You ‘youngsters’ make me smile… growing up in the 60s and 70s - we had such GREAT music, and sadly, we often took it for granted!! It’s SO MUCH fun watching you all hear it for the first time. This was our ‘disco’ phase.. but The Bee Gees go WAY beyond this! They wrote great music, hit after hit, recorded much of it themselves, but also wrote for others. It’s a huge rabbit hole.. that you’ll enjoy going down!!

And all that great music we grew up listening to got lost and what is out there today, I just can't call it music. The 60s,70s and 80s was great stuff.

Yep, we didn't realize how good we had it with music back in the 70's and 80's, it started to go downhill from the 90's onwards and now music pales in comparison to what it used to be and the funny thing is, just like you, we took it for granted.

Lyrics explained by the Bee Gees:
Robin recalls, "The subject matter of 'Stayin' Alive' is actually quite a serious one; It's about survival in the streets of New York, and the lyrics actually say that". Barry Gibb also recalls, "People crying out for help. Desperate songs.Everybody struggles against the world, fighting all the bullshit and things that can drag you down. And it really is a victory just to survive.

Everyone seems to do the disco era of the Bee Gees but they are so much more than that. I grew up with this great group. Love their early music especially 60's-70's. Some of their early hits were "Spicks & Specks", "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "Massachusetts", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Lonely Days", "I Started A Joke", "Melody Fair", "First of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

This "disco" era is the one most people know but they could write and sing any style. All three were amazing singers and all three composed their songs including big hit songs for other big stars.

That whole Disco scene was shown in "Saturday Night Fever" with John Travolta. As a matter of fact, this song was used at the beginning of the movie when the credits were rolling.

Just so no one misunderstands, the 4th brother, Andy, was not a Bee Gee. Brothers Barry, Robin & Maurice started performing in 1955 & took the name BGs/Bee Gee's in 1958 (Andy’s birth year). By the time Andy was 10, his brothers were already internationally known. They were all very supportive of Andy’s solo career. Barry wrote, co-produced & sang back-up on Andy’s 1st #1 hit, I Just Want To Be Your Everything. Shadow Dancing, also a #1, was written by all 4 brothers (again Barry sang back up & co-produced). Sadly, Andy’s mental health issues, cocaine & alcohol addiction, took a terrible toll on his health & career (he was dropped by his label), but his brothers kept trying to help (professionally & personally). Early 1988, they announced he would become a Bee Gee (beginning with their next album & 1989 tour), but he died before that could happen (March 10, 1988, age 30, of myocarditis).

@Almost Average We can agree to disagree. I am related to several people who hate music and would only not sis still if they heard a funeral dirge, and then only to prove it was not thier funeral. My parents hate music in general and would call the cops if they hear music that is loud enough to bother them. I grew up listening to music on headphones because they hate music so I can only "dance like no one is watching" when they aren't watching.

One of the best soundtracks! If you like dancing - disco from around 1980 you need two albums: Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' and the soundtrack for 'Saturday Night Fever'.
After that you can build up the rest of your collection.
Neither of them will ever be outdated.
(A tip about a forgotten third, and fourth, album: Noel, 'Is There More To Life Than Dancing?', with 'Dancing Is Dangerous', 1979. Written and produced by Sparks; the brothers Ron and Russell Mael. They made an amazing album, 'No. 1 In Heaven', produced by Giorgio Moroder, just before they took on Noel. A lot of what they learned from Moroder they brought with them to Noel's album.)

Most airplayed song around the globus - every 20 seconds - this plays everywhere around the world and for sure it is the most iconic song of the 70´s decade. It’s an indelible cultural hallmark. None of that happens if that opening scene, is set to any song other than “Stayin’ Alive.Fifth best selling single of all time with 31 million epic sales.
I can’t imagine one single production tweak that could make “Stayin’ Alive” work better. Everything is exactly where it should be. “Stayin’ Alive” is one of those songs that sounds like it’s always existed. It’s crazy to think that human beings had to make it up out of nothing.
It’s a part of our shared cultural heritage now - one of those pop miracles that just never gets old, never wears off, never loses its charge. It remains alive. And indeed one of the most covered pop songs in history

New reactor to Bee Gees? They are a class of it's own, just a level by themselves where nobody else is to find! Some facts about that song: Sold over 30 million copies worldwide and in 2018, 'Staying Alive' passed by 'Yesterday' from the Beatles, which was recorded over 10 years earlier by having the most airplays over the planet. Well and you didn't know anything about Bee Gees. I can tellya why: That's because medias often tried to put them out of the game and so called musicexperts didn't realise how extremely good they were. Wrote them down. The truth is, they are just in a row with Elvis, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen. Nothing beyond, but maybe above for many musiclisteners like me! So go on, checkin' them out and start with 'Tragedy' and then go to some of their earlier stuff like 'Lonely Days' and 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'.

I know right?; It's the greatest thing, seeing younger generations listen to and really hear the music of these days past! Great music we had back then and it's so awesome to see the youngers love and appreciate it! It gives us, who were there, even a greater appreciation of all of it, well for me anyway lol! It's awesome!

I saw the BeeGees in concert at the St Paul Civic Center on July 21, 1979, exactly 43 years ago today, the day I just happened to watch your reaction of "Stayin' Alive." I had forgotten the date, and looked it up. Crazy coincidence. They had such a great Set List of songs, all the hits and more. It was totally awesome!

I used to dance the Latin Hustle to this song when I went clubbing back in the day. Those were the High School years back in NYC. I still dance to these songs when I hear them. You can also do the Bus Stop which is line dancing pretty much. This song always brings back good memories with old friends from the block and the high school years🥰 now I play this music with my granddaughters and my grandson because I try to keep that good music alive and pass it on. My generation had the best music 60s 70s and 80s✌🏻

I first heard them sign “to love somebody” & “Massachusetts” in 1967. But they started singing together as small children. They just finally hit it big in 1967. Then they really cashed in during the disco era. 🎵🎶😀👍

Thanks! I am such a huge, huge Bee Gees fan, forever have been! Look up one of their documentaries sometime and also look for their songs they wrote, not only for themselves, but for so many other great singers. They had so many, many #1 hits they wrote besides what they sang themselves. Super talented guys!! Their story is quite something!! I also grew up in the 60s and 70s and man, there were great songs that are still classics today! Take care and thanks. Connie (Oops, this isn't me! As Dagmar. points out, this was their late-1970s *comeback* ; they'd had great success in the 1960s/early 70s, but faded a bit. But they were given a chance to write songs for the movie ("Saturday Night Fever") and grabbed the chance. I'm glad to see you've done "How Deep is Your Love", but don't forget "Night Fever" either.
As for the early work which too many neglect, "New York City Mining Disaster 1941" is a must (don't be put off by the title) and there's a reason "To Love Somebody" gets covered so much. (The Janis Joplin version is kind of wild, but I like the original the best.)
    Thanks again

I'm a 2000s born, so you know I wouldn't really know much of the Songs before 2000, the only old songs/artists I actually grew up listening to was Michael Jackson. But then most songs I heard in Movies were those before 2000. The most recognizable songs I've heard were "We Will Rock You" and "Somebody to Love" by Queen and of course, I've heard "Staying Alive" a lot, to the point that everytime I hear it I would just dance subconsciously, this song is such a vibe that I wish I was alive when it came out.

When I first heard of these guys everyone thought they were Aussies. They were born on The Isle of Man. They moved to Australia in the 60's. They released 2 unsuccessful albums there so decided to move back to England later in the 60s. They were so unsuccessful they took a BOAT to England. On the way to England they heard one of their songs was #1 in Oz. They had a great career prior to Saturday Night Fever. They starred in the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie! Listen to their non disco stuff like "Words" or "Too Much Heaven". Enjoy! They actually considered themselves songwriters first. Literally hundreds of artists have performed their songs. For instance "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny and Dolly was written by them. It helps they were brothers and the younger 2 (Robin and Maurice) were fraternal twins. They had been singing together since they were children as they were a musical family. They had a younger brother Andy who was also a performer. His was a tragic story as he was addicted to coke and was depressed. Part of his depression was due to his breakup with Victoria Principal. He was in rehab then attempting a comeback when he succumbed to heart issues due to his cocaine use.
