- This is a tutorial on how to build a kitchen island with a fake shiplap look, Or maybe it’s Nickel Gap? Either way, I will show you how to build this island and walk you through the process step by step. This is a very easy build and I do not use complicated tools to build it. If you have basic tools, and basic skills, you can build this piece, and I will help you! The kitchen island is very simple and is based on a farmhouse style. The base is 2’x6’. With a 3x6’ butcher block, it will be a 3x6’ island with a 36” height.

We made this last weekend. It was my husbands first big project and we love the end result.
Awesome! Thanks for the comment! I’d love to see your pics in the “Handmade DIY Projects” group on Facebook.
You have really inspired my wife to get rid of a kitchen table I just purchased and build a kitchen island. Wish me luck 🍀!!!
Good luck! Have fun!
Terrific design aesthetic, it makes a really handsome and practical Island.
Thanks!
Great video.
Thank you!
That looks really great Josh, nice!
Thanks David!
Excellent video! I've been planning on building an island for a while. I think your plans are easily adaptable and your instruction are clear enough to help out on any design for an island. Thanks for posting!
Awesome! You’re welcome! If you don’t mind, join my “Handmade DIY Projects” Facebook page and share the pictures when your done. I’d love to see them!
I like the idea to give it the look of real shiplap.
Thanks! Probably my wife’s idea. Lol
DIY MAN believe me I know.
😂
My husband will try to make this ❤️
Great job! Looks really really good! Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Your welcome!
FANTASTIC! Thanks~
You’re welcome!
Enjoyed the video! Nice build
Awesome! Thanks!
My first thought was to put our cast iron skillets/pans on that shelf. Would you consider a cleat/ledger/support on the underside of the back of the shelf?
You made this project look effortless!!! My 66 year old legs and back were impressed!!! Good on ya!!
It might be a good idea. It’s pretty stiff how it is though. Thanks!
@@DIYMAN I liked it so much, I immediately thought of ways we would use it...heavy cookware like Le Creuset and other iron items came to mind. THEN, I remembered how heavy they are! Maybe just a 1x ledger along the back of the shelf to ease my mind :)
Awesome. I could see that working.
Really looks sharp Josh! Great job!
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Looks Great!
Thank you!
Nice work! Not difficult to build and easy on the pocket!
Thank you! It was a very affordable project. The butcher block was the most expensive part
@@DIYMAN I need to find a vid of a "skirt" or band being put on a butcher block top. I want to put ours ON the existing stone top, so we could remove it in the future. I have little desire to remove the ~200# stone !! The skirt would hide the fact that it's on top of another top and I would be happy with the slight increase in height.
I’ve actually given something like this some thought for a kitchen table idea I had. You could drill holes in some steel strapping, countersink the holes, and use screws with a beveled head. Fill the screw heads with “bondo” (auto-body filler), and paint the strapping black.
Looks amazing, awesome job
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I love, love, love this! Thing is I need it smaller. At least 2ft shorter length wise. I have a smaller kitchen. Would I just deduct 2 ft from the longer boards? I havent a clue. 😉. Thank you for any help you can give me.
Thank you! Yes, that should work! Any boards that run lengthwise, I would just subtract 24” from the measurement.
You know your’e getting old when you watch a DIY video and think “oh man, that concrete must have really hurt his knees.”
😂
Can I use a stone countertop with this?
Yes. I’m going to on my next house
How could I add a sink and dishwasher?
The dishwasher would just be a 24” cutout that goes straight to the floor and for a sink, I like to make a 36” type cabinet with fake drawers up top and no shelves below
Would you be able to give me the cut list for an island just like the one you made but with a base of 1 1/2 foot by 5 foot with a butcher block top of 5 feet by 2 1/2 feet please?
I really wish I had the brain bites to do that, I’m afraid I would mess up the numbers for you if I did that, I have to take things one step at a time to come up with a lot of these measurements for these videos. Sorry
Great build. Did you anchor the island to the floor? If so, how did you do so?
Thank you! Yes I did. It was heavy enough that I really don’t think it needed it, but I sent some concrete screws into the slab at an angle just in case.
@@DIYMAN awesome!! thanks!!
No problem!
Bro., I really liked the rat killing video! lol jk But more Bigfoot stuff, please! lol
Lol. I’d like to start making some fun videos very soon. Maybe Bigfoot will be a part of those. 🤫
Where is the material list for this project would love to build this.
Check out the description on the video. The list should be down there
About how much did this cost you to make?
I think it was around $150 not counting the top
Gosh I wish you lived by me I can't find anyone to make my island in my kitchen
I’d love to build another one
Price for everything
The top was the most expensive part. I think that cost around $200 and the island cost about $150 or so
Breaded hair style
Looks awesome ... and I hate people that say stuff like this .... but please don't use a table saw on the ground.....you are giving me heart palpitations.
I appreciate that! And I’m done on the ground. That is no fun
