what are you doing, how does it work, and on and on. I would always get the same answer, watch and learn. The same is true here, by watching and listening to you I have learned, thank you, Maestro.
