Well i've been dropping half a pill a day in my 20l, it's a lot but with surface agitation it keeps the c02 levels nice. And my Monte-Carlo is finally after one and a half month taking roots and spreading.
Note: i does seem that my plabts who needs c02 still don't like the environment, so i think i'll stop using these. Thank you for running the experiment and telling us the results!

CO2 tablets are Baking Soda. You can raise pH and kH with Baking Soda... and a very small amount of CO2 will be released as it reacts with acids in the water. Only good if someone has very low kH and very soft water but wants to keep livebearers or Africans.

I'm thankful you did a water test after the tablets. I am surprised your PH and KH went up so high. I thought CO2 is supposed to help lower a high pH, which is what I am trying to achieve.

Everyone who uses CO2 tablets finds out that it raises their pH and hardness. They're all most likely sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) tablets. It's often used in vitamin or antacid tablets to produce that 'fizz' as it dissolves. As your pH gets higher, it takes longer to dissolve the tablets so even though the reaction does produce CO2, it can't ever give nearly enough needed. They're not wrong in that it does produce CO2, just not in the quantities we need.

When you first showed the tablets the first thought that jumped to mind was that these are seltzer tablets. The results of your water testing would seem to confirm my suspicions. Seltzer tablets are made of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda pressed into a tablet). They should definitely increase carbonate hardness because they're directly adding carbonates to the water.

Few things to note here: They write CO₂ wrong. Co (with a little o) is Cobalt, a heavy metal which is completely different from carbon dioxide. Also they change how they write it throughout their text. Also they use a large 2 instead of a small one at the bottom, which I guess is acceptable, but for a company really embarassing.
2nd of all my guess is that it's a form of carbonate/bicarbonate, judging from the rate at which it dissolves most likely soddium or potassium bicarbonate. Which would increase pH as well as carbonate hardness. Bicarbonates and sometimes carbonates can be used by plants directly (e.g. elodea/egeria densa; myriophyllum heterophyllum), known as bicarbonate-assimilation, however that requires a lot of energy (compared to using carbon dioxide directly) and can't be used by all plants.
So it's god damn stuipid to use those.

It's not Co2 in the pills but some kind of acid, like seachems Acid buffer.
The way it works is it dissolves available carbonate hardness (Kh) in your water into available co2.
Seems like these pills are a combination of acid and alkalinity buffer, to try and maintain a stable ph while dissolving the carbonate hardness into co2.. and clearly doesn't do a great job at it lol.
This is also probably why some people see actual changes and others don't see any change at all, because it depends on your water parameters and what is available for these pills to alter.

    • @BioTechproject27
      @BioTechproject27 2 роки тому

It's the opposite of an acid, it's a base. A carbonate/bicarbonate to be exact, probably mixed with an acid, most likely citric acid as it has a solid form to form carbon dioxide and a citric acid salt. [on a side note: CO₂, please, not Co2 (Co ist Cobalt, a heavy metal)]

There are actually Boxes you submerge and dropt the tablets in. The CO2 that raises up in this Box is then kept in some kind of Topper so it can diffuse into the water over time. This might increase the effect of this tablets and I think that was what they tried to tell you on the packaging. I dont know if this helps a lot though.

@@MJAquascaping Wouldnt put this into my tank either but this topper style reservoirs are also used with biological CO2 generators, as this seems to increase the amount of CO2 that actually diffuses into the water over time.
This might be something that could be tested in some future videos on the no CO2 tank. This way we could compare if one of this systems might be a low budget alternative to pressurized CO2.
      Spoiler: I doubt it.

if you want to use co2 tablets more effectively, place the tablets in the diffuser box, so that the gas is trapped in the box, then dissolves with water. box I mean like the bottle upside down on the tropica co2 system. in my country using a DIY box for co2 tablets, effectively lowering the ph from 7.4 to 6.7 and getting a green co2 indicator. You can replace the tablet with a cylinder of co2, and save your money, because an inverted bottle doesn't need high pressure to fill it. only 1 bubble per second, put the co2 hose into the bottle without going through the diffuser, you don't really need high pressure.

This does not make any sense :) Just think about the basic laws of physics. In my tank I use 1.5kg bottles with CO2, this corresponds to 765 liters of CO2 gas at standard pressure and temperature. Each of these "magic" tabs generate roughly 100ml of CO2 (according to descriptions of similar tabs I found in my local shop). That means you would need nearly 8 thousands of these tabs to substitute single 1.5kg bottle of pressurized CO2 :D

Lmao, these CO2 tablets man i swear... You know what works better if u really want a cheap CO2 compared to these tabs especially in a nano tank like the one in the video? simply do a 20% - 25% water change every once or two days. I promise you the amount of growth and CO2 it'll brought to the tank are much much more significant than those useless tabs, i even managed to grow a decent carpet in my low tech tank using that method.

Firstly, I would guess that whatever chemical reaction that is taking place is, in fact, producing Co2. It would be interesting to have a co2 drop checker directly over the dissolving pill to verify. However, clearly the amount of Co2 it is creating is a tiniest fraction of what a Co2 system creates, so it isn't shocking to me at all it didn't register. Also, my thoughts were kinda the same from the beginning that he thought about in the end. Surely the chemical reaction is creating more than Co2, so what other compound is being created and being added to the tank. For those wanting to add Co2 to your tank, but looking for some system less involved than even a DIY system, I would think that these pills just aren't worth the negatives that come along with them given the miniscule benefit they add.

Mark, how about the Ista Disposable CO2 Can? Have you ever tried it? It seams like it could be a good low budget alternative

Hey MJ would you consider having a skimmer on that last tank? cause I see the bubbles getting stuck on the surface. Nice videos man, love them, you are one of the few that the experiments are helping me all the time! Cheers!

You did it incorrectly, you need to add a pill 5 gallons per pill, and its a weekly thing not a daily thing buddy

Thank you for releasing this. I have also tried them and didn't see any difference. If you did it would likely be a placebo effect and had to do with some other variable.
I started using DIY CO2 recently with the baking soda and citric acid method. I have seen lots of improvement in the plants in that aquarium. That CO2 runs high pressure so I may be able to get away with hooking 2 tanks up to it.
I have had issues with the liquid from the bottle getting into the lines going into the tank. Any advise for preventing that?

Thanks for sharing! Sorry no advise for your issue, I've never used the DIY citric acid and baking soda setup apart from the SS reactor

Which mixture and diffusor are you using for your DIY-CO2-bottle on your 20L Cube? I am still using a Dennerle CO2 Micro Flipper with Bio-CO2 on my 30L tank and was already thinking of a diffusor upgrade, but i tried one from my father and the pressure wasn't enough. Enjoying your videos, keep it up.👍

I'm using the diffusers from Aquario, love them! The mixture is basically 250 gr sugar and 250 gr water. I heat that up and then add in 3 gelatin leaves. The entire recipe is here ua-cam.com/video/OtpfltN15-8/v-deo.html
