Just found out about this song like 2 days ago and don't know the answer either (of course), but while thinking about it today, another theory popped into my head (sorry if it has already been mentioned). It started with a extremly popular German TV show called "Ich heirate eine Familie" from the 80's which I used to love as a kid. Around a decade ago, my mum had bought all the episodes on DVD and I rewatched them out of nostalgia. What struck me was that, in all scenes throughout the 14 episodes, when they were in a club or the radio got turned on, the same piece of music got played again and again. Maybe two for the entire series. It was just music that roughly sounded like what was on radio at that time. So I did a little digging back then and stumbled across a segment in low quality (maybe from a TV report) back in 2008/09 where a musician explained that some stock music for TV was recorded back in the day that was meant to resemble what was popular in a certain genre at the time. So lower budget TV shows could add this to scenes where a radio was turned on etc. for lot less money than if they had used popular released tracks. Since this song sounds like a carbon copy of so many tracks from the era (including the vocals vaguely resembling Depeche Mode to my ears), this may have been one of these pieces. Recorded only to be played somewhere indistinctly in the background. That's why it's so hard to find a band - there may have been none. If some studio musicians, who usually record these bits, went in and layed down their days' work of recording a track and then moved on, it might just have gotten lost afterwards.
It’s definitely possible. Another theory I’ve been thinking about is it’s from a movie soundtrack for which no official soundtrack album was released. What got me to thinking of this is there’s a song called “Face the Flood” at the end of the movie Invasion of the Space Preachers performed by a group called the Harpoons. While the song vaguely refers to what happens in the movie you’d never be able to figure that out from the song itself that it was from that movie unless you had seen the movie and heard it at the end. I don’t think it’s available anywhere except in the movie. I mean even known artists have stuff that isn’t easily available or has obscure origins, Gary Chapman did Bravehearts for the Ernest Goes to Camp soundtrack which I don’t think it exists outside the movie except on UA-cam. Falco’s Jeanny 3 “where are you now?” leaked in 2000 to the internet but it wasn’t confirmed until 2007 that it was from some demo material done with Bolland & Bolland.
@syc 297 movie soundtrack songs can be played on the radio but it may be contained on a movie soundtrack, if the movie wasn’t popular it might not have received a commercial release or a widespread release
@@yrly59e Maybe it was a national production that was kind of popular around those years but it never really got popular out of Germany and since in Germany they're very into national stuff of course they would play a song from a movie from their country.

Historical moment: The song has been identified as “Subways of your mind” by FEX on 4th November 2024, about 40 years after Darius recorded the song from the radio but could not identify it.
My mom used to work in the music industry and brought up something interesting. The reason some lyrics are indecipherable is because they likely aren't finished here. She said this is probably a demo tape. That means that the singer would just sing gibberish where there's no lyrics- just to see how it sounds. If this is true, then the actual, finished version of this song may be out there; but it might sound very different. (Different speed, different lyrics, etc.) So this definitely makes the search much more difficult.
So you are trying to tell me that people recognized a million of songs from eras like the Mesopotamian, Incan, Aztec, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, etc. And not a song from the 80s?
Its funny because as it was only played on a radio we actually dont have too much stuff... to analyze, in a classic way. We can only look around, think and ask but we will never get something like a physical puzzle that archeologist are able to connect to each other and get to some conclusion. We're definitely in worse situation with this song than them haha. Funny thing is that - warning, im thinking too much - i assume that as the civilization will get more advanced, just as we are compared to for example ancient Egipt, we will get more and more troubles analyzing more "recent history". Take for example internet and the Macromedia flash Player. I have no idea how it was in USA but here in my country a lot of kids were raised by the games, movies and other content create with this technology - which is basically dead and will be eradicated in next few years. In the future, lets say 500 years in future if theres gonna be any research on this specific period of time then if they will not have it written somewhere that we had such stuff then it could be impossble for them to realize because theres not much to really get your hands on to analyze. Its all in the cloud, everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
these were famous back in those ages, the problem here is that this noname song from the 80's wasn't famous, so most of the ppl that heard it don't remember

UA-cam sometimes gets claims for an independant youtube artist's own music, and claims the music for someone else, on the creator's own channel. Whole channels have been deleted because they insisted an original work wasn't created by the original uploader, even when all the proof is given.
In an interview with the synth player recently, he said that this was the proper studio recording of the song, and that nobody really knows how NDR got it. Not a demo like often thought, but the finished product. It sounds mysterious in this recording because it's out of pitch, but I'm sure that added to people's love for it over the years.
This video feels exactly how i feel when i go to a 10 year old video, the last comment was 8 years ago, and the channel hasn’t uploaded since 2012. Abandoned
This is simple.. you recorded on a tape the full song in 1984 then you moved on to cd, mp3.. and so 30 years later when you start to digitize your tapes.. if you didn't write the name then, you may not be able to remember it... By the way, if the song was from the 70's or earlier, it would have been easy to remember, but the song was recorded when cd was already in the market so people didn't listen to tapes very often anymore.. I believe the song is made in Germany or Austria.. I stayed in Switzerland from 1982 to 1987 and recorded 100 Cassettes from radio stations and this song is not on any..
@@reuvenlev4798 still crazy how no one on the internet can find a trace for this song. like how does everything else that should be associated with this song seemingly disappear throughout the years? surely there has to be something out there that could be tied to the origin of this.
@@reuvenlev4798 That's not my experience at all. People listened to and recorded tapes way into the 90's, at least here in Germany, where the mysterious song was recorded. I still used my walkman in 1996 as a teenager and this was actually common, because while there were discmen, they weren't shock resistant which made them annoying to carry around, but most importantly: Everyone loved mixtapes!
@@reuvenlev4798 I was born in 96 and I bought and listened to Cassettes to 2006 at least. From Chasperli, Pingu and Globi right up to Die Drei ???. That's the time I shifted to CDs, most home burned.
Listen to that, at 2:15 you can hear the vocals repeatedly muddy and clear up again, over and over. This is a side effect that happens when a cassette tape has been demagnetized. Based on the tech it was recorded on, and the genre of the actual music, I can gauruntee this recording was a made in the nineteen eighties. Not only that, but were it a radio recording, the instrumental opening would have been talked over. Meaning this was a mixtape. That means we can guess one of two things: this exact recording submission was either an early copy of the original, or it in fact IS the original.
Let's say the master cassette still exists, and wasn't destroyed or hasn't rotted away. Would it be difficult to properly clean up the audio and "remaster" it?
@@markjackson1989 god I wish, but no. Trying do that is exactly like trying to enhance a low res jpeg, the detail we want to clean up just doesn't exist anymore. :(
Except that according to the story by that Anton guy who is ultimately the source of this... he taped it himself off West German radio between 1981 and 1983, I believe. So it seems unlikely to be a mixtape. Would be great if we could at least get some form of verification that Paul Baskerville did indeed play this on NDR in the 80s. Until then there's still the theoretical possibility that the whole thing is an elaborate and entertaining prank :3
@@toad8840 when the actual source material is degraded there is only so much you can do. Sure there are programs that use math to try and smooth over it, but a lot of the time it just makes the audio sound weird or not genuine.

I found a blog a few years ago that was an archive of demo tapes rescued from a record label (I'm assuming) I can't find it now or recall the name of the blog , if I remember right there were something like 3 skips full of tapes rescued and then digitised all were downloadable most of them had hand drawn artwork for the "covers' ,certainly makes you think how many quality tunes are out there waiting to be found.
This makes me really sad actually. It’s like digging through someone’s attic and finding out they were an amazing artist who had to give up on their dreams or something. This is a really good song; could’ve been a hit
i don't know if it would've been a hit back then, this sounds like any old 80's post punk song which were everywhere at the time. people probably dismissed it as generic. nowadays though? this song is like a breath of fresh air.
@@yourdadsbbqbrisket8526 Its not the most original song but it's really solid catchy and has that atmosphere to it. Probably wouldn't have been a hit at least not in america.
Subways of your mind - FEX There's good reasons to believe that they are the ones who made this song. A user found an article talking about a band called FEX who won a talent contest in Bremen in Sep 1984 and that their music was described as rock with wave and pop influence. The article mentioned the people who were part of the band and the user said that he recognized one of them from a Horfest 83 band called Phret. The user got in touch with him and asked if he could send some of the songs they made. He did and the songs he send were; Heart in Danger Talking Hands Sunways of your Mind. The songs are up on youtube so make sure to include FEX when typing the songs in so that why you get better results. Theres a possibility (and anyone can correct me on this) that the one we've been listening to was actually a demo and the one FEX sent is the final version. The user told the band that their song is popular among the lost media. I guess theyre planning on getting back together to play the song together and i believe they are going to answer some of the questions people have. Now bare in mind while its very likely they're the ones who made it we can't exactly say the mystery is solved as the people who been researching this needs to find more evidence. So far, everything seem to point that what the people claimed to make the song are speaking the truth. I'm willing to believe what they say is true because I i find it hard to believe that they would go out of their way to make some darn good songs just to troll everyone. From the article and just the songs they've made, I do think they are the ones who made it. Plus a photo with their logo are available on reddit so checked it out. I'll try and update it if you guys want me too. It seems like the mystery has been solved. If you want more details I'll go back and edit it but I'll have to do it on my labtop so that way it'll be easier. If i get anything wrong let me know!
Honestly this song is beautiful, it's sad that the people who recorded this might have considered their music career a failure and just moved on with their lives
Reminds me of Tally Hall. The band disbanded due to their lack of popularity, yet a few years later, one of their songs became popular for being a meme
I agree, sure this song is mysterious, but it's still beautiful, maybe that's why people are so invested in it and others are trying to figure it out and learn about it's history. If it wasn't beautiful, would people really care so much? I doubt it.
It's definitely fire, but for some reason whenever I hear it I feel like I'm being watched. Probably would not feel like that with a higher quality version though
imagine an SCP which is a song from an alternate universe that makes references to historical events that never happened, which aired on the radio only once and has gained a cult following on the internet of people trying to find its origin, but due to its nature as an art piece, everyone who hears it assumes the events are fictional and thus it's inherently safe-class
How much stuff was written and recorded in someone's basement that is actually really good, but we'll never hear it because the artist never showed it to anyone other than friends or they never got noticed outside of a small fan following? It's sad to think your art could die with you.
I just want to thank the Lostwave community for finding this ~40 year mystery, and for helping songs like this to be found. Glad my favorite Lostwave song was found 🎉 thank you everyone!
This needs to be played in a major Hollywood movie, or in a TV show. Playing chicken with the German copyright system on that level would probably get us an answer pretty quick.
From 1978 to 1985 I was an active musician in the Hamburg scene. My bands were the Roundheads, No Dance Project, XoX and First Affair and I did some other solo things . I have heard and known many unknown bands from northern Germany. During his time at the NDR in Hamburg, there was an annual competition for musicians, the HÖRFEST. Almost 1000 bands applied for this competition every year. NDR has also released vinyl albums of the winners of this competition. This song is not to be found there. One of the most important music editor at NDR at that time was Peter Urban, today he is editor-in-chief of the music editors. He might know something. I've listened to the song many times and I always come back to a band that doesn't really sound like that with their successful albums from the backup and the vocal voice. But the way of writing a song, the harmonic structure, something in the sound of the voice reminds me of the band Alphaville. My feeling tells me that it could be a very early demo of this band, in which the singer does not yet dare to approach his tonal possibilities. From the temporal classification it would also fit. I can understand that the band no longer stands for this old demo, if it really came from them. Because it could damage their image a bit. Thing of it! Peter
I think this song is a fake. Something is off about it. Could be the guy that has the tape recorded it. It's his voice. I'm not saying it cant be real. But the lyrics and everything feels like it's way too generic to know who sang it. The song is way too clear for a tape recording. I dont know its wierd. Although its catchy I still feel it's fake.
It might be that this was a group from east of the wall, and might therefore not have wanted their names put on it, since this was before the somewhat problematic unification of Germany was a real thing. It's just a thought.
Just keep spreading this song! In 5 years, after reaching the 20 millon views, some grumpy old german will start ranting about how young people are stealing a song he made decades ago and the mistery will be solved... and somebody will finally be able to put a copyright strike on it
In another universe, people FEX-roll each other, by sending misleading links to this song. At the same time, there is a Rebbit (yes, not Reddit) community actively looking for that mysterious "We're No Strangers To Love" song possibly from the 80's
When the internet dies, this song will be in the credits.

Sounds crazy, but it's definitely possible
@@yrly59e Maybe it was a national production that was kind of popular around those years but it never really got popular out of Germany and since in Germany they're very into national stuff of course they would play a song from a movie from their country.

(Different speed, different lyrics, etc.)
So this definitely makes the search much more difficult.
She also added: if the lyrics are copyrighted, people should contact copyright offices about the song, rather than djs/stations.

Its all in the cloud, everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

it genuinely scares me how people can find full versions of songs yet people still cant recognise where the song originates
Canditate: fuck off
*"i dont know, why dont you guess it?"*
And then someone guesses correctly

Subways of your mind - FEX
There's good reasons to believe that they are the ones who made this song. A user found an article talking about a band called FEX who won a talent contest in Bremen in Sep 1984 and that their music was described as rock with wave and pop influence. The article mentioned the people who were part of the band and the user said that he recognized one of them from a Horfest 83 band called Phret. The user got in touch with him and asked if he could send some of the songs they made. He did and the songs he send were;
Heart in Danger
Talking Hands
Sunways of your Mind.

I just want to thank the Lostwave community for finding this ~40 year mystery, and for helping songs like this to be found. Glad my favorite Lostwave song was found 🎉 thank you everyone!

This is honestly fascinating to watch the amount of people grow who are trying to find who these guys are

this 5 year old comment hits harder now that the song’s been found
This needs to be played in a major Hollywood movie, or in a TV show. Playing chicken with the German copyright system on that level would probably get us an answer pretty quick.
what a great idea tbh
You know what?
Let’s make that happen.
I'll do it for free
This is probably an obscure garage band so i doubt that would work
@@danielcarneiro5483 Eh, anything would be worth a shot at this point.
@@bourbon646 The song is not a fake because it exist, it was composed and recorded by whoever.
It would appear this song was recorded as a demo by Christian Brandl from the austrian band Chuzpe, together with some friends.

It might be that this was a group from east of the wall, and might therefore not have wanted their names put on it, since this was before the somewhat problematic unification of Germany was a real thing. It's just a thought.
GLAD TO BE PART OF INTERNET HISTORY ONCE MORE :DDDDDD
Just keep spreading this song!
In 5 years, after reaching the 20 millon views, some grumpy old german will start ranting about how young people are stealing a song he made decades ago and the mistery will be solved...
and somebody will finally be able to put a copyright strike on it
The only time we want someone's video to get a copyright strike.
@@IamaDinosaur No way you found it... sounds the same....
DAMN you nailed it with the 5 years prediction
Why do I feel like this song is part of the soundtrack of a movie I've never seen? Why the hell do I have such a strong feeling about that?!

It's in English but with a russian accent
Well yeah that's exactly how this was found in the first place
In another universe, people FEX-roll each other, by sending misleading links to this song.
At the same time, there is a Rebbit (yes, not Reddit) community actively looking for that mysterious "We're No Strangers To Love" song possibly from the 80's
It sounds like it’s from an 80s coming of age movie
