  • This informative 45-minute video delves into the mind of Kev Brown and DJ Iran (pronounced I Run) as they discuss production, Teddy Riley, Dilla, Common's Electric Circus. Kev also plays a couple of unreleased tracks. Iran plays a couple of unfinished beats from the MPC 2000XL as well as plays some sample heavy records. Enjoy. It's either this or 45 minutes of Worldstar....

love how these guys keep it professional, not shouting at the camera, not creating some fake hype with sound effects on some primetime tv stuff, the style that's becoming prevalent on youtube. just discussing on some audiophile tea sipping tip. edit: when i read the comments below, seems like Im not the only one loving the chilled composure.
so glad I found this again.

Its funny to see DJ Iran in Pete Rock Soul Survivor documentary. And this is one of my favorite videos in youtube. Always watch this if there is a lack of motivation for making beats.

You can tell from the amount of crunchiness and aliasing that he sampled the piano in 'lo fi' mode on the 303 (or possible used the 'lo fi' fx). Also his drums have that classic 'vinyl sim' slap to them.

15:26 "I've always thought about sampling the bass line from Piece of My Love." Low and behold, "Play No Games - Big Sean" samples the bass line and other elements of Piece of My Love.

@ 4:26, these guys start talking about how producers make money, and Kev Brown basically says that producers shouldn't give away beats for free in order to sell one or two. I totally feel his perspective, but inevitably it's going to be much harder for producers to sell their beats.
One of the first problems is the fact that musicians today aren't making nearly as much money as they did 20 years ago by just selling their music. So, musicians are becoming more and more dependent on the money they make from performances because downloading free music is getting easier and easier (people are now putting full albums up on youtube in HD). Another problem is the fact that becoming a producer today does not require nearly the same investment in gear. Computers are getting cheaper and cheaper, and software is getting better and better, so this increase in competition will force producers to give away their beats for free just to establish name recognition.
The irony of all this is the fact that Hip Hop was built, in part, by Dj's that became producers. But many producers today are probably going to have to be Dj's as well, just to earn enough to do this as a profession. You'd get paid by booking gigs and you'd have a platform to build your name recognition by putting your beats within your sets.

I look forward to that part of producers becoming DJ's it will only help the creativity and the DJ is the rockstar now anyway with edm just check niggas like DJ mustard

sounds like vinyl sim and bit reduction...you can tell he definitely used the vinyl sim on the way in too because he makes the "knob twist" gesture with his hand.. There's really only so much you can do with those units and the magic of them is def in the FX

Dj Premier always gets talked about but when they talked about records they studied. That Group Home record. It was unbelievable how simple the song structure was it was so basic but man that was raw.Pauls Boutique came out when everything was James Brown samples and that as well as De La taught me to experiment.
