  • This video is for Edexcel IGCSE Biology 9-1 but is relevant for many GCSE Biology courses. It covers these specific objectives from the syllabus
5.17B Describe the process of micropropagation (tissue culture) in which explants are grown in vitro.
5.18B Understand how micropropagation can be used to produce commercial quantities of genetically identical plants with desirable characteristics.
You can download a teaching PowerPoint for this topic here: www.mrexham.co...
Or one for the whole course here: www.mrexham.co...

thanks a lot, but can i ask why plants are vulnerable to pests if they are genetically modified?

Well if you're still here then here is the reason.
Plants which have better characteristics ( therefore the genes coding for the characteristics) are chosen to be genetically modified. The explant ( the tissue taken from the plant to be genetically modiffied) is micropropagated and when it grows, it is micropropagated too. Over a few generations, the same genes are propagated and the plants with the less desirable characteristics( therefore the different alleles they have that code for the characteristics) start to decrease in number. Now when almost all plants contain the same alleles with less variation and diversity, if a disease or a pest that can attack the plant appears, it might end up quickly affecting all of the plants causing a massive loss. Sorry for the excess explanation, I am still a school student and dont know how to summarise it properly
