DIY CO2 (Yeast and Sugar Method) with Results - Does it really work?

- Hi Everyone,
In this video, I would like share my experiences with the DIY CO2 method. I have been using this method for the last three months and documenting the results.
Recipe used for DIY CO2 is as follows :
1/2 Litre Coke Bottle
1 Cup white Sugar
1/8 tsp Yeast
1/8 tsp baking soda
Room Temperature : 24-30 Degree Celsius
Co2 Duration : Lasts for 14 to 20 days
Size of aquarium : 5 Gallons
This method works best for small aquariums . Also, CO2 levels can be controlled by adjusting the quantity of yeast & Sugar . In general , more yeast results in more Co2 for a shorter duration

I have found that the gelatin addition technique helps control the fluctuations a bit and makes the duration up to a month

Nice. Algae also comes from excess nutrient load and too much/strong lighting, not just lack of Co2. Q: Why not stick it in the opposite rear corner 1) it will be nearer to the plants that utilize the Co2, 2) out of sight more and 3) place the diffuser under some plants, out of the light, less algae, less cleaning the diffuser.
For me after 4 to 5 hours co2 release

I have taken to using a carboy and fermenting moonshine mash. If I'm careful with the formation I'm then able to (live in NZ where its legal) distill the moonshine after.
I get 1litre of 180proof moonshine every 14-16 days aswell as have a luscious tank.

i’m using a diy co2 system and my BBA has gotten rlly bad and the fluctuations aren’t helping. unfortunately i can’t use flourish excel bc i have some snails and i’m concerned it’ll harm them :(
@@El1society yes , that is one limitation of the diy co2 system . The fluctuations can be really bad. It gets worse if your room temperature constantly changes. Try injecting 3% hydrogen peroxide (about 2ml) directly on the BBA . It’s easily available , cheap and less harmful than excel . It breaks down into oxygen and pure water , so no chemical residue in your tanks
Hello I'm a new aquascaper and I'm still searching for the good co2 diy system for my tank...and I'm glad I found your channel...can I ask a question?... actually I already make some research about this method...the yeast will produce CO2 and alcohol at the same time...I found that most people will add one bottle which have tap water in it to filter the alcohol and just let the CO2 itself to run in the tank...but I see that your shrimp looks good in that tank...can I know do u add anything in your tank to control the water parameters?
Welcome to the club :) . Yes , you are right. Adding a second bottle with plain water in it will help ‘clean’ the co2 before it goes into this tank . However , the problem is that 1) this method needs too many connections which can lead to leaks 2) looks messy due to the multiple bottles and pipes . I started with the two bottle approach , but over the years realised that hardly any alcohol / residue will enter the tank even with the one bottle method , as long as you don’t fill the solution to the brim. Leave a gap of about 1-2 inches to ensure that only the gas can escape into the tank. You will be fine . All the best :) 👍

How long can last that bottle?
Cool video! I’m also running a diy co2 system just like this right now and I was wondering how important a co2 drop checker is? I honestly don’t want to buy one and it doesn’t look like you have one here but how can I before I’m not overloading my tank with co2? Thanks!
Thank you ❤️! You don’t really need a co2 drop checker for this system . The co2 output is very minimal , and be assured - it will be never overload your tank unless you are not covering the top & running a filter for some sort of water agitation . Pressurised co2 is much more stronger but if you are only looking at adding minimal co2 for your plants , this is a great option . Good luck ☺️

Thank you , Benjamin. I appreciate it. Personally , I have only used dry yeast or baker’s yeast . However , fresh yeast should work too . Maybe start with the same amount and see how long the co2 production lasts . Good luck

Thank you . You can find them on amazon or eBay. They are also commonly sold in aquarium shops. At some places they are called ‘one-way valve’
Don't know why..i did put the yeast like your way with warm water but it didn't raised up bubble like yours...if like my case ,with no bubble raise up can I just add to the bottle of sugar bottle and move to the next step like the video?😅
Yes , you should be able to . Just that , the bubbles help you confirm if your yeast is alive . Another technique is to add a pinch of sugar to the water & yeast mixture . This will speed up the yeast activation process and show the bubbles 👍. Good luck to you ☺️

@@weelianggan8529 can you try by removing the diffuser , and checking if you see bubbles in a few hours ? If you still don’t get bubbles , it probably means the yeast has gone bad and is not activating . Another reason might be that you have a leak somewhere 😶

Also if root tabs or fertilizers were used?
How often did you do water changes & the amount % removed?
Did you turn off co2 at night?

Light: I am using Nicrew skyled plus 18-24 inch light on full brightness. It runs on a timer and switched on from 10am to 4pm
Fertilizer: No root tabs. I use 1ml NilocG thrive fertilizer once a week (along with water change)
Substrate: Fluval Stratum aqua soil
Water change : 30% water change every Saturday
Co2 : no , I don’t switch off the co2. There is no good way to do this as the co2 keeps building up all the time and switching it off may cause the bottle to explode. I could remove the diffuser out of the tank every night , but that is not sustainable long term.
However , the co2 via this method is minimal and doesn’t affect my shrimps at all . So it’s fine to leave it on all the time 👍

@@captain_guppy it will not explode . Just use soft drink bottles. I am using this from past 1 year . Morning 10.30 I srt co2 and add fertiliser by 12 I srt light till 8 p.m and close co2 I didn't had any problems still .

Hello there I don't know if you will see this but i am a beginner n i wanted to know how long (in terms of time) can this amount of yeast solution provide me CO2 and when do i need to change the solution
Typically 2-4 weeks. Once it isn't outputting as much as you'd like, dump it out and start fresh. If you just add more sugar, the level of alcohol will kill the yeast.
I saw a video where they had the co2 go into another water bottle then to the tank. Is that better? Also do you take it out at night?
@@ayyyeens1001 it’s considered better as the second bottle cleans any residue that may enter the aquarium . But I have found it unnecessary . I just use one bottle to avoid cluster . Also , no need to remove at night if your aquarium is open (no lid) . The co2 production is minimal with this method and won’t affect the fish as long as there is no lid

Is Chek valve is required? Can you do it without the check valve?
Check valvues are cheap enough why not use them
Do i need to have air pump filter or hub filter for using diy co2?
No , not required . Infact more co2 will remain in the water column without an air pump or bubbler . You may need a filter if your tank is not cycled / or if you have fish in the tank though
After the completion of the setup how much time it takes to start bubbling?? It's been an hour but still no bubble spotted 😔☹️

Depends on the room temperature actually . During winters , it sometimes takes about 8 hours till you see co2 in the aquarium . Maybe wait for a few hours more
@@captain_guppy Make sure you have it fully sealed with super glue or something equivalent...I tried hot glue and it was a no-go
Heyy! I dont know if your going to see this comments! First thank you! I have like 1 bubble /sec ors 1 bubble every 2 sec. Is it okay for a 5 gallons? If not, how can i reduce the co2? Thx!
Hey there ! Yes , 1 or 2 bubble per second is perfect for a 5 gallon . You shouldn’t have a problem growing most plants as long as you have a good light and fertiliser. You can’t reduce or increase the co2 with this setup and that is its biggest limitation 🤷♂️ . Infact the co2 production will also fluctuate with temperature changes and this can cause algae . But all this can be managed with regular maintenance . Good luck to you 👍☺️
I did the same , because I Cant turn CO2 of at night , I just rum a airpump with stone at night...dont know if it help but I do it to protect my fish.
How many days 1 bottle solution works in your tank ?
My room temperature is around 25-26 deg Celsius . At this temperature , I change the solution every 2 weeks
What would you do if I don’t have co2 after 12+ hours?
I think you might be having a leak . Try applying soap water to the joints and see if there are any leaks . If not , the following may help
1. Make sure your dry yeast is activated before adding to the sugar solution . You need to see it foaming. Sometimes if the yeast is dead , it won’t activate
Use warm water , a pinch of sugar and yeast to activate the yeast separately
2. Use slightly warm water in the solution the first time you refill . This helps speed up the process and you can test if your setup is working
3. Try running the setup without a diffuser / or simply an air stone connected , to check if any co2 is being produced

Wher is ur second bottle to clean co2
I stopped using the second bottle as it increases risk of co2 leakage (too many connections) . As long as the solution is one or two inches from the cap , I have never experienced it getting into the aquarium.
17 hours passed and nothing happened 😢
How long did it take for your co2 to kick in?
It takes about 12 hours for me the bubbles . I fix it at night , and see the co2 by morning

What to do in night time ?
Just leave it on . As long as you have an open tank with some surface agitation , it won’t impact your fish or shrimps . The co2 concentration is too small

It’s a small hang on back filter : Azoo Mignon 60
What's the minimum pressure level in PSI required for your diffuser? The one I have had 30 psi minimum pressure and the sugar and yeast method did not product enough co2 to penetrate that
I use Aquario Neo diffusers and they work well with this method. You are right - some diffusers are specially made for pressurised setups , and they may not work with this method . I believe the pressure in a diy system should be less than 200psi

@@MrGsxr10001 😂 yes , very likely!! The reason I mentioned 200psi as the limit is because (based on what I have read) Coca-Cola bottles are built to withstand a maximum of 200 psi . Although the pressure in the bottle due to the diy co2 would be nowhere close to that limit. Infact, it would be far below that . My point being , it’s safe to use

Do you agitate the water with anything? how do the shrimp get oxygen?
I generally use a small canister filter or a hang on bag filter , and then position the water outlet right at the surface level . Works really well with surface agitation

No click bait here . These are indeed results from using diy co2 for three months . The purpose of making this video was to show that you don’t really need a fancy co2 system for good plant growth . Yes , the clip at 1:58 was shot ‘after’ the three months period , but I included it just to put some order to the video. You do have a good eye 👍. Good luck with your aquariums
