The Biggest Problem Facing Our Chateau Restoration

- The biggest obstacle to moving foward is finishing the eco sewage ponds (reed beds). This ongoing project has been a huge headache, and we're trying to find a way forward. Plus we find a lovely solution to our banging windows in the Coach House.
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.

This is truly a labour of love , the chateau and everything around it!
That with young children isn’t a easy task.
Really admire the two of you! Working so hard. 👏🏼👏🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Ah thanks. Sometimes it feels like too much but we keep on going!
Problem solving is a gift you both have! Oh, and the new hardware is really lovely. Admiration is all I have for you two.
being "far from the maddening crowd" has its negatives......but being "far from the maddening crowd" leaves you with the privacy and scenery that one can only dream of......take the bitter with the better and pace it all.....bravo to you for you ingenuity....👩👩👧👦
You are doing such a great job, especially with two young children and sleepless nights. Take care of yourselves. ❤
Thank you. That means a lot!
💕
Yes please take care of yourselves. Two very young children and the scale of your project is an overwhelming obstacle-particularly while doing this on your own. Are there any universities nearby where students could be persuaded to be a part of your project eventually?
Yes get some volunteers a friend gets them to help with day to day for for a couple weeks at. Time
It’s such a great idea to have volunteers in some situations but with two very young kids and no independent living areas we have to be very careful. The volunteer websites do no vetting at all and we ended up in a dangerous situation once. It would be irresponsible to leave our kids open to harm by having total strangers living in their space. Once we have moved to the coach house it will be easier to welcome people.
Every step gets you closer to being able to move into the coach house. Really like the window catches. 😊
Amy & Marc love how you two giggles and agree.
Especially Marc has got his facial expression
Hi from Australia. The chicken's following Mark around on the digger always makes my laugh. Nice vlog 😀
Wow , that’s weird. I came back to see if my like was up., and that disappeared ! So I thumbs up again. I’ll come back later.
It's always such a pleasure to see the beautiful land on which your chateau resides. Being perched so high on the ridge no doubt causes some challenges but the tradeoff is those amazing views.
Thank you! The wonderful thing is that we’re on an outcrop rather than a ridge so we actually have a decent amount of protection around the back and it’s not as exposed as it looks. The views never stop being breathtaking!
I remember you guys starting the sewage ponds on ETTC DIY. Lovely to see some progress, I’m sure you guys are delighted too. Loving the latches.
Who knew that dealing with sewage could be so interesting 😳😆. Thanks so much Amy and Marc. You restoration project is so unique. I enjoy watching everything you do. Happy spring and almost summer!
That’s lovely Judy. Thank you!
Happy to see you two happily working, my favorite couple.
the grounds itself is hard work let alone renovations and 2 small children needing your attention ,i know i couldn't do all what you both do so hats of to you both one day you will look back and think wow we did that
Thank you! It does feel like a lot at times!
It doesn't only feel like a lot. It IS a lot! Bravo for all you do. You're amazing - and lovely people to boot!
You guys have a lot of obstacles but are making good progress. Sewer, weather, finding parts, and more always makes for a challenge. ❤
BEST WISHES TO YOU
Thank you!
Those latches add such class to the windows! I always look forward to your vlogs. Keep them coming!
Really love the coach house, the windows and their new locks. Your views are stunning and you guys work so hard, can’t wait to see what’s next x
I love your chateau/fortress/ castle. It's amazing
Very lovely window latches. Huge undertaking, this sewage project. You are both very courageous and determined, and you will get it done!
Thank you! I do hope so!
This was so interesting . By the , I love the hardware you chose for the windows.
We lost our American chestnuts to blight! There is a lone Asian chestnut in my neighbor's woods. Last fall he gave us permission to harvest chestnuts to plant in our woods. Our deer love them! My great nephew of 7 loves to plant trees and garden! We will be planting the chestnuts after prep in the next weeks! He will be able to maybe harvest from our endeavour one day! So love your videos!
Wonderful story. How sad about the blight. There is a problem with a disease on the chestnuts here but it doesn’t seem to be affecting all of them.
Your eco friendly approach is so nice to see, love the sewer system (never thought I would say that I love a sewer system 😄).
Oh I do like the window catches! Hand forged window and door fittings are really very classy, and suit the whole ambience of the chateau and the coach house don't they? Hand forged nails are so cool, my house is built with them, and I've found a source of them to use when I need to do and visible repairs here!! I'm pleased you're solving the sewerage problems Marc, that's one thing you can't get wrong! Great video xxx
It just takes time, little by little you will get it done! Love your videos❤
I think Marc would chop onions with his digger if he thought he could get away with it.
I think you might be right!
You’re both so lovely……the window latches look just the ticket. Marc has such a mischievous smile and it’s so good that you can both laugh with each other. God bless all xx
The laches are really beautiful. Well done you!
I really enjoy your content plus the little banter between both of you! Wishing you the very best and continuing good luck with your progress!
Thank you very much!
Love the window latches!!! 😁
Truly love watching you guys. You always bring a smile to my face and some laughter too.
Your all doing a wonderful job and these chateau's are so beautiful and historic, so bringing them back to life is fantastic!..❤
Thank you so much for explaining the problems and progress on the sewage system. It may not be glamorous, but it sure is essential! So glad Marc found someone with the right equipment and could get back on his digger to clear the way. Lovely wi down latches.
Your windows look lovely! Patience and good planning. You both seem to excel at both. Nice job.
Of course we will keep following, Amy! love, love, love the hardware!!!❤️
Love the latches! Good luck with the sewage projrct, you both are wonderful people all around!
The window latches are so beautiful and yea....you are airtight!! Well done you two!! You are such problem solvers and really enjoy watching you. 💗
Another instance of a chicken following Marc in the digger! Hilarious!
Yes, toilets that flush are VERY important! Thanks for the update.
Keep doing what you are doing, enjoy watching all your adventures xx
Bonsoir de Paris. Chaque vidéo est meilleur que la dernière. J’ai hâte de vous voir bientôt. Jerry
Woohoo ! Not long now!
The window latches are lovely ❤
To make the closing more tight, you could put a little piece of wood between the metal plate of the handle and the window frame, before srewing it onto the window frame. Thereby, the pressure of the little metal hook increases :)
Maybe put weather stripping on to pad & tighten the window seal? The different metals wouldn't bother me. What Really bothers me is when people paint them!!! It's really coming together & looking great!
Perhaps an add in the local newspaper or on line to find a private person having an in home daycare? When my kids were little neighbors would trade days minding each others kids so that things could get done. Just a thought.
Cute window latches! ❤️😊
We got our window latches from that company !!
Lovely latches - always such a pleasure to watch you at work. And I never get tired of your lovely intro!
Thank you both for sharng your progress, so much to do but your getting there. I thought at first the latches were being put on the wrong way up, then thinking about it the way you have them is safer as little fingers need to push the handles up rather than flick them down to open them. You are both looking very well, keep up the good work. 💕🇦🇺
I think the latches look lovely on the windows, and a beautiful view of the Alps. The coach is going to look so beautiful. Take care of yourself. I’m looking forward to your next video. Thank you so much for your hard work.
I lived in Colorado for 20 years and had broken and chipped windshields yearly or more! Yours is minor enough they can use the “glass gel” to repair it, even though it’s in your line of site. You shouldn’t even see it. It may not cost more than $100 - a fraction of the cost to replace. THE KEY IS TO DO IT ASAP BEFORE IT CRACKS FURTHER.
I’m afraid I don’t know which cracks you’re referring to?
Hi Melody, I think you are commenting on Ryan's vlog from Life of Ryan, I just watched it before this one. Just thought I would let you know in case you want to post your advice there, Cheers from Canada.
Glad to see Marc back on his digger. I think it renewed his spirit. 😉😁 music was great on this video btw. Keep up the good work, we really enjoy your channel.
Never a week goes by without him finding some excuse to use it!
Yes, haha "why don't you just" ... living in an urban setting it's easy to misunderstand that your property is not set up with the same sort of infrastructure such as sewage. Of course I'll be watching, you're such a lovely family!
Hello from beautiful Cape Cod😘
Hello!
I’m so excited to see you getting closer to “getting your progress unblocked” 🤦♀️😂 and opening up the possibilities for moving forward!!!🎉
what a great & ecological project❣️
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Oh, the fascination of sewage management! Honestly, I think it's very interesting. Here's a question: how on earth did the estate manage those slopes 300 years ago? Goats? That's the only thing I can think of.
Animals were the answer to all land management pre-mechanisation and I think that sheep would have been the answer to keeping grass under control. But remember there was less of an obsession with short grass lawns everywhere before. It could just have been left as meadow. Humans with scythes were also used for cutting grass for hay.
Very happy to follow your progress as usual. Thank you.
Thank you!
I had to go back and watch again because I completely missed the chickens following Marc in the digger 😂😂😂
I really love those window handles. They look appropriate for the coach house. I hope all goes well sorting out the sewer finishing.
we have had a lot of latches and fittings from the suffolk latch co. They are really good
there is a felt or rubber linning that goes around window and doors , that is for keeping air tight and makes them air tight
I do love his accent!!
Me too 😉
Latches look perfect❤️🙏
The new hardware is beautiful!
yourn opening is so good.
Thank you!
lovely latches guys , and the drainage is a massive project , bon courage ;) x Yves
Those window latches are just perfect! I hope your septic situation is finished soon :)
Love you guys! And love following your journey from here in New Zealand 😀xo
Fantastic video, thank you for the details about the drainage and how everything else hinges on it. Will watch updates with great interest…
Thank you! And good luck with the chicken pox!
i know you see it every day but I'm surprised you get so much done with such beautiful scenery (and chickens) to distract you :). The window hardware is stunning. I was actually considering some but my 1970s Aussie house is probs not suited, hehehe
Love the new latches on the windows, great choice x
Your views are stunning!!!! I love the latches and the chestnut windows are so perfect. The coach house is a beautiful building and the renovation is gorgeous. Your property is like a small village and in the end you will have multiple bathrooms/bedrooms so your sewage system has to accommodate all of the buildings. I am so impressed by the sewage system you have installed. What a huge feat, and I’m sure you spent quite a fortune. You two are adorable and I wish you many blessings. xx
Regarding the windows, would inserting rubber or foam sealant tape to tighten the space and would keep the air from entering? I love the way the latches look and they will enhance the appearance tremendously.
That’s what we’re thinking
Another really interesting and enjoyable video- thank you xx
Love the new latches love the videos
Mark, if you look at Amy’s elbow while “high-fiving”, you will always achieve the perfect high-five.
😂😂😂
Love the handles Mark! The windows look great.
Music great today❤We love you and wait for more.
The window furniture looks great 👍🤗 hope all goes well with the sewage system love the way you both keep smiling 😃😃
I just love watching you & your Family well done 🤗👍💐🍷🍾🍷
Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Thanks Sue!
This is footage that was shot in winter? So you shot content for us, but took a vacation from all that editing and posting time ? Thanks! Win Win. We get the all the goings on, and you got some much needed time with family.
Actually Adonis shot and edited most of it. But he and I collaborate on the editing and I was away for a few weeks and then he was!!! But I’m glad it doesn’t bother you!
Beautiful work!
I am addicted !!! Beauty journey and accomplishments.
Truly love watching your videos. Your coach house is really coming along. It will look fabulous!!!
I really like the window latches, they look really nice being in a historical Chateau like yours. I can't wait to follow your journey renovating your beautiful Chateau. God Bless, Kathy USA 🇺🇸
This was SO interesting. I'm one of those who have been wondering for a long time how your sewage project was getting on, especially as I can't really imagine how it works. Thanks for the very informative video. The latches are lovely, go beautifully with the windows and the coach house. I hope you have no more hitches with the sewage, so you can move forward quicker with the buildings. xxx
Love the music in this video 🇦🇺💙💗💙💕Best Wishes from Australia
Are you still thinking of doing yoga retreats? I remember ages ago you did a vlog about it .
It was on the tv show we talked about it. Absolutely! But the kids put the timeline back a bit!
Greetings from Canadian Rockies. Love the monkey tail latches!
Hi there!
a stand of young thorny trees is unbelievably frustrating. there is no way to not be shredded no matter what clothing one wears. and there are always more.roots
sometimes i play at 1.25% speed. thanks for sharing with us.
Love the handles they go just perfect. Nice choice Amy. A lot of work ahead for you Marc with the drains to the pond. Loved watching your progress. Merci Beaucoup. A Bientot😘😘
lovely to see you 😘
Love you guys X
I love the window latches ❤🎉
Really like the country western steel guitar music as Marc is grading a French chateau hillside with the Swiss Alps in the far background!!
I will be following for sure!! ❤
Great music. Little worried tractor tipping
Good job
great work; we can't clear our land at the moment as we have Nightingale here which nest in the undergrowth... and their habitat is protected from 1st April for the season
We have woods full of nightingales, which is so wonderful. But this was all filmed in February so way before that becomes a problem!
I'm envious. Have never seen or heard a nightingale but just love the name
That’s quite the project regarding the sewer system. Looking forward to seeing more of what you are doing. Love the window hardware. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Great you can finish some jobs. I do remember the digging of sewage ponds, is it really 4 years ago? Also I remember Amy,!! Changing the digger machine track?? not sure if thats the correct word!! Those were the days before the need of child minders, but hey, progress is on the horizon. The latches look great, not so the spider webs, bbrrr😮 WCL
