You forgot that at a certain point, cell phones continued to get smaller and smaller. The technological challenge was to create the smallest possible cell phone which culminated in the Zanco Tiny T1 (1.8" x 0.82"). Then the 'fablet' phenomenon struck and everything started to grow exponentially larger. At this point, I expect to see people traveling around with a pocket projector that can be used against any flat surface. No need to carry around a piece of hardware with a fixed glass display anymore. Just bust out your pocket projector and proudly display all your information whenever and wherever. Privacy be damned... Although, I could personally due without a cell phone for the rest of my life. I only have one because of my aging parents that _insist_ on traveling despite their advanced age/health. Getting back on topic... I also tend to think that these enclosed emitter optics are too big for their intended purpose. They all remind me of an old tube tv or mailbox sitting on top of your pistol. Which, in my humble opinion, detracts from your overall situational awareness. Stay classy my friends.
Cell phones continue to get larger due to battery needs / limitations. The good thing about these things being red dots, too, is you still keep both eyes open to use them. So there’s no loss of vision or situational awareness.

@@PolenarTactical You'd think it would be common sense, a closed system would prevent a problem from happening, but people get bent out shape on brand loyalty instead of recognizing its better to remove the potential problem from your gear so that you're that much better off than you were before. You should do a video on the topic, hell, you can even demonstrate it having someone use a spray bottle on stream mode sprayed over top of you for a quick kindergarten explanation of what starburst effect and how glass can get obscured from a open system making sighting hard when you need it.
@@Slay_No_More I've had a single raindrop hit my emitter during a match, which made me very grateful for the backup iron, after a couple of shot the recoil cleared the dot enough for me to continue with it. However, the issue isn't brand loyalty, closed or opened emitter optic, the issue is people who sit in their couches with sheepdog t-shirts who go to an indoor range maybe once a year thinking they can only use optics that will survive the SageDyanmic drop test and have closed emitter optics that can be deployed immediately after a mile crawl through mud, and overnight, started trash talking opened emitter optics because they watched a few UA-cam videos.
All of my pistol red dots at this point are open emitter. I took a two day pistol course with Kyle Lamb where it started raining midway through day one. Of the 12 of us only 1 had a closed emitter red dot. All of us with open emitters were jealous of him a few minutes into that rain. There’s an argument that for concealed carry it won’t matter, and I think there’s some truth to that. A typical defensive shooting likely won’t go long enough to see water accumulate by the emitter and then affect the projected dot in the time from when the pistol is taken out of concealment. But even I was surprised at really how quickly the nice emitter became a mess of red on my lens. Couple that with the fogging on the lens many of us saw (and this is an argument for using Cat Crap anti-fog), and we really were struggling. I tried switching to irons as mine could cowitness, but even that wasn’t easy. My Safariland RDS holster did help when the pistol was holstered. I think we’re already seeing closed emitters get somewhat smaller (front to back of the optic) with the Holosun EPS. I’ll be interested to see how this evolves over time. The bulk is something that turns off a number of people that conceal and those same people won’t see the advantages materialize as much given that their optic isn’t as exposed as say in a duty rig. There are also many open emitter red dots already out there (large install base to switch over) and many pistols are cut for an RMR pattern and to my knowledge there isn’t an open emitter that fits that pattern. I think all of this means open emitters will be around for a long time.

Similar happened to me recently, shot a USPSA match and got rained on. Everyone was putting baggies and shit over their holsters w open emitters. My irons remained unaffected. If there was some kind of Safariland style holsters that completely covers the dot with some kind of flip cover, that could solve the issue maybe
Snow has also proved to be an issue, especially large flakes around melting temperature with some wind. It takes one well placed flake to fly in on on the unprotected reflective lens and suddenly I have 10 dots instead of 1.
I have been testing the vulkan reticle in a 507c for about 3 months now and shot it in a few USPSA matches and I think the circle reticle has more utility than most people give it credit for. When incorporating movement into shooting, while potentially also going from compressed ready to full extension etc, it has increased my average speed and consistency from a competition standpoint, as well as average draw time, reload time (shot to shot) etc. I am an experienced dot shooter on pistols, and have zero issues finding the dot - but the circle can act as a reference point similar to irons where you can intuitively know exactly where the muzzle is pointed faster. It works similar to irons where as you are pressing out, or approaching a new shooting postion, quickly slowing down and starting to preaim at a target you can see the orientation of the irons in relation to the target and your mind knows it can break a shot before you have a full sight picture. It is kind of difficult to explain, but on a timer, my best times are about the same as a normal dot, but my maximum spread is lower as is the average time on particular drills. I also like the chevron for the exact reasons you stated.
@@shootinbruin3614 nope - that was actually my primary concern before I ordered it, but it is thin enough and large enough that although you do see it, it doesn't affect my ability to just watch the chevron bounce up and down in the A zone. Some guys with longer arms than me, and a grip with less bent elbows, might see it even less or not at all. I shot match with it last weekend (Placed 3/33) and I can't actually remember seeing the ring at all during any stage (obviously I physically saw it, but my concentration was solely on the targets and the chevron, so I can't remember seeing it.)
I agree it’s an excellent reticle. My initial dive into red dots on pistols was a Vortex Venom and I hated it. The dot worked fine but outside of standing slow fire I couldn’t get a fast accurate shot off and transitioning was terrible. I sold that and didn’t come back until I heard excellent reviews on the Vulcan reticle. For me it was a game changer. The learning curve is greatly reduced and after a few hours I had a noticeable increase in alignment with speed. I highly recommend it.
Well that’s sort of what happens overnight when companies like Holosun, Steiner, and Aimpoint release dots that are duty grade and have better feature sets than the RMR for similar or less money. It also helps that tons of pistol slides are optics ready now and just need a mounting plate, where before you needed milling and lead times
I bought 507C with this reticle specifically for NODs use after Sage Dynamics pointed out the HUD-like big circle reticle in the dark. It really is cool to try in person.
The newer 509ts actually have updated battery life in the manual. 50k for the dot and the same 20k for the circle and dot reticle. I thought that was interesting as the 50k was based on the dot only reticle.
Not sure why that's surprising, it's the same 2 MOA dot the other optics have. Why wouldn't it have the same 50k battery life based off dot only? It's not gonna magically gain a huge chunk of battery life.
I slapped a Romeo 2 on my P320 in the fully enclosed configuration. I'm actually pretty impressed with the optic. Even at 6MOA, the dot is so crisp it's like a perfect circle. I wanted to try the enclosed emitter due to living in North Dakota and the extreme amount of snow and/or dust I encounter regularly. I have noticed that it helps with concealed carry for the humidity factor. I recently pulled my P365 with a Romeo Zero Elite and the window was wet and foggy from sweat and humidity. I had been outside and went inside to an AC controlled environment and that's where the temperature difference came into play. Just my experience so far but maybe there is something to the closed emitter thing.
@@calholli that was definitely an issue with the earlier Romeos. But the 2 is at least on paper, at the next level of quality. Sage Dynamics put his seal of approval on it which is why I decided to try it. So far so good!
@@calholli Romeo 1 line products are Chinese in origin, Romeo2 is USA based hence the drastic increase in price...also I am not sure which Romeo products you have but some of them were known to be donkey and if you purchased them it's kinda on you. I specifically avoided them because I hadn't heard anything that made me think the larger form factor ones were a better purchase than a DPP or an SRO and their micro options are nothing compared to a RMRcc or a 407k.
I work security and the 509T and it is a great setup especially for duty use. There is a lot of debris that has gotten into the many holsters I have run over the years. I do prefer the Safariland 6300 series RDS holsters for this reason. It minimizes the amount of debris that tends to build up and the 509T is just easier to clean. I work outside in the elements and I'm glad that I went with a closed emitter for my primary duty sidearm.
I have the 507 green ACSS Vulcan mounted on my Canik Mete SFX thanks to an adapter plate from Patnik Solutions. Shot my first ever pistol match with it a few weeks ago. It was my first time ever shooting a pistol optic in general, too. The Vulcan reticle definitely helped me get a proper sight picture more quickly. Kind of like “pistol optic training wheels”. I had a lot of fun and will definitely compete again in the future. Great content as always, much love from Texas!
@@___meph___4547 oh man I really enjoy shooting mine! For whatever reason, Canik chose the mounting system to be a compact optics footprint like for the Shield RMSC and others. If you want to run a full size optic like something with the RMR footprint, you’ll need that adapter plate from Patnik Solutions. It’s very well machined out of metal and fits very snug. They’re about $60 on their website. Stock sights won’t co witness though since the plate is a bit thicker. Hope that helps!
@@lucasblanchard47 I thought the same thing too at first, the new Holosun EPS full size and carry size both have the Shield or "k" footprint The K footprint started on smaller optics but will redefine larger optics. The K footprint gives manufacturers a better ability to mount the optic. That is why it first appeared on smaller optics. The RMR or Holosun 507C footprint has design flaws that limit how manufacturers can mount optics, especially closed emitters.
My Gen 5 Glock 19 w/Gen 1 Trijicon RMR is still going strong even after ~1000 rounds. Keeps zero even after a battery change. Carried daily and I change the battery out once a year. No "shake to wake" or button to press to turn it on. It just stays on. Constantly. Forever. Like a tiny Eye of Sauron.
Shake awake is the most overrated accessory feature in the last decade. I swear people treat their gun purchases like buying electronics at Wal-Mart, where they think they’re getting a better deal because one box has a longer list of features than the other even though half of the features are flat out pointless.
I've been running the 507C with the ACSS reticle on my Glock 19 for about a year and I've loved shooting with it. The Chevron is awesome and the big circle definitely shortened the learning curve for red dot equipped handguns. My P365xl is my true daily carry, while the Glock 19 only gets carried when my wardrobe permits it. That being said, as a nightstand gun and a gun I dry fire and shoot a lot, I still haven't had to replace the battery. So while 20K hours is not as much as 50K, it is still a lot.
Chevron also does double duty by helping to improve clarity for certain kinds of astigmatisms, I certainly prefer a lot of those to plain Jane red dots for that reason
The Gen 5 MOS slides have the holes drilled in closer so they don’t interfere with the extractor plunger. Also, with the MOS cut and the included mounting plate from Primary Arms, the profile is nice and low so you can cowitness. I have one on my department issued G47. It works great.

Bunch of guys saying they've had issues with rmrs and yet i've ran rmr's in moon dust, snow and rain repetitively over years and have yet to have an emitter blocked. Fogged wet lenses, yes, but same thing happened on my aimpoints on long guns as well.
I have the 509T X2 and I love it. It's much easier to use than my Vortex Venom due to the square window. I purchased a direct mount plate for my Glock MOS from Holosun for like 29 bucks that lets the optic sit much lower than the RMR plate in the box. Great content as always.
I have the open emitter Holosun on a Beretta 1301 and the Vulcan reticule makes snapping from target to target really fast. I totally recommend it for shotgun use, that reticule is great.
Ive been shooting for a couple decades now. I never use any of that stuff on side arms. Just train on irons and you'll be able to pick up anything and shoot. Its just another thing to get hung up on stuff and to potentially fail. Then there are batteries etc. Im just not of all that. To be clear. I do use a light on tac rifles. That's the extent of my accessories.

I have a 507k and carry it every single day all day working construction operating equipment and Ill say that I have to clean it out every single day and it gets ridiculously dirty and blooms after a few hours of work. Can't wait for the eps carry so it's just dirty and no dirty and blurry

I have the MOS version and the mount is much better. It’s about half the weight and put let’s me use the same sights I used while running an rmr. I’m pretty sure the MOS version sits lower than yours. Anyway I have mine mounted on my Glock 19 and have been extremely happy with it. It is bigger than a regular 509t, but when compared directly you can see the only difference is length. Also it’s a LOT lighter! If I remember correctly the Vulcan with mount was about 75% of the weight of my 509t with mount. I love this reticle and think it would be even better on some of the smaller optics. The smaller the window, the more likely you’ll need that huge outer circle. Definitely recommend changing the battery at least every 3 months. But I’ll take that for the added benefits. Anyways, love the channel Also, I don’t think of it as a training aid, I think about it’s usefulness in awkward shooting positions.
i know a good number of people who aren’t “gun guys” who finally felt comfortable enough with a closed emitter to switch to pistol dots, i don’t think it’s entirely a shilled movement
Thank you for making this video. I've got my sights set on the Walther PDP which I've heard is a really good choice for pistol optics, but I'm a sucker for the closed frame optics. Might be an upgrade I'll look into once I get past finding those pricey full sized model mags.
I would argue that a closed emitter is more useful for concealed carry than open carry. I've used an open emitter on a full size pistol in pretty shitty weather and never had any issues, but my concealed carry 507k constantly filled with lint and I was having to clean it all the time because it was scattering the dot enough that I just had a red sheen obscuring my view. Since switching the the EPS Carry, I haven't had to de-lint my optic a single time
I just finished kitting out a new Sig P320 XTen and went with a 507C ACSS mostly because the 509 wasn't available in green which is my preference. I would have liked the enclosed emitter due to living in the desert but got a good deal on the 507 used, so here we are. Good stuff.

I've had the 509c with this same ACSS Vulcan reticle on my glock for about a year now and it is crystal clear for me and I have pretty bad astigmatism. I've used the chevron ranging feature up to 100 yards with good accuracy. Overall I love the reticle and it was a game changer for me with pistol shooting with astigmatism. Other red dots I've used on pistols and AR's starburst like hell and are rather annoying to look at, let alone shoot with.
Tip: if you have issues finding the dot. Once you have a proper grip, point (or whatever terminology you learned in class) and then point your thumbs at the target. I have found that most people find the dot right away with that trick. It also works with the Meprolight sight the P365 SAS has. If it works for you, please let me know and enjoy. If not, well at least you did not pay me for it. Please let me know if it doesn't work out for you as well.
I thought my RMR was absolutely fantastic for about 7 years or so, until i started carrying and shooting it outside these past 2 years. It rains a lot here and snows in winter. I have had my RMR (and rifle mounted offset Docter for that matter) fill up with either water or snow to the point of becoming unusable every single time i carried it outside in bad weather for any prolonged time. That is why I would like to switch to a closed emitter ❄️ ⛄️
At least let’s get down to just an open emitter footprint and a closed emitter footprint. Pistol red dot footprints are the wild fucking west. I just had a slide milled for this optic, it has an adapter plate with an RMR footprint that the optic then clamps onto. But my chosen machine shop milled the slide in such a way that an RMR fits, but the HE509 adapter plate doesn’t! I actually think they did a good job with the milling, it’s perfect for an RMR… but everybody just be aware that you can’t take any type of cross compatibility for granted in the pistol RDS market.
@@jonah8133 CH Precision. There are plenty of 509T milling options, haven’t found many for 509 ACSS. And I’m not sure I’d want to mill it for that even if I could. You’re locked into one optic permanently, I don’t predict anyone’s going to adopt the 509 ACSS footprint. 509T is already pretty niche.
@@JohnMaxGriffin Yeah it definitely does lock your slide into only being compatible with that optic. I think it's worth it though. I only run 509s and haven't looked back. There's zero benefit to running other optics. And I've seen a lot of places offer the ACSS cut now. Maple leaf, CH does too, Battle Werx, Wager Machine works and more
I run a 509t v2 on my M18 mounted to a C&H Precision plate with built in rear sight. To lower 1/3 co-witness through the glass of 509t on that specific plate, a .325 front sight is needed.
The most negative thing I saw in reviews online for it (I've been researching it hard, since the price point is so painful but I like the features) has been that the build QC seems to be lacking. A lot of people complaining about the 'glue' that the rear lens is secured with being poorly applied and even not sealing the unit from internal fogging. Looking at the rear of your unit, it appears to have some sketchy excess glue around that rear lens, but that could also just be the angle of the red dot to the camera/light source.
They're built in china. That's how they keep them cheaper than the US made optics. Chinese products skimp out on labor above all other things. Secondly the glass quality is nowhere near as durable as any of the leading US optics.
Ill say this just as the video starts: i love how i have the exact same gloves as Hop does without trying. Great minds think alike and they are really sweet gloves and good for shooting as a bonus.
They're cheap and get the job done. Everyone has a pair of Mechanix. They last forever too, so ten bucks every other year (or longer) is a bargain as opposed to guys wearing 100 dollar Oakley Operator Hobo Gloves made for motorcycles

For my first pistol dot sight, I’ve opted for the standard 509T. However I haven’t experienced it yet... still waiting for my gun store to open back up from an inventory catalog overhaul. I shipped my slide out through them for milling almost two months ago. I’ll basically have to relearn the whole gun once I get the thing back together.
7:07 is really the crux of the issue. If you have a bunch of RMRs, no reason to drop money to switch. But if you’re just now getting into the MRDS game, why not just get the closed emitter?
I was running a carbine class, and obviously, we spent some time shooting prone, below, and around baracades. During a transition from rifle to pistol, I noticed my red dot was no longer visible. Dirt had blocked the emitter temporarily, disabling the optic. The moral of the story is to get a closed emitter optic. we don't buy these tools for the 99%, but for the 1% of situations.
I’ve got a 507c and I get ready sweaty and dirty so I can have buildup of dirt and stuff sitting in the dot I carry at 3o’clock so I can see why you want a closed dot
The only real advantage of a closed emitter is better protection for the emitter itself and it's much easier to remove the dirt, dust, or frost that accumulates on the lens when you step from a heated car and into the sub-zero temperatures we have in winter. Other than that, they're identical in construction to an open-emitter. That's it. It's not even the same argument between a convertible or a sedan, because they have to reinforce the vehicle frame on a convertible. My agency is currently doing test and eval on three handgun reflex optics; the Holosun 509T, the Aimpoint Acro P2, and the "old stand-by" Trijicon RMR. The 509T has not been performing to expectations when compared to the Acro (I mean, come on, it wasn't going to). The RMR just keeps doing what it does, projecting a dot and catching every crumb that drops from your lunch. If people were actually using their equipment instead of just staring at it, they might figure out that it's always going to go in this order; whatever god-tier product Aimpoint makes, followed by those plucky Christians at Trijicon, and then whatever company in China isn't flooded or shut down due to pestilence.
Yes they're tall optics but because they're retained similarly to pic rails rather than screws drilled down vertically, you can actually get 509s to mount lower than RMRs
Hop, my night vision experience, 507 acss vs 509 acss, is quite different from yours. I have both currently, so I compared them side by side. I had high hopes for moving to closed emitter... But my 509 reticle doesn't get as dim in NV as the 507. In addition, the second pane of glass cuts down on light transmission through the optic. These 2 issues separately are not huge issues, but when stacked together, have me swapping back to my 507 acss. It's hard to see anything through the window because it's dim, and anything you can see is blown out by the reticle. In addition, I get ghosting of the reticle depending on my backlighting (I'll see multiple faint Vulcan reticles off center through the window). Testing is with L3 pvs14 and elbit xlsh 2500 duals under a large variety of lighting conditions for the last 2 months.
That's what I be saying. Alot of these numb nuts call it a training aid. It's easy more than that like you pointed out. There are situations where you can't gonna be perfectly squared off with your attacker.

Timely video. Thanks Hop. Yeah, my last two "red dots" were HOLOSUN 509T for a 5.7 x 28 pistol and HOLOSUN AEMS for my 9 mm RUGER PC chassis carbine. IMHO the AEMS is THE best carbine "red dot" (circle/dot). I'm done with open emitters. ->Even my "old" gen. 2 FN PS90 has a pretty tough Vortex SPARC II red dot tube sight. This was before good closed emitter sights were on the market. It's mounted on an aftermarket VERY low Pic rail to put the sight in perfect alignment with my eye. But hey, at least it's not an open emitter!
The vulcan seems great at speeding up sight acusition to to guiding your eye to the center. Sure you can use it just for training but why turn off a helpfull thing you own? Which if your worried about training scars/light bleed why even use a red dot/sights at all? All guns can be shot and aimed with out sights by looking down the side of it for long guns and using the slide for pistols as just a universal thing. Which once you can hit all your shots at under 300 yards then you can start training with sights for the guns you have.
Just (tried) cleaning the inside lens on my 508T V2. Luckily I have a lens pen to reach in there but still can’t get the smudges or dust out of the corners. The enclosed emitter units are ugly but make sense.
Yeah, I have an older 407c on my daily P80 g19, and it's been fine. I have another P80 g17 build on the bench that's currently destined to live as the battle belt gun (instead of my current gig of swapping other guns over to it for desert days, usually the 19). I've been considering picking up one of these because there's nothing on the 17 right now; but yeah, I also don't see much reason to 'upgrade' for my daily carry.
I ran a 507 ACSS in a couple of USPSA matches and ran into a unique issue with the outer ring: on quickly acquiring the dot, especially out of movement, especially on the clock, it's easy to react to the flash of red from the outer circle as though it were your reticle and break shots way too early. On a couple of stages at a club match that translated into 3-4 misses total. Now, those were 10+ yd targets on a pistol I wasn't used to, but under stress it is possible that the outer ring can create more confusion than it solves.
I use the 507C X2 ACSS Vulcan mounted at 12 o'clock on top of my EoTech VUDU 1-6X SR-1 for passive NODs use on my retromod PCS33 (Hk93 clone from Parabellum Combat Systems), it's awesome, unfortunately longer optics such as LPVOs aren't very practical with Hk rollerlock type battery of arms (drop mag, lock bolt/charging handle back, replace mag, Hk SLAP!!! charging handle/bolt into battery), as such, the 507C X2 ACSS will be forward mounted 12 o'clock on the ACOG TA02 I just ordered to replace the VUDU.
I've been looking at getting the Primary Arms 507 but I wanted to see your thoughts on the bigger closed optic. I gave you a like for the great presentation of information, and subbed for how you described the Night Vision crowd.
I chose this for my G40MOS bear gun because I thought the likelihood of me using it from a compromised position or after an injury was a reasonable possibility. Having tested it in various weird positions and one handed etc it seems to be very good for accurately hitting relatively near targets in that manner.
People should know-- The 509T - RMR adapter plate that comes with it --- Does NOT fit the Zev and Brownells slides with the raised thread posts. I learned this the hard way and had to end up buying another 508T instead, and then get a whole other pistol for my 509T- (with a dedicated slide this time). So if your RMR slide has the raised posts and uses the thinner screws--- it is not compatible with the 509T or 509 ACSS rail style mounting.

You forgot that at a certain point, cell phones continued to get smaller and smaller.
The technological challenge was to create the smallest possible cell phone which culminated in the Zanco Tiny T1 (1.8" x 0.82").
Then the 'fablet' phenomenon struck and everything started to grow exponentially larger. At this point, I expect to see people traveling around with a pocket projector that can be used against any flat surface. No need to carry around a piece of hardware with a fixed glass display anymore.
Just bust out your pocket projector and proudly display all your information whenever and wherever. Privacy be damned...
Although, I could personally due without a cell phone for the rest of my life. I only have one because of my aging parents that _insist_ on traveling despite their advanced age/health.

I also tend to think that these enclosed emitter optics are too big for their intended purpose. They all remind me of an old tube tv or mailbox sitting on top of your pistol. Which, in my humble opinion, detracts from your overall situational awareness.

The good thing about these things being red dots, too, is you still keep both eyes open to use them. So there’s no loss of vision or situational awareness.

@@PolenarTactical You'd think it would be common sense, a closed system would prevent a problem from happening, but people get bent out shape on brand loyalty instead of recognizing its better to remove the potential problem from your gear so that you're that much better off than you were before.
You should do a video on the topic, hell, you can even demonstrate it having someone use a spray bottle on stream mode sprayed over top of you for a quick kindergarten explanation of what starburst effect and how glass can get obscured from a open system making sighting hard when you need it.
@@Slay_No_More I've had a single raindrop hit my emitter during a match, which made me very grateful for the backup iron, after a couple of shot the recoil cleared the dot enough for me to continue with it. However, the issue isn't brand loyalty, closed or opened emitter optic, the issue is people who sit in their couches with sheepdog t-shirts who go to an indoor range maybe once a year thinking they can only use optics that will survive the SageDyanmic drop test and have closed emitter optics that can be deployed immediately after a mile crawl through mud, and overnight, started trash talking opened emitter optics because they watched a few UA-cam videos.
All of my pistol red dots at this point are open emitter. I took a two day pistol course with Kyle Lamb where it started raining midway through day one. Of the 12 of us only 1 had a closed emitter red dot. All of us with open emitters were jealous of him a few minutes into that rain.
There’s an argument that for concealed carry it won’t matter, and I think there’s some truth to that. A typical defensive shooting likely won’t go long enough to see water accumulate by the emitter and then affect the projected dot in the time from when the pistol is taken out of concealment. But even I was surprised at really how quickly the nice emitter became a mess of red on my lens. Couple that with the fogging on the lens many of us saw (and this is an argument for using Cat Crap anti-fog), and we really were struggling. I tried switching to irons as mine could cowitness, but even that wasn’t easy. My Safariland RDS holster did help when the pistol was holstered.
I think we’re already seeing closed emitters get somewhat smaller (front to back of the optic) with the Holosun EPS. I’ll be interested to see how this evolves over time. The bulk is something that turns off a number of people that conceal and those same people won’t see the advantages materialize as much given that their optic isn’t as exposed as say in a duty rig. There are also many open emitter red dots already out there (large install base to switch over) and many pistols are cut for an RMR pattern and to my knowledge there isn’t an open emitter that fits that pattern. I think all of this means open emitters will be around for a long time.
Beg to differ, I’ve ran into multiple occasions where lint has built up on my 507k emitter from conceal carry.
@@tiGGerWanTSoMeCHess every day I hit the front and rear of the lens and the emitter with compressed air. It tends to prevent that from being an issue if you keep up with it.
Similar happened to me recently, shot a USPSA match and got rained on. Everyone was putting baggies and shit over their holsters w open emitters. My irons remained unaffected. If there was some kind of Safariland style holsters that completely covers the dot with some kind of flip cover, that could solve the issue maybe
@@rodiculous9464 the RDS holsters like Hop shows here do significantly cover the optic. Not everyone has one as they’re not cheap.
Snow has also proved to be an issue, especially large flakes around melting temperature with some wind. It takes one well placed flake to fly in on on the unprotected reflective lens and suddenly I have 10 dots instead of 1.
I have been testing the vulkan reticle in a 507c for about 3 months now and shot it in a few USPSA matches and I think the circle reticle has more utility than most people give it credit for.
When incorporating movement into shooting, while potentially also going from compressed ready to full extension etc, it has increased my average speed and consistency from a competition standpoint, as well as average draw time, reload time (shot to shot) etc. I am an experienced dot shooter on pistols, and have zero issues finding the dot - but the circle can act as a reference point similar to irons where you can intuitively know exactly where the muzzle is pointed faster.
It works similar to irons where as you are pressing out, or approaching a new shooting postion, quickly slowing down and starting to preaim at a target you can see the orientation of the irons in relation to the target and your mind knows it can break a shot before you have a full sight picture. It is kind of difficult to explain, but on a timer, my best times are about the same as a normal dot, but my maximum spread is lower as is the average time on particular drills.
I also like the chevron for the exact reasons you stated.

@@shootinbruin3614 nope - that was actually my primary concern before I ordered it, but it is thin enough and large enough that although you do see it, it doesn't affect my ability to just watch the chevron bounce up and down in the A zone. Some guys with longer arms than me, and a grip with less bent elbows, might see it even less or not at all. I shot match with it last weekend (Placed 3/33) and I can't actually remember seeing the ring at all during any stage (obviously I physically saw it, but my concentration was solely on the targets and the chevron, so I can't remember seeing it.)

I agree it’s an excellent reticle. My initial dive into red dots on pistols was a Vortex Venom and I hated it. The dot worked fine but outside of standing slow fire I couldn’t get a fast accurate shot off and transitioning was terrible. I sold that and didn’t come back until I heard excellent reviews on the Vulcan reticle. For me it was a game changer. The learning curve is greatly reduced and after a few hours I had a noticeable increase in alignment with speed. I highly recommend it.

It's crazy seeing red dots on pistols as gaudy, fragile, competention only thing to being almost a requirement on all duty and ccw pistols.
I still don't see them being a "requirement". I'm not sure that the weight/bulk/cost justifies the minor benefits you might get from one.
I value slimness and weight a little too much for a CCW one, but duty-wise, makes sense. Red dots are absurdly easy to use. Especially on pistols.

Well that’s sort of what happens overnight when companies like Holosun, Steiner, and Aimpoint release dots that are duty grade and have better feature sets than the RMR for similar or less money.
It also helps that tons of pistol slides are optics ready now and just need a mounting plate, where before you needed milling and lead times
I bought 507C with this reticle specifically for NODs use after Sage Dynamics pointed out the HUD-like big circle reticle in the dark. It really is cool to try in person.

The newer 509ts actually have updated battery life in the manual. 50k for the dot and the same 20k for the circle and dot reticle. I thought that was interesting as the 50k was based on the dot only reticle.

Not sure why that's surprising, it's the same 2 MOA dot the other optics have. Why wouldn't it have the same 50k battery life based off dot only? It's not gonna magically gain a huge chunk of battery life.

I slapped a Romeo 2 on my P320 in the fully enclosed configuration. I'm actually pretty impressed with the optic. Even at 6MOA, the dot is so crisp it's like a perfect circle. I wanted to try the enclosed emitter due to living in North Dakota and the extreme amount of snow and/or dust I encounter regularly. I have noticed that it helps with concealed carry for the humidity factor. I recently pulled my P365 with a Romeo Zero Elite and the window was wet and foggy from sweat and humidity. I had been outside and went inside to an AC controlled environment and that's where the temperature difference came into play. Just my experience so far but maybe there is something to the closed emitter thing.
I have 3 pistols with a Romeo1 -- and 2 of them keep killing batteries, even when they are turned off. So I'll never buy a Romeo dot again.
@@calholli that was definitely an issue with the earlier Romeos. But the 2 is at least on paper, at the next level of quality. Sage Dynamics put his seal of approval on it which is why I decided to try it. So far so good!

@@calholli Romeo 1 line products are Chinese in origin, Romeo2 is USA based hence the drastic increase in price...also I am not sure which Romeo products you have but some of them were known to be donkey and if you purchased them it's kinda on you. I specifically avoided them because I hadn't heard anything that made me think the larger form factor ones were a better purchase than a DPP or an SRO and their micro options are nothing compared to a RMRcc or a 407k.
I work security and the 509T and it is a great setup especially for duty use. There is a lot of debris that has gotten into the many holsters I have run over the years. I do prefer the Safariland 6300 series RDS holsters for this reason. It minimizes the amount of debris that tends to build up and the 509T is just easier to clean. I work outside in the elements and I'm glad that I went with a closed emitter for my primary duty sidearm.
I have the 507 green ACSS Vulcan mounted on my Canik Mete SFX thanks to an adapter plate from Patnik Solutions. Shot my first ever pistol match with it a few weeks ago. It was my first time ever shooting a pistol optic in general, too. The Vulcan reticle definitely helped me get a proper sight picture more quickly. Kind of like “pistol optic training wheels”. I had a lot of fun and will definitely compete again in the future. Great content as always, much love from Texas!
@@___meph___4547 oh man I really enjoy shooting mine! For whatever reason, Canik chose the mounting system to be a compact optics footprint like for the Shield RMSC and others. If you want to run a full size optic like something with the RMR footprint, you’ll need that adapter plate from Patnik Solutions. It’s very well machined out of metal and fits very snug. They’re about $60 on their website. Stock sights won’t co witness though since the plate is a bit thicker. Hope that helps!

The K footprint started on smaller optics but will redefine larger optics.
The K footprint gives manufacturers a better ability to mount the optic. That is why it first appeared on smaller optics.
The RMR or Holosun 507C footprint has design flaws that limit how manufacturers can mount optics, especially closed emitters.

My Gen 5 Glock 19 w/Gen 1 Trijicon RMR is still going strong even after ~1000 rounds. Keeps zero even after a battery change. Carried daily and I change the battery out once a year.
No "shake to wake" or button to press to turn it on. It just stays on. Constantly. Forever. Like a tiny Eye of Sauron.
Shake awake is the most overrated accessory feature in the last decade.

I've been running the 507C with the ACSS reticle on my Glock 19 for about a year and I've loved shooting with it. The Chevron is awesome and the big circle definitely shortened the learning curve for red dot equipped handguns. My P365xl is my true daily carry, while the Glock 19 only gets carried when my wardrobe permits it. That being said, as a nightstand gun and a gun I dry fire and shoot a lot, I still haven't had to replace the battery. So while 20K hours is not as much as 50K, it is still a lot.
Chevron also does double duty by helping to improve clarity for certain kinds of astigmatisms, I certainly prefer a lot of those to plain Jane red dots for that reason
The Gen 5 MOS slides have the holes drilled in closer so they don’t interfere with the extractor plunger. Also, with the MOS cut and the included mounting plate from Primary Arms, the profile is nice and low so you can cowitness. I have one on my department issued G47. It works great.

Bunch of guys saying they've had issues with rmrs and yet i've ran rmr's in moon dust, snow and rain repetitively over years and have yet to have an emitter blocked. Fogged wet lenses, yes, but same thing happened on my aimpoints on long guns as well.

I have the 509T X2 and I love it. It's much easier to use than my Vortex Venom due to the square window. I purchased a direct mount plate for my Glock MOS from Holosun for like 29 bucks that lets the optic sit much lower than the RMR plate in the box. Great content as always.

I have the open emitter Holosun on a Beretta 1301 and the Vulcan reticule makes snapping from target to target really fast. I totally recommend it for shotgun use, that reticule is great.
Another option is the 503g. It’s not the same but a similar reticle and enclosed tube.
Ive been shooting for a couple decades now. I never use any of that stuff on side arms.
Just train on irons and you'll be able to pick up anything and shoot.
Its just another thing to get hung up on stuff and to potentially fail. Then there are batteries etc.
Im just not of all that.
To be clear. I do use a light on tac rifles.
That's the extent of my accessories.

I have a 507k and carry it every single day all day working construction operating equipment and Ill say that I have to clean it out every single day and it gets ridiculously dirty and blooms after a few hours of work. Can't wait for the eps carry so it's just dirty and no dirty and blurry

I have the MOS version and the mount is much better. It’s about half the weight and put let’s me use the same sights I used while running an rmr. I’m pretty sure the MOS version sits lower than yours. Anyway I have mine mounted on my Glock 19 and have been extremely happy with it. It is bigger than a regular 509t, but when compared directly you can see the only difference is length. Also it’s a LOT lighter! If I remember correctly the Vulcan with mount was about 75% of the weight of my 509t with mount. I love this reticle and think it would be even better on some of the smaller optics. The smaller the window, the more likely you’ll need that huge outer circle. Definitely recommend changing the battery at least every 3 months. But I’ll take that for the added benefits. Anyways, love the channel
Also, I don’t think of it as a training aid, I think about it’s usefulness in awkward shooting positions.

Thank you for making this video. I've got my sights set on the Walther PDP which I've heard is a really good choice for pistol optics, but I'm a sucker for the closed frame optics. Might be an upgrade I'll look into once I get past finding those pricey full sized model mags.
I would argue that a closed emitter is more useful for concealed carry than open carry.
I've used an open emitter on a full size pistol in pretty shitty weather and never had any issues, but my concealed carry 507k constantly filled with lint and I was having to clean it all the time because it was scattering the dot enough that I just had a red sheen obscuring my view.
Since switching the the EPS Carry, I haven't had to de-lint my optic a single time

I just finished kitting out a new Sig P320 XTen and went with a 507C ACSS mostly because the 509 wasn't available in green which is my preference. I would have liked the enclosed emitter due to living in the desert but got a good deal on the 507 used, so here we are. Good stuff.

I've had the 509c with this same ACSS Vulcan reticle on my glock for about a year now and it is crystal clear for me and I have pretty bad astigmatism. I've used the chevron ranging feature up to 100 yards with good accuracy. Overall I love the reticle and it was a game changer for me with pistol shooting with astigmatism. Other red dots I've used on pistols and AR's starburst like hell and are rather annoying to look at, let alone shoot with.

Tip: if you have issues finding the dot. Once you have a proper grip, point (or whatever terminology you learned in class) and then point your thumbs at the target. I have found that most people find the dot right away with that trick. It also works with the Meprolight sight the P365 SAS has. If it works for you, please let me know and enjoy. If not, well at least you did not pay me for it. Please let me know if it doesn't work out for you as well.
For me I prefer a closed emitter more for concealed carry as my optic becomes a tray to catch lint, body hair, and sweat.
Same here, I don't understand the debate. I carried an open emitter for a while and man it gets absolutely filthy.
I thought my RMR was absolutely fantastic for about 7 years or so, until i started carrying and shooting it outside these past 2 years. It rains a lot here and snows in winter. I have had my RMR (and rifle mounted offset Docter for that matter) fill up with either water or snow to the point of becoming unusable every single time i carried it outside in bad weather for any prolonged time. That is why I would like to switch to a closed emitter ❄️ ⛄️

At least let’s get down to just an open emitter footprint and a closed emitter footprint. Pistol red dot footprints are the wild fucking west. I just had a slide milled for this optic, it has an adapter plate with an RMR footprint that the optic then clamps onto. But my chosen machine shop milled the slide in such a way that an RMR fits, but the HE509 adapter plate doesn’t! I actually think they did a good job with the milling, it’s perfect for an RMR… but everybody just be aware that you can’t take any type of cross compatibility for granted in the pistol RDS market.

There are plenty of 509T milling options, haven’t found many for 509 ACSS. And I’m not sure I’d want to mill it for that even if I could. You’re locked into one optic permanently, I don’t predict anyone’s going to adopt the 509 ACSS footprint. 509T is already pretty niche.

There's zero benefit to running other optics. And I've seen a lot of places offer the ACSS cut now. Maple leaf, CH does too, Battle Werx, Wager Machine works and more

I run a 509t v2 on my M18 mounted to a C&H Precision plate with built in rear sight. To lower 1/3 co-witness through the glass of 509t on that specific plate, a .325 front sight is needed.
The most negative thing I saw in reviews online for it (I've been researching it hard, since the price point is so painful but I like the features) has been that the build QC seems to be lacking. A lot of people complaining about the 'glue' that the rear lens is secured with being poorly applied and even not sealing the unit from internal fogging.
Looking at the rear of your unit, it appears to have some sketchy excess glue around that rear lens, but that could also just be the angle of the red dot to the camera/light source.
Every Holosun pistol optic I’ve had, 6 in total, seemed to have excess glue. It generally wasn’t noticeable in use, but it was there.
They're built in china. That's how they keep them cheaper than the US made optics. Chinese products skimp out on labor above all other things. Secondly the glass quality is nowhere near as durable as any of the leading US optics.

They're cheap and get the job done. Everyone has a pair of Mechanix. They last forever too, so ten bucks every other year (or longer) is a bargain as opposed to guys wearing 100 dollar Oakley Operator Hobo Gloves made for motorcycles

For my first pistol dot sight, I’ve opted for the standard 509T. However I haven’t experienced it yet... still waiting for my gun store to open back up from an inventory catalog overhaul. I shipped my slide out through them for milling almost two months ago. I’ll basically have to relearn the whole gun once I get the thing back together.

7:07 is really the crux of the issue. If you have a bunch of RMRs, no reason to drop money to switch.
But if you’re just now getting into the MRDS game, why not just get the closed emitter?
I was running a carbine class, and obviously, we spent some time shooting prone, below, and around baracades. During a transition from rifle to pistol, I noticed my red dot was no longer visible. Dirt had blocked the emitter temporarily, disabling the optic.
The moral of the story is to get a closed emitter optic. we don't buy these tools for the 99%, but for the 1% of situations.

I’ve got a 507c and I get ready sweaty and dirty so I can have buildup of dirt and stuff sitting in the dot I carry at 3o’clock so I can see why you want a closed dot

The only real advantage of a closed emitter is better protection for the emitter itself and it's much easier to remove the dirt, dust, or frost that accumulates on the lens when you step from a heated car and into the sub-zero temperatures we have in winter. Other than that, they're identical in construction to an open-emitter. That's it. It's not even the same argument between a convertible or a sedan, because they have to reinforce the vehicle frame on a convertible. My agency is currently doing test and eval on three handgun reflex optics; the Holosun 509T, the Aimpoint Acro P2, and the "old stand-by" Trijicon RMR. The 509T has not been performing to expectations when compared to the Acro (I mean, come on, it wasn't going to). The RMR just keeps doing what it does, projecting a dot and catching every crumb that drops from your lunch. If people were actually using their equipment instead of just staring at it, they might figure out that it's always going to go in this order; whatever god-tier product Aimpoint makes, followed by those plucky Christians at Trijicon, and then whatever company in China isn't flooded or shut down due to pestilence.
Yes they're tall optics but because they're retained similarly to pic rails rather than screws drilled down vertically, you can actually get 509s to mount lower than RMRs
Hop, my night vision experience, 507 acss vs 509 acss, is quite different from yours. I have both currently, so I compared them side by side. I had high hopes for moving to closed emitter... But my 509 reticle doesn't get as dim in NV as the 507. In addition, the second pane of glass cuts down on light transmission through the optic. These 2 issues separately are not huge issues, but when stacked together, have me swapping back to my 507 acss. It's hard to see anything through the window because it's dim, and anything you can see is blown out by the reticle. In addition, I get ghosting of the reticle depending on my backlighting (I'll see multiple faint Vulcan reticles off center through the window). Testing is with L3 pvs14 and elbit xlsh 2500 duals under a large variety of lighting conditions for the last 2 months.
I find the ACSS reticle helps out much more when shooting in very awkward positions where normally you may lose your dot.
That's what I be saying. Alot of these numb nuts call it a training aid. It's easy more than that like you pointed out. There are situations where you can't gonna be perfectly squared off with your attacker.

Literally the first thing you said was so hilarious and spot on. It's almost as if everyone decided, coincidentally (wink wink), that open emitters were just too much of a liability even though most of these people still have open emitters on tons of their guns and run them constantly...
Timely video. Thanks Hop. Yeah, my last two "red dots" were HOLOSUN 509T for a 5.7 x 28 pistol and HOLOSUN AEMS for my 9 mm RUGER PC chassis carbine. IMHO the AEMS is THE best carbine "red dot" (circle/dot). I'm done with open emitters.
->Even my "old" gen. 2 FN PS90 has a pretty tough Vortex SPARC II red dot tube sight. This was before good closed emitter sights were on the market. It's mounted on an aftermarket VERY low Pic rail to put the sight in perfect alignment with my eye.
But hey, at least it's not an open emitter!
The vulcan seems great at speeding up sight acusition to to guiding your eye to the center. Sure you can use it just for training but why turn off a helpfull thing you own? Which if your worried about training scars/light bleed why even use a red dot/sights at all? All guns can be shot and aimed with out sights by looking down the side of it for long guns and using the slide for pistols as just a universal thing. Which once you can hit all your shots at under 300 yards then you can start training with sights for the guns you have.
The tone of these videos has a factual "fuck everything" vibe. You cannot beat it.
Just (tried) cleaning the inside lens on my 508T V2. Luckily I have a lens pen to reach in there but still can’t get the smudges or dust out of the corners. The enclosed emitter units are ugly but make sense.

Yeah, I have an older 407c on my daily P80 g19, and it's been fine. I have another P80 g17 build on the bench that's currently destined to live as the battle belt gun (instead of my current gig of swapping other guns over to it for desert days, usually the 19). I've been considering picking up one of these because there's nothing on the 17 right now; but yeah, I also don't see much reason to 'upgrade' for my daily carry.
If you live in a country where the threat of rain is a daily occurrence - closed is really going to be the way to go.
I ran a 507 ACSS in a couple of USPSA matches and ran into a unique issue with the outer ring: on quickly acquiring the dot, especially out of movement, especially on the clock, it's easy to react to the flash of red from the outer circle as though it were your reticle and break shots way too early. On a couple of stages at a club match that translated into 3-4 misses total. Now, those were 10+ yd targets on a pistol I wasn't used to, but under stress it is possible that the outer ring can create more confusion than it solves.
Probably just need to practice more. Or turn the ring off 🤷
This sounds like a shooter problem moreso than an equipment problem.
I kind of see this as a mini Eotech. Looks like it might be a good budget night vision option with that big window.

The advantage of not getting shirt lint on the emitter isn't worth the trade off of having to stack plates imo . I'll stick with my Holosun 508T.

I use the 507C X2 ACSS Vulcan mounted at 12 o'clock on top of my EoTech VUDU 1-6X SR-1 for passive NODs use on my retromod PCS33 (Hk93 clone from Parabellum Combat Systems), it's awesome, unfortunately longer optics such as LPVOs aren't very practical with Hk rollerlock type battery of arms (drop mag, lock bolt/charging handle back, replace mag, Hk SLAP!!! charging handle/bolt into battery), as such, the 507C X2 ACSS will be forward mounted 12 o'clock on the ACOG TA02 I just ordered to replace the VUDU.

I've been looking at getting the Primary Arms 507 but I wanted to see your thoughts on the bigger closed optic. I gave you a like for the great presentation of information, and subbed for how you described the Night Vision crowd.
I chose this for my G40MOS bear gun because I thought the likelihood of me using it from a compromised position or after an injury was a reasonable possibility. Having tested it in various weird positions and one handed etc it seems to be very good for accurately hitting relatively near targets in that manner.

People should know-- The 509T - RMR adapter plate that comes with it --- Does NOT fit the Zev and Brownells slides with the raised thread posts. I learned this the hard way and had to end up buying another 508T instead, and then get a whole other pistol for my 509T- (with a dedicated slide this time). So if your RMR slide has the raised posts and uses the thinner screws--- it is not compatible with the 509T or 509 ACSS rail style mounting.
