Sublime, divine Corelli and Simionato: this duet and the duet of Simionato and Ghiaurov from the same performance are among the most precious gems of operatic history. Corelli is heartbreaking and his technique superhuman. Simply phenomenal!
I gladly agree with you! Without underestimating the titans before him (Caruso, Gigli, Pertile, Lauri-Volpi), Corelli simply had 100% of everything that matters: quality and size of the voice, technique, musicality, imagination, sensitivity, sensuality, passion, tenderness, elegance, abandon, ability to appreciate and create beauty, taste, looks. His detailed and memorable phrasing makes him the ideal interpreter of most of the roles he sang: Chenier, Don Jose, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Canio, Enzo, Turiddu, Don Alvaro, Don Carlo, Radames, Manrico, Ernani, Macduff, Raoul, Romeo, Werther... No other tenor could express love, desperation, vulnerability, tenderness, abandon like Corelli!

Corelli in his prime at 41, and Simionato never sounding better than this, EVER, in her 53rd year (and near the very end of her career!!). She brilliantly matches every high Bb, B natural and C that Franco sings with one of her own. Indeed, although she sang Amneris, Azucena and Eboli, the "high" Verdi mezzo roles, Valentina was the highest lying role she ever sang. What a triumph for her, too! Brava, Giulietta. Ti voglio bene assai.
Jeffrey Miller She & Dominguez were incredible Mezzo,s.Very diverse repertoire indeed. Two of the greatest dramatic mezzo sopranos in the golden era. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Surely the greatest tenor voice of the 20th century. For those who question his "technique" listen to the dimuendo on "tu m ami". Very few opera singers in any range can make such a perfect dimuendo and fill it with expressive emotion at the same time.

Fantastic. I haven't heard this in at least 40 years. I love the comments but I believe a duet includes two singers and Simionato is as great as Franco, especially since it's supposed to be a soprano role, It's just great.

Electric! I was fortunate to come to meet Franco Corelli and his wife at Carnegie, then in 1980s. Though very brief, I knew full well who I was privileged to meet. I never dreamed that was in my future.
This kind of singing awakens every fiber in ones system and if it does not your DEAD. What an amazing pair for this incredible duet so exited to have run into this Thank you racheleleeba for sharing this with us. This makes me want to have been born earlier to have had the pleasure to have been able to experience this kind of commitment from both of these divinely amazing singers in person but I am Thankful BRAVO!
Hard for me to appreciate Meyerbeer: no arias, only attempts with loud orchestration, everything is left to the voices of the singers, who are here wonderful of course.
How magnificent! this was once a very popular opera, but it demands great singers will powerful and flexible voices- and to think that this production also featured Joan Sutherland! The cast is amazing! and Gavezzeni was one of the great opera conductors. thank you for this wonderful post!
Sublime music and sublime singing. This is what Heaven should be for us opera fans. Heard Corelli many times in the early 70's at the Met. Unfortunately, his nerves had taken over his singing by this time and his performances could be very variable. Heard him again in Newark, NJ in the early 80's in a gala concert and he had gotten much better but he would not sing in opera anymore. Sad. The voice was still there.
Thank you very much, dear Roberta, for this rare gem!! So beautiful singing of two geniuses!! Che delizia d'ascoltare questa bellezza!! Grazie tante ancora . Peccato, oggi no si cantano cosi...
Pavarotti said about Franco Corelli's voice "He had vocal chords made of steel!". What a wondrous voice, I thank goodness for the recordings that were made of his performances, simply thrilling. His co-star here, Simionato, I hadn't heard before but a glorious voice. I am no expert on opera and singing but discovered it late in life when an uncle left me some 'Readers Digest' recordings of classical music. Only recently discovered Corelli and now have quite a few recordings, but UA-cam and Spotify are simly great avenues to discover music you've never heard before. Thanks to Roberta Huebner for uploading this gem.
Chris Simmonds My story is similar. I didn't discover Corelli until hearing him on UA-cam about nine years ago. I thought then and still do that he was unbelievable. Speaking of Simionato, if you haven't already heard the live Salzburg Trovatore with her, Corelli, Leontyne Price, and Ettore Bastianini, conducted by Karajan, give it a listen. It doesn't get any better than that!
Pavarotti said Corelli started too late, unfortunately due to working for his family. Also, Corelli said his first teacher ruined is upper register. He could originally sing very high notes. He also became I'll and wouldn't sing if it wasn't as good as earlier. Lack of confidence etc. So good to hear him at his finest. No one like him.
And let's not forget that the debt we owe these two singers is that they allow us to see what a genius Meyerbeer was. The best singers always see themselves as servants of the composer.
+causabon99 I really miss Franco. I heard him live in Minneapolis in 1968 and 1969 on the Met US spring tours. I had never heard anything like it and still never have. What a privilege to have been able to experience such excellence. The shear power of his voice in person was incredible.
i heard him there, and then, too. Roméo in 68 with Freni. the Forza with Lucine Amara and Adriana with la Tebaldi, in 69. i was there... some of the greatest nights i ever spent at the opera, and this said after nearly 50 years.

Superb, incredible duo.
OH MY GOD !!! what amazing cast.
Simionato e Corelli anche in Carmen semplicemente insuperabili.
@@bobchevallier8456 He didn't say he started TOO late-he said he started late
Grandissimo tenore, delle Marche onore e dell'Italia tutta.
gabriele pignotti Si signore! Inmenso!!
Baciato Dall’universo
And let's not forget that the debt we owe these two singers is that they allow us to see what a genius Meyerbeer was. The best singers always see themselves as servants of the composer.
Absolutely stunning - I don't think there are any singers today who could pull this kind of intensity off.
+causabon99 I really miss Franco. I heard him live in Minneapolis in 1968 and 1969 on the Met US spring tours. I had never heard anything like it and still never have. What a privilege to have been able to experience such excellence. The shear power of his voice in person was incredible.
You are blessed
i heard him there, and then, too.
Roméo in 68 with Freni. the Forza with Lucine Amara and Adriana with la Tebaldi, in 69.
i was there... some of the greatest nights i ever spent at the opera, and this said after nearly 50 years.
