Curtis-Verna sang the title role 5 times at the Met: 3 with Corelli, one with Jess Thomas and once with Tucker. Her placement in the staircase scene results in her not being heard as well as Corelli, standing by the footlights. She is heard to best in advantage in the final duet when they are on the same level. She's solid as a rock here. She clearly doesn't have Nilsson's volume - who did?!? But the top is thrilling and she has ample support for the long lines. She certainly didn't deserve the dismissive comments of Kolodin in his book. She was a fine singer during an era when she was up against spectacular singers.

      What does Kolodin say?

      I agree: She doesn't have Nilsson's volume...
But this is exactly, what makes her Turandot so fragile and unique.
Thank you for sharing. It's a gem. 💎

Kolodin I frequently have issues with. I concur with the late Paul Jackson in many of his critical comments regarding Kolodin in his 3 books on the MET‘s Broadcast history. As mentioned above the MET would be fortunate to have Curtis-Verna on their roster now.

It takes more than just outsize volume to become a great singing artist.

She'd probably have a major career as a top-tier star now.

Very solid singing from Curtis-Verna. Unfortunately, I think her voice was missing that extra bit of charisma that makes one a star. Nothing she could do about that. Regardless, her is singing here is more than respectable. Corelli is Corelli.

Curtis-Verna sang Turandot?!!!! WHAAAAAT? I guess I haven't heard her much at all. I had no idea she could handle such a role! Thank you, dear man.

Yes, she was my first-ever Turandot, and she was super! Jess Thomas, Lucine Amara, and Bonaldo Giaiotti were Calaf, Liu, and Timur.

@@oberon481 Oh, you kind man I LOVE Amara. Such technique! The first opera I ever saw was Mme. Butterfly. Zylis-Gara (another favorite) was to sing, and she was ill, so Amara sang. AHHHHHHHHH!!! My first live opera! She was magnificent. Sorry I never heard Curtis-Verna. I certainly knew the name and probably heard her once (on a recording?). Thanks so much.

@@josephcollins6033 Curtis-Verna is the Donna Anna on an interesting and hard-to-find Don Giovanni recording from the '50's in which the men largely out-sing the women. Giuseppe Taddei sings the title role with Italo Tajo as one of the finest Leporellos and Cesare Valletti an excellent Ottavio.
