  • Have you ever wondered how to clean a chandelier, or how we reach cobwebs in our towering ceilings? How about managing antique linens for 12 bedrooms or reviving the brilliance of 19th century floor tiles? After the popularity of last year's 'How to do Laundry in a Medieval Chateau', here's a video answering a few more of your questions and showing you some of the nifty little ways we manage daily life and chores in this immense, historic building.
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.

Have to say, sometimes I dream about how wonderful it would be to live in a chateau, then I watch all these videos and other diy, look around at my 75sqm apartment with my robot vacuum and our building janitor, and thinks “it’s fun to watch and visit a chateau, but they used to have 25 servants to manage the whole thing, I’m really impressed someone takes it on, and very glad they take care of those beautiful buildings”

I have no doubt at all that living in a huge old building like your chateau or coach house means learning to accept a certain level of dust and webs. There are obviously a myriad of surfaces that all have unique cleaning requirements, so no more ‘one cleaner does it all’! After becoming familiar with those special needs to protect while cleaning, the question of time /efficiency is also critical. Toss in 2 kiddos, some animals, renovation projects, and earning a living…and there simply is no time to fret about a bit of dust. Your tenacity amazes us!

Thank you so much for taking the time to scrub, clean the chandelier, feed the critters, gather the wood and tell us about the laundry. When I was a teenager, I cleaned rooms for an old Hotel in Southern Colorado, we had 'sheeting' rules as well, folding the sheet the way you showed us was also a time saver in making the bed. We also used an odd duster for cleaning the underneath the stairs and the stair well as spider eggs seemed to even be worse than the webs. It boggles my mind how you and Marc do most of the upkeep at this place when there was a time a housekeeping crew of 10 to 12 people worked at it daily. Much appreciated!!!

Really, there isn't anything more luxurious than linen sheets! I prowl the vintage stores here looking for them -- the hand embroidered ones are dreamy. I'll buy them with someone else's monogram, I just don't care. Yes, ironing them is a pain. But starched linen sheets and pillowcases are such a delight to sleep on. I just watch some chateau videos on the UA-cam while I iron my bed linens, lol. In the winter I use two on top -- to encase my woolen blanket like a sandwich so it won't be so scratchy. When it's time to change the bed, I use the very top sheet for the mattress -- saves on laundry.
The kids are growing so fast and are getting more precious every time I see them! Love your channel!
    Cheers from North Carolina USA

We have a log burner still in use and state of art elec rads which are pointless in the barn we live in. No double glazing, a few drafts under the doors.
While in UK rescently we purchased a new back boiler log burner from S Ireland, its been delivered but we need 5 rads which we will pick up on our next visit, that will be a game changer as its free heat in half the property which is normally cold. We purchased with no heating, with 1 electric light upstaires, and that was wired wrong. The kitchen i cant wait to just burn, and the bathrooms are now new. As is the insulation in the roof from the inside.
We reckon 5 years to finish all. I applaud you for the challenges you both have and have had delt with so far.

It was a running joke between us because I hate dusting! 😫 What a great little helper Clement is!!! Definitely start the kids early in helping cleaning…it’s life skills. Amy, watching you clean the floor made MY back hurt! You might want to consider investing in a steam cleaner - they work well for tile and porcelain floors, including cleaning the grout. It will save your health in the long run, and save you hours of time each time! Also, perhaps a tip for your linen cupboard: You could attach a measuring tape along the front of one of the shelves (or draw it on, if the shelves are not that old), to help in measuring as you put things in their various size-stacks. I have a measuring tape along my craft table for that reason...
