    Last couple of years i've been struggling with depression. We moved from Poland to Scotland. I had a big network of photographers and models, loads of meetups and loads of opportunities to shoot portraits. Then the shock of hitting a wall. Recently I've started forcing myself into taking walks on my lunch break at work. Had to buy a small compact camera to make it as easy as possible. Decided on a Yashica FX-3 with a Tamron 24/2.5 lens. Camera cost me 50GBP, lens cost me 70GBP and what a gem this combo is. Now I shoot almost every day and the lens is just stunning, it's sharp and contrasty, compact and so easy to focus and use. Made me get out of a rut even though I used to be a portrait photographer so a 24mm is not something I'd normally use. I don't follow many photography youtube channels, but I like your content cause you seem genuine and you're not trying to sell me stuff all the time. Thank you for that. All the best in 2021!

      Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear your news. Yes like your for portraits I tend to shoot longer but for walkabout I love 24/25mm :) Thanks for following too, yes I try to share mostly info that I would like to discover myself I guess.

      KNUR : I understand the rut thing. Sadly I cannot find models to pose for me for portraits as I am Ugly .. I am a troll. Sadly. Nature is kind and I shoot as much of that as I can , or Nautical , or Buildings , and unusual subjects. I wish I had Matt's charm with the girls. Yeah... I am deeply depressed right now too honestly. Tired of just trees and sea and ships // architecture. Just tired !!
      Only a sweet talking cute guy gets the chick's to pose. No Trolls wanted.

    Good video to start the year with... Thanks and I hope your voice recovers...
    The past year I've kept going back to the classic line of Zeiss nikon mount SLR lenses... the 50mm f1.4 planar and the 85mm f1.4 planar... Shot on my Nikon F3 as well as on my Fujifilm X-T1... They're big lenses compared to your list, but I like the look
    For compact lenses I use the Fuji f2 primes, but I can't shoot those on film... I'll probably end up ordering the voigtlander 40mm f1.2 that you reviewed...
    I'm looking forward to your review of the Fujifilm GF670... I enjoy mine and shoot it a lot more than I expected to.

    My favorite walkabout camera-lens combination is easily the Leica iiF and 2/50 Summitar and for the very reasons you have mentioned. The dual character of the lens is very handy on the streets and brings a favorable artsy look right out of the gate. A 3.5/35 Elmar gets tossed into the bag also for its character.
    A LTM lens you might like to check out is the Nikkor H.C. 50mm F2 by Nippon Kogaku frequently found on Nicca clonesof Leica Barnacks.

    Hi. I came to your channel because I was looking for info re the Leica M8. I'd love to buy a Leica M9 Monochrome but even though I could just about afford to I can't bring myself to do it. So as they say the M8 is the poor man's Monochrome I've been scouring YT for videos to convince me that this is true. Which is what led me to you. So in todays video you featured a lens which I have, the Minolta 40mm. I also have the Minolta 28mm & the Minolta 90mm along with my Minolta CLE which have sat in my cupboard for many years unused. I'm still not yet convinced as to whether I should splash out on the M8, it is an ancient camera after all with very limited functionality at quite a high price. + I'm also a dedicated Fujifilm Fanboy with lots of their X mount kit & there's a very distinct rumour that they will be bringing out a Monochrome body sometime during this new year. If this is the case & if it's a crop X mount body as opposed to a medium format body I will be buying one. Which brings me all the way back as to why I sought out your channel in the first place. The M8. Oh what to do? Hold out for the Fuji or take the plunge? if I do are the lenses I own up to it? Oh Decisions Decisions it's so scary! Anyway thanks for your channel I really enjoy it & all the best for 2021. 👍

      The Leica M cameras have the advantage that you don't have to dive into menus as you do with the Fuji. They are almost as easy to use as a film camera and tend to hold their value well.

      As already said Leica hold their value and it gives a filmic high contrast B&W look. I’d imagine the Fuji will give 50 shades of grey! Depends what you like. And yes good lenses as I hear.

    Awesome! I also prefer old leica glass for sure, and Canon / Nikon have some great lens for LTM too. Although at the end of the day my favorite 50mm is still the Rigid Summicron. You’re lucky that you’ve only shoot 50mm ahah 35mm also has some really great lens if you start digging. My favorites:
    - Summicron 35mm 8 elements
    - Nikkor 35mm f1.8 ltm
    - UC Hexanon 35mm f2
    - Rollei 40mm f2.8 Sonnar (a 40mm but beautiful sonnar rendering and tiny in size)

    This is a very good summary of what happens to me every time I dig into the net and look for lenses. You start knowing too much and want to check it all in real life which is fun but costly and time-consuming. In the end I think you need a planar-design for general shooting (including the 50mm summicrons which are close picture-wise), a sonnar-design for the special bokeh in the normal range, vintage for less, modern for more contrast and that's it! But how can you ever be sure what I'm writing is true if you never went down that foxhole yourself?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Рік тому +1

      Ha yes well said! You forgot to add, size or build also starts to matter. I value smaller lenses more but use big lenses if they offer something special too. (So s small set, big set, modern, vintage, ultra fast..)

    Thanks Matt, interesting and enjoyable video. My favourite lenses at the mo are the voigtlander 40mm f2 and zeiss planar 85mm 1.4 which I use on my fuji gfx. I also recently bought a beautiful 1950s zeiss biotar 58mm f2 which I'm hoping to explore (covers the gfx sensor very well). I have the rokkor 45mm f2 and I agree it's a great little lens and really like the slightly busy bokeh it produces. Wishing you a great 2021. I'm hoping to start photographing girls this year (I'm primarily a street photographer), but your images have inspired me a lot, thanks 🤙

    Matt: I purchased the 50mm 1.4 two years ago , the 50mm 1.2 two weeks ago ( heading to KANTO CAMERA for a new rear inner element .. haze ) , and just acquired on a lark the Steinheil Munchen Oscillo Quinon 75mm 1.9
    Have the APO / SUMMICON / ASPH 90mm F2 as loved it's abilities. I try to stick with M42 , LTM L39 , M mount , and maybe a rare Exacta mount , in a real unusual lens.

    Hi again, Matt. I have been leafing through a stack of enlargements today and I came across a pic, perhaps 6 by 8 inches, that shows a mosque here in my home town. It is framed by the branches of several trees that carry new spring leaves. Their tiny outlines stand out in sharp detail. This is not a great shot, but it is remarkable for one reason. The lens I used was a three element Cooke triplet, created at the end of the 19th century.
    Question: If I were to lay down $12,000 for a lens of the year, perhaps an f.075 by Seven Wizards, would it give me a better negative than my humble $200 Novar? Possibly, but the small margin would not justify the price difference. Behind the proliferation of must-have new lenses, I smell...marketing.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 роки тому +1

      yes agreed, the longer I take photos the more I realise I can use most lenses to get my shots.. but I enjoy the testing process so I still collect them.. I have gone from buying the best M lenses to cheap Soviet ones and I still get great photos.. slightly different but just as enjoyable :) ..this is also why I try not to buy digital cameras too often. I'm happy with one that works.

    I must have missed it but I am sure that you know about the 6-bit coding LTM > M mount adapters which eliminate the need to manually tell the camera what lens you are putting onto it. The glitch I found is that the white and black paint pens must have matte paints not glossy. The encoding charts are available from the internet for download and Bob's your uncle.

    Hi Matt, I see you have included the excellent Minolta 40mm, but have you ever considered the Minolta 38mm f 2.8? Or even the Minolta 90mm? These 3 lenses were made for the Minolta version of the Leica CL, the 28mm was made for the Minolta CLE, the camera that Leica should have put out after the CL, but they were scared that it would further take sales away from the M5……. All 3 lenses work perfectly well on my M4 and my M9 and are very compact. Might be a good topic for a video? Merry Christmas Matt!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

      Hi Stefano, yes purely size. I shot more overseas than the UK so size is key. I have nice bigger lenses and they don't see much use. That said the 1.4 is on ly slightly bigger and also excellent.. more of a 2 lens in 1 so perhaps it should have been top 5.

    Happy New year!!! Im here again to ask something and I hope youve got time to respond :) I habe the exact combination, Leica M8 with voigtlander 40mm 1.4 and as I saw your photos sample on flicker they are amazingly sharp but seems that I dint get the exact result with mine eventhoug I carefully check that the ocus patch is alligned perfectly in my viewfinder. Do I have to adjust the horizontal alignment on the reangefinder? Thabks mate as always!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 роки тому

      Hi HNY! My advise from using RF cameras is if say the vertical is out use the horizontal and the same in reverse if the horizontal is out of alignment. As long as 1 is OK it's possible to make sharp photos. Check your images.. if no sharpness anywhere then it is the lenses not the camera. If the sharpness is in front/ behind your subject it is the camera.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I know a host of people who bought things from ebay and could not use. You may be able to repair a lense, but what if you could not? I certainly can't. Unless ebay can guarantee what people buy, I think it is a great LOSS to buy photograpgic equipment at face value.
      Moreover, If you pay huge sums for a lense it had better be good, and I think Leica lenses are HUGELY OVERPRICED. I personally prefer olympus lenses Pentax lenses, certainly NOT Nikon or Canon lenses.

He could decorate award winning wedding cakes with one eye and shot with his Yashica. I’m no oil painting so ugly guys can get models ha..well to photo anyway haha. Thanks about Canons. Waiting for f2 to arrive still.
