it is such a pleasure to have your music to listen to. it inspires my playing and writing in a fearless place. and looking forward to many more years of your creativity. blessings my friend.
The funny thing is I feel like he played "out" a lot more here than he normally does, but he does use dissonance in some of the most creative ways I hear any guitarist doing these days.
Julian Lage is a monster guitarist, admired by fellow musicians but lesser known than he deserves to be. His presence on this stage motivates Goose to up their game-- particularly Rick. Tremendous music.
@@ryansullivan2933I’m just some guy but I would say that Lage seems to lack an physical restriction to what he does on guitar. Nothing holds him back as a player and that paired with his extensive knowledge of jazz and music theory, and his desire to get weird, make him perhaps the most interest player to ever hold a guitar.
@@BounceChord, much as I don't rate or rank or measure art or artists, there truly is something genuinely unique and remarkable about Julian Lage. I have been listening to and watching videos of his performances for years (and yes, I shall remedy the glaring gap in my concert-going life that I have yet to attend a live performance of his), and I keep finding myself blown away by what he does. He is on another plane of artistic existence and I am so very glad he takes us along for the ride.
One of the craziest dual-guitar displays I’ve ever seen, and arguably the best sit-in of all time. I could not believe when I heard this was happening, and could believe it even less once I sprinted to nugs to watch it around a half-hour after it happened. Amazing! So stoked y’all shared this part.
So glad this happened; i hope every jamband fan goes out and finds more of Julian's music and it leads them into the insanely prolific and musically rewarding genre everyone still calls "Jazz". SO many great bands, artists, bands out there waiting for y'all to discover. Enjoy!!!
Julian Lage is…nope, can't do it justice. How do I reduce to mere words an artist of his caliber? Absolutely gobsmacked. If you haven't experienced Julian Lage’s music, I encourage you to do so. His trio, his solo work, everything. It's soooooo worth it. And while you're at it, watch some interviews of his. Genuinely kind, warm, intelligent (keenly so), and still so very child-like and enthusiastic about the mere act of creating music.
Couldn't agree with you more. People, and rightfully so, go on about his eccentric technique and what a bad-ass player he is. All true! HIs understanding of harmony is so fresh. Those uncomfortable bends, the brilliant resolutions. His compositions are on a master level, whether you dig guitar or not. When you hear him on acoustic guitar, with his hybrid picking and wonderful sense of melody, it's a game-changer.
This was incredible! Every single musician was red hot! I literally could not stop watching every single second of this. Never seen anything like it. 🙏
That was a cool moment, part of that face is because he knew he got busted. Julian was being a bit cheeky and copied the last lick of Rick's solo pass-off note for note. Julian also heard Rick stumble on a phrase right before that lick, so Julian WENT BACK to finish the hacked phrase, then played the finishing 3-note line across every key while using alternate fret positions. Rick simply laughed and stopped comping when he realized Julian was sort of saying "I think this is what you meant to finish that phrase with and here it is in every key across the whole fretboard."
Dear Goose Dudes, What a treat for you it must have been, and what a treat for all of us to listen to on repeat. You and Julian should go into the studio and take a stab at EC and Dwayne. It's been nearly 55 years. The world needs another album of guitar genius with live jam overtones pairing two of the current torch bearers. "Let go with the flow."
I saw Julian as a kid open for David Grisman Quintet and then sit in with David for the rest of the show, think he was like 11 years old. Great to see him here with Goose!!
Was that at the Sausalito arts festival? That’s the first time I saw Julian play as well. I have pictures of him and Grisman together which I’ve given to Julian. I used to see Julian around Santa Rosa and Sonoma County with his dad whenever a great guitarist came to town. The kid is a phenomenon.
That's what I loved about this, was Rick just smiling ear to ear as Julian did his thing. See 13 minutes in. That's respect and honor on a brilliant musicians face.
Watching and hearing Mr. Lage in a live setting with, arguably, the biggest jam band outside of Phish, is proof that greatness knows greatness. The pandemic UA-cam rabbit hole i went down, musically, allowed me to discover this inimitable talent. To see him ripping and unleashed in front of a crowd that he could never assemble on his own, is everything. And they all felt him. They all got a glimpse into this guy's genius. For all of you who've never heard of him but were floored when you heard him for the first time, follow the rabbit down the hole. You won't be disappointed.

I am blessed to have been to the 5 Goose shows I have been to. 3 in a week first week of September. I wasn't able to make it to Chicago but Chicago Night 2 IMHO is the best show this band has ever played.
Such a cool sit-in. Julian Lage of course being every guitarist’s music crush ❤. I love seeing the small amp setup he has next to the rest of the band. All the sound is in the fingers. And the heart.
As one of the few people in the crowd who knew who Julian Lage was, this was epic! Great music and it was awesome to see and hear the band get excited by playing with an idol. Goose rocks!
The fact that Page has enough respect for this band to grace them with his presence is a huge compliment and the fact that Goose knows enough to bring him on raises my opinion of them exponentially!
All time. He's a monster wherever you put him - who else comes close? George Benson? He doesn't have half Lage's range. Derek Trucks, same thing. Scofield? Bill Frisell? No. Sure, Shawn Lane would smoke him in a race, but still, nope. Same for Govan and not nearly as musical. And he can get genuinely weird like Sony Sharrock, Nels Cline and Blood Ulner. Nobody else can play classical counterpoint, bluegrass, and free-jazz convincingly. And obviously nail blues, rock and folk. Then on top of all that - he can play regular ole straight ahead jazz! And write!?? AND WRITE!!??? And perhaps most importantly- its always new, fresh and completely of the moment. I've seen him around 2 dozen times and it's always wildly different. Add to that the fact that he's the humblest, nicest guy. Definitely meet this hero - a genuinely kind soul. Don't get me wrong, i love all the names I've mentioned, but He's as complete a package as they come. And still very young 💪
Thank you for sharing. Didnt know this band. I will check their other stuff. Please, for those who didn't know Julian, check Julian Lage trio tour and try to get tickes for you and some music partner in crime. You can thank me later.

Blown away, every time. Imagine being in a band like this and having arguably the world's greatest instrumentalist and improviser say, "Hey can I play with you guys?" I am not nuts about jam bands. I would rather see him collaborate with Marc Ribot or Nick Cave or Afrirampo or a million others. Anyway, there has never been a guitar solo like this in any Phish concert.
wow! i hope this continues for the band and Julian. this was beast mode,,,,do a cd. much like keller and string cheese we are so lucky to have julian making music in our time. he is miles, ornett, bach and beethoven. and so much more. and a hell of a composer
