One thing that bugs me to this day is that Tess never apologized for ruining their mother’s dress knowing how much it meant to Jane.

For real! My mother passed away when my siblings and I were little and when my sister gets married next year, I've already told her we should discuss Mum's dress before anyone uses it (if anyone uses it---it's veerry 1980s). I can't imagine what I'd do if any of my siblings did what Tess did and then didn't apologize, sincerely.

The reason it’s a secret that Tess is paying Pedro to clean the apartment is because it kinda goes against what the big brother program is about. The whole reason Pedro is there.
Big brother/ big sister is about mentoring kids from underprivileged neighborhoods and showing them they can aspire to more in life. It’s encouraging and investing in their futures. Tess is supposed to be taking care of him while George is away.
The movie is suggesting that Pedro is from a neighborhood where the majority of his community ends up as maids and housekeepers. And while there is nothing wrong with that, it’s hard / honest work, most people in his community don’t get a lot of other opportunities. The program is supposed to be about changing that. If Pedro told George he was looking for after school work, George would have picked a business based on Pedro’s interests, and used his influence to get him a part time job where he could learn / see if this is what he wants to do someday.
So what Tess is doing is being part of the problem and undoing all of George’s good work. It’s also suggesting the reason she’s doing it is because she IS racial stereotyping as a privileged (spoiled) while woman. She heard Pedro is looking for work, she automatically thought housekeeper.
That’s why it’s bad. (And the movie is from the mid 2000s so it’s also commentary of the times/ in America/ with a lot of people immigrating from Mexico.)

Its also just the fact that he is working while others expect him to be getting to do things that are more fun or educational or such. He's a kid. She is an adult who's been left to watch him with certain expectations of care. Instead of meeting those agreed upon expectations she isn't doing the chores she is meant to do and instead getting the kid to do them, taking credit for the work done and for stepping up for him when she isnt, and she is getting the kid to lie with her about what they are doing while keeping whats actually happening a secret. Some kids end up in big brother big sister because they lack friends or connections such as family connections so having such surrogates make it something like this instead of socializing and getting the kid the chance to talk and be and have fun, it just isnt on.
@@krose6451 True! I guess I wasn’t thinking too much about the kid working vs kid playing / studying angle because I’m use to the 80s kids babysit/ mow lawns/ deliver papers era. Where kids as young as ten lookin for after school jobs around the neighborhood was pretty normalized/ expected. Before it was a common discourse about kids getting time to just be kids. So it didn’t occur to me 😬😂👍
Yeah i was in the program, we'd go fishing and bake cookies, i wasn't being a maid. I was a poor white kid with little friends.
I feel for the Dad, because his wife died and that sucks but now that I'm older he aggravates me. Tess is a nightmare, but this is also why you don't check out emotionally and let the 8-year-old attempt to parent for you. Maybe if he'd been a little more engaged Tess wouldn't have been such a brat and Jane would've grown up actually knowing how to set boundaries.

No part of her did I ever get “spoiled brat”. Her and George connection WAS real but she felt she had to be someone she wants to appeal to him more (hence why by the end of the film they didn’t have any hard feelings and implied to give it another shot ).
Yes the dad was wrong for making his daughter the new “mom “ in the house.
This! I love my mom so much, but she was a single mom so I was thrust into a parenting position as well. I know she didn't mean it, but now that I'm an adult I'm having to learn how to set boundaries. And she tries to say I was always a nurturer, which I don't doubt, but I also had a hard time saying 'no' to people until I went to therapy. Even now she gets upset when I set boundaries and assumes I'm saying she was a bad parent, but once she calms down she starts to understand what I mean. lol.

Maturity and being nurturing are good qualities for anyone to have, but I’ve observed that when someone under 10 has them there’s a story there.
This is one of my favorite movies ever, Katherine Heigl is so charismatic and the costume department gave 110% on making all of those bridesmaids dresses

@@samandmariachannel a lot of dresses were made by the designer DeBorah Rachelle. I think most of the outrageous dresses were handmade while the normal looking ones were probably store bought

I just read the trivia on imdb that they tried making them as outrageous as possible but had a hard time making them look bad because katherine heigl looked good in everything lol
One of my favorite insults in cinema: “That was yesterday. Today you're just some bitch who broke my heart and cut up my mother's wedding dress.”
That whole bridal shop scene just guts me. Tess stole everything precious to her sister. She took Jane’s entire dream wedding-a dream she’s had since she was a child-away from her, and even made her plan the damn thing.
But destroying the irreplaceable wedding dress…. Tess doesn’t deserve forgiveness for that. I’m coming at this from a few different perspectives.
First, I have great appreciation for antique clothing and any time someone damages a garment beyond repair I get very angry. Depending on the age of the garment, it’s entirely possible that the very techniques used to create the garment are no longer known. There are thousands of long lost clothing techniques throughout history. Ways things were layered, sewn, cut, detailed, plated, etc. Especially anything pre-industrial revolution. Or anything specifically crafted for one person’s body. I know the wedding dress in question wasn’t a historical antique yet, but that’s where my other perspective comes in.
Second, if the irreplaceable garment belongs to a deceased person and is purposely damaged I will go feral on the person who did the damage. Especially if the garment was handmade by the deceased or their family member, or was special to the deceased in a specific way.
My great-grandmother was a seamstress and she left behind so many unique and incredibly crafted pieces of clothing. Hats, scarves, dresses, suits, etc, from the early 1920s all the way into the 2000s. She made her own clothes, her daughter’s clothes, all four of her granddaughters’ special event outfits-most notably all my mother’s pageant gowns-and my christening gown. She never had a wedding dress. She got married in her best Sunday suit, which unfortunately was lost a long time ago. As it became a hand-me-down to her niece. But even imagining someone purposely destroying any of her work makes me livid.
And lastly, anyone who would destroy an heirloom wedding dress is vile. Period. It doesn’t matter if it means nothing to you. It means something to someone else. Either the person who gave it to you, or your sibling, or a relative. There is a reason wedding dresses become heirlooms. And any bride who can be so disrespectful of that beloved legacy deserves to have the “redone” dress absolutely trashed in front of their eyes right before their wedding. They can walk down the aisle in shreds.
This... this whole thing, the fact that the movie never makes Tess atone for that and almost makes it Jane's fault is so aggravating. I also think the most aggravating is what she ended up doing could have been done without completely destroying the dress. She used like a triangle of the lace and maybe 2 inches for the belt. A good seamstress could have found a way to take some fabric from the moms dress without shredding it to ribbons. Tess could have made that clear that she wanted the dress intact for her sister just use a small bit of fabric for accents to her own dress. It was so unnecessary.
I care so much about preserving such clothes both for historical value and sentimental but even if the dress was something not very old and a dime a dozen that hadnt belonged to their mother, this is a thing she knew her sister cared about and still destroyed it. I kind of wish this was the sort of movie embracing that you dont always really need certain people in your life or in it in meaningful ways and instead of outing her at the wedding shower it was just, "yeah no Im done. Im not gonna be your bridesmaid." And later Tess wasn't hers, and we saw she'd taken a big step back from her sister. Cause honestly, Im not sure even losing her sister would be enough to for Tess to fully wake up, reflect, and do the work to improve herself. Maybe some years down the road but it would take time and probably a few more things for it to really hit home.
@@krose6451 I’m with you. I despise Tess and it infuriated me that after everything she did Jane was the one who did the apologizing and Jane was the one who got punished. I’d have been so happy not to see Tess at Jane’s wedding.
@@jennafer2327 Tess is actually wearing their mother’s wedding dress in front of the mirror. It’s butchered into a completely different silhouette, but that’s the dress. What’s on the chair is what’s left of the dress…the lace and some trim and scraps of fabric.
Jane recognizes what’s left of the gown she cherishes and that’s what sets her off. Rightfully so. Tess didn’t just cut up the dress and use a couple pieces. She completely destroyed the original design of the dress to make her trashy slip version.
Love the Judy Greer appreciation. She’s the ‘always the bridesmaid’ of noughties rom coms, as the witty sidekick, and made it her niche. You should react to all her rom coms.
Now it seems she's getting to go beyond that niche, though I worry she's getting type cast as a mom instead.
part of the reason the way she treats pedro is bad is because some white americans see latinos, especially mexicans, as maids and gardeners.... people to take care of your home

In America we know that shag means what you said it means but we don’t use it that way. In the 1960’s there was a popular dance called The Shag - there’s actually a movie called Shag and it’s about the dance…not what you’re thinking 😅

I think the biggest problem with Pedro being a “cleaner” is the fact that in the US, Hispanic people are often stereotyped as “maids” who are exploited for minimum wage - similarly to the Black African-Americans in the 19th century. And let’s be honest, Tess was never going to help him start a cleaning business, she was just lazy.

Unfortunately most romcoms are made by/for streaming services these days. I think some good ones make it out but they dont get the traction theatre then tv would give them to get word around and be discovered

Love this movie! It was one of mine & my friend’s favorites in our college days. Katherine truly ruled that era of romcoms. It was also one the first movies I saw James Marsden without his Cyclops eyepiece & realized how charming he was 😆
The Bennie & the Jets bar scene is so iconic. Also, ever since watching this movie, at any wedding I attend I always make sure to look at the groom when the bride walks down the aisle.
I can’t see James the same since watching the “Quiet on set” documentary. And not in a good way

@@echowall5967 It's an absolutely awful situation that happened. I felt so bad for Drake Bell. No one should've gone through that (I would know). While some of the supporters absolutely knew what was happening (the two producers who later rehired him), I certainly know there must be some people who absolutely regretted it. James seems like a kind person (but I guess you never know) and he's had no bad scandals and I know he also first met Peck as a teen, so I hope that he absolutely is ashamed, too. And that he's regretted it and knows better after 20 years. Bell did say that the whole situation was full of misinfo and that Peck was a great manipulator. But idk, I've def lost respect. I'm glad Bell feels like the weight is off his chest but he was still done an absolute injustice especially since Peck got out. Glad he's found something in music, though. He deserves all the apologies now. Even if before part of why he didn't get them was because they didn't know his identity (it was hidden).
I have such a love/hate relationship with this movie - like it makes me so unbelievably angry, but its also great lol. The Ugly Truth is another great one with Katherine Heigl that would be fun to react to if you guys ever feel up to it!

I love this movie so much. You just feel for poor Jane throughout. Granted she does make a bit of a rod for her own back but childhood loss really shapes you.
Only criticism is how quickly Tess turned round. One minute she's ridiculously self centered and out of touch. The next she actually ends up counselling Jane and giving her the advice she needed for so long. I wish we had seen a flicker of this before just to make it more believable...

The issue they were potraying with pedro stems from when she said hola pedro.....so having him ckean georges place is insinuating being a servant is the only kind of job he is good for based on racial stereotypes and they are mad at tess for putting him in that box
as someone who was too scared to allow himself to do anything and who only now starts to actively go towards my dream job despite everything that could come with it, it is pretty accurate that parts of her just assumes her wedding will happen someday. When you're constantly surrounded by people who live your dream (for me it's exposure from the internet, for her it's planning everyone elses wedding), the fact that it will happen to you someday becomes obvious but the way there is not in your mind because you get lost in the daily routine of needing to be there for everyone else and being too afraid to put your foot through the door because it feels ike something you're not allowed to do puts you in this wierd position where your distant future self lives your dream, your today self hopes it'll happen someday and the you in the middle that'll make it happen either lives exactly like you do because that's all you know, or is the most vague looking void ever
I agree. I would also add that she was pining over her boss, and she waited too much to let him know her feelings. If she had confess earlier maybe she could move on.
I really enjoy this movie. I just don't see how Jane having so many bridesmaids dresses is considered to be a bad thing or even pathetic. Also, you should try "One for the Money" with Katherine Heigl as well. Another of my favorites.

I have no idea why my brain got held up on this but it did. Maybe it the ad break hadn't kicked in it wouldnt have but it did so here I am leaving a rather stupid comment. Next I think you should do the movie "Happy Thank You, More Please." It has the same actress as the little sister in this movie. Just in a completely different role. I think it makes for a very good commentary as well I think you both would enjoy this film. Just a suggestion. This like one of my favourite movies 🩷and also I think one of Katherine Heigl’s best movies 😊 I love the story and the humour but plus James Marsden looks mighty Fine 😍 and also Tess really annoyed me and that was so selfish of her to ruin there mother’s dress especially when she knew Jane wanted to wear it 🙄but I’m glad she learns her lesson at the end I guess. I’m so happy Jane got her happily ever after with Kevin ❤and that all the bridesmaids were there for her like she was for them thanks for doing this Sam and Maria can’t wait for the next movie you do 😊😃😁

I’m not a huge fan of the idea of weddings, specially traditional ones like here, I don’t get it. A lot of the traditions come from very antiquated and awful beliefs (like the father ‘giving away’ his daughter to another man ugh 😖), and it doesn’t help that a lot of these things don’t even happen in my country at all (we don’t have the concept of bridesmaids). BUT still I genuinely like this movie and have a lot of fun watching it. I really like the character of Jane, how her personality makes sense and how she grows through the movie. I wish Katherine Heigl still was getting parts because she is really good. And obviously this was the time we’re James Marsters was everywhere, and he is just perfect for the part.

I always loved 27 Dresses, but ever since i watched the Quiet on Set documentary and saw a letter of James Marsden defending a child molester (Brian Peck) destroyed this and other movies with him in it for me..
And even now he chooses to lay low and stay silent instead of apologizing to the victim Drake Bell.
He doesn't even need to do it publicly, others reached out to Bell in private and he told everyone through Social Media. Showing remorse and how he feels ashamed for what James Marsden did back then is the least he could do.
