To any non-guitarists, learning, awesome and even advanced guitarists- know that what his tone, mode-changes usage, jazz theory, (the hardest in my and everyone's opinion😂) using these different modalities whilst still keeping a beautiful melody and MOST IMPORTANTLY HIS HANDS- WHERE IT ALL COMES FROM... is completely next-level
Omg, he´s so awesome. His style is at least for me extreme unexpected and way more creative and complex than my brain could handle in the first couple of listenings.
If you ever get a chance to take one of Julian’s master classes do it! I’ve taken a couple online and they are worth every minute in gold! He broke down All the Things You Are in one of his classes and explained some of his techniques. He had some guest students on , and was so kind and gracious to everyone. I rewatched it several times, but unfortunately they are not available at this time anymore to my knowledge. I really hope to take a master class in person when he offers them to various places he tours. What a gift to the world and truly remarkable!!
How is he always smiling. I love it and it makes me smile, but I don't understand how you can play something this complex and smile all the way through it!?
@@charlescarlson1267 it's a Ron Ellis pick called Ellisonic I believe. I'm pretty sure Ron created the pickup specifically for Julian so it's called the JL.
His dynamics are akin anime characters being op (in a good way). Like every time I see a video of him playing it’s like hearing the ultra instinct theme and I am in awe of his control over the instrument
Some time ago me and my 11 yo son listened to Julian Lage every night before going to sleep for several weeks. My son asked me for it. I didn't protest at all😂.
I would like to see him repeat the music that Ralph Macchiob played bs Steve Vai in Crossroads battle- heck both versions would be great & a For the Love of God cover to close it out
Ok I'm in. This wee video just inspired a thought. I posit you've got to have an ear and knowledge of the music, the culture that came before to be a true master to lift us up and go that next step in the dialogue-- with the past ever present, we are nothing without our ancestors and this cat plays the last 150 years, right there...well, maybe not all 150 in this short take but ya feel me. And I hear a lot of virtuosity these days and people saying yea but these players dont sound good, sound like R2D2 etc haha and I'd be one of them and I think its because that love and ear and the time spent with records and magazines and old b&w movies and your abuelitas records etc etc what we had what some of us still bury ourselves and our ear and heart in out of love for the world now and the world past...this is what those players lack and this is what makes Lange impeccable. He's an artist.❤
So often virtuosity seems to detract from musicality - here it is perfectly directed to that aim. Similarly, he has such extraordinary command, but uses it in the furtherance of expressive freedom. Wonderful! And what a delightful memento of your meeting!
I DO find it satisfying lest you think it didn't get through to me...and I'm willing to bet many more, especially prefaced by the overflow of info in the "Thanksgiving Dinner-like interview" that Rick was lucky enough to be a part of, as Julian "the Tele-Abe-Over-Thinkin' Lincoln-Lage; the man who wear's his heart on his FACE. I love his indefatigable/insatiable means of learning his craft and ALL that goes with that. thank you.
I wouldn't be half as good as Julian even if I started playing in the womb. My guitar started yelling at me about "How come you don't play me like that", so I snapped its neck.🤣
@@klaatubarada7556dude you are a hack. Ive been playing for 15 years and while lage isnt more technically gifted than any guitarist ever, in my mind he is the most musical. @@digineet8421 I mean, it’s not difficult to make a list of jazz guitarists, one finds more musical, or better, or any other term one wants to use. But, saying he’s a hack, just shows ignorance. I don’t even enjoy a lot of his work, as it’s just not my thing, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see that he is an amazing player, who knows his instrument very well. What I do like, I love. Too many guitarists, who criticize him, act like he’s just playing random things, with no structure at all. Yet, even just within this short, he repeats some phrases, that are very difficult to play. I don’t like Polyphia, but I still can’t deny that they are excellent musicians, who found something they love to do, and have made a successful career with it.
did he fluff near the end or was that part of it? it worked but sounded like he messed up the repetition? great left hand though and hes playing stretches others couldn't, i have a good reach too but that sort of thing takes decades lol.
During the second half all i could think of was cannonball addreley's take on autumn leaves... the piano part in the beginning but why do i bother no one knows ehat the heck im talking about
I thought that as well, but I gave a couple of his albums a chance and they're very accessible. I'd say he plays jazz, but not too jazzy! It's not like you're constantly searching for meldoy, he plays some beautiful stuff.
He doesn't let himself sink into patterns. So thoughtful.
Dude. This kinda Stuff genuinely makes momentarily happy until it’s over.

Watch Rick’s interview with Julian - it’s a killer!!
Awesome interview in whole. JL is a legend.
Big thumbs up! That put me in s good mood!

Lincoln so talented
Perfeição, timbre lindo, execução impecável. Parabéns.

Lincoln is Killin it!
Fantastic musician
Ab has some skills. Love that smooth 1830 swing
What a great player. Rick should do a Charlie Hunter feature also.
100%! Guy's an animal
Joe Goldberg kills me with such talent
I play just well enough to really appreciate talent and skill (that I lack.) Very nice piece.
What a joy to listen to
Folks, go see him live.
Beautiful ❤
Amazing
It's like he's off on a groovy island waving back at the musical mainland.
Something about a tele that is just unmatched.
Interesting style!
The beginning was groovy I like it

much love

Smooth a silk! 👍
That last bit 😮
thats amazing, i am working on long stretched forms too and that sorta all in one style but wow!
Of course...mad skills
Hybrid tele with the p90. Very warm tone. With the fusion chet/George technique
Its in a P90 case but its not a P90

Daniel Day Lewis vibes on that last shot there
