Programming and Modeling are some of the most prolific industries in the world right now, and you don’t pick game design, notorious for its difficulty for how much you’re paid, by accident. Most of the dudes responsible for making these games really like games, they just aren’t actually in charge of their design. They carry out orders from above, and the game ends up as it does because someone who really doesn’t care is calling the shots for someone who doesn’t even really understand games in the first place.
In that context, it’s kind of a miracle the games like these ever come out at all.

@@Fresch_K What fantastic RPG's? The last fantastic RPG I remember playing was Baldur's Gate 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance before that, Yakuza 0 before that, The Witcher 3 before that, Fallout New Vegas before that, Dragon Age Origins before that, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines before that, Deus Ex before that, Chrono Trigger before that, didn't game much before that.
Kingdom Come Deliverance was particularly awesome as it felt like the events in that could have actually happened, New Vegas had the best freedom of personal agency and excellent writing, Witcher 3 aged like a fine wine, Bloodlines had an amazing setting and writing, Dragon Age had a very fleshed-out world, etc.
I haven't kept up with modern games much but Spider-Man 2 was AWFUL and the new God of War wasn't much better. To be frank, other than Baldur's Gate 3 giving me some hope for the future of gaming nothing else really has as that game has as much attention to detail as you can possibly fit into one title and was clearly a labor of love.
But for as good as Baldur's Gate 3 was Spider-Man 2 was so fucking terrible that it even made the first game on the PS4 look decent and the amount of padding and cutscenes in it made it feel like TLOU with superhero's and God of War Ragnarok was even worse, they both were so bad that I couldn't even bring myself to finish them and this is coming from a person who thinks that God of War 1 and 2 are masterpieces that were way ahead of their time on release.

Not only this: Starfield is one of the worst game ever.
I mean, it took eight years to renam Death Claws into Terror Morphs and Dragonborn into Starborn?
It's all so boring, even the "villains" of the Crimson Fleet. An organization whose sole motivation - for decades - has been to steal a bag of gold? Who wrote that? A twelve year old boy? When I watch Cyberpunk, every single dialogue with Johnny Silverhand is more badass and deeper than anything Starfield has to offer.
And then the logic holes, for example the Hearts of Mars "quest":
Adventurers have been disappearing in search of the item for decades. Turns out it's three hundred meters away, in an absolutely empty cave. Bethesda clearly didn't want to make any effort.

    • @Standgedicht

Another problem is the lack of staging.
Saw a video yesterday where someone showed the scene on Neon where I'm traveling with Stroud to buy the artifact from a gangster. This was compared to the scene from Cyberpunk where I go to Maelstrom with Jacky to get the Flathead.
It seems like a Christian Bale film versus puppet theater.
The worst thing is that it makes no difference which dialogue option I choose. Bethesda's so-called quest always ends the same.

People hoard in skyrim because there's cool items that make you feel super cool and chosen. They explore in spite of the repetitive gameplay loop because places are interesting and have shiny loot. The story and characters are barely a framework but when you've got a shiny sword and those auroras floating overhead it's easy to lose yourself in the roleplay and make the characters and gameplay better than bethesda ever could. Playing through 2077 right now, and damn if that game doesn't do EVERYTHING to present good reasons for things, interweave group interests in missions, give characters their own body language, utilize gestures and micro-expressions, produce pressure during confrontations etc., etc.
Like, when talking to Dex at the Afterlife, T-Bug sits in a super peculiar, deliberate way. She stretches and moves like someone who doesn't get to move in her job and never has IRL customer contact. Judy and Evelyn talking are so blatantly concerned about each other and speak in a manner that strongly suggests their history, but never states it when you meet them.
The game has you move, crawl, stand, sit etc. in ways specific to the situation all the time.
Everything about the world, the story, the people makes so much sense. I have a fight with Johnny Silverhand while crawling over my apartment floor, noticeably barely conscious. I have discussions with several people who get carefully framed to stand and walk naturally in my field of view. People touch me, get in my face, punch and jostle me, stand up mid-conversation because they get distracted... And then Starfield does the Oblivion snap-to-dialogue chamera zoom. To deliver a story where only the player actually acts.

You know, the setting is not even bad. Very good backdrop for space opera. What makes this awful is that we can look at games that came 10-15 years prior like Mass Effect trilogy that has that character recruitment, daddy problems, mysterious stuff, visions from artifact, different style places and cities... and basically most of the intelligent aliens are just humans that look different. And more daddy problems. Why take any direction from this approach.
Then there are franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek that have fleshed out worlds and plenty of fan fiction around them. Bethesda could have gone to some forums and mix and mash these fanfic things and use it in creative ways.
But no, Bethesda decided to do something new, but apparently was out of ideas because the end result is bland, characters are colourless and tasteless, the plot has no internal logic whatsoever.
What I suspect is that once again Bethesda relies on modders to overhaul this trainwreck. Basically fan fiction will be the way for this game anyway, just that Bethesda couldn't be bothered to even copy the fan fiction themselves.

Rather that using the scripture about two people fighting for something like 4 solar years and 140 days to pinpoint a planet based on it's solar year and rotation, they decided to say it was its GPS coordinates.
For context our latitude and longitude was decided by the man who invented it. That is why 0 longitude goes through Greenwich England.

The lore is fantastic but BGS is squandering the potential.

You could just walk around from city to city have interesting stuff happen. In Starfield I just felt like I was fast traveling to different map markers and running through cities to markers. I never felt that sense of wondering what's around the next corner. I was just checking things off my quest list.

This ship should've been a reward for completing the quest and joining the Constellation itself, as perhaps all recruits could have their own ships, and you'd have to work for it a little.
I don't understand why Starfield is so affraid to, at first, constrain the player to New Atlantis and let them uncover layers of the constellation itself and how it operates.
It would've been so rewarding having Sarah say "So Barrett tested you? You can control the ship well then? Alright. It's time for you to earn the right to fly it without our guidance!".

If you want to stay in the original universe do that. If you want you can stop and make any of them your permanent universe. Its a unique way of having new game + . Also I love the game. @@solidsnake3962 Well I don’t think it is stupid but maybe I am or just sound more harsh than I truly am.
In any case, I realize that people love the game. I myself clocked 115 hours. If I did, it’s because I care. If I commented, it was because talking about it is interesting, either for criticizing, sharing experiences, discussing the game or just finding someone that can make my view shift and appreciate the game better.
Still, loving something doesn't make it good. I am guilty of loving some mid or down right bad stuff. Your love for something can’t serve as an argument for anything except to justify your own enjoyment and certainly not deter anyone from talking about what they think is failure. Especially because talking about it might make more known an issue that if corrected might improve the experience of a future BGS game for everyone. In short, just pointing out mistakes so that they’re not made again.
As for the new game plus in Starfield, I think either you misunderstood or I didn’t made myself clear. The problem is not its existence in itself but the way it presents itself. Then again, as a function, it doesn’t provide a way to do over your traits or your background which limits its own utility over a new file. As for experiencing different choices, it is not obvious from a first playthrough that early decisions have far reaching consequences so it isn't as good as an alternative it could be to just making a choice and reloading to see both sides.
To my first point about the clashing narrative and your response, refusing the unity is not something the game considers as an end. You can, but it just puts the quest on hold. So refusing to engage with it just makes you refuse to engage a part of the game that seems integral. It is the end goal of the main quest. All you did was to arrive before the unity and jump. Everything seems to point that way and even your companions go for the unity. The game has a world that wants you to invest time in while the main quest wants you to ditch it all not for a do over but for a continuation as a starborn while the rest stays behind, unreachable. Mechanically, it’s an in universe new game plus but narratively, it’s the certainty for your character to become a bored immortal space traveler just like the hunter and emissary. And while this is an interesting idea, the game doesn’t explore it in the new game. Unless you count yourself becoming more bored with the game with each new game plus which to be fair, would be an interesting commentary if it was the intention.
Sorry I know, it's too long but hey, as said before, talking about this game is interesting !

I do it all over. There’s going to be people that play the game for 100’s of hours and for years who will have never started new game +. Now all that being said I’ve played for 50 hours and haven’t gotten near the end. I’m not really going to make any outposts but I want to do as much of the game as I can before beating it. bad story, bad characters, bad gameplay, bad game. Bethesda aren't the same studio they used to be 10-15 years ago. Seems like a bad investment by Microsoft tbh.
