I definitely agree with you. While i do promote music, i kind of do a storyline sort of thing alongside my music just as a ... bigger piece of media, and i post that sort of thing if i create a cool little video. Or i post funny things that i see or do. Those posts get more engagement than a post where its HERES MY NEW SONG. I always saw IG as the more.. personal side of an artist, sort of like how twitter is also a more.. personal (yet louder) version of IG. I hope that made sense!

Yo Damo, you just keep pushing great content, i'm very impressed by far and your insights have been very helpful.
My two cents on instagram - I don't really follow bands anymore as they don't really put up content that I would like to see. I am not interested in show announcements which are happening in the other side of the world, tour posters, random pictures of them drinking beer in a studio or having dinner, or posing with other bands after tour shows, all that is cool but that doesn't really interest me personally. What I would like to see is content on WHY do they do what they do, what are their motives, giving more context on what the band stands for, how does their life relate to the music that they are doing. ,,I have a boring life'' is just an excuse as you need to learn how to communicate yourself, if you really try and speak up, show what you are about and how that channels through your music - that's quality content. That's what everyone was wandering about musicians through decades, collecting bits and pieces from interviews to learn about their personality. Now we all have this opportunity, but are not very creative nor thoughtful on how we present yourselves. Imagine that you are in power to narrate this ,,on-going mixed media interview'' and share things that you want people to hear. Use the platform to speak your mind and have the courage to be yourself.

I completely agree that instagram is a hard platform to build on. There is a fine line on instagram between what people want to see and what we can put out. I follow a lot of music education (like tutorial channel) and so I do end up watching a lot of music videos on there, but sometimes, I catch myself moving past it all, and stories, quite quickly.

Thanks Damo, love your insight on this topic! Other than the examples your brought which seem to be the norm for huge artists famous outside IG, there is a rising community of people becoming famous on Instagram itself through videos of their covers/originals: e.g. Look at the community around the "pickup" pages, people who get a feature there are quickly building a following and are often introduced into the LA / NY live scenes while previously inactive if not on Instagram. So there seems to be that side of the story running parallel to what you discussed. Cheers!

    Hi Damien,
Another great video and I completely agree with the majority of points that you mentioned. I see countless bands similar to mine on Instagram, but literally only using it to share gig posters or album artwork which doesn't really get the engagement that you'd hope for. I personally started really building my band's brand on Instagram a few months ago and in that have acquired over 1,000 followers in about 3-4 months. I strongly believe in expressing more of what is behind the music, rather than the music itself on social media. For example, we're currently writing a concept album based on magic in Anglo-Saxon England, therefore we are posting content based on mythical places around the country, different concepts regarding this and ethereal imagery (this helps as I am creative with photography, modelling and artwork too!). I think really knowing who your audience on Instagram is really helps too and making sure you are creating content that will appeal to them. One of the biggest ways I've found to grow my engagement though is really making sure I am part of the community - searching through related hashtags and commenting and interacting with other people's content who I think will be interested in ours, I have found that simply just posting in stories or in your feed without this kind of interaction yields little results. I think until you reach a certain level where you are showing up in the top posts in the hashtags that you are posting in, you really have do do the work and find people and encourage them to check your profile out rather than just waiting for them to come to you!
I'd really appreciate if you checked out our profile anyway at @edenfall_official and let me know what you think!
Hopefully see you around Waterbear in this next year, I'll be on the Masters course!
    Clare.

Hey Damo, what would your advice be for a band/artist DEBUTING an album/EP/single. A lot of the advice you give is based around artists with pre-existing fan bases and pre-existing music to direct them to. The question of how to build a fanbase as an artist when you've got no art might be silly, but I was wondering if there were any tricks to building hype or fan engagement even before any music has dropped as a way to cement a fanbase to sell the first album/EP/single too? It seems as though current practise is to just dump out the debut and then refer back to that as a way to get fans when you're next releasing anything, further down the line.

Great tips. I do agree that it’s not the platform where people are trying to discover music. People do however love memes. A friend of mine recently started making short video memes with our tracks as the audio to the memes. Works like a charm. Tons of comments. People anticipating the release of the track. The example we used was a video of these guys at a house party using bottles to pretend to mix like djs. Brilliant!!

    @alekrous6650 5 років тому +1

    Hi Damain,
I just watched your 20 days promo for new single video. I checked out justin bieber Instagram like you said and as next I watched this video here.
I know its very difficult to give a strategy about all this thing's and it's no criticism but like what you told in the 20 days promo video is the opposite of this video but I know u would say it's a 50/50 mix of all this thing's.
I bet that the most fans of popular artists are very interested to check their life because they consume the music already. It a huge difference about a well know success and beautiful artist and that one that starts out. The thing is that you have to show up your music on ig to make ppl know that you are a artist. If nobody knows you ..why your lifestyle should inspire ppl to check your music if you don't show your music in some way. In some ways you have to be known as a artist and this strategy will work out but for the most of us it's not about 1mio follower... it's to start out and build a fanbase that will make it able to tell about your lifestyle. It's just to many things to keep in mind...what's to goal with it is the only real way to figure out what's the best strategy for artists. There are so many artists making only music content playing guitar or piano or making beats or sing. The best make hundreds of thousands likes and followers only with that.
I liked your 20 days promo video very much its super helpful because that's what most new artist want to know! If I follow your tips its also means 20 days of music content on ig what's the opposite of showing my day and myself. Mixing it all together is the best way for sure but like I've read in the comments... ppl have really think to much about whats interesting to post about me every day 20 times... its pure brainfxck that's the main problem. If I would have a life like DJ Khalid it's not that problem but only because he is already famous... He could make any kind of video from his day without being creative because ppl just consume. He could make a video while he sleeps and millions would like that but that's not really a interesting moment. If I would do the same ppl would think. .. "and now...where is the value" ...exactly..I'm a nobody for them = no value. 😫
So I have to promote my music first to get famous and than making lifestyle videos...
Would be cool to hear if you think the same about this. Apple used also the strategy to create something for nerds. .. this nerds help them to get famous around the country and world. You have to impress your first fans with music...this kind of ppl look for music and don't scroll thru only ... they are really interested to discover new cool music. Your job is to build relationships with that ppl that are highly intrested in music and not watching you sleep or with your crazy friends. Here is why the 20 days promo video is very good. This kind of neardy fans will help you to get more famous if you give them new music in smart ways. If this ppl start share your music and tag you for their friends the journey begins.... but you have to impress your nerdy fans for a long period before you realize the "average" ppl check you out.. hip-hop for example start always in the underground. .. its 100% about your music and not your lifestyle. .. with 50k or so followers you can think about this kind of stuff slowly... apple invented the mouse ... nerds loved it so much that apple now is able to make promo with lifestyle videos like .. if you buy apple = cool guy... but they don't stated that way... they earned it with the other way... it's a process and I think its important to show music and find the right fans... its about how to get your neardy music fans to promote your music for you and tell other people about you to be able reach a wider and average audience. It's a step wise process. ..do you agree?

☝🏾... Because you are affirming much of my own process. As an aging (dusty?) Emcee, I just have no desire to do the same things I did 30 years ago. I think it's draining nostalgia at best, and boring more often than not. I do like to 'show and prove' as it were, but on MY terms, and not the infinitely xeroxed version most people subscribe to. I don't believe in impossible, but most of my being's fibers? Just. Can't. That stuff doesn't personally excite me at all. The key to me is defining what you want out of Instagram (or any platform) and what you're willing to put in. If you want to build a bit of awareness and keep people up to date with what you're doing then posting daily is definitely enough. If you want to rule the socials world, then by all means spend your every waking moment posting the minutiae of your day, but I don't believe anyone in the history of the world has ever been interesting enough to warrant that. I've definitely found that when I've posted 'proper' content (polished video & songs) I've been really disappointed by the lack of engagement. As Damo says I think that this is because the platform is not suited to it (hopefully anyway....) but when I've posted more ad-hoc stuff it's done really well. I don't fully agree that you can't push music directly on Instagram as people seem to really like rehearsal and gig snippets, but then this ties in with the "behind the scenes" stuff which I actually find way more fun to do ...... @jpsampsonmusic - if anyone wants to come say "hi"

The Artists I follow occasionally post music such as when the have a new release. I wouldn’t say it’s never something to do... when you have a new song people will usually be stoked to hear it in the feed... that’s at least in the pop edm space... good ideas about sharing more on Instagram and adding more value 🙏

Thanks Damien! I think the last thing you said is what I’ve gotta do, Instagram is just a place for me to build the bands brand and tell a story and if people are interested they’ll click over to UA-cam or Apple Music or Spotify. I chose the wrong platform a year ago! UA-cam, here come The Former Knights!

The reason why most of these artists are on instagram, is because they have both the record label promotional team and other promotion agencies doing most of the hard work.
which is basically branding and promoting on youtube, spotify, apple, googleplay, facebook so on and so forth.
so on the artists downtime, they spend it mostly on 2 platforms, which are instagram and twitter. Some artists also use snapchat and facebook, but usually the facebook accts
are managed by a specific promotional team that acts on behalf of that artist. Hence the reason why you mostly find artists on instagram and twitter.
Thats the part that most record labels promotion team, artists agencies & booking agencies dont tell you about.
Because the amount of time the artists spend in studio time recording new music, traveling to different locations for appearances and performances & other events,
they do not have the time to be spending in all the social media locations, hence why they choose to be on 2 of the most used ones which are instagram and twitter because its easier & faster.
the agencies and record label promotional teams takes care of everything else. including youtube.
Though, some record labels promotional staff and agencies requests to have the password to the twitter and instagram socials, so in case they need to pull down a post
that the artists posted that they were not suppose to do. its rarely seen or done, but ive heard of a few who have done it.
Sometimes an actual artist assistant or person in charge of artists promotions post on these socials work for the record label or promotional agencies, acting on behalf of the artists.
it depends on artists, agencies and label.

Hi Damien! Big fan from the USA. Two questions since I am writing in 2021 - how do you social proof and show your life is interesting when you can't gig live these days? I do virtual gigs but I am not sure if that is enough. Let me know!

Whenever someone mentions Dj Khaled, I can hear that scream in the back of my mind.. " Dj Khaleeed" lol XD seriously thank you for the content and all the research behind it. At first I was scared of telling my stories and thoughts on ig, I believed the platform was all about stunning footage. But when I opened up and used posts to tell about my life, which for all of us it's what lies behind the artistry, I felt the relationship with the people got more genuine, they engaged much more and I felt the audience closer than before.

Is it your band? What is your insta and UA-cam accounts? I'll follow them. I've been working hard to find indie artists like myself to follow and support who don't have 1,000 or more followers. Also, I promise I'm not one of those annoying ppl who unfollow as soon as I get a follower. That crap is so annoying! I enjoy supporting Independent artists 🙂

Really helpful video, but I have a question! When you recommend running your paid ads 'on the side', what are you talking about in more technical terms? Should you run them from a separate page or just refrain from posting them in your normal feed? How does it work

    • @idealafterlife2019
      @idealafterlife2019 5 років тому

I think it should be done the same account, but your activity will be larger when following this strategy. That means that your ads will not be so disturbing for your followers. Meanwhile you may get new fans via your ads too.

Got 2 questions brother, we are a band but we see each other once a week, we have an Instagram account for the band, and personal accounts. The question is:
Would you recommend socialize more through our personal social media or through the band account?
If you say the band account, is it better we all upload our stories personally into that account or shall the lead singer take control over the account to be the influencer?
I would love an answer to that question :)
    Thank you

People want the story and the journey.. They want to stand for something and you will factor into that so think more about how you can touch people with more than the music and the music will grow.
      1. Who are you and why do you do this (This should be in every piece of content)
      2. How can you bring value to your audience with music at the heart of everything
      3. Get into the comments and give people your time
Repeat this for one year and I promise it will start to work!

Hey Damian here from Chile, got a big big question, how can I build a music career in US (for example) being miles and miles away? Longstory shortstory music is no good deal at Chile, people dont like r&b as in other countries and I wanted to go to US (in this example) but I think I cannot just arrive being no one, any advice on this? You are the best!

Here’s a thought: my band has had people unfollow us on insta because we post too much and its always spamming the feed. Also i have unfollows people and pages for the same reason. I feel like just posting all the time isn’t necessarily the answer

    • @MrVleker
      @MrVleker 5 років тому

True, but he's talking about the algorithm. Spamming your feed is annoying but the stories are easy to skip yet very powerful, so if people unfollow because of too many stories than they aren't really interested.

Peace Damian, I dig your content and this promotional tactic B. I’m curious to know what artists you’er checking for - that are (On Your Doppler Radar for being Fresh)? Your are emphatic with your disdain with Khaled’s and others music, so I’m curious to know what’s musically moving the needle for you in Q4. You probably could put me up on that NEW NEW. In my not so humble but correct opinion, knowing who and what is musically moving in “The Streets” aka The Ends globally makes for a better marketer.

A valuable perspective, Damian. On IG I try to share my knowledge gained from experience and inspire others by showing my studio building projects, things I am learning as I progress and conveying my undying enthusiasm for music as a whole. I do post some short clips of me playing guitar but it’s not my main focus.

    Hey Damo,
So I have spent the last few months working on music. I'm very close to finishing and releasing our bands first single. Just needs to get mixed and mastered.
Anyway, I was discussing how we should release it and my producer said to try and get it in a spotify playlist. However a that's a process that takes a few weeks but I'm trying to release this asap. Do you think it's worth the shot getting it into a playlist that has no guarantee?

Question. Im an aspiring artist and i live in lithuania. I want to build a personal brand to help market my music, but i want to target inernational, english speaking audience. So do i make content in english or lithuanian? Because ive heard somewhere that first you have to conquer your city/country before trying to spread elsewhere and consumers in lithuanian market pay less atention to english content than their native. (My lyrics are in english btw) Thank you in advance
