👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my UA-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, UA-cam channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

I release on average 60 videos a year on UA-cam, record roughly 80 originals and 60 covers a year. I then keep some recordings in the vault for later releases. It’s the only way to keep going online and support my career so far. It’s an absurd amount of work, but if it wasn’t for that nothing would be happening. The music industry keep changing and evolving! Cool videos, you’re right about being consistent, it’s an important factor in today’s social media platforms.
Nice job mate lmk if you like my page @analogdragon
Awesome. I just watched some of your videos. They're awesome. I subscribe :)
I feel like I'm in a Cult because of how much I talk about you to my musician friends. Just wanna spread the word. Cult of Keyes?
I'm releasing a single next month and I'm following a lot of your advice!
Dude I love you, thank you so much that has really made my day 🙂🙂🙂
This is so perfect and exactly what I needed. I write so many songs and never release them bc of perfectionism. I’m done with that now... will release as often as i write :) thanks Damien
I release one or two songs a week. I write one in English and one in Spanish. I have ONLY been doing it for 2 months. But it has worked out for me! I want to show love to both my audiences
Love this! And love that you are looking at both languages.. very smart!
@@DamianKeyes Thank you, and thank you for the great content!
I started an "album" called Demolicious that was just demos of songs. My thought was to look at the songs how I originally wanted to record them vs. how the final product came out. Unfortunately, none of them have gone viral yet.
Absolutely spot on, I can say myself that I’ve been thinking about it from a traditional standpoint of “once a month” and trying to provide content for engagement before the next single. I’ll definitely try to worry less on making full-on releases and more focus on showcasing my ideas and storytelling 😁
agreed..
You are being so useful, thanks a lot for what you're guving us here 💪🏼 Hi from France 🤚🏼
Now in terms of being an electronic music producer this definitely gave me an interesting perspective on how i handle releases or unofficial releases. Really enjoyed the video man, thanks!
I have been thinking about these questions - need more output, but don't have time - and then ran across this video. The light bulb came on! Just turn on a camera, capture the journey, and post it. So simple, I wish I had thought of it! :)
What a wonderful unconventional way of thinking! I'm graduating in Dec and then going to be releasing music at the highest rate I can!
This video seriously hit me hard.. would love to collaborate on a video for the gully kids in India.. stay blessed Damian! 🙏🏽
I started lowering my official release output, but the stories and posts are still active
Just got 10k on instagram and 500 here bc of you Damian, thank you!
Ps: bought your two books, still reading it but amazing!
+diegosennamusic dude that’s amazing thank you so so much I really appreciate that 😊😊😊
What a great start to the day!
Yessss!
Thanks Damo. I've been playing my new songs to my small but loyal live stream audience for the last few months. I start recording the "proper" versions of some of them in the studio tomorrow.
Thanks Damian, I have actually been doing this the past year and have built up a following on Instagram, I just post all demos and acoustic versions and get feedback before recording. It really works, I was worried maybe I shouldn’t do this as I thought it may look amateurish but you have re assured me!
I can't believe this, actually I'm going to do this, release a single/track every week yes, I'm working on this idea for 7-8 months or more, I've got this in my mind in 2015 but then, I felt this ridiculous to" spam" people but here we go 2020, still creating every day it's getting endless and very interesting, you got very very good precise intuition Damian, this is the real musician superpower, to "see" the future, this video just said to me "YES DO IT, you are not an idiot!"
best wishes, thank you
Great advice. I did not think an audience would be interested in the journey/song writing process. Bad assumption on my part. After watching your video and realising my own behaviour, I actually watch the making of songs and albums all the time. Last week I watched the making of songs and albums by metallica. I am an audience member that loves to see the process and efforts. So obvious now you have mentioned it. As for writing a song once a week. I recently challenged myself to do that after “never having the time” and getting frustrated. I have four kids so life is busy, but I have managed to write three new songs in a week and a half but, I found if I adjusted I adjusted my evening priorities and habits from crashing on the sofa to sitting in front of my piano I would write for a few hours a session. I’m not saying it to blow the trumpet but, merely point out that what you are saying is very much possible and time can be found. Thank you as always for you wisdom.
Cheers from America! I'm new to your channel but I have a long, perhaps boring story involving a car accident throwing off my music career a couple of years and clawing to get back to the most basic creation but this has inspired me not to complicate it too much and do what I can now. Thank you
That's certainly a good way of looking at "releasing" music. The only issue is I have is that some folks might actually hear your song and go and record it themselves before you even get the chance to and..... OP! You got your track nicked
I Approve this message, mainly because it’s what I wanted/ needed to hear .
Cheers!
What you said about letting people in on your journey resonated with me very much. Thank you so much for the tips! 🙏🏻
This just gave me a whole new perspective. Thank you!
Epic discussion Brother. I really resonate with your perspectives. Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom. I ordered your book today. I will share your channel with my independent musician friends. Keep up the great work.
Sensible words (as ever)...an audience is insatiable for new material....and so much can come from small scraps of an idea. With that said I would like to try understand if one form of social media is more efficient at getting traction than another with new music?
My strategy is to release a full blown production a month!
Finished song with video!
Good idea..
Nice, how much of the process are you doing yourself?
Anya Karin Singer
That's great, but just want to ask u, iam an upcoming producer and rapper can we work on a singel together, ? ThanXx
I just recorded a song and video in a week. Now the real fun begins. Also planning on releasing within the next month. Good luck! ⚫
Thats what we are planning as well, we'll see if we can achieve that...
Great tips. I’m starting to release a single per month. Doing everything all myself from recording, mixing, mastering and visuals. 🤟
I started recording a song a day in August. I put them all on UA-cam. Let's see where it goes.
Well done. I’ve been posting regularly to bandcamp, which works well for my small audience I already have, but I have noticed that Instagram and Facebook gets more traction. I’ve just been at a loss for what to put there. This idea of works in progress could definitely be an answer for content. Thanks!
whether you agree or not............its the right converstaion, consideration, concept. its the threee con's.....but in a good way. activity is always doingness....great DK Ruth B..The Kooks examples for underwitting the point. Cheers Bruh...
I didn't know I needed to hear this but wow. I tend to keep so many songs hidden because they're not finished. I then forget about them while I could use them as short content like you describe. So silly. Thank you so much for everything Damian!
LOVE THIS CONTENT. FOLLOWED. DONE. BOTH YT AND INS.
thanks for the work Damian.
I've got a load of half finished song on my phone and in my head, maybe i should film snippets and let my audience chose if i record them. Nice Damo i'll give that a go.
I'm still amazed how much value you giving to us. And even how much value you give me as being not a rock band but making electronic music. Most of your videos are cool but every 10-15th are simply brilliant and this one also started my mind and will get into making fast remixes for pop and rock bands for these unofficial releases (so anyone who's reading this and want a house remix, DM me on insta :) ). Thank you Damien a lot!!
Hello Damian!
First, I'll say , congratulations on your recent engagement! I have learned so much by watching your videos! It really has helped me to think outside the box in regard to today’s music industry. I think I've seen you talk about almost every topic except one...............
My question to you is, if I only have a very limited budget to work with, and I have to choose what to spend my money on, what, in your opinion, is the best thing to do.............record another song, or make a video to a song that I previously released but was never able to make a video for?
My dilemma is that I only have $1,000. I need to decide on if I will record another song or make a video to last year’s song. I have tons and tons of songs that I have not been able to record, so part of me wants so badly to record, but the other part of me ...same thing with the videos.
What would you do?
Good stuff Damien. As a musician with a jazz background, I’m always looking for perfection before I put anything out. I’m changing that real quick because it can hold me back at times. I would have never thought of putting out something so raw in the beginning stages. That stops now.
this is something that I have thought about how to do a release. doing a release is the easiest thing you can do weather official or unofficial. even if it to you the artist is crap to the people who hear the song it may be a gold song to them. I started a youtube channel and I am trying to decide how to use it. the official songs that I release will be done the traditional way. going through all the channels to record it and then release it. but the unofficial songs ones that I am not thinking of releaseing of just getting a piano track to and releasing on youtube once or twice a week so that people can hear something new. it is a way of doing things that is not done that much. and right now my computer sets in my bed room hahaha. I do not think about getting rich doing this. all I think about is the music. and if people enjoy it or not. there will be crap songs I write just because I get writers block or I think its the best that I have done and its not. the thing is once I jump off that cliff into doing this thats when the fun will start.
I love this!. Confirming the approach I’m taking with TikTok ➡️UA-cam ➡️DistroKid. Thank you!
You're so right mate! I make so much music but I've been holding it back as I'm too "proud" or I want to release it as an album but that's NOT how it works anymore... Can always release an album once all the songs are out anyway! Nice one x
Father Funk thanks dude it’s Defo something I want people to think about and then it’s up to you how you feel about releasing 😊😊😊
so true! consistency it's everything!
I'm with you on this, Damian, thanks for the affirmation :D
I have started releasing my so called musigrams on SoundCloud and Facebook. I will start sharing them on UA-cam now. Thinking about more types of content too.
Thanks Damian. I'm an artist just stepping out onto the world stage. Last November my first EP was released everywhere music is consumed. Whilst I'm looking to follow up later this year, I have to say that your advice resonated a ton with me, and probably did for other artists as well. Bravo for shedding light on a listener's perspective and for the nudge to step outside of our egos.
Hi Damian, It's funny actually, I was thinking about this today! You gave me multiple light bulb moments during this. Excellent content mate, keep up the good work 🤘
i was thinking what to do for next week cause im afraid to suffer burnout, but then youtube recommended you again. Thanks, i know what i must do
This is a really good idea, to take your fanbase with you on the journey, I LOVE THAT! Thank you so much for the inspiration, I will do exactly this, I've been wondering if one song a week is enough, but I figure what I can do is release one composition a week at the same scheduled time each week, but also have special releases, and then also release extra songs, and parts of what can be a much bigger composition, leading up to the full symphony. Thank you!
I think there is a difference if you are a full-time musician and if you only do it as your second job/hobby. Because I fall into the second category, I will stick with one song/track a month. I would agree though for those whose music is a primary occupation or they aspire for the music to be their primary occupation, they should write, record and release more. Happy releasing 👍
This is absolute gold!
Yes in an ideal world it's possible.but have one lost listen to the overall mix and sound quality haste can lead to wrong decisions that could destroy an artists reputation .as the old saying goes think before you leap
Yes, my man. YES
I’m doing that! I’m releasing a song a week for a year 52 in 52 I finish November 28th 😎👍
Very profound message, makes me question myself as a perfectionist oh, and is an old-timer if this is really the road for me to be a little bit more Carefree with releasing music and let people decide thank you for the great video
Thank you. I was of the old school mentality and also a recovering perfectionist. I will continue to watch and learn
Thank you for this video! I'm actually going to start doing this to see if I should even record the whole song in the first place.
great idea!
I love this idea, Damian. Thanks, as ever, for the opportunity to shift my thinking about these things. One concern I thought of is copyright--typically I do a sound recording copyright with the Library of Congress after the studio recording is complete--do you think there's any concern with putting out a video of me and a guitar performing the new song in my living room, then bringing my fans through the process, and officially copyrighting the finished product later? Thanks so much! Best, Dave Jay from NYC
Never mind what I'd said above, Damian!! "Strike that--reverse it!"
I saw one of your other vids. about copyright, time stamps, and the like, and it answered my concerns. (You should offer a FAQ Table of Contents).
Thus, I have put together a new vid. of my own (while teaching myself Final Cut Pro, nonetheless), to introduce my new song, "Time Machines". Thanks for the continued great ideas and inspiration!!!
Best, Dave Jay from NYC
Please feel free to check it out here...enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/1w8Z5yDHlPE/v-deo.html
Just rewatched this, and have to say the message is pretty darn profound and paradigm shifting. I have no clue what the industry, or even my own music will be like in a year or two, three, but I am really excited about all the possibilities and opportunities that pop up when you start thinking outside the box! Thanks Damo 🙌🏽
I'm thinking every two to three weeks would be a good middle ground. Looking forward to releasing my second tune on Wednesday.
I released two songs this year, seven months apart..but I worked my ass off behind the scenes. I guess I should go into the studio more. it's so expensive funding music that's radio quality. and I don't want to settle for anything less!! I guess everyone's different. but besides posting archives and doing a couple of features (that the others hasn't released yet), I definitely wish I released something official in between those two singles
Thank you. That really made me think.
Very cool Damo! I been doing this purely for reasons to motivate myself by releasing weekly often same songs but better than last time posted 😆
Citizen Warwick love it 😊😊😊
@@DamianKeyes Thanks dude. Really appreciate the advice you give in videos I find the advice is very relevant to my journey since in my position, as an amateur musician even still building the skills, it serves no purpose to invest in "studio recording" and infrequent Spotify releases. I am also a software engineer and I guess applying versioning to my songs allows me to release early and release frequently. Anyway I could babble for ages man, once again thanks for your awesome advice and advocating this philosophy and method! Big up! ❤️☀️🌎✊
Love that story about The Kooks.
Ahmet Ertegün of Atlantic records famously said that all bands should record about 30 songs to produce a 12 song album of their best material... and he knew a thing or two about selling music.
great knowledge, great content overall.
cant wait to share my new sound this month. blessings.
Thank you so much, I am so anxious now, deliciously so because of you, I have new music and old, but currently a big problem however, my computer crashed and I’m singing for the money (waiting for check to come through) to get computer repaired; I am so anxious to upload to my music channel, I am so anxious I can feel it in my entire being, thanks for the inspiration....
best advice
SO COOL.Love how you think. Very unique and modern.
Good stuff dude!
Interesting points
Damo! You are reading my mind!!!! Your last couple of videos are answering soo many of my questions I have been having lately. It's uncanny man! Thank you for all the great advice. Amazing as always
Oh man. You said it in this video. Everything we need to do. Thank you!
Thanks Damo. You just answered something I’ve been pondering and dabbling with for a couple months now. I think I’ll start sharing more of my creative process for songwriting. Sharing the “journey” as everyone seems to be saying.
WoW! Another fantastic video, Damian! So... I have about 20 original finished songs, so I think I'll record most of them live in my apt and let the audience (that I don't have yet) decide what they like. And hopefully comment why they like certain songs more than others. Thanks again and I'm going to be incorporating my T-shirt link on all my new videos! Thank again, Damian!
Hey damien. Thx for your comments here. Might i suggest an analogy of writing? Writers, of which I am also one, revise, edit, + delete endlessly + everyone seems to respect + understand this as part of the process. I taught creative writing for several years + never got push back with revisions + tabling poorer things to focus on the stronger material. And yet it differs drastically in the music world? Why? And I believe that is the point you are trying to make. Process is important. Revision is necessary. And not everything you write needs releasing, though more of it should be for today’s consumption habits. Thank you. Best, shelby smoak
read your book. really enjoyed it. Some very useful tips which we are implementing. I particularly liked the bit that said I always reply to all messages area after a few days.
+LegPuppy thanks so much dude, I Defo try and do my best whenever and wherever possible 😊😊😊
This is f*ckin gold mate, it’s tough to break away from traditional release methods because it’s all we know. Time to get back to the drawing board..
I LOVE it! I've got a number of songs that I've written that have never seen the light of day, I am going to DO THIS!
Geej Mauriva thanks so much Geej 😊😊😊
@@DamianKeyes Hey there, I did it! I released one of my songs as just a "socials only" release. The song is called Break Free and I released it on FB, IG and YT. Here it is on YT: ua-cam.com/video/RPU8jGz1kjs/v-deo.html
I tagged you when I released it on IG. Would LOVE your opinion, if you have time. THANKS for all you do!
Great video, I agree with the perspective on releasing stuff on youtube first.
Will be doing this today, need a first video for our UA-cam anyhow. Thanks Damien!
That's a good point man.. The traditional release structure is so stressful and expensive that it's impractical for up in coming artists to maintain.. Redefining the release structure.. I like where you're going with this!!
This is such a great idea
I like your "straight to the point/no bullshit" approach.
Your tips really help. We don't need to use them as a manual, but as a mind opening guide.
fantastic video!
This is a fantastic vid mate. Really useful. I know a lot of people can be very protective of their stuff and often it never sees the light of day.
This is amazing. I'm going to try this to build me a fan base. Thanks a bunch Damian 👍
Good stuff Damien. Coincidentally we were thinking about this earlier today and went trawling through some phone footage from rehearsals and writing sessions. Made a couple of short videos...to be released any day now ;)
We still wanna do all that other stuff with full production and make albums and so on but there’s definitely a place for those incidental gems
Thanks Damian, I was sceptical at first, only because I misunderstood the points you were making. I’m taking this on board.
What do you think If we release 14 tracks and original videos? what could be the time frame ?
Great video as always. Thanks for the tips
Thank you Damian, super helpful as always 🙂
Thanks so much Sanath 🙂🙂🙂
These Snippets of songs that I write and post. What's to keep somebody from stealing them? The ideas aren't really copy written are they? How can I protect them besides getting a copyright?
I'm also interested in that! I heard that witnesses are the best to have for that (hopefully never happening) cases. So if your followers can confirm the date of upload, it could work, right?
@@vibegeist thanks for the feedback bro. I checked out your stuff and I liked it. Keep at it.
Message received. Release music once a week!!
Love your audiobook STOP SELLING MUSIC btw
Always thinking outside of the box. People always get nervous when you bring up this approach. i like it.
Thanks for the great advice!
Jonah Kaylor thanks so much Jonah 😊😊😊
Damian Keyes no problem at all 🙂
Damian, I have a question:
I'd like to know what is the best way to promote a single assuming that I have a few thousand dollars to do it and that I am a solo artist - meaning that I don't have other band members and friends to help with that? I'd like to know what should I do if I have a single that I think is a potential hit? Im thinking about putting lots of money on social media to show it, let's say, to every single person between 16 and 49 yo - in NYC or London, because then it'd have a lot of potential to get traction, internationally also.
What do you think. Would love to see a video on that. Thank you.
Good question, I'm wondering the same!
Ander A I’ll get on this over the next few weeks thanks dude. I’m away for a few days but as soon as I’m back I will get on it 😊😊😊
Personally I think your probably just wasting your money and I mean absolutely no disrespect in saying this. No matter how great your new song is your chances of breaking out to a wider audience is statistically somewhere between minuscule to zero. There’s so much new music being released odds are it’s like releasing gas into the ether. Your chances of your new music actually being heard increase greatly when you already have some type of a fan base already built on a local level.
This is only developed by doing live gigs. Unfortunately I don’t believe there are shortcuts for most musicians regarding this either. That said there’s nothing wrong with enjoying all of this as a hobby as it’s still great fun! It’s just my opinion that it’s most likely not worth investing the cash into on a serious level unless your willing to do the gigs and put the work into it. You do what you feel is right by all means here - it’s your 💰 money!
@ Ander A - Just to be clear I’m not discouraging anyone not to release new music! As you know there are already multiple platforms available to do this without it costing you anything. I just think dumping a few thousand bucks into digital promotions is generally a waste unless you already have a fan base built or you just have money to burn. You already have UA-cam to promote your new music and that’s free.
King Trance not *necessarily* true.
That is exactly what Im doing, Im composing two or three songs a month but will be releasing only one song a month. The main problem honestly is budget. In my case a new release means hiring : A session drummer, mixing and mastering at a studio and if possible a music video.
I agree about the idea of showcasing even rough demos tho its a good opportunity to have material for social media and gather reactions and input to help us decide where are we putting our money. Ive been doing that on instagram just pressing play in Logic and let people hear what Im working at the moment. I don’t have social media traction yet so obviously, looks fun but in my particular case will not work. I think we should all see the stage of our careers at any particular moment in order to develop a strategy. For me right now, I need the wow factor with fully produced songs.
Another thing that worries me is that the current speed of social content and the massively decreasing attention span will end up in releasing a song per minute in a few years. We as artists at some point need to establish the rules of content for creativity endeavors. Utopia? Maybe but true.
Wow egotism and perfectionism was a slap in the face 😬 you’re so right.... it’s what has been stopping me for years.... I’m so grateful you keep making these videos - cause I just saw this one you released 7 months ago- but in a resent one you made on how we should take advantage of current global lock down situation you really did give me the kick in the butt to actually get out of my comfort zone ( and now realizing what was my comfort zone) and actually doing smth.... thank you Damian you’re the best
One,two EP's per year is best. I released every 15 days a single track, and people get spoiled with it and i get pressured then. No need to overthink Damian. People dont deserve track every 15-20 days.
Good advice thanks...nice bass too :)
Fantastic, insightful and thought provoking. Just the right advice for the emerging artist in these times.
Thanks so much 🙂🙂🙂
Nice video! There is an episode of Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast “Revisionist History” where he talks about the different working styles of two artists. Picasso’s approach - where there is a ton of output and the best rise to the top, and Cezanne’s - where he works and reworks the same ideas until they are perfect. The kooks seem to be like Picasso but I find that I’d rather write and rewrite a very particular song until it's perfect in my eyes. Regardless though, a single a month is a good goal!
+Do Ra that’s really interesting I’m going to go and find that.. thanks for letting me know that I’ll get on it now 😊😊😊
Phenomenal value, lightbulb moment for me. Any timeline for when your audiobook version (stop selling your music) will be released?
