I recall in 1976, there were three men who shared a vacation home near ours. In June of 1976, we came up to the lake for the summer and were shocked to see Karl’s condition. He used to be a bit on the chubby side, but had taken up weight lifting and looked great a year earlier. Now he was almost emaciated, needed help walking, and Todd and Jimmy had to carry him to a chaise lounge to lay in the sun. Our family assumed he had cancer. His friends didn’t offer any information, so we didn’t ask. By August, he no longer went out. In September, back home, we received a call from a lady who was a year round resident that Karl had passed away. We all assumed he’d passed of cancer. Nobody heard of AIDS in 1976, but people, mainly gay men, were already getting sick and dying. It took another few years for doctors to link the deaths together.

It's hard listening to the doctor's in the mid-80s theorizing that not all people with HIV (HTLVIII) infection would eventually develop AIDS. The worst-case scenario turned out to be true.
When people say, "but why did they keep having sex?" This is why. He literally says it will not kill the vast majority of people, they won't even know they've had it -
It's so sad. Also the doctor explained in great detail how women can catch it because vaginal tissue is more easy to break and can absorb semen, and penis skin is tougher so less likely to catch it, yet NO mention of how obviously anal sex is probably the biggest sexually transmitted risk factor. It's graphic and medical and well known to be transmitted amongst the gay community yet they don't even mention it!

Yeah, it fell to the background as soon as people found out a way to suppress the virus. I’m just hoping that it doesn’t mutate again and the drugs that we developed to treat it no longer have any effect.
Unfortunately, from the 1960s through the early 1970s, was the time period when communities in major cities (i.e. San Francisco, New York City, etc) in the United States, started HIV serio-convertions due to MSM unprotected anal sex or IV drug use. If you do the math, the first group cases of AIDS was documented in the late 1970s (1977-1979) through the early 1980s (1980-1983). The incubation from intial HIV exposure without PEP to HIV infection, and years without taking HIV medications to the progress to AIDS is 10 to 15 years. So, unfortunately for those first large clusters of AIDS cases in the early 1980s, actually serio-converted HIV positive in the early 1970s. Essentially those who walked into age of free sex in 1970s was walking into death trap, without even knowing it. The "party" was over before it started. Although, Robert Raymond (African-American Missouri teenager) was the victim of first confirmed case of HIV/AIDS in North America, who died on May 15, 1969 at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri, there were also two unusual deaths which doctors later reported in New York ( as well in the U.K), in 1959. Also, an additional case in the U.K. (David Carr) was believed to be HIV positive. There is also a theory that the 1959 oral polio vaccination test by Hilary Korprowski in Africa (Congo and Lake Victoria region) may have accidentally cros contaminated with HIV. In fact, there were conference records, research papers, and even a quote from another scientist warning in 1959 that Koprowski' oral polio vaccine was contaminated with an "unknown monkey virus". HIV-1 possibly crossed over to humans around 1908, at the time the Congo was a Belgian colony with devastating human rights abuses, and possibly some of the people of Congo engaging in the use of chimpanzee bushmeat. Fast forward to the late 1970s, Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona, spent years tracking down blood samples taken prior to the key year of *1981* , the start of the HIV epidemic in North America, and tracked down pror-1981 blood samples. He found that those samples contaminated signs of HIV-1. He and his colleagues stumbled upon two Hepatitis B virus studies from *1978 to 1979* , with one sample in New York and one sample in San Francisco, collected from gay men, which those samples were found to be positive for HIV-1. The virus that started the HIV epidemic in the United States may have moved from the Caribbean to the United States in the 1960s.
Yes indeed. It was in NYC in 1970, in Haiti in the '60s and the Congo way back in the early 20th Century. IV drug addicts in the U.S. were actually thought to be the REAL first affected population, but they were homeless street-dwellers dying of "the dwindles" and "junkie pneumonia" & often non-white so nobody noticed or cared. Haiti's filthy blood donation practices--and the U.S's non-existent hygiene standards regarding blood donations (which still exist today)--allowed it to enter this country through the blood supply during Papa Doc's Duvalier's heyday. Serial passage via reused syringes definitely could've helped it jump species and transform from the relatively harmless SIV to HIV in S. Africa's early vaccine campaigns :(
HIV was probably in the human system for as long as humans existed but what is unequivocal is the fact that the sexual revolution of the late 1960s in America, coupled with the lifestyle of gay men, created the HIV epidemic in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Other theories are actually baseless
Yes but it wasn’t just MSM or IV drug users, infected blood or blood products unknowingly this hiv infected blood products spread out to all over the world by medical professionals(no one knows at that time ) I question Robert Raymond case. some people saying his hiv was not early type but 1980s type. his grand father had similar symptoms too
Robert Rayford was the young man's name. Very sad story, but they all are😢 He had such unusual symptoms that his Dr's couldn't piece together that they saved some samples to be later tested. He didn't talk much and refused certain physical exams. During autopsy KS lesions were discovered, but of course, those implications were unknown at the time. I remember something about Hurricane Katrina ruining the last of his samples, but they were already tested positive in '87. It's thought that his Grandfather infected him having died a couple years earlier. His Grandma died less than a year later.
I can never forget the fear, two homosexual brothers. I know how afraid I was. I cannot even imagine what they went thru, the testing the waiting for results. Thank God they are ok. They were very very very lucky. I would have lost my damn mind if they had gotten sick.
I'd lay money down the priest at 20:42 is gay.I'm curious to any gay male reading this, what is it about so many gay men that causes them to all of a sudden develop/begin talking with such a feminine voice after having talked so masculine years earlier?? Just curious...
My daughter has a friend who speaks with two voices. He says that his deeper one is for his parents home and for work and one that he had to practice. His "gay voice" comes easier to him and he tries to hide it.
I still cannot understand why people didn't resort to safe sex in the face of the onslaught of the epidemic in the first part of the eighties. Huge mistake and just baffling.
The incubation period can be several years and life expectancy without treatment can be 10 years from initial infection. So many people who died in the 80s had it before anyone knew about it. The year with the most deaths was 1994 but many of those people would have caught it in the very early days.
You are totally right. Still, a lot of people got infected in the years 82 -85 and there was some sort of denial ( mixed with fear) which occurs in every epidemic to be honest.I was born in Africa, Brazzaville and HIV had been lurking for years when I was living my childhood, I could have got it through transfusion after a serious accident...then at 15 on holidays in France in 1981 I first heard it from cases in LA....first red light for me .
A number of reasons. Firstly, it took a long time to actually identify what was causing the disease. The virus wasn't actually identified until the mid 80s, and even then, there was still a lot of debate about whether it was actually causing AIDS. There were all kinds of rival theories going about, including that it was caused by taking certain recreational drugs. Secondly, if you listen to interviews at the time, a lot of people were in total denial. Some people would say that you could tell who had HIV and who hadn't just been looking at them. A lot of straight people in particular thought that they wouldn't get it because it had been labelled a gay disease. Politics also played a role. That whole period in the 70s had seen gay men being freed from persecution for the first time ever. It was like taking the lid off a pressure cooker and a lot started to make up for lost time sexually. Others viewed it as a kind of defiance against the people who had oppressed them all their lives. Also, with any community that's been deeply oppressed all their lives, there were a number with mental health issues - sex was an addiction for a small minority because it was the only time in their lives they'd ever felt wanted. That all has to be set against the social changes in the 60s and 70s that rebelled against the old Victorian values. Sex in both the gay and straight communities became viewed as an expression of freedom and liberation from oppression. Pretty much every young person, straight or gay, began to have the possibility to start having more sex. This was reinforced by the development of antibiotics that could treat most sexually transmitted diseases. It suddenly seemed like you could have as much sex as you wanted, with no risk of disease. A number of people found that difficult to give up.
I still don’t understand how supposedly the first contamination from the chimpanzee to the human occurred in the 1920’s in Cameroon , the disease seemed to be contained and not that widespread in Central Africa, then when it left Africa with these Haitian workers then contaminated Americans, the disease became a pandemic then came back even stronger in Africa while their behaviors in the 70’s or 80’s were not that different, so what made something that seemed to be contained in Central Africa, once it left Congo came back stronger in Congo and by extension Africa ?
