What a great video, I just released my first single and was worried because it didn't really get many streams or plays but I guess it's just an introduction. That party analogy is pretty on point haha
Fantastic advice, and by breaking it down in terms of beers and simple popularity in the long run, really makes an awful lot of sense. So much sense in fact, that it should be common. I released my first album in January and have barely plugged it. I released no singles, I just went straight in with what I had created and released it on all streaming services as a personal achievement. I felt as though that would be satisfying, being able to say to others “I have something and here’s where you can find it,” but I created it, and as time goes on I want more people to hear it. I have no strategy or right hooks, I just love creating music and keeping myself sane! I will take on board your advice gratefully and try to build a plan of how I can achieve more listeners! Many thanks to you, sir for the eye opener!
Looking back, I saw this vid in 2019. I released my first solo single in March 2020, and followed that with 4 singles going into 2021. Last week I had an interview with a New Zealand radio station, to over 5 million listeners live on FM & online to 54 countries...while I was the #1 requested artist during the last couple of weeks. Thank you Damian Keyes...great advice.
I appreciate your approach, the "no magic bullet" or the distinction between being a huge artist with lots of anticipation between releases and an unknown who will be a "curiosity" for new fans is so important. I really dig how you broke this down; feeling quietly determined to make my splash. Thanks a grip DK!
This was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you! I'm at a point in my life where working on music is hard, I work part time and have two small children, I work on a few songs at a time and release up to 5 songs a year. I've also just started releasing songs properly so don't have much content to listen to. So I'm just trying to build my catalogue until the kids grow up a little more and I can dedicate more time to releasing more regularly. I've definitely been at a loss as to what a good strategy for releasing music should be, I have basically been just releasing with some information about the singles on my socials but not doing much promo, I knew my releases weren't a big right hook but didn't think that it could be something else instead. You're right, with every release I put out I can definitely get it out in front of people, network with fellow independent artists, try to just get involved in the community a bit more so that in a few years time I'm able to release singles and it be a thing people care about. It's given me a lot to think about! With that in mind, please do check out my latest single, Dark Place, on spotify: open.spotify.com/track/4Vqe7lNdrOnAqDAIGEFIEO

6:11-7-22 Lemons. Plentiful now more than ever. So how do you plan to have people step up and come back to your lemonade stand? In others words...today’s over saturation (of entertainment) requires more product to make impact/show value. The “works for me but maybe not you” is because of artistic expression. The juice/context from the lemon/single. What makes your juice different? More or less sugar? Infused with other fruit? There is a video of Deadmau5 somewhere on here that talks about his “company”. Strictly speaking, his success comes from effective “world building” ....creating and letting people into a huge space of creative expression. Again, a necessity stemming from a result of general over saturation imo. So yeah, from another comment debate, music is definitely “content” now. The progression of accessible entertainment paved that way. Despite any annoyance it is still progress. Just depends on the perspective for positive-negative takeaway.
My head is still spinning from the wealth of knowledge that you shared with our artists community. Wow! I will be sure to keep Damien Keyes and the rest of the this amazing community of musician up to date on my upcoming single launch schedule for Sept 2019 and the evolution of my project's journey.

So thank you very much for the invite to add a track to the comments. My name is Tom Armstrong of Lazuli Shoals and I wrote the song "Reminisce" while making a living as a timber cruiser in the Rocky Mountains of North Idaho. I write most of my songs on an acoustic nylon string guitar and it was October 17th 1989, (Notice the date). The snow was coming down pretty hard and we wound up staying in our camper trailers that day as its impossible to work on the side of a mountain in 3 feet of snow. You could hear the logging trucks tires whining as they gained speed on the wet asphalt when coming off the mountain and down the Saint Joe River Road. They'd sing for miles. In the evening when the sun had set I was able to turn on the Radio. In those days...daze, of am/fm radio you had to wait for the sun to set to get a clear radio wave to tune in on. Great video man! New subscriber here for sure! Also thanks for offering to let us punt our singles. Just released one a few days ago called ‘Dead & Stranded’... I’m a small artist and don’t have a dream of being a rock star, but love to share my music and this insight will help me do so more effectively!
Honestly im glad my videos dont reach much people yet. So that when they do in the future, there is lots for people to backtrack. Thanks for the advice Damian.
We've released two new singles and now we're done "Touring" and we will return to the studio to finish our first full length! We already have 3 EP's out. Please have a listen on our page! Love your channel! Best regards! Peter // SUPERSCUM
I dig the music. From a creative standpoint I can see how that band name was chosen. But to be honest, I disagree with it. It doesn’t ring well, and can easily be lost on a person who wouldn’t take the mental time to understand how the name fits to the sound. Which is most people -.- All that a-hole stuff aside, the music AND visuals/video are produced well and are “good content”. I really don’t understand the lack of subscribers and the ratio of upvotes/downvotes. Especially on “Cursed”. Much respect from a USA citizen, and one who doesn’t listen to country but knows what good country music is (because I play music? 🤷🏻♂️)
@@YeOldeBag Thank you for your time! I really appreciate your feedback. I've never thought about the name SUPERSCUM. People seem to like it.. or at least don't care about it... We all come from a Progressive Rock / Metal Background. And I guess this is how it sounds, when 4 metal-guys meet a country vocalist. Thank you and have a great day! - Peter & SUPERSCUM
Back in the 70s Kansas put up a sign “Free Booze” to promote a concert where they served free booze. It worked in their case. But they still had a lot of hard work to do.
THE PARTY IS OVER for the music industry. This will take about ten years and he didn’t mention the major labels you will be competing against who control the playlists and dominate the market. There are to many people writing music. 100,000 on universals spinnup alone. The only person making money from this is management. Thats why you have so many music producers on UA-cam trying to make money on UA-cam instead of producing music. There is no money on recorded music only if your with a major label as they own this space. The industry has de valued music by tell young people they don’t have to pay for it so it has no value. Which was pretty stupid. The long term effects of this are still unfolding. Only 6% of people attend music festivals for the music, this was in the economist this month.
Jim Laslett how do you suppose us creators go about making a living off what we do. For example, should we focus on writing, producing, our entire project ourselves? Or have a small team of individuals on an independent label without signing to a major label?
Patrick Brizard whatever you are selling you will need a budget to market it. The problem with music is it’s not worth much so you need to sell shit loads unless your doing a specific film score for a one off payment.
Patrick Brizard Ed Sheeran makes the least money from recorded music and the most from merchandise and ticket sales, his marketing team are not selling his music they are selling Ed sheeran and there is probably a five hundred people behind him
So in other words, become a brand and let the music market your brand. Than, if your goal is to do shows and sell merch, the music just helps for people to notice you.
Great advice ; Gary V also talks about the ‘single’ is not actually the ‘main thing’..it’s about all the little pieces of content that go along with the main attraction
You have said a few times that with just a few quid you can promote yourself and get people to hear your song. But I don't have a clue where and how to spend that money to maximum effect. As I am not adept with socials, a video about that would be of great help.
Great video Damo! I am currently pre-paring a release for a single and you're my go to for research and finding ideas to break the mold. Brilliant. Keep it up!
Another great vid👍. Your answering questions I’ve had for a long time now and I can’t thank you enough. I’m going to try implementing your strategies within the next few months with regards to releasing a single a month. Without this channel I’d be still so lost. Cheers!
Releasing single in a month (I've put some songs here on UA-cam but this will be a proper single with it's own videoclip and with proper mix and master), and I found the contect of the video very valuable. I'm already planning content and strategies for before and after as long as more realeases on the upcoming months, that will make a musical journey... Thanx for sharing tips!
8:20 - The four points of persuasion - Attention, interest, desire, action. Attention is just the first part. This is really excellent stuff. Thank you Damien. These lessons of your are true gems. (May I ask where specifically your accent is from?)
Very good points my man! I have been learning more and more about the strategy upon a soft release. I know I have been developing a plan and saving some $$$ for a marketing budget. But trying to figure what to do or where to spend the $$$ is the struggle. In addition to acquiring said funds as well. 😝
This "long game" mentality really makes sense, and thinking back, it's something I've been doing LONG before I started writing music and even thinking about performing. But, all those Open Mics, where I was just shaking hands with the artists, resharing local artists' events on Facebook, etc...it's all coming back to me ten-fold.
Thanks again Damian, forever helping people understand more and more each day. If anyone from the uk wants to have a chat about how their projects going and get to know someone like minded please let me know:)

Great advice not just for musicians but for any creator really.
true
sadly music is not music anymore. it became "content" as well.
What's so sad about that lol I smell elitist/gatekeeper
There's nothing to be sad about progression.
Any creator? That’s a bit of a sweeping generalisation
Jim Laslett a little ignorant; most modern productions are relatable
Content is king and context is the kingdom. I am quoting you in the future.

Great video! I just put out a new single “I Think We Should Date” by Matt Mulholland. I’m stoked with how it’s going on Spotify!
This is another really great video! Thank you!
So basically you’re saying to grind.
/\ This person gets it
The party metaphor is very good and easy to understand !
Thanks for these advices :)
From 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬. New song out next week . Gimme My Money by Clido
Great video man! New subscriber here for sure! Also thanks for offering to let us punt our singles. Just released one a few days ago called ‘Dead & Stranded’...
I’m a small artist and don’t have a dream of being a rock star, but love to share my music and this insight will help me do so more effectively!
Damian Hello. Your metaphor is so relevant. Thanks a lot for such an amazing video my friend 👍👍👍
Which is most people -.-
All that a-hole stuff aside, the music AND visuals/video are produced well and are “good content”.

@Lopyt *Sir_Guy* Thanks for your comments in our videos. I hope it didn't suck... Even though it wasn't Grindcore! hah!
Thank you!
2:48 ha! never seen that effect before. Well, maybe?, but not with beer. Nice. It was worth a replay
It's hard to take anything you say serious after that intro.
borny hitch wHat intro?
@@coldhardtruth333 Intro = Beginning of the video. Doh.
then don't, it's not like he's holding a gun to your head
@@AizenIPlannedIt And nobody said nor did they even think that. SO why do you even write that? It's so basic thinking d00de. Level up brah
Patrick Brizard Patrick Brizard hi Patrick it really depends on exactly what your trying to sell? Songs? Film scores? Lift music?
Patrick Brizard whatever you are selling you will need a budget to market it. The problem with music is it’s not worth much so you need to sell shit loads unless your doing a specific film score for a one off payment.
Patrick Brizard Ed Sheeran makes the least money from recorded music and the most from merchandise and ticket sales, his marketing team are not selling his music they are selling Ed sheeran and there is probably a five hundred people behind him
So in other words, become a brand and let the music market your brand. Than, if your goal is to do shows and sell merch, the music just helps for people to notice you.
Really grateful that you shared this. Love your supportive outlook!
"best ways to release a single in 2019!" Post it on Soundcloud and "see what happens".
This was freaking incredible! Im excited to execute the wealth of information shared in this video! Thank you Damian
Thank you! Super good info, probably gonna watch all your videos now :D
Great advice and perfectly explained.
Great channel too.
Great video man!!! You put a lot of information into a very concise and easy to understand process. The party analogy was spot on!!
Love it! Great advice
Great advice ; Gary V also talks about the ‘single’ is not actually the ‘main thing’..it’s about all the little pieces of content that go along with the main attraction
You’re amazing! Great content. Has given me some new ideas as well! Though I’m more a rap solo artist than a band respectively. Thanks so much!
Great advise... So spot on! Thanks for putting this out.
Getting a lot from your vidoes! And will be following these steps before releasing my next single in a few months. All makes sense! Cheers!
Very good points my man! I have been learning more and more about the strategy upon a soft release. I know I have been developing a plan and saving some $$$ for a marketing budget. But trying to figure what to do or where to spend the $$$ is the struggle. In addition to acquiring said funds as well. 😝
I'll be dropping my single in a couple weeks. Thanks for this video
This came out at the perfect time! Just starting to plan for my next release now! Thanks for your insight Damian!
+Jeffrey Chan good luck with it Jeffrey 😊😊😊
This "long game" mentality really makes sense, and thinking back, it's something I've been doing LONG before I started writing music and even thinking about performing. But, all those Open Mics, where I was just shaking hands with the artists, resharing local artists' events on Facebook, etc...it's all coming back to me ten-fold.
Thanks again Damian, forever helping people understand more and more each day. If anyone from the uk wants to have a chat about how their projects going and get to know someone like minded please let me know:)
wow, this is golden. thank you for sharing this brilliant yet practical advice. New subscriber here
Nice ideas 💡 thanks
Hello Damian! I admire and value your knowledge, and your videos are just awesome! Our band will release our first originals album next week. When it comes out I'll email you with a link and some info. Great video as always!!
Great content really empowering. Continue the great work.
This is really cool content. thanks Damian, very helpful!
Dude, this is one of the best videos I have found on the topic!
Thanks for the awesome content, Damian!
This was such a helpful video. I’ve got a single right now that I have not released anything for. I’m going to work on the marketing around this release rather than just releasing it and being done with it.
Thank you mate!! Extremely humble of you to echo your magnanimity with meaning for others!!! Cheers brother!
