Y'all, don't be afraid to get those relaxed cut off! I was holding on to those relaxed ends like a bad relationship. I had my hair cut down to an inch! That was in Feb. 2019. I now have hair down my back! With proper treatment and care, you'll be surprised how fast your hair grows! Let it go, ladies. Let it go!
I cut mine down to an inch back in ‘98 to be natural! People thought I had lost my mind! I’ve grown it out mid back several times even going back to relaxed. I was almost waist length but a few weeks ago cut off 2 inches because I’m transitioning which is something I’ve never done cause I’ve always chopped. Im doing twist outs and it blends the two textures really well. Her hair looks so lovely and healthy in the video!! Love it!!😍
I could never transition I was too impatient. I cut mine off at the scalp! Started completely over and best decision I’ve ever made! I love my natural hair, although I silk press it I still love the fact That my hair is chemical free and healthy
I’ve never big chopped. I had shoulder length hair that I simply trimmed once a month. I think if you trim More often while transitioning you won’t need to big chop. I was taking off like 1/2 inch every 4 weeks. I did twist outs and would roll the ends with rods. No direct heat and bi-monthly deep conditioning. You just have to have patience and put in the effort. I’m natural for 5 years and I don’t know exactly at what point I was completely natural but my hair is longer than it’s ever been.
I agree 👍...no big chop is needed...don't be soooooooo scissor happy like this stylist..notice her hair...she is petmed..she's stated she would never go natural...I will always go permed..natural, too time consuming...natural don't make me feel well groomed..old saying...different strokes for different folks...
8:38 Stop right there! Her fro looks cute! Like it's already in a style. All she needed was some edge control & a big yellow flower on the side near her ear😊She's lucky, she looks really good right away. Most of us (like me) had to grow into our natural hair, and get used to seeing ourselves with shorter hair. Mine is almost belly button length now tho🤗
I held onto my relaxed ends for 7 months. I transitioned using braids and cut off bits in between braid styles. I was so excited to see my natural hair after over 35 years of relaxing. 2 years natural and I have not regretted it 😊
No! I went relaxer free Oct 2020. I did not cut anything. I was focused on getting my scalp healthy. I got some advice from a professional of 40 years & my hair grew so fast. At 8 months I did a big chop. I cut off 4 inches of dead hair. My hair is full, healthy & amazing! I finally figured out how to style my new hair texture! I went from my hair falling out in gobbs to none at all! I have no shedding! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Never big chopped. Just trimmed every 6 -8 weeks. This lasted around 18 months. That was 13 years ago and never looked back. Why did I go natural? Well I was tired of dry, brittle hair that did not thrive. Now I have hair down the middle of my back. I love the curls and vibrancy of natural hair. Its flexible, malleable and perfect 🥰💞
During lthe covid lockdown in the UK I decided to go natural as my relaxed hair had started to grow out & no hairdressers were open. So when I finally got to go to a haircarer it had been 4 months since I last relaxed my hair. I had several deep treatments (5) & trims over a 3 month period & my hair had grown so much and was so healthy that I cut the ends off & went fully natural. 3 months later and still loving it.
I did my chop because of the relaxers thinning me out more. I know medicine helped thin me as well. Thank you for always educating and not just throwing stuff out there.
After 45+ years relaxed (my hair LOVED it!), my stylist and I decided to transition in Nov 2019. I was going regularly until we all went into lockdown😫 I had no idea what to do! UA-cam was my initiation into the "natural" world (I have learned SO much since then!) When things opened back up and it was safe, I went in June 2020 for the big chop. For the first time, since I was 1972, I saw my natural hair😍. My hair is versatile, thick, and announced herself everywhere we go!
Hi Crystal. I transitioned for 11 months. I didn't want to relax anymore because I felt like the "creamy crack" was taking life from my hair and just wasn't healthy or attractive. I have been natural since July 2018 and love it. I use your hair repair and growth shampoo/conditioner. The slip and feel is amazing. Can't wait to see results. Thank you.
I LOVE how you cut her relaxed ends off. I’ve never seen it done that way and it’s genius! I big chopped after 9 months because I noticed my hair started thinning ( it wasn’t over processed, I think it was due to aging). I’ve been natural 7 years and love it.
I big chopped after leaving my box braids in too long. I was literally tearing my hair apart when it came to the detangle portion of the take down and I was like, screw this....where's the scissors. And after it was all said and done I was in LOVEEEEEEE!!! this was in June.
Yes, definately do the big chop, been there done that. Reason being it looks much healthier and eliminate the risk of damaging the healthier hair. She has a lot of patients to wait that long for the chop, lol. it looks so much healthier now, beautiful hair!
When I decided to return to natural, I grabbed clippers and shaved my head. I think I hyperventilated, but it’s been 10 years this year, and I have no regrets.
I really see what you mean with the “dead” relaxed hair. Her looks 💯 % better after cutting it off. It’s gorgeous!! Her hair reminds me of moist chocolate cake when it’s natural.
I have always had curly hair, as a black women, when I did a big chop from the perm, I was very happy. It took twenty something years for me to go back to my natural hair. So glad I had.
I went all natural 4 years ago and it took about a full year. I didn’t do the big chop and my hair is looks amazing now. Didn’t have much breakage at all but would’ve done the big chop if needed though.
@@snoodysnoody8118 I only washed my hair every three weeks and used Mielle moisturizing shampoo when I did wash. Once a month I used Apogee two-step protein treatments and kept my hair in no-tension hair styles, like a ponytail without a scrounge. I also did NOT use any heat at all. I hope this helps.
And you know seeing another pro stylist comb thru wet hair but yet another 'pro' stylists says not to it just shows you that you just have to know your own hair to know what really works. Hair looks fine and good too. I know for me combing thru while wet is fine. Some people don't like to do it and so they detangle on dry hair with oil so it is up to the person. This is why even pro's shouldn't be telling people things in absolutes.
Same here! Had my last perm on April 2016 and hair broke off cause of bleach, relaxers and heat and more. Never did big chop just transitioned through braids and trim and every now and then would cut hair into bob and today my hair is extremely healthy and down my back. I only wear braids or a silk press(most of the time)
I don't hesitate. I've cut my shoulder length hair down to two inches. The pandemic was a great opportunity to literally shave it off. My relaxed hair was of no use to my beauty goals anymore so I felt liberated taking it down to the scalp. 💁🏽♀️❤
Yes, I would cut the relax hair out. That was me some time ago. Because I call the strings of hair looks like spider webs because they are thin and looks bad. Once you finish, it going to be awesome. Great job getting g the big chop.
Yes, I wore my hair natural for some time, got bored and had a relaxer put in. I am trying to let grow, but it's slow. And from having it cut so much, the back is shorter than the front. So I think it's not long enough to have the big chop yet. I liked the outcome of the young ladies hair. Can't wait until my hair is long enough to get the silk press. I know I have to be patient.😏
I did my transition during the year long lockdown! Did not do the big chop at all, just trimmed it as I was was starting to grow out and I have never looked back! I have good healthy hair which is now in a puff! Love my natural hair. Hi from North Wales 🏴 Uk ( love your channel) xx
I love the way you preserve as much ends as you can. I absolutely haaate seeing any of my length go so seeing a stylist be careful to cut only what is necessary is really awesome. Knowing me I would do what this lady did I’d hold on to the ends for a good minute 🥴 but I know I don’t always make the best decisions lol
I am watching my second video. I am HOOKED! You do such a great job explaining everything, and your voice is so soothing! I’m an old white girl, but I love your channel.
I haven't put a relaxer in 8 months!!!!! Looking at this video I think I am ready for the big chop, once I take these braids out. I wish you were near me. It's very hair to find versatile stylist. Can you also do more styles after the big chop?
I am white and used to do hair. I have never done african american hair. I do not know why but watching your videos fascinates me! You are like a magician!!!!!!
Ooh thanks for this video. I've done a big chop at least 3 times over the past 9 years. I want to say that each time I went 9 months and then cut the relaxed or texturized ends off. My hair doesnt like relaxer anymore, and as thick and hard to comb it is I find it to be healthier and more versatile now
This is good and her hair looks nice. What I like about this stylist is the maintenance that she gave her client. Those conditioner treatments makes a world of difference. I would also recommend getting steam treatments. They work awesome for the hair as well.

I went natural about 20 years ago. I have never had a big chop, but I always wanted to. I guess I was too scared. Lol. You do an excellent job with your clients.
I did the big chop in November. I am so happy I got rid of that dead hair. It is so thick and healthy now. I am a stylist and how can I do other people's hair and mine isn't healthy. I am too busy to fuss with 2 different textures. Chop it and keep it moving. It will grow back
Her hair looks great! 👍I like to see the face of the client as well and see how well the style frames her face and with makeup as well, appearing as a makeover. I love the before and after looks.
Thank you for sharing. I love this style. I don’t know how to wear my natural hair in these kind of styles and I want to learn how to do them without damaging my natural hair. Her hair is so healthy and I want mine to look like that. Thank you again!!
The cancer treatments made my hair fall out, so I decided to go natural. It took me five hours to do my relaxed hair and it still takes the same amount of time. Hair was healthy relaxed and is healthy natural.
Chopped off a good 5 inches of relaxed hair last month, leaving it layered and resting right on my shoulders. BEST decision of my life. My 4a curls are so defined, healthy and full of moisture, and I have no tangling when blowing it out. You are right, I cut off a lot more than just my hair that day, and I didn’t have the patience to do it slowly (it also will continue to break up the shaft). I look forward to this journey with healthy hair!
Very informative video. I've been considering the big chop because I'm at the point in my life where I'm just over it. I was natural over 5 years ago. It was awesome in the summertime, simple wash and go style, but when that cold weather came in it was back to the "creamy crack". I'm 47 and lost 40lbs during the pandemic shutdown. I'm just getting back into my work outs after falling off due to my daughter's heart operation back in July. I've worn sew in weaves and crochet and my scalp is "tired. I'm realizing that the less stress I put on my hair, the more comfortable and peaceful I am. Also figuring out what to do with my hair to accommodate working out has been a challenge. I want to do the big chop, but I'm nervous about how short my hair will be and how to style it.
I did my big chop at the beginning of quarantine last year. It was the best decision I ever made. It’s growing back nicely but not as fast as I hoped. Nevertheless I’m glad I don’t need relaxers anymore.
Same thing happened to me when I went natural (both times) all the relaxed hair pretty much popped off… by time I was ready to chop there were only a few strands left.
Hello, Tuth be told I would not keep them because sooner or later it's gonna get worse. I'm impressed on you giving your client's a fantastic haircut and hairstyle. Continue being a great hairstylist and hope to see much more of your videos. God bless you and always stay safe.
This is the exact condition that my hair is in right now & I need a big chop & a trim also. NOTE: I wish that this professional hair stylist & specialist could do my hair! NOTE: She is "Amazing"!! 💜
I loved when I went to a barber and had 'the Big Chop' and went from shoulder length hair to hair about 2 inches. I found a stylist to coil my hair. I'm 62 and about ready to it my hair again...you do a good job teaching. Great style.
I waited 9 months to big chop because I did not want to let go of my long hair but when I did my hair flourished. Now I tell everyone that I see transitioning to “let it go” You will be glad once you see the results.
I big chopped after a year of transitioning. My mom and sister's didn't want me to cut it, but I did it anyway and fell immediately in love with my natural hair! Been natural ever since and still loving it!
No, I went through a big chop a year and a half ago. My stylist knew the old relaxed hair was dead weight and was full of split ends... so every time she did a braid foundation for the protective styles I wore... she cut some of the relaxed hair for about 3 months. My hair is healthy and strong, relaxer free!!!
I decided to go natural because my hair broke off severe. I had to cover my hair because of the breakages. I cut my hair after two months so it could grow healthy.
Been natural for 15 years. I’ve ran out of styles to do. I wear two strand twist and twist outs. Took me 1 year to chop it off when I decided to go natural.
I got vex and big chopped mine myself last Wednesday and it was freeing to do the chop and the fact that I did it myself it was liberating. Yes I felt that the relaxed hair needed to go. It was stifling the natural hair and it was horrible to me on wash day. CHOP THE HAIR OFF AND LET THE NATURAL COME THROUGH. Wish I saw you videos before I did it. I did cut at the demarcation but I would have tried your way of cutting. But doing it myself does not allow my hands to maneuver like yours. Plus I am not a hair dresser but I got the confidence to do it myself. Just hair it would grow back. LOL
Great video Crystal! Indeed, I would cut the relaxed hair! She has much more natural than relaxed and keeping it would have been unsightly and caused damage! 💯 Her end result was beautiful!❤️👍🏾
I would not hold on to the relaxed hair. The hair need to be healthy.. I made a mistake and cut all the straight hair myself. Realized I make a mistake and later went to my stylist.
Fantastic job! My hair was coming out after a major surgery and I had it cut very low. When it started growing back I kept braiding until it was back to the neck. Now I had the clarification. My hair is pass the back and trims is done to maintain the health of my hair.

Thank you for sharing. I love this style. I don’t know how to wear my natural hair in these kind of styles and I want to learn how to do them without damaging my natural hair. Her hair is so healthy and I want mine to look like that. Thank you again!!
I did a big chop about a year ago. After that my hair has grown so much.
Yesss Honey her hair looks amazing and much healthier
I appreciate this process! Looks healthy and beautiful!

Yes I would let that relaxed hair go.Her hair is so beautiful ❤️❤️ and you always do a excellent job.
As you washed and conditioned you could see the true curls coming through more and more, it was great.
Same thing happened to me when I went natural (both times) all the relaxed hair pretty much popped off… by time I was ready to chop there were only a few strands left.
Hello,
Tuth be told I would not keep them because sooner or later it's gonna get worse.
And my hair was sooo damaged from relaxer over processing and glued in weaves.
That looks a trillion zillion percent better!!!!!
I decided to go natural because my hair broke off severe. I had to cover my hair because of the breakages. I cut my hair after two months so it could grow healthy.
Looking way better.with out those dead ends great job
My left side is definitely denser than the right and I certainly have different textures! I'm relaxed by the way...
I went to cosmetology school and learned a lot but thanks to you I am learning more
Been natural for 15 years.
💯 Her end result was beautiful!❤️👍🏾
wow, I would have cried with that big chop but hoped she'd like it, I'm sure it will all grow back and even healthier.
Yes, let the dead relaxed ends go! ❤️ love this
No! No no I prefer your way! It just looks so much better like a revised new head of hair
Relaxing your hair is deathly for the hair. If black hair girls don't relax their hair and just take good care their hair will bloom and grow
I think you are doing a very good job her hair look so healthy now she still have a lot of hair👍
In teddy pendergrass voice I think I better let it go just kidding I would get rid of the relaxed ends definitely.
old school 😉💜
That fro is gorgeous!!
I would not hold on to the relaxed hair. The hair need to be healthy.. I made a mistake and cut all the straight hair myself. Realized I make a mistake and later went to my stylist.
Jer hair is beautiful 😍
Fantastic job! My hair was coming out after a major surgery and I had it cut very low. When it started growing back I kept braiding until it was back to the neck. Now I had the clarification. My hair is pass the back and trims is done to maintain the health of my hair.
