Sounds like something from the 70s. I really enjoy the amount of missing songs appearing these past few years. Alot of them sound great too. Hopefully we find an origin soon.
I like that late 70s/early 80s tv show vibe too. If you liked this, I recommend listening to Heart to Heart by Kenny Loggins. It really gives off a feel to a 70s/80s sitcom theme to me.
To be honest, I was never expecting Johnny to be found, but today, the title and artist were just discovered! This gives me hope for other songs such as Like The Wind and Everyone Knows That.
Como muchos mencionan, parece ser una pieza bien trabajada en estudio. A mi me suena mas a que fue hecha para algún programa de televisión que nunca salió a la luz. Por como habla del personaje es como si siguiera una trama.
This song reminds me of when I was a little girl, having dinner in a restaurant with my parents and siblings under some yellowish lights, settled on a leather sofa that squeaks at the slightest movement, celebrating Mother's Day, back then, without any worries. ...it's strange but this song became my safety place, I hope Piero Cotto can release the full version, I would be happy

Italian here. This is likely a piece of stock music internally produced by RAI (our national public broadcaster) itself. RAI has always hired minor artists to do so, and they also are proverbially terrible at cataloguing and releasing their self-produced music. There are, to this day, some TV dramas that have songs unfindable on Spotify and whose author is unknown to the general public.

Not that this really contributes to the search for this song, but I think the song is about a homeless person who is trying to convince himself that his situation is not as bad as it may seem.
The use of "penny or a Mark" suggests this song could be German in origin. I don't know if German speakers in the pre-Euro era used "penny" to describe the pfennig, but I wouldn't discount it.
I found this song, this song was used as the ending theme for a program called "La dominica sportiva" and it was shown SPECIFICALLY on June 5, 1983, there is a video of this ending on DailyMotion but UA-cam won't let me put the link here.
Sorry to break it to you, but that is the video where the original poster got the song from. At this point it's about identifying the title and artist in hopes of finding a higher quality version.
I showed this to my dad the other day. Obviously he didn't recognize it but he brought up a pretty good point: He said a lot of the lyrics sound poorly translated. Like they weren't originally in english. Most notably "the grass is green" was a very awkward line for him cuz it's just a blatant statement lol. The weird almost mistranslated lyrics + the fact this came from an italian sports program leads me to believe he really might be onto something here. Perhaps we should try looking on the italian side of this weird case.
That's what i thought aswell! the lyrics seems quite odd, i suspect that the writer of the song was italian, or atleast not english/american. I've tried reaching out to RAI (the tv company that broadcasted "La domenica sportiva") sometime ago. Unfortunately it's difficult to contact them via email, even for me (an italian). I was thinking of going to Florence just to ask them directly at this point lol
"Doesn't have a realistic mind Or a word to say" This Johnny guy is just like me fr edit: I haven't checked on this song in a long time and when I return it's been found? Nice.
Personally, I believe that this song MIGHT be “It’s Green” by The Bloody Fire. The vocalist of The Bloody Fire, Enzo Draghi sounds similar to the vocalist in this song and he has also done some music for TV. There’s almost nothing about The Bloody Fire online except for the Discogs page and a forum page. There’s two copies of the single on Discogs but they’re very expensive however.
Sounds like it was released in 1981-1983. A lot of songs have this production, "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash, "Only The Lonely" by The Motels and "Hearts" by Martin Balin are some examples.
Is funny how many in the comments assume all kinds of artists, but nobody said anything about the singer being „Joe Cocker”, his voice is really recognisable, it's like footprints, it's his tradeemark, the way his voice sounds like an old Bloodhound barking in his hoarse voice, it's him, the lyrics too, John Copker's songs always include a story in it, most of them being ironic and funny like this one. Tho is true I haven't heard of this song before (also because I don't often listen to Joe Cocker) but I am pretty sure it might be a less known song by Joe.
If it was a less known song by joe we would have found it yet, joe is a famous artists and I think if it was made by him there would be any credits in the video and it would have copyright, but unfortunately, none of these things were done.

My Theory who sounds the best. This song is just a song talking about apparently "John Conner" a boat driver. In 1970 ( i think he's Italian) but anyways Italy was really good at Boat Driving, so it's possibly a Italian (or American) guy named Johnny.

2 theories. 1: this is a commerical song made specifically for the speedboat race, and was not uploaded as a song. 2: theres also something around the 4 minute mark, a credit to the "musica della silca d apertura". and it says the speedboat broadcast weirdly. -maybe I'm missing something?- edit: the credit saying the broadcast could be solid proof that this was made by the broadcast. which is evidenced by the fact that looking for johnny turns up absolutely fucking nothing
Hey, italian here. the phrase u mentioned said: "Musica della sigla di apertura" - roughly means "Opening music theme"- which is not in the original video (basically the ending credits). This program, "La domenica sportiva", was aired on italian TV channel RAI Sport 2, now dead. I don't think Peter Van Wood, the one written in the ending credits, is the actual song artist. There's another name that caught my attention. Maria Laura Carboni is mentioned as "music consultant". Maybe she's the key. There's also another way to trynna find the song: TV channel RAI has an archive that you can ask for via email. I'll try to contact them during these days to see if the can get the song name or at least the artist name. Let's see.
I guess I'll keep you guys updated based on my findings in this investigation through replies in this comment. Feel free to contribute your findings with me. We need to solve this mystery! Today is December 27, 2023. A name that comes up quite frequently is Enzo Draghi. Initially, I dismissed this after a few minutes as I believed his works sound nothing like this particular song and his voice is too different. Enzo also mostly sings in Italian, and I don't know a single song of his that is sung in 100% English aside from the It's Green/Life single by his band called The Bloody Fire, released in 1971, though I didn't think it was a voice match. But after diving in again, I admit that I cannot deny a vocal similarity. Turns out Enzo also has another band called Bee Hive, with their first studio release being in 1986. While a lot of his music with that band is still different compared to this mysterious song, one Bee Hive song stood out to me as the closest match I can get to. The song "Fire", uploaded here on UA-cam by TemyLove, sounds a lot like the singer here in some sections, most notably around the 1:27 mark of that song where the highs there match the highs found here when he sings "or from where he came". Of course, while Bee Hive's first album was released three years after this 1983 edition of La Domenica Sportiva, the band did start the same year, so you would think it could be a possible Bee Hive recording that made it to air before their debut album. The only problem with this theory, however, is that Bee Hive is a band reserved for an Anime called Kiss Me Licia, which was adapted from a manga the year prior, so I think it would be wrong to assume the Johnny song came from that band. La Domenica Sportiva probably wouldn't have the rights to play a Bee Hive song given the circumstances. There's no character named Johnny in the Kiss Me Licia series anyways, so it would seem weird to me that the show would have a song about Johnny. It also seems like his contributions to TV shows during the 80's was in collaboration with Augusto Martelli Orchestra, which has a different style in comparison to this Johnny song. One other bit of information I found is that he joined the vocal group Paola Orlandi during the early 80's after his military service came to an end. Again, different music style. But it also says in his Italian Wikipedia bio that Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Gentle Giant were some of his musical influences of the 70's, and I think it's possible to have influences like those to create a song like this in the 80's. Unless if this truly was a song by him that he sung solo and kept off the radar, or sung in a different group that managed to remain undocumented in his history, I find it unlikely that Enzo Draghi is the vocalist of Johnny based off the information I have. A vocal similarity doesn't mean a vocal match, but there's no denying the voices sound similar.
Today is December 28, 2023. As of now, Doug Parkinson feels like the closest match to me. After listening to "I'll Be Around" alongside Johnny, I can't help but feel a 1:1 match in both voice and pronunciation. The musical style between the two songs feels really similar too. Additionally, La Domenica Sportiva didn't exclusively use music by Italian artists, such as in the 30 Settembre 1979 episode (also uploaded by Nik8888olas on DailyMotion) where they played "You're The One That I Want" by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, which was from a movie soundtrack (Grease). But still, it's anyone's guess, and I definitely don't believe the theory that this was a song made especially for that broadcast since the other songs they broadcast were all pretty recognizable. So, with the information I have at hand, I'm starting to believe it's more likely this came from someone not Italian. Though, I may end up changing my mind again in a matter of hours, as I've been having a lot of back-and-forths on this investigation, hah! But of course one thing I wonder is why would a non-European make a reference to a mark? Perhaps this song was a bonus track for a Germany or Finland release? Or maybe I'm wrong and this is a European singing this?
Today is December 29, 2023. I thought of another possibility. "Hadn't got a penny or a mark" is a lyric in this song, which makes a lot of us think that the songwriter is European, perhaps German, but does that make us infallible with our assumption? What if the songwriter wasn't German and was just looking for a monetary reference to match "Johnny in the middle of the park"? Dollar doesn't rhyme with park, nor does lira, pound, money, etc. You can probably make buck sound like park, though it's not an exact rhyme and probably would've sounded dorky, which may be a reason why he stuck with mark. If my hypothesis is correct, that would beg the question, did Johnny have to be in a park? Could the lyrics been rewritten as such: "Johnny in the middle of the street, waiting for tomorrow" "Hasn't got a dime or food to eat, or a road to follow" Obviously, being in the middle of the street could have been misinterpreted, which is probably why the writer stuck with Johnny being in a park. Besides, when you think of where homeless people camp, the first thing that comes to mind is a park, right? So it probably made sense to write the lyrics as such and he needed a currency to rhyme with it. I don't know. I could be wildly wrong, but it's just a thought.
Today is December 30, 2023. Here's a list of what I believe to be all the possible song titles, from most to least likely: -Johnny Had A Little Dream -Johnny -A Little Dream -Johnny In The Middle Of The Park -The Grass Is Green -(Any other title that doesn't draw references to the lyrics) And here's a list of some commonly thought vocalists, in no particular order: -Enzo Draghi -Doug Parkinson -Massimo Vita -Bill Medley (Of course, we shouldn't limit our search to just these four!) I strongly believe the title of the song isn't going to have weird combinations of Johnny, like "Johnny Green" or "Johnny's One Night Stand", etc., and searching for obscure songs like that will probably get us nowhere. I also believe it's not very likely that Johnny will be spelled differently, such as "Gianni" or "Johnie". "Johnny" is the global spelling for his name, recognizable by pretty much everyone, and if there's a chance the singer is not Italian, I'd say a regional spelling would be all the less likely. Besides, why would an Italian be singing in English and making references to a foreign currency, only to give the character a regional spelling? Surely, it would make sense for the character to be named "Gianni" if he were singing in Italian. ...And that makes me believe more and more that the singer is not Italian. I'm gonna take a break from this for a few days and celebrate the new year. The brain works better when well rested. I'll be back on January 3, 2024. I wish everyone a happy new year!
I have a theory that it would be a demo of Blood, Sweat and Tears that, not getting the popularity I wanted, was archived, my theory is this since the voice of the one who sings Blood, Sweat and Tears is too similar, almost 94% to the This song itself doesn't fit that well as how come an Italian channel got this demo? but well it's just a theory this is my contribution I hope we can find this song.
Now I am wondering if this is possibly Michael Bolton or his brother Orrin. They don't sound exactly the same, but the gravely part sounds similar. Orrin sounds closer to our mystery singer in my opinion.

i have been making songs for 9 years now, started making them on pen and paper and recording with my acoustic guitar, then i put a pickup in my acoustic and combined that with SunVox as a pedal to make rock and metal music, i joined a band in early 2016 and we did mostly grunge covers but i also learned to produce and we recorded some demos produced by me, the lead singer was my girlfriend and she cheated on me, both of us left the band, the band was over. i then used my producing kickstart to start doing my own beats and tried to become a self produced rapper, but here's the thing, i never really recorded raps, i spent 100% of the time on beats, started making decent ones. started watching tutorials and experimenting "hmm, maybe i can make dubstep" "gonna try to make DnB", anyway. since then i have had a vaporwave project, a dubstep project, a breakcore project, a house project, brazillian baile, and even went back to rock music but as a one man band, that actually got quite famous, all different names cuz i wouldnt like to have vaporwave and brostep in the same channel under the same artist name, it just doesnt feel right. ALL OF THAT is to say that throughout ALL of this time( since my first melodramatic teenage open chord handrwritten songs, to my most recent and harshiest experimental dark noise music on a circuit bent casiotone with a fkload of guitar pedals chained into it) i have been shamelessly showing a LOT of songs, in ALL the genres i dipped my toes in, in a LOT of social networks and chatting apps and so on, even to unknown people that i have just met online, to online music producer groups, to subreddits, to every mainstream chatting app, i leaked out a LOT of my music. i wonder if one day someone in these countless places could have listened to some song, liked it enough but didnt remember where they got it from, and posted it into some unknown song forum and then became one of these "unknown mysterious songs", i also wonder if this song, and many of these unknown songs are literally just someone like me just making music and showing it around, online or not, and someone just stumbled upon it in some HD or in their phone's music app under the name "AUD20180711", or even in a stack of old cassette tapes or CDs, and posted it online for it to meet unseen recognition, and at the same time, this eerie quality of something forgotten, or some weird interdimensional song we werent even supposed to have captured randomly by a random person with a radio who just happened to record it, i dont know, everytime i see these now, my mind now goes for "oh its some introverted independent musician like me"

I showed this to my dad the other day. Obviously he didn't recognize it but he brought up a pretty good point:
He said a lot of the lyrics sound poorly translated. Like they weren't originally in english. Most notably "the grass is green" was a very awkward line for him cuz it's just a blatant statement lol. The weird almost mistranslated lyrics + the fact this came from an italian sports program leads me to believe he really might be onto something here. Perhaps we should try looking on the italian side of this weird case.
other comments are suggesting that "the grass" is referring to cannabis. which i guess checks out.
That's what i thought aswell! the lyrics seems quite odd, i suspect that the writer of the song was italian, or atleast not english/american.

2 theories.
1: this is a commerical song made specifically for the speedboat race, and was not uploaded as a song.
2: theres also something around the 4 minute mark, a credit to the "musica della silca d apertura". and it says the speedboat broadcast weirdly. -maybe I'm missing something?-
edit: the credit saying the broadcast could be solid proof that this was made by the broadcast. which is evidenced by the fact that looking for johnny turns up absolutely fucking nothing
Let's see.
@@SevenDiosmaho provato a cercare Maria ma non ho trovato nulla di interessante, hai qualche novità?
Could the lyrics been rewritten as such:
"Johnny in the middle of the street, waiting for tomorrow"
"Hasn't got a dime or food to eat, or a road to follow"
Obviously, being in the middle of the street could have been misinterpreted, which is probably why the writer stuck with Johnny being in a park. Besides, when you think of where homeless people camp, the first thing that comes to mind is a park, right? So it probably made sense to write the lyrics as such and he needed a currency to rhyme with it.
I don't know. I could be wildly wrong, but it's just a thought.
Today is December 30, 2023.
Here's a list of what I believe to be all the possible song titles, from most to least likely:
-Johnny Had A Little Dream
-Johnny
-A Little Dream
-Johnny In The Middle Of The Park
-The Grass Is Green
-(Any other title that doesn't draw references to the lyrics)
And here's a list of some commonly thought vocalists, in no particular order:
-Enzo Draghi
-Doug Parkinson
-Massimo Vita
-Bill Medley
(Of course, we shouldn't limit our search to just these four!)
I strongly believe the title of the song isn't going to have weird combinations of Johnny, like "Johnny Green" or "Johnny's One Night Stand", etc., and searching for obscure songs like that will probably get us nowhere.
I wish everyone a happy new year!

i have been making songs for 9 years now, started making them on pen and paper and recording with my acoustic guitar, then i put a pickup in my acoustic and combined that with SunVox as a pedal to make rock and metal music, i joined a band in early 2016 and we did mostly grunge covers but i also learned to produce and we recorded some demos produced by me, the lead singer was my girlfriend and she cheated on me, both of us left the band, the band was over.
i then used my producing kickstart to start doing my own beats and tried to become a self produced rapper, but here's the thing, i never really recorded raps, i spent 100% of the time on beats, started making decent ones.
started watching tutorials and experimenting "hmm, maybe i can make dubstep" "gonna try to make DnB", anyway.
since then i have had a vaporwave project, a dubstep project, a breakcore project, a house project, brazillian baile, and even went back to rock music but as a one man band, that actually got quite famous, all different names cuz i wouldnt like to have vaporwave and brostep in the same channel under the same artist name, it just doesnt feel right.
