Portrait painting: How to make transitions and soft edges. By Ben Lustenhouwer

  • In this shortened version I show how I paint transitions and soft edges in a portrait. For example, where the hair touches the forehead. The complete video will be launched next week. More than two and a half hours with all the information you want to know.
My model is a good friend. I took the photos a few years ago.
Actually, this portrait is about her eyes. I want to draw the maximum attention there.
What just can't be seen in the video: I make the Mauve color with Ultramarine Blue + Alizarine Crimson. And I added Titanium White.
The rest of my usual palette: Titanium White, Yellow ochre, Cadmium Red Deep, Terra Rosa, Transparent Oxide Red, Alizarine Crimson, Viridian green, Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber and Ivory Black.
I did not use any medium in the beginning. Later I used a self mixed medium: 50% neutral drying medium + 50% stand oil. Only to add some soft brushstrokes.
See also my blog PAINTING PORTRAIT TIPS where you can download the free "100 Portraits" e-Book: www.paintingportraittips.com
    and my Gallery:www.lustenhouwer.com
The lovely music is composed and played exclusively for me by my cousin Will Sophie. Check out his website: willsophiemusic.com

This is such awesome work and I love the way you tell, how you mix those colors, and how you smartly blend those colors, especially the minute detail of you saying 'Hovering the brush on the eye color' no one gives that minute details, Please share those tips and keep sharing your masterpiece.

Hi Ben.... I just wanted to take a minute to extend a huge thanks to you and a hug in these diffucult times. I am not a person who can subcribe to the likes of Patreon and various others that many artists understandably flock to like homing geese,,, so it a huge thank you for sharinng your wonderful knowledge and techniques with us in this manner. I am only sorry that I am "out of the loop" because I would love to donate even a small amount if possible. Be well and stay safe,,, You are one of the best! Portraits are the one are that I find the most intimidating... have never had the confidence to even start one,,, so maybe now is the time,,,, I have painted in oils for years but have just started experimenting too with Acrylics this last week,,, so lots to eep me occupied,,,

It´s a bit annoying for some of the watchers I know, but I really want it to be for free for everybody. Because whatever I would charge, one dollar has not the same value in California as it has in Bangladesh. Stay safe.

    Good morning Ben,
You are an absolute godsend to watch and listen to, during these uncertain times. I absolutely love your painting style and techniques.
I recently purchased your " Little Boy Portrait" download. What an invaluable gem it has proven to be! I have learnt so much from you whist watching this .
I am new to painting , but I have found portraiture is my joy.
Any chance of more videos being released? I know you have a young girl one available, but would like to see more of the older generation ( with particular attention to wrinkles etc)
I understand there is a fine line between showing the age of a person without being too unflattering , whilst also showing their character.
What are you're thoughts on backgrounds? I'm a bit scared of them looking so flat and uninteresting.
With a subject in situ, in front of a window perhaps, how would you achieve the focus on the subject without drawing too much attention to the background?
Ps, your English is great and I understood every word , any chance of you presenting a painting class in England when please God this is all over?
You may never answer any of this , but thank you for your knowledge anyway.

    • @lustenhouwer
      @lustenhouwer  4 роки тому +1

Good morning Julia. I am glad my videos are of help. That is my aim these days of lockdown. I will continue making videos . Also of elder people and with special attention to backgrounds too. I have so much to tell, so patience... I am afraid I will not be teaching in England. The classes planned for Holland next mont are in danger because of the situation. But we keep up the good spirit. Best.
