Thanks. I have a 1976 Fleetwood with what looks to be clogged drain hoses. This video gives much better information than the Fisher Body Manual.
These visuals helped a lot in actually seeing how the drain system works.
Thanks!
You're welcome! That's what I like to hear. Thank you!
My mom had a new 1978 Eldorado Biarritz custom classic like that one it is a beautiful car I still have it in storage
Wow, that's awesome!
Damn, this is good information! I have a 75 Coupe DeVille with that exact moon roof in it, and it does that same thing like this one did, where it closes all the way, but won't rise up in the rear. You are the MAN for posting up this video!
Thank you very much for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already.
Thanks 👍 for showing the workings of the sunroof Tony. Love that Mercury you have in the garage! I bought my first new car in 1976, a Mustang in the cream and gold edition and my aunt and uncle had the Mercury Marquis and Tbird in the cream and gold also - Cool cars! Thanks again!
Thank you very much! That sure was a popular color combo back then.
in 1977, the astro roof listed 2777 !!! I have my window sticker from my 77, -- Ha, I bet mine is not draining and that is why the car has a stink - mildew, mold, - yea, I cleaned it once with lysol wipes and they did a great job, but I pick it up tormorrow.... we have had tons of rain lately....it's been sitting out, I bet. Good video, thank you !!!
Awesome! Thank you very much for the info. GM charged way more than Ford did. I guess that's why you see way more Lincoln's with them.
Thanks Tony! You know I love some early ASC power sunroof content. The early “inbuilt” units are easily identified by the front leading edge of the panel being straight across. The later “modular” units have a curved leading edge to mimic the front roof curve. For instance, look at a moonroof equipped 1977 78 Lincoln Versailles, and then look at a 1979 80 after the roof design was updated. Lincoln went from inbuilt to modular in 1979 (on Versailles only). I’ve had an interest in These units for years and have a parts collection to back that up. 😉. If you ever come across an early “inbuilt” steel panel unit, let me know! Thanks again for the great video. Excellent content. Mike
Thank you very much, Michael. I do know where there is a metel panel roof but don't remember the condition. I think it's in something like a 70s Cutlass/Monte Carlo style car. I know the yard but don't really remember the car. I'm gonna do a little more discussion on these.
Great video. Thanks for taking us along on this adventure. We never know what Tony has in store for us
You're welcome. Thank you buddy!
Tony, you video's are so very informative. Keep the good work up, their's no to many people like you out there working on these older lincolns and ford's. I've always had a thing for lincolns since i saw a 1967 continental convertible as a 12 year old and finally purchased one 8 years ago. I also have a 1972 Mark IV with a steel ASC moonroof roof that I had to take apart and replace the cables which was hard to find; I ended up finding them on a mercury cogar web site.
Also, I was reading an article about the first ASC sunroof was installed in a 1958 Ford Thunderbird, that was opened manually with a hand crank.
Thanks,
Joe
love your passion for Fords and Lincolns.
Thank you so much for the kind words, and thank you very much for watching! I love every car you mentioned!
Thanks for the update your a great guy
Thank you for watching!
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing this with us. I've worked on a couple of these but never got a good look at the mechanism.
You're welcome. Thank you!
Thank you.I should have took pictures before I removed moon roof.everything was common sense when I took it apart.
You're welcome. Thank you!
Thanks Tony. Very interesting. My MKV Cartier has a moon roof and also my Navy MKVI sedan. This is useful information.
You're welcome! Thank you very much for watching. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for the demo on removing the sunroof and for the instructions on how it was made and operates.
You're welcome. I'm hoping to do a little more on it.
There is a 78 Biarritz by me that is wrecked and I have a really nice 77 Eldorado with no astro roof. I wish I could take that out and put it in mine... if only I could be so lucky.
Someone can do it for you.
Wow she has a permanent sunroof now.
She sure does!
Another interesting video Tony. So today I went and pulled out headliner, seats rugs and such for a project I got going and noticed it’s got the keyless entry. Not sure what these Windstar keyless entries all work on but figured you woulda pulled it out for some project to be sure! Keep up the good work sir.
Thank you very much! I'm not sure about those keyless entry's either.
Maybe I can squeeze in some sun roof maintenance on my Taurus SHO before it gets too cold. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome!
👍👍👍👍👍
My Father and I removed, restored and refitted a steel ASC sunroof in our '73 Eldorado. Never seen the entire thing cut out of the car's roof. Remind me, the entire unit is held in with those small screws, but where the unit's sunroof shaped hole goes under the hole in the car's factory roof, they are spot welded? I need two separating but without cutting it out like you did.
The ASC sunroofs and a few custom jobs were done at the Reeck Road, Southgate plant about 15 miles from Cadillac's place. I know also that there was a mobile service by ASC, a dealer has a customer hot for a particular care but wants a sunroof. The car is question doesn't have a sunroof. The dealer could out the mobile ASC guy who'd visit the dealership (Cadillac) and fit a sunroof on site? They cost a little more for that service and some headlings were different in '78/'79 Sevilles.
Did you work with ASC? Paul
I did not work for ASC. Yes, it is all spot welded to the roof metal and no way to split it. You have to remove the glass and service it from the top. Thank you for all the info. It was a great company.
Thanks.@@tonyscarcare5657
I can remember when ASC was doing all the power moonroofs for the Detroit 3. They were such a wonderful company and did such high quality work. Tony i have a 1993 Buick Regal Gran Sport Sedan with the factory power moonroof. Option code CF5 i believe on the MSO tag on the spare tire cover. Was that an ASC moonroof on those cars do you recall? And if so can you service it from the top or do you have to take the whole assembly out of the vehicle to be serviced? At one point, when parked outside(I know that was a bad idea!) it started to leak into the passenger compartment because as you mentioned, i think, the drain holes in the back were clogged up. On my unit you can access all (4) drain holes/tubes when the moonroof is open so i was able to blow compressed air down each tube. I'm sacred to dump water on it to see if it still leaks since i have since had the entire headliner replaced. What am i to do??🤔
I'm sure it's not an ASC by that time. I think all three were using Wabesco units by that time. You can open it all the way and just dump cups of water in each corner and watch on the ground to see if it runs out. I don't think it can be serviced from the top.
@@tonyscarcare5657 what was the most confusing of the diagnosis was that whenever it did leak into the passenger compartment, when i tried to open it via the switch, it would NOT open. It was like whereever the water was pooling, was shorting out the switch and wouldn't let it operate. But when the rain would stop and it would dry out, the switch would work and the moonroof would operate as normal.
@@klwthe3rd now that's a strange one there!
GREAT video Tony thanks! Do you still have this sunroof assembly?
Thank you very much! I do still have it, but it's spoken for. I have a guy that comes around and buys every one of those I can get, and I don't have to mess with shipping them.
now I need to see a video of you restoring this Moon Roof and welding it in a car PLEASE
Now that I don't do!. I don't have the tools for it. I do know people that do, though.
Thanks for the lesson on sunroofs. It was also interesting, on how to remove it from a car by cutting it out. I have one silly question. What would happen it you took it all the way apart, and remove the cable to clean it?
That's not a silly question. This is one that it really needs to be done to.
That is a super rare 1978 Custom Classic. Only 425 were ever made. Kind of a waste to cut out the sunroof on a car that rare. Probably could have paid $300 for the whole thing and sold it for $5000 as a parts car to someone like me who owns one. Breaks my heart to see such reckless destruction to try and make a couple hundred bucks.
Look, pal! In the state of Illinois, it is against the law for a salvage yard to sell a vehicle "whole" once it has a salvage title. There is simply no way of reversing it once it's done. I have tried to buy complete cars from this junkyard in the past, and they will not hear of it! If I hadn't got the moonroof, someone else would have! I am far from retarded as you think I am! Also, this car was so completely rotten and rusty that you or no one else would have paid $5k for it! If you would have found it in "this junkyard" you'd got off of it whatever you could have because it's your only choice. The car was not for sale!
What's the point of preserving a car that's just going to be shredded into scrap metal after sitting for a few months?
I say get the parts off of it and allow them to keep another one of these on the road!
@YoshiMan38 exactly! The car was already in the junkyard with a salvage title. If I hadn't got it, someone else would have.
Thank you for posting this! I have a 2000 eldorado with an asc sunroof, not a factory one. It leaks water in the rear and if you push on the back the glass will go down. Even the dryers in the car wash are strong enough to pish the glass down and let water in. Do you know if they are set up the same as this 78? Going to try cleaning and lubing it like you did to see if i can get the back to pop up all the way
If it's an ASC, I'm sure it is designed the same way.
@tonyscarcare5657 thank you so much and thanks for the quick reply! Took the headliner down has a big Ole asc sticker on it
@jeffreyshepherd8488 you're welcome. They are by far the best ones.
Tony I probably would have cut that out too someone it always looking for early sunroof parts.
Yeah, if nothing else, the cables and motor are worth quite a bit.
Hi are all the biarritz molding still on the car from hood to the top thank you looking for them
I do believe all the trim was still on the car, but that was a long time ago, and I haven't been back down there. Sorry.
@@tonyscarcare5657 Oh ok my friend I was looking for the front two spears and or all the trim molding if you come across them please let me know EBay people are crazy with numbers but thank you
Do you still have extra sunroof switch for sale? I have a 77
No, I'm sorry, I do not.
Great video. I have a 78 Coupe deVille and has this exact astroroof (term used by Cadillac) and it works good but one of the rear tabs, I forgot what you called it in your video, doesn't raise one side of the glass (driver side) upon further inspection that tab is broken. I believe this is also the cause for the astroroof not to close evenly. Once side pulls more than the other as I can push one side forward to close. Would you happen to know if this piece alone is available 🤔 much thanks. Hope to hear from you *edit* you call it a nylon cam at about the 22:50 mark
Thank you for watching. No, I don't know if any of those are offered for sale anywhere now. I do not want to remove one from this particular roof. I can tell one they are all the same from those years of ASC roofs whether they were in Lincoln, Cadillac, Chrysler and all. So I'd think you could find one.
@Tony's Car Care no problem. I watched it in its entirety. I removed my halo trim and now I can't get it to go back on. Lol. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong to get it back in. So left it off. Anyhow, there isn't much in the local yards here to scour for parts or online. :( is this one for sale?
@edgarherrera5085 I did offer it to a guy for $350.00, and he said he was buying it but never got back to me. I may wind up having to sell it as parts, meaning motor, cables, and such. Those items are worth a lot. I'm not sure how I could ship the whole thing.
@Tony's Car Care the only way I think of to ship it, is to have it crated and box up and shipped via freight. And have insurance on it because of the glass. If you do decide to part out, I'll take that piece I need. Not sure if it's a single small piece or whether it's attached to the cable on the driver side. Wish h I could send a pic to you to show the part.
@@edgarherrera5085 I know the part you're talking about. I don't remember how it's attached.
Is this moonroof for sale??
It's already been sold. Sorry.
Have you sold this ?
Yes I have.
It looks like the glass is delaminating . I’m guessing it’s tempered glass and no longer available.
You are correct!
How much for the hood.
I didn't get the hood. I'm sure it's still there in the junkyard. I'm not sure what they charge for a hood.
Are you selling sunroof
It's already spoken for. Sorry.
