The line ups help with relieving the tension on your original hairline when you're doing styles or pony tails that tightly pull your hairline back so the tapered line relieves that tension for your hairline. The problem is when you taper immediately after twisting or locking your locs.
My loc lady told me to always come to her first before my line up to avoid the push back and she also started my locs like a inch from my hair line so that my barber can identify the line and fade it without touch near my loc foundation. Shape ups are a must for the full look it’s extra money but why not treat yourself.
I understand the part of not taping up until your hair settles..agreed on that. Me personally I started my dreads a lil further back from the tape line because dreads do pull your hair back and I dont want my hair line to be pushed way back when i decide to cut my dreads. My opinion is to give it that space in between the most pull you should have is from where the dreads begin, and giving a possible chance of not having a pushed back tape line if you so happened to chop the locks off one day. Good advice on not taping up so often, I definitely agree with him on that.
Det 313 I’m starting my locs soon and I don’t want them to start at the very front of my forehead I wanna do the tapered look so u saying I don’t have to cut it first? Just have my lady start the locs further back & let my barber come taper it?
I would say have them put in first because if your barber tapers that part of your hairline there’s no going back cuz if your dreads aren’t in the desired spot you can just take em out redo however close or further while you still have hair on your line
Det 313 I started locs about 7 months ago so their pretty much locked and i already have a taper but considering this lockdown thing I let it grow so my taper is like a short fro(2-3 inches maybe.) I feel like my barber pushed my taper too far back. Since i grew my taper back do you think I can add the hair in with my next retwist?
I agree you don’t need a shape up. I actually started my locs from a bob/tapered afro so I already had a lineup but once my locs started growing I stopped because the barber I went to nipped one in the back and I had to combine it with another one smh. I basically let all the hair that was faded grow back and fused it into my locs. Now that my locs are shoulder length I’ll only get my beard lined up and slightly faded at the side burns. Never been a fan of having that 2-3 inch gap from the line up to the locs like Omarion and so many other people you see nowadays
There is no evidence that supports the notion that getting "edge ups" causes a receding hairline. The same can be said about choosing not to cut your hair. What is fact is that constant stress via pulling the hair back too tightly, getting it retwisted too often, and even excess weight due to not cleaning your hair properly can lead to traction alopecia for most people. With that said, If you live or work somewhere where natural locs would be considered "messy" then you may benefit from tapering the hairline and temples because the simple fact the hair is cut short relieves tension if you are required to pull it back for long periods of time everyday i.e 8 hr work day.
1.Decide of u want a taper or haircut before getting dreads 2.If u getting a whole head of dreads do u want edges or leave them in dreads(which can bring your headline back) 3.Dont get too tight braids or up hair dos 4.Let them grow or dont style a fresh retwist (ponytail or put them to the back)

I've had my dreads for 12 years now..I retwist, style and edge my hair by myself and have it down to a T..I get plenty compliments from both men and women on how clean my hair looks etc especially when I rock a bun..I guess it depends on where u from and how your style is..I prefer fading the front with a fresh twist or when I'm lazy leaving it rough with a fresh line..ie gunplays dreads..in florida this look is real common..so yea. Like u said to each is own.
If your locs are on your line no it'll probably push your hairline back anyway but if you decide to start your dreads an inch or so off your line its different the hairs that grow in the front of my line are too fine and thin anyway (baby hairs)
Not gone lie barber stay nipping my locs now I’m growing out my tapers after 9 years of growing my locs! Whole new journey ! Appreciate the information tho gang

The issue is, a lot you dudes have had terrible hairlines before locs. And have and still have bad barbers. I get my hair retwisted probably less than 10x a year and get a shape up AFTER a retwist. Sometimes I don’t even have my barber do my hairline since my loctician gets those hairs at the hairline and it looks like I already got shaped up 🤷🏾♂️And tbh, my hairline has never been pushed back in my 27 yrs of living and Ive had multiple barbers. I get shapeup throughout the year since I have a beard 🤷🏾♂️
People be saying it’s just my opinion on things that are actual facts to avoid fighting ignorant people. Shape ups can destroy your hairline when you have dreads because there cutting into your hair because it’s dreaded and eventually it just looks dumb
Same here it took me 2 years to shape myself up but after the initial shape up I stopped. This is the second time I locked my hair and the first time I never got a shape up due to having that patch of hair you will need to constantly have to go to the barber to get rid of. The only thing I do now is cut off my widows peak and edge up the sides and back plus my beard. We are the same complexation but I have fine hair that takes long to lock so a edge up would damage my locks continuing forward.
I 1000% Agree With You Vinny! In My 2nd Set Of Locs I Made The Mistake Of Getting Lineups. I Can't Lie Them Barbers Was Cutting Deep Into My Hairline To The Point That I Cut The Sides Off Into A Loc Mohawk.
I agree with you my brother. I went through that phase of having shape ups. My hairline was receding because of it. Also, some of my locs close to my hairline unravel and fell out. So, I had to cut my hair and start again from scratch. The only shape up I need is for my beard.
Start oiling the front taper and don’t get a line up for a while and then when it grows start twisting the hair into your dreads. It’ll take a while but it’s better than restarting and that’s what I’m working on right now
To each it’s own you can’t tell another man what to do with they hair.. People like what they like just because you like your hair a certain way doesn’t mean the world should go off what you think looks right. The new tapered line is the new look for dreads. Because dreads, braids, whatever type of hair twisting pulls your line back if you have them right in the line up of your head. If you have the dreads started a inch or two from the line your hairline won’t be affected. That’s why you see dudes that had Dreads or braids for many years cut they shit off and their hairline is pulled back. That’s because they started the dreads right on the hairline and the pulling and retwisting over the years pulls the hair away from the hairline
The pushback locs with the shape up looks like trash. Can’t understand how it became a thing. The natural hairline looks better with locs no matter how they are styled

I just got my starter locs & before I had a fro but with a small taper fade on the side and the back , should I continue to let him do the small fade on the side and back ? and tell him go lightly on my line
I’m working on growing out my front taper in my hairline to twist it into my dreads so I don’t have to get line ups that much and I’m working on growing out my lil taper on the sides to twist it in to
