David has been a HUGE inspiration for me! I can't even put it into words properly. I fell in love the moment I bought the Live at Liberty Lunch cassette ...yes cassette....back in 1989 or 1990 in upstate NY. His playing and tone just floored me. Combining country, blues and rock...oh man...... by 1993 I was living and playing in Austin on 6th street in Joe's Generic Bar where we all started out to meet other players. I lived on Guadalupe a few minutes walk from Antones, and used to hear David play regularly with Bill Carter and the Blame and later Storyville. It was a spiritual experience for me every time!!! Great interview Josh! Thank you.
Oh man, Joe's Generic Bar!! I'm a player myself from the Dallas area, but I had a bunch of musician friends who lived in Austin, and I played on 6th Street and had many good times in Joe's Generic Bar. It was a true hole in the wall joint, but it had a great vibe!!
This series of interviews is a gold mine. I can't believe it doesn't have more views. I have a hunch people will come around to discover these. I've rewatched a few already.
A buddy and I had the privilege of seeing you two perform at the Saxon. Every once in a while I pull up the bad video clips on my phone and I'm massively thankful. Thank you for this, I could listen to y'all talk another 2 hours.
An awesome interview and two great players. David is a die-hard tone chaser and has a colossal sound. He plays loud but is so musical. His style and sound is very distinctive and his tone is truly as big as Texas. He is very open in interviews and shares some great insights about playing and recording. I always learn something. Thanks Josh, this is fantastic!
Hehe, I have been to the Grissom, Dr. Grissom's house and dated Amy, whom was Dave's cousin. When we all heard he recorded with Mellencamp, we freaked out!!! Such a great Plexi sound..
That was a great interview. I was hoping at some point they would get around to playing those guitars on their laps. Two of my favorite players talking shop....cool.
I'll be honest, I have read about and saw his signature guitar (I'm a non-owner PRS lover), heard some music by him but this interview makes me want to know everything and hear everything. Thank you!
Awesome interview! I really love it, specially when he spoke about the commitment, passion & conviction to play music, “Do not open up your case, if you’re not ready to bring it”. Thank you so much! David & Josh.
A key common thread I'm seeing to these successful musicians is the parental encouragement from a young age. This is also proof that you don't have to have it in your family to be successful at something, just a cool parent that encourages you and makes these things available for you to succeed. That's a key starting point.
Great interview!, so true about standing up, I had been playing 4-5 nights a week before covid, I put a strap on and stood up the other day to play and felt all this nervous excitement like it was a gig, boy I miss that.
Josh this is amazing. I discovered David through the legendary Bob Harris - British DJ and former host of The Old Grey Whistle Test - an iconic British music TV show. Bob played Storyville and raved about David and I agree with Bob. Sadly my sense is that he is not as well known in the U.K. as he should be. The union of him on guitar and Malford on vocals was a thing of beauty.
awesome. grissom’s amazing. so grateful i got to see my old friend and sick-as guitar player, carter arrington tear up the saxon pub with DG a couple of times. also, saw got to see josh on one of those nights when carter wasnt there!! now, about the janky connection to DG’s video/audio feed??🤷♂️
Excellent job! 👍 What is a bit uncomfortable, and I see this with a lot of these web video interviews. It appears that interviewers forget they are being watched too and a lot of the time they are looking away from their guest and it looks a bit like they aren’t really paying attention. I bet the guest gets that vibe sometimes too. YMMV
Are you releasing these interviews as podcasts? Apologies if you already are. But if not why not? I left this playing on a Bluetooth speaker while I was cleaning the kitchen this morning 😉
Yes! It totally works as a podcast! But I think as a podcast Josh may feel the pressure to put them up on a schedule...I love how organic they are, like he is geeking out with a friend. Maybe he runs out of friends if he has to do one every week!
@@stekks You're right, podcasts don't need to be on a schedule. I assumed that...because all the comedy podcasts I listen to are. And I also heard podcasters say that its important to do that to grow and hold on to an audience...but you are right. This is different. It can be like Dan Carlin's hardcore history. The episodes come when they come and people still listen to it.
I think David’s music is way better than most of the jazz players that I’ve heard.. “most “… I can relate to his music better,anyway.. -and I sure hope he’s kidding when he says he’s not making $200 a night.. c’mon..right..?! ? -But it’s really heartwarming to hear these guys reminisce about their real early days..!
Soundmen should not be telling an artist (especially of the caliber of David Grissom) how to play...unless they want us coming out front telling them how to run sound. Waaaaay over the line.

That was incredibly long and one of the best David Grissom interviews I’ve ever seen. Time well spent. Thanks Josh!

Josh, you are killing it with the fantastic guests on your channel! Thanks!
Please bump the audio up for these future 1on 1's, I find my self cranking mine for these interviews. Appreciate for the uploads!
Joni Mitchell's " Shadows and Light " Metheny. Jaco, Michael Brecker and Lyle Mays....and Joni. Sheer brilliance. Great interview

That was great inside baseball. Good job Josh, awesome questions and thank you Dave as well. True Talent!!!
The intro to don't make me cry is still f*cking magic!
That was a great interview. I was hoping at some point they would get around to playing those guitars on their laps. Two of my favorite players talking shop....cool.
What a pair! Tremendously musicality right there!
Very cool interview. David has such an instantly recognizable touch and is such a down to earth guy.
great stuff, thanks for sharing this Josh.

Great interview @joshsmith! Antone's is on my bucket list to visit.
Two great musicians, and a really down-to-earth interview. Well worth the time.
Two great guys! Thanks for this!
Love both you guys, total inspiration
Awesome conservation with two amazing players. Great stuff, Josh!!
Nice one Josh. Lots of insight outside of technique here. David's a very nice dude. I've met him at several PRS events and he's just the coolest dude.
Best interview you've done so far in my opinion. Really enjoyed that! Thank you.

So great Josh and David! You are two of my all time favourite players. This was so inspiring to watch! Thank you both of you!

This needed to happen. Nice!
This was really good. 👍🏼
I hope I don’t anger anyone.. but David’s tone..by itself.. doesn’t sound pleasing to me.. but in the band mix..?? PERFECT..!! That takes guts,man..!
Josh, you gotta do a video on Roy Buchanan and teach us what you picked up.
an inspiring player indeed
love to hear about davids relationship with joe ely
still have his hotlicks vhs tape!
Yeah COLD CHISEL!!! I was wondering if you guys had heard of them!
Great interview Josh! But please render them a bit louder in the future.

Gotta figure out how to do that.
Hi josh.. an interview with Denny freeman from Austin Tx would be cool.. a guitarist who needs more exposure imo.. keep up the great work
