Hi, thank you for the info. I have been a musician my whole life and it's never gone anywhere really. I recently revived an old project called Market Zero and I am taking notes on your channel
Thank you for doing what you do! You're awesome. You think we'd have it easy. We played twice a week with a venue that has a built-in audience. But it is still difficult for us to build true fans just by playing music. During our breaks we have to go out into the audience and try to build connections with people. Really music isn't just about music. Your videos of helped us build a fan base for a tricky genre of Music. Thank you Damian!!
We are obsessed with your channel. My 14 and 12 year old girls have been professional musicians for about 3 years now,. As a mom, manager, and their educator, I have appreciated all the conversations these videos have prompted regarding improving our brand image, skill development, and our connection to our fans, Seriously grateful. You make all these topics so interesting. Thank you for the daily inspiration. I hope our paths cross in the future so I can shake your hand!
After every follow on Instagram. I started sending personal messages thanking them. I was amazed at how many people want to be engaged. It makes such a difference in the connection.
I'd been desperately looking for a video like this. As a marketing graduate myself I'm aware of the AIDA model but translating it into my product as a public figure/musician has been a challenge. Thank you Damian!
Hi Damien, your video really helped focus my mind on building connections. It's easy to ignore what's sitting under our noses. Thanks for Stop Selling Music as well. All the best, Sean
We were very poor at stage 1 getting reach, but what we used to do at random times was invite a random fan to a rehearsal session allowing some one on one interaction with us and also sit in on a session and experience what goes on behind the scenes.
What an amazing story. Really important to remember that in our fan communities, its important that our fans need us as much as we need them. Make them feel special and cared about, and they will make us feel special. Damo, another great video as always. Thanks man! This story definitely is one of taking this idea to the max. Have any ideas for ways that we could make our fans feel just as special in smaller ways? Want it to feel authentic still.
Awesome. We will be thinking about how to do this with fans. We've done a bit of it with bands that are in the area by featuring them on videos and even interviewing some of them. Many of our fans are in other bands, and that turns into more gigs. Thanks for the tips Damo!
I love when I watch your vids and I know it's a fact at what your saying because I've applied this in my prior business. Good vid, to all the nay Sayers, damo has the goods!! PS enjoying your book bud, it's right down to my train of thought, enacting it a little harder for me. Need to get my head out of the way and act✌️🤘
Hey Damian, thanks for talking about my Arkells story in this video! Such a great way to create a legacy as a band. If anyone's interested, I've got some original music and covers (including an Arkells cover) up on my channel. I'd love to chat with some more of you! -John
Thanks. One thing I do is searching Spotify for user playlists that our songs would fit on. Sometimes have to google the users to find contact info. So I found this woman with a playlist with a few hundred followers (she didn’t even know she had followers) and long story short: her little kids became fans. So we recorded a video of an unreleased song, dedicated it to those two little kids. They couldn’t believe their ears that the band in the video was mentioning them by name. Turned them into super-fans maybe but of course also their parents :-)
Arkells are quality Canadian content! Worked with them years ago and they're going stronger than ever! Continuously growing! If you're enjoying Canadian rock bands we hope you give us a listen ! Always enjoying all you have to share Damian! Cheers!
Hey Damian, thanks for this video and the others. Could you provide some different examples (besides The Arkells) of how to build a fan base for artists trying to build from nothing or from very little? It is very difficult and slow. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers Damo, nice vid again. I do a live stream every couple of weeks and get the audience to write my set list, and challenge me to play a cover I've never played before. I'd still like to do more though, so I'll get my thinking cap on!
Yes! I've got a bigger fanbase in America than in my own country (UK) you just need to target them more on social media and more importantly making friends with them.
Im addicted to your videos. Reallt helpful, your communications skills are simply amazing, you connect to people so quickly and advices are really valuable. Thank you Damo. Subscribed and like all the videos so far. Kisses from little african country of Cape Verde
Thanks man. I'm really gonna try and stay focused on this for the next thirty days. Next year will be big for me! I can feel it! Just got to put in the work!
Nice job. You always have ACTUAL content. There are many that are just putting up click, which is fine, but then have zero content that is usable for us, the audience. Thank you sir
Very clever video Damo, thank you! I love the word legacy it’s not used enough and it’s one of the main reasons I do my music and engage with my audience!
100% Spot on. Treat people well and they'll support you through thick and thin. I'm lucky I learnt early on that engaging with fans at a level where they feel special (They are special) is key. I've even made real friends with some of these people along the way, an added bonus. Yeh the numbers aren't huge. But they're big enough however, I crowdfunded two albums, created a video made up entirely of fan clips sent to me, had a guy up on stage with me who had been engaging with me from the off, a guy travelled 200 miles to my album launch!! That matters! I can name so many of the those fans who supported me individually. I will make sure to see them at a gig and chat. I actually enjoy that and value it hugely. This is after all the age of social media. Be social, talk to people you never know where it can lead. I did all this with very little budget, use your imagination and engage, oh and have the songs too obviously ;) Nice one again Damo. x
Hey Damian, you are gaining alot of Adam Ivy fan base. Myself included. He hasn't posted videos in over a month. Thanks for the motivation brotha. Consistency is key.
Hey Damian, this is amazing advice if I had discovered your channel post covid. Loving your content and am looking forward to applying these methods once I get a band started
Yes Damian, you are completely right... Thank you so much for this valuable content. This is so constructive and positive. Simply by making good to others. Relation at the end is not only communicate with other it is also by really sharing a valuable moment or experience. I really like this one.
It's so funny that you mentioned the Arkells! I went to the same uni as them a couple of years after they graduated. They REALLY know how to market themselves as hometown, local Canadian boys. Everyone at our school eats them up. I've seen them walking around the area too and they always stop for a pic and to say hello. They also always seem to remember me even though I've only met them a few times - making me feel really appreciated. They've really exploded here in Canada over the past couple of years just because they're the nicest guys.
Got the player for my band. Went to play overseas together, performed at the radio. Not a single mention of a band, but lots of posts of him alone at the gig, at the radio station, giving away his band's merch for free after gigs while we were trying to sell ours. Legacy? Don't know. All I know is as good as the guy is at his instrument - he is out of my business. At first I was so angry, but now it's just funny to remember.
First of all I wanna say thank you for your Video. But I always have one big question - all these Videos are for Musicians and Bands performing live, producing and releasing their new stuff and trying to build their "superfanbase". How is it for Artists like me, composing and producing Filmmusic. Honestly I released my first Video with my music 2 weeks ago - people shared it, liked it and I build a small base to go on. 1100 Views in 2 Weeks are incredible for me and gives me a feeling that my music is appreciated! But what's next? I can't perform with a huge Orchestra at Vienna Concerthouse ;) So do you have any tips for Filmmusicproducers? Thanks a lot
You bring up some great point although i think it will take more than 30 days to create a legacy or super fan you can for sure start building a fan base sooner than later.
This is the first video of yours I've watched and I loved it! Thanks for the advice. Me and my new band unit 48 are pretty much just starting out and I think your advice will help us on our way so thank you 😊
How is it possible that your hit rate for creating level 99 god mode ON content is close to a 100%? this is GOLD sir! yup just another unbelievably AWESOME video worth it's weight in gold! ty for the upload.
One very powerful thing you can do is to build your own 'Media Platform' and distribute your content/podcast/music/meta content across the web on social media sites, but having that original source is a critical part of this. Damian offers some great insights and approaches, but as a web geek I offer you this very foundational concept.
Another thought-provoking vid ... thinking outside the box to go above and beyond to augment the audience experience ... make them feel special. Now let me take off this box... 🙂
Wise words of advice indeed!👍🌹 I'm actually trying to create a stir by just putting up posters saying 'coming soon' and I have a fairly unique logo (not my pic here) that I use which always grabs people's attention anyways, so this way it creates a bit of a stir and a curiosity. I love the idea too of bringing somebody else new and upcoming someone who's worked real hard, maybe someone is not being heard enough, getting them to open or getting them to come and play a couple of their tunes. I'm always a fan of audience and fan-based participation. After all, we are all fans of someone, so ask yourself how you would like to be treated by your favs😉💜
Great advice Damian! From putting myself out there *once* via an Instagram DM, others have noticed my playing, so when they say, "Hey, Rob. I'd like to try having cello/violin/uke on a couple of my tunes, what do ya think?", I say yes. My gig offers, recording jobs, and teaching have all grown because of these little interactions, and we get to share fanbases everytime I show up at a colleague's gig to play a song or two.

Hi Damian. My band is really starting to record good stuff but we are all in our mid 30s. Is it too late to push our music out there to try and make it? Is mid 30s too old to make it in music these days? Would love to hear your opinion on it. Thanks.

Damian, love your videos. They have given a ton of insight about turning your audience into fans. After watching this video, I’m a little stumped and maybe you can help me. What kinds of things can you do for a band at smaller level? The band you mentioned in the video has social presence already and someone asked to play with them, so they let him. That makes complete sense. I’m not sure if my question makes sense, but I would love your input. Thanks, Brandon.
Great advise! I've done this in the past without realizing that I was creating legacy. But now that I realize the impact that it can have, I'll be sure to apply it regularly. Thx 🙏
damo ive put this stuff into practice today ,along with some other videos of yours , realy went for it and guess wot ,the results are amazing ,the jayebbyeast fanclub on fb is pippin at the moment ,just like to say thank you x
You are just brilliant- just discovered your channel and blew me away. Amazing / interesting vids. Liked the one on tips for rehearsals. Simply awesome.
Very insightful. I'd just like to add though, that genuine interest in the fanbase also goes a long way. These tips are great, but you shouldn't get too wrapped up in the strategy of it all and forget to genuinely appreaciate and respect your fans' passion, without judgment, cause those fans will be able to sens it if you're manipulating them into feeling a bond with you that is ultimately fake and born only out of your self interest. Speaking from the perspective of someone who's part of arguably the most engaged music fanbase on the planet right now, genuine mutual respect is key. There's a vast difference between making them feel special because you actually care about how THEY feel VS. making them feel special because you know it'll help you gain their interest.
