    This movie broke my heart. I feel like it should have shown how Einar felt he was a woman before they dressed him up. Sometimes I find it strange when Trans people have different personalities. Like Einar was in love with Gerda at the beginning but then once he dresses up he doesn't want her anymore. Or Lili doesn't want her anymore. The Trans people I know are the same person whether living as male or female and have the same interests and emotions.

    • @TYCOIX
      @TYCOIX 6 років тому

      Shannon Levy I would say that rather than different personalities, they've separated aspects of themselves into two separate entities. People handle things different, and the same goes for gender dysphoria.

    Alicia Vikander was imo the star of this movie. She was just awesome in her emotional range and made the movie.She is a rising star and will be a big box office star. Eddie was very good, but his character was very limited.

      That's accurate

    • @brajeshsingh2391
      @brajeshsingh2391 4 роки тому

      @@marioy5914 not at all. I have seen the movie in parts and Alicia Vikander spoiled the movie. I am not saying she is a bad actress but there was just too much focus on her which distorted the narrative. You are right in observing that Vikander had the dominant screen time for what it seemed which is a surprise because movie is based on Eddie's character. And he gave a very good performance. It is very hard for a man to play a woman on screen but the grace and femininity he portrayed was remarkable. had this movie been a better movie and not concentrated as much on Vikander it would have been difficult for Leonardo to win his maiden Oscar. Man to man Eddie had the more challenging role but Leo's performance came up better because he was in the better movie. Vikander is a good actress, quite natural and appealing. As far a big box office star well it would be interesting to see what kind of roles she selects. Sometimes having too much of talent or appeal can be a drawback and it seems Vikander suffers from that.

    What exactly makes a movie Oscar bait? Every time I hear somebody call a movie Oscar bait, it just ends up being a pretty good movie.

    CAREFUL, PLEASE, SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT.
    So The Danish Girl has just came out in my country, and I had *really high* expectations for it since I loved the trailer. Sadly, I'm quite disappointed. I feel it was a great story that has been presented in a wrong way. It was supposed to be Lili's story, but I honestly felt more sympathy towards Gerda than I did with her. It is not, and I insist, it is *not* Eddie Redmayne's fault, I loved the way he portrays Lili, I just didn't get to see enough of her personality to feel a strong connection with the character, before and after her journey. I feel like the script didn't made a true effort in mirroring the nightmare that was being part of the transgender community back then, they spent more time digging in their marriage drama (which I understand is a big part of the story, but, come on) than actually diving inside of the 1920's way of thinking. They basically sum up her visits to the doctors in like, five minutes, then beat her up and, yeah, that's all. And it really isn't, it was just much more than that, and the film was not able of showing it with accuracy. We don't get to see Lili's feelings in a direct way because everything is a complete mess. The way everything takes place feels rushed, and because of this we can't have not one glimpse of the long and tough journey of hard choices and difficult times through the multiple steps that a transgender person experiences. Yes, it's true that Lili is constantly suffering, but they focus so so much on the technical and physical stuff that at the end of the movie you do not feel like you know this woman, because they don't construct a deep personality for her, at any point! And also, the ending. Actual Lili Elbe married a man, and died at age 50, why did they feel the need to kill her out of the blue? I'm sick of the whole LGBT+ films and the unnecessary drama, like, can we just have a good film? one that actually portrays us wholly?
    Don't get me wrong, it was not bad, it was beautifully shot, the landscapes and the overall aesthetic of the movie was great. The acting was 10/10, amazing, truly; the script and the way the plot is presented, not so much, and it made me upset. So yeah, that's my opinion. The idea and story were beautiful, it just didn't move me the way it was meant to.

    I'm very interested in seeing this movie. I'm a huge appreciator of Tom Hooper's work (including JOHN ADAMS, THE KING'S SPEECH and LES MISÉRABLES)... and I also happen to be a trans-female. Although I am interested in seeing how the trans subject is addressed, mostly in regards to the period in which this story actually occurred, I can already tell that I'll likely most identify with Alicia Vikander's role. But it will be interesting to see if Eddie Redmayne can capture any of the nuances I've noticed in myself or friends of mine who have transitioned.
    I should also note that the first trailer for THE DANISH GIRL looked exquisite, while the second one made the movie look like it'd be substandard fare. I'll be able to speak more to those points after I've seen the movie, which I'm hoping will be in late December or early January.

    Hey, a German guy here.
    Christy´s pronunciation of Schoenarts (9:25) is close, but not entirely correct. I certainly dont mind and I wouldnt have mentioned it in the first place but she kinda asked if her pronunciation was correct and well it was not exactly, as I said, close tho.
    So, you pronounce the "Schoen" like an "ö" or Scandinavian ø if that helps. "schön" btw is the german word for pretty.
    I hope nobody gets me wrong, it was just FYI. Not trying to be a grammar nazi (or pronunciation nazi, for that matter)

    I admire and completely agree with your review of The Danish Girl. But unfortunately, you are completely off about Russell Crowe in Les Miserables. His voice is sadly not understood by many, especially considering Hooper's expectation of Javert's portrayal. Tom Hooper wanted something deep and stripped naked RAW, and that is what Crowe delivered. His role was eloquently portrayed, and I pity those who misunderstand the naturalism in his voice. Nevermind his brilliant acting...

    So... Eddie Redmayne plays a character who is successful and is married to a confidently willed woman. Eddie then goes through a physical change that takes a tole on their marriage and their relationship. During this difficult and stressful change, Eddie's wife finds comfort in a friend but she learns to accept and appreciate the person Eddie has become. In the end, Eddie becomes a recognized person of importance who made a strong impact to people even now.
    Did they just make The Theory of Everything again?

    the whole movie felt like a man's severe and tragic downward spiral into his mental illness that the movie was desperately trying to play off as some bizarre triumph. it was reminiscent of a "Beautiful Mind" another story of a man's mental breakdown but at least with that story there was a victory in the end as opposed to Redmayne's tragic end.

    I am a Trans woman & I was very offended by this review. Why are all of the anchors in this review referring to the trans character in this film as "he"? "HE knows who he is", "A GUY trying to become a girl". The Character is a woman & always was, despite the social constructs of society that forced her to live as a "man" simply based on the fact that she was born male. It is important that you all understand that the way you spoke of the Transgender woman portrayed in this film was highly ignorant, insensitive & with humor that was In very poor taste- I.e. "HE's the character who's getting HIS penis chopped off" & everyone around the table starts laughing. If you are going to discuss these types of issues, I would recommend that you educate yourself on real trans people & how to correctly address them. If I had any kind of pull or power at all I would ask for an apology from this channel/the people in thisVid who contributed their gender-normative 2 cents in such an inappropriate way.

    Feels really exploitative to make some Oscar bait where a man plays a woman so he can "transform" into a best actor winner. I'm not impressed with the use of this topic.
