    This movie has been slept on for decades. Definitely deserves wider recognition outside of being a cult classic. The dark humour, the infinitely quotable dialogue, the performances from the leading ladies, hell even Bruce Willis is actually "acting" here and isn't playing Bruce Willis or a McClane knockoff. An absolute gem!

      I’d even argue that it’s significant for commenting on what society does to women. They might’ve actually been genuine friends in another context but because of pressure of society and specifically the pressure of conforming to traditional standards of what is considered beautiful they’ve both been driven to do incredibly unhealthy things, both physically and mentally. They’ve been driven to hate each other out of competition for mens and society at large’s attention. They’ve literally been driven to kill. I’d say the “potion” is a metaphor for plastic surgery and at the end of the movie when their bodies have decayed and they’ve spent decades painting each other they no longer look human and represents that point where women have so much plastic surgery that they do not look like themselves anymore. I look at someone like Madonna and I feel sad. She claims she doesn’t care about what people think and will do what she wants, but I see someone who cares immensely what other people think. She desires so much to remain relevant and remain young and remain todays standard for ideal feminine beauty that she’s drastically altered her appearance to the point that she no longer resembles who she used to be. If she truly didn’t care about others opinions and was truly not affected by society’s demands for beauty she wouldn’t have had any work done. This movie is an important cautionary tale, that shows what happens when society and men specifically destroy women, their self esteem, and pit them against each other.

      They’re great even now. The reason is they’re using about six or seven different techniques so when you think you’ve got one worked out, they switch to another. There’s CGI, makeup, prosthetics, puppets, body doubles, optical effects, animation and green screen all being used here in conjunction with each other.
      Oh, and just good acting too! There’s no special effects with Meryl’s head falling forward and her having to hold it up, she’s just acting!

    This movie reminds me of my grandfather.
    Back when I was a kid in elementary school, I saw this movie on TV. Not full but just some scenes including this scene. Because it was late night and I had to sleep.
    Since English isn't our primary language, I asked him what the meaning of the title is. I also ask any words in English I saw on TV. Then he explained it all to me. Among other grandchildren, I was the curious one. Thankfully he was a teacher so it wasn't a big problem.
    And then he passed away when I was in 4th grade. Sometimes I missed him. I want to meet him in my dream. I had so much stories to tell about.
    Sorry for long comment.

      It always troubled me. The plot is interesting and I think it holds it's own. But however it's convoluted by the jumbled mess of um.. well, everything else. Shame 🙄. I would pay money for different scenario with this potion and immortality thing as key role

    Hearing Alan Silvestri's score in this movie is like it's straight out of a Tales from the Crypt episode, and what the remake of the Witches could've sound like. But this film is amazing and spookingly funny!

    • @OddOneOut665
      @OddOneOut665 Рік тому +4

      Funny you mention that, cuz this Film was originally conceived as an episode of Tales, but Zemeckis loved it so much, it turned into its' own thing.
      It was planned to be the first Tales film, but that went to Demon Knight instead.

      @@tonymata8070 Honestly, this movie and those other two you mentioned make for a much better TFTC Film Trilogy than the ones we got.
      (Demon Knight is still very solid, Bordello and Ritual are trash)

    • @tonymata8070
      @tonymata8070 Рік тому +1

      @@OddOneOut665 Bordello might be bad, but it’s stupid fun.
      Ritual…. not so much, I think if those films were Tales from the Crypt type of films then it would’ve been better received at the time.
