- Is it Shiplap or Ship Lap? In this video I am going to be demonstrating how to install Shiplap on a Kitchen Island. This technique can be used on any flat surface. The total cost for this project was about $100.00 and took a couple of hours.
First, I installed the lower rails, and then the vertical stiles. These were made up of 1” x 6” primed trim boards. There was not a top rail, because it’s under a countertop. But if the top edge is visible, you would want to install a top rail. They were mitered and installed with 23-gauge pin nails. You can use a 18-gauge brad nails for this step as well.
Secondly, I installed the field boards which were a nickel reveal ship lap board. I used construction adhesive and 23-gauge headless pin nails to secure. In hindsight, I probably could have gotten away without using the pin nails for this step.
The third step, was to install a shoe molding. While this is not necessary, it really “dresses-up” the installation. This was install with construction adhesive (An unnecessary step, but requested by the client, to keep their toddler from tearing it off), and then 23-gauge pin nails.
Finally, I cleaned up all the seams with a DAP painters caulk.. I don’t paint, I left that up to the homeowner, who will be painting it a bright white semigloss latex to match the cabinets and trim in the kitchen.

I am doing this tomorrow. 2 base cabinets, a acacia top and shiplap. But I am putting it on small 2” legs to be moved around.

Any tips for doing the corner vertical trim boards?
The easiest way is to butt them up by making one board a little narrower so the reveal is equal, or you can miter the corners.
I see you don't have anything supporting the overhang for the top. Is this an issue? I'll be doubling up some mdf and using epoxy but I was thinking of installing some supports
The island was preexisting. I thing the countertop is self supporting and brackets or corbels would be purely decorative.
Nice work! Probably a lame question, did you rent those tools(the circular saw, table for the saw, nail gun etc) or you bought all of them outright? I wanted to try something like this for my house and wanted to know guidance if it makes sense to buy those tools or rent them.
I own all my tools. The Ryobi brand is very affordable.

Quick question on the rail cut, did you to a 45 degree angle?
Yes, I mitered the outside corners of the stiles (vertical) and baseboard on the tablesaw. The rails (horizontal) are butted to the stiles
If I’m covering a tile covered island. Should I put up like 1/2” plywood first? Or just glue the shiplap to the tiles? Don’t want to bust the tiles off.
Just glue it to the tile. I used the brad nails to hold it in place until the glue dried, and I probably didn't even need that.
What size rails did you use? It looks like Home Depot has 5 1/4 and 7 1/4.

Hi just wondering why it wasnt nailed through the tongue? Concern about splitting?
I could have nailed through the top tough, at the time my though process was to secure it down until the adhesive cured. In hindsight, I probably could have installed all of the shiplap with just adhesive on this install..
Did you use a router to make the groove for the end piece and if so what's bit did you use?

Nope. It's called Nickel Gap Ship Lap. On the rack at Home Depot and Lowes.

I'm sorry yes I know what ship lap it is I'm talking about the piece that you cut out of the vertical end piece to fit flush w cabinet

Nope. Butt Joint.
What did you use for the very top strip?
I just ripped a piece down to fit the space.
What size nails did you use for the shiplap
23 gauge headless pin nails. Just to hold it until the glue dries.

You are welcome. On a wall I would recommend an 18 Guage Brad nail into the studs.

Short Pin Nails and toe-nailed into the trim boards.

I used the shortest pin nails and only in the corners where there was structure. Honestly you can probably get away with the adhesive only...
