  • Directly compare two lenses from my collection. And is it really worth it to buy a Leica summicron lens for $2800?
And these two lenses are vintage lenses which were produce in the 80s.

Thank you for the great video.
I used a CLE for years in the 80’s.
I bought a new old stock Rokkor 40 mm second version( for CLE) in Japan.
It is on my SL2S all the time even if I have a summilux 35 FLEIi, and other great a famous Leica glasses.
    It is absolutely stunning.
This is the best lens I ever had.
    Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience, some lenses are really hidden gems without fancy reputations

I went to a shop to do a lens comparison. Did the exact same shot with both lenses on my 26Mp camera. My own lens is the Minolta and the shop's lens was the Leica Cron. Guess what. The Minolta outperformed the 3000 Euro Leica lens. As much as I like to purchase an investment, the fact that the Summicron price is much too bloated for what it delivers, makes me shy away from the summicron. Really happy w. Minolta which other than stated in this video gives me a warmer more red color rather than yellow.

That is great to know, minolta is really a lens and glass geek among its competitors. Sample pictures in this video was taken by Leica M240P, which has a warmer white balance comparing to the other generations, that might lead to the warmer color. Thanks a lot for your comment

Minolta lenses were superb and for a lower price than Leica. I used several Minolta SRT 101 professional for 30 years, before I switched to Leica R 6.2, because I couldn't get new SRT 101. Now I'm on Leica M240. Good review!

Thank you so much for watching. I like the 240 series as well. Minolta was such a genius brand for designing brilliant lens structures. I really like the tiny 28mm lens, and bought a minolta Tc-1, heard rumors that these two lenses are identical other than the aperture

Hallo. Is it the cl or cle 40mm, the first or second version, as they are quite different as well through their coatings? Without looking at which was which lens, when I looked at the Fotos I went for the right ones. Was surprised when I checked it at second viewing that it is the rokkor. After all - technically seen, the original Leica lens may be the better one but this doesn’t make the better photos. There is more to that.

Alan, great comparison but you left out a few things. To add perspective to this comparison your viewers need to know that the Minolta 40mm f2 lens is no longer in production and that it's actually Leica glass developed for the Minolta CLE camera.
That camera, for which I'm an owner, only has frame lines for 28mm, 40mm, and 90mm lenses. The CLE was basically the Leica M7 before that camera came to market and they stopped manufacturing it in 1985.
The lens is worth every dollar spent. It's not a budget lens like the 7Artisans M mount lenses are. It's a true Leica lens built by Minolta for the CLE.

Hello Dadisi, thanks for the comments.
And yes, I should have mentioned that all the lenses and cameras in my videos are all vintage ones. I specifically picked leica 35mm Summicron V4 to compare, because these two lenses are all produced around 80s and 90s. Summicron 35mm V4 was produced from the year of 1980, the production period was overlapped with Minolta 40mm M-rokkor. That’s why I compare these two.
And I read the article of Ken Rockwell, saying this camera as a minolta M7, but the light meter won’t work if you set the camera in M mode, it’s only going to work at A ( aperture priority) , a bit inconvenient.
Thanks a lot for watching, I am so happy to talk about vintage gears with camera lovers!

      Hello Dadisi Olutosin
And it is one of my first videos, sorry to miss some points. I will try to talk about cameras more specifically and in details in the future videos.
      Thanks

"It's a true Leica lens built by Minolta" - That's flat out incorrect !
I service these optics (I'm a working technician) and there are vast differences in the mechanism, design & optics...

These sorts of videos are invaluable. Film's becoming such a big thing nowadays. Leica along with it. A lot of the lens options are beyond expensive. Leica glass, but the Zeiss and CV stuff to some people. I was just speaking to guy who's run through something like 10 different 35mm lens options for the M mount, just trying to find the best ones. It's worth noting that he's kept the 40mm Summicron (same as the 40mm Rokkor) as a carry about lens.

The 40mm examples seem to be substantially washed out. I know that can be corrected to some degree, but I agree with you. If you have the cash, buying the Leica is a no brainer.

It’s just 1/4 stop faster than the Leica.

I own the 40mm Leica version of this lens. Can't beat it for size and weight but the bokeh is not especially pleasing. Nevertheless it does deliver on price performance.
