wish they had established that one for this movie so it would make the more sense for us viewers as to why Spongebob is a "grown adult" yet still a kid in a sense.
Well I mean the second one is kinda meh and the third one is a mix of this movie and the Atlantis two-parter and not a good one... Or something like that, I´ve seen it only once wayyy back.
It'a also full of the worst Spongebob stuff that the later seasons hard focused on (like the bubble scene that makes them act like toddlers or the constant butt shots).
What I like the most about this movie is that when SpongeBob and Patrick head to Shell City and everything gets gloomier, yet they're still acting like kids.
Personal story: I auditioned for a stage production of A Charlie Brown Christmas. The audition required us to use a monologue from a children’s show or movie. I used the Goofy Goober speech for my audition and went all in on it. Everyone laughed their heads off and soon after that, I was cast as Pig Pen. And that’s the story of how SpongeBob got me my first paid gig.
I did the same thing as a wizard of Oz production!! I recited the part where spongebob thought he won manager. It landed me the spot of lollipop munchkin. This would have been a couple years after the movie came out
I love this collab because unlike most NC collabs where it's usually the guest who has to adjust to the Critic's style like Todd, Lindsay, or Brad; here, it's the Critic who adjusts to Strider's style.
To this day, I still can't get over how emotional the scene with SpongeBob and Patrick drying up to death was. It was so heartbreaking and tragic to watch, and yet it was executed so beautifully, that I could not look away even when I had so many tears in my eyes.
my brother made fun of me for crying during that scene as a kid lmao. But looking back yea it made sense why i would cry. Two of the happiest characters in fiction facing death is unexpected and sad.
Another Fun Fact from this amazing film that we all love so much is: David Hasselhoff's part was written before the actor was even approached. He readily agreed without reading the script, largely at the behest of his daughters.
Another Fun Fact: The idea for the frog fish to catch SpongeBob and Patrick came from series creator Stephen Hillenburg, who mentioned on the special feature "The Case of Sponge Bob". He explained while the film was being made Stephen went snorkeling in Hawaii and he saw a frog fish hiding behind a yellow sea sponge. And as Stephen watched it he figured he should use this in the movie. Also real frog fish have a thing on their head called a small worm lure to catch their meals. But for the movie they changed it to a sweet old lady selling ice cream sundaes which attracted both SpongeBob and Patrick.
I remember being ten years old, the absolute HEIGHT of Spongebob fame, this was the biggest movie in me and my friends lives. We all had this sense that once the movie was over, there'd be no more Spongebob and a chapter of our childhoods would close forever. I remember just sitting in the theater through all the end credits, something I had never done before, not crying or anything but just kind of like watching the sun set and accepting "Well, adios Spongebob." And then...well, y'know.
Spongebob is a comfort show for me. I grew up watching it and now, I'm almost 20 and I still watch it lol. I have the first 3 seasons on dvd and it's my go to show to watch when I'm working on homework. I can literally quote most episodes (and this movie) line by line
Another Fun Fact: This is the first time Karen is seen as a computer monitor on wheels. She was later shown like that in the television series after the film's release.
I've found that younger fans (who didn't grow up during the initial airing of seasons 1-3) tend to view this movie as perfect more often than older fans.
Seeing this movie in the theater on my 13th birthday was one of the highlights of my childhood. My friends and I literally cheered during Goofy Goober Rock and that song has been permanently on every music device I've owned since.
Another Fun Fact: The ship used for the live-action pirate scenes in the beginning was the 1960 replica of the HMS 'Bounty', a merchant ship used by the British Empire in the late 1700s. The replica ship was sunk in late 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. (In fact, there's a character in the movie and series that is named Sandy)
In the episode "Patty Caper," Patrick drew a picture of Squidward eating a Krabby Patty in a very unsettling way... Did the showrunners based that scene from 20:29?
I think it was because like many adults since he didn’t grow up with SpongeBob to him it probably looked like a show that was gonna be a dumb waste of time, which I think most likely steered him away from it much like it does for a lot of adults, it’s a show you really have to give a chance and then you’ll see the greatness that lies under the hood
This is by far the greatest movie based on a TV show ever. The epic story, iconic characters, and banger songs, are all just amazing. And I love the message that it's okay to let your inner kid out sometimes. This is how the franchise should have ended.
I grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants with my dad. I still remember when we saw this together in theaters, I really have a soft spot for this movie.
@cheneethompson5756 always a classic quote. My favorite is SpongeBob blowing a bubble of an Elephant while Patrick points at it laughing "It's a Giraffe!"
I was a HUGE SpongeBob fan during its golden years. I had a whole shelf of SpongeBob stuff, and I was ecstatic about seeing the movie. My mom took me and my little brother to see it on opening day, and it it was a memorable experience. I also got the watch that Burger King gave out to promote the movie. The video game is lot of fun to play, and it serves as an unofficial sequel to the original Battle for Bikini Bottom game. Dennis' design on the level where you fight him on Hasselhoff was his original design before it was changed to what it is in the movie. Plus, the game is the only place where it has the movie's concept art. One of them has SpongeBob sending Patrick away after they have gotten mustaches with an ice cream cone on the ground. I'd like to think there was a deleted plot element where SpongeBob catches Patrick eating an ice cream cone, which angers him since it's not a manly thing to do, so he tells Patrick to leave which makes Patrick sad. I've been going on and on, so the last thing I'll say is that the soundtrack is lit!
I was never too into SpongeBob and I always thought the movie was ok even at a young age, but because a lot of my friends praised and made jokes about it even to this day, I do appreciate what it tried to do for the fans who did grow up with it. Not to mention I’ve grown to admire Stephen Hillenburg’s choice to see his vision of how the show would end his way. (even if it’s still continuing and even if he briefly came back for a little while. Rest in peace, Stephen Hillenburg.)
It's not the first time. They've done several collabs together in the past. I can't say I was expecting Phantomstrider to collab with the Nostalgia Critic for a review of The Spongebob Movie, but I also feel like I should have expected it as an inevitability, too. ;)
This was probably the best collaboration I have seen from the nostalgia critic. And Phantomstrider is a fantastic UA-camr that I wish gets even more recognition!
My favorite line in the movie: “All bubble blowing babies will be beaten senseless by every able-bodied patron in the bar.” “Bar.” I don’t know why, but that extra “bar” from that one dude at the end of that phrase always made me laugh, and still does.
I just re-watched that scene, and only just realized that the guy who said that extra "bar" only did so because he started saying the line a half second later than everyone else.
I saw this movie in theaters on a school field trip, when I was just starting to watch SpongeBob. This was one of the best theatre going experiences in my childhood.
it was same for me too. i was 7 when the film came out. I begged my dad to see it he hated spongebob but he knew I wanted to see it so hes like alright fine and we ended up seeing it lol
@@RYMAN1321 I cannot tell you the reactions we all had when we saw SpongeBob and Patrick dying was. Everyone was crying, but we cheered when they came back to life.
Another Fun Fact: Patchy the Pirate from the series was originally going to be featured in the theater segments. However, he was quickly scrapped and replaced with the pirate crew when Paramount executives took issue with Patchy's schtick as the host of a cheap kids' show, as anything cheap-looking, even if done intentionally as a parody, made them feel uncomfortable. The pirate's parrot, however, still has the same voice as Patchy's parrot, Potty.
It warms my heart seeing this movie get talked about in such a (sort of) sincere way, and I agree with the closing statement Critic and PhantomStrider had. It's no masterpiece, but it's more than just a simple comfort movie, and it holds up after all these years
One of the best and smoothest collab reviews, well done. The SpongeBob series being almost two decades old, is indeed a nostalgia experience reviewing it again
Fun fact: the Late Stephen Hillenburg wanted this to be the end of Spongebob as a whole, but because it did so well with audiences, he kept going. Guess Phantomstrider’s got me covered.
well actually one of the movie is a spinoff movie about sandy cheeks that's coming to Netflix in 2024 and the other one is a actual movie coming to theaters in may 2025 called the spongebob movie: search for squarepants.
I never thought I would see this day come, Phantom Strider and Nostalgia Critic in a SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Review on Channel Awesome. THANK YOU!!!!!
I can’t believe 2004 was almost 20 years ago. Feels like just yesterday I was 15 years old and went to see this movie because I thought that was the end
Originally, SpongeBob was supposed to end after their film. But Nickelodeon continued the series after the great success it had with their ratings and plus, it would’ve been devastating for it to end so abruptly.
Wow on the last nostalgia critic review I asked if you could review this movie at some point only for this to be the next review, hope you enjoyed this gem of a movie
Another Fun Fact: While Sandy has a very minor role in the final version of the film, she originally was a tad more prominent. During SponeBob's morning routine at the beginning, he was meant to go to Sandy's tree dome and find it abandoned. He remembers that Sandy returned to the surface, making him sad for a moment. Then, towards then end of the film, after SpongeBob and Patrick escape Shell City, they were to meet Sandy who appears as a real life squirrel, which disgusts Patrick so much he vomits repeatedly. Sandy agrees to help them return to Bikini Bottom, though she is busy with her own adventure and being chased by a group of men in black suits. While she helps them escape to the beach, they'd run past human versions of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. Apparently, this scene was cut due to Nickelodeon taking issue with the joke of Sandy being a fugitive on the run from the government and was also due to Patrick vomiting being shown on camera.
Happy Birthday Malcolm. Also, this video was a true nostalgia trip for me. I took my kids to see it when it came out. I have to admit, I was impressed.
I actually DO see this movie as a masterpiece. Not many movies put being childish or immature in a very positive light. Also, I like how Squidward finally starts giving a shit once Plankton starts taking over, only to be given the bucket treatment. By the way, this movie came out on my birthday, and I even got the OST CD, which included songs from THE FLAMING LIPS AND MOTORHEAD. Also, it's theorized that the ice cream IS alcoholic because the bar section of the Goofy Goober is empty and dim, implying that it's a place for "adults" only.
Just gonna say it. This is a childhood classic and favourite of mine. I watched it for the first time in fifth grade. I’m now a senior. It never fails to make me laugh hysterically.
Seeing this movie in theaters was one of the best days of my life. Also, the preview for Avatar: the Last Airbender was attached to this film, so that makes it even more important. Also, still shocking that Scarlett voiced Mindy
Really enjoy this crossover! You guys made a great team together with this review. The first SpongeBob movie is one of my favorites when it comes to films based on a cartoon, and I still enjoy many of the songs and memes it came from it!
I definitely saw this in theaters back in 2004, I was the right age and loved SpongeBob. Ill always love this movie and I hope you cover the other SpongeBob movies and more Nickelodeon movies.
Let's see: 1. Good Burger 2. The 2010 film that should've been left on ice. 3. Bay Turtles 4. Bay Turtles 2 5. Clockstoppers 6. Playing with Fire 7. The Rugrats Movie 8. Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius 9. Rango 10. Lemony Snicket's a series of unfortunate events 11. This film.
19:35 Fun fact: this guy wasn't even DUBBED in the Dutch version of this movie, so you know what they did? They made SpongeBob's Dutch voice actor, speak a little English!
Just watched the full review. Growing up I absolutely was obsessed with SpongeBob so being a 4 year old around Christmas time getting to see this movie followed by my first snow (doesn't snow here much) and getting a DS for Christmas... Amazing childhood memories
I remember this being a big deal when I was a kid and I honestly still enjoy this movie as an adult. It still makes me laugh and I really like rewatching it to see how many scenes are still used as memes today.
According to the creator, Stephen Hillenberg, this was supposed to be the finale of the series. What I really hope the show does in its final season is lead up to the first movie with the building at the Krusty Krab 2.
Dang you just unlocked a memory for me… it just now clicked that my father, sister and I saw the Incredibles and this movie not on the same day, but only 1-2 days apart (over Thanksgiving weekend that year).
Technically, it’s never actually been officially confirmed as the ending of the show. One writer even came out on Twitter a couple years ago and said no, it’s not the ending because SpongeBob literally has no continuity, so no episode (even if the show ends) nor movie is actually “the end.” That said, a lot of fans consider it the official ending, just because Hillenburg wasn’t planning on anything else after this while writing it.
Wonderful memories of watching this and the show with my family. My mom took my sister and I to see this opening weekend. The scene where SpongeBob and Patrick dry out, I was squeezing my mothers arm trying not to cry.
Ah, the exact crossover review I’d been longing to see ever since I realised Strider was a Nostalgia Critic fan. And you all did it justice. Great work, everyone!
This Movie has such a special place in my heart. When I was a kid, I begged my Mom to take me to the theater to watch it, we came late and only saw the last 30 minutes. When the DVD was announced that was the only thing I asked my parents for that year. I watched the movie countless times and loved it, and I even still have the same DVD to this day. Aww. Good Times.
This movie has always been one of my favorites, here I am, an 18 year old man, and saying that The Spongebob Squarepants Movie is my all time favorite movie, but it has something a lot of other movies I grew up with didn't, not only my favorite childhood show, but also the older I get the more I realize it had a genuine story and message to tell. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet delivers a timeless message that everyone can understand and enjoy, and if anything that about sums up what the first 3 seasons of the show
I'm always delighted to see a crossover with PhantomStrider, and the movie you chose to review makes it all the more exciting! This film has always been a childhood favorite of mine and I was happy to see just how well it's held up at a recent summer movie screening. Keep it up with the fantastic content, you two!

I saw this movie in theaters on a school field trip, when I was just starting to watch SpongeBob. This was one of the best theatre going experiences in my childhood.
OMG I did too!
I saw it with my school day camp back in 2005 when I was 10, and my audience was completely packed and everyone enjoyed it.
it was same for me too. i was 7 when the film came out.
I am so glad you gave this film all the attention it deserved
This movie will always have a special place in my heart, as this was the first movie I saw in theaters.
Same
Remember the SpongeBob SquarePants movie video game
@@DiegoHernandez-xt2su me to
Fun fact: the Late Stephen Hillenburg wanted this to be the end of Spongebob as a whole, but because it did so well with audiences, he kept going.
Guess Phantomstrider’s got me covered.
And its still going, getting 4 more movies in the next 1-3 years
I heard that too.
Strider literally said that in the video already.
If it had been the end, SpongeBob would never have gotten as legendary as it is today.
well actually one of the movie is a spinoff movie about sandy cheeks that's coming to Netflix in 2024 and the other one is a actual movie coming to theaters in may 2025 called the spongebob movie: search for squarepants.
Time flies! In 2004, I was 11
On Sunday, I'll be 30!
Ah...2004

"Australian episode of Bob's Burgers" is truly a hidden gem of a quote
Phantomstrider is one of the most wholesome youtubers- I love it when you two collab!
I laughed at his voice coming out of Tamara’s body 😂
He & Mr. Enter are the 2 SpongeBob reviewers.
It's always fun when Phantom and Doug collab. You both have good chemistry.
when did they collab other then this
@@toastrave7820 He made a cameo on PhantomStrider's channel in "Worst Movies of all Time" and did a crossover in "Creepiest Animated Movies."
I'm not a fan of Doug as a person but Phantom I can respect. He actually acts chill and respects people even if they disagree with him
@@contentcorsair In fairness to @toastrave7820, those were quite a while ago. I personally wish they did it more. They work off each other great.

Ever since I started watching NC over a decade ago, I always thought: “when will he ever review The SpongeBob movie?”
Glad to see it finally happen
Man I’ll never forget the time I saw this in theaters when I was a little kid with my mother. Ugh such a roller coaster of emotions lol 😂❤️
I remember when I rewatched this movie at college. When Spongebob and Patrick came back the crowd cheered. It was great.
Seeing this movie in theaters was one of the best days of my life. Also, the preview for Avatar: the Last Airbender was attached to this film, so that makes it even more important. Also, still shocking that Scarlett voiced Mindy
Especially doing video game too
Before she was Black Widow, Scarlet Johansson was a Mermaid Princess.

Really enjoy this crossover! You guys made a great team together with this review. The first SpongeBob movie is one of my favorites when it comes to films based on a cartoon, and I still enjoy many of the songs and memes it came from it!
Loved the possessed Tamara bit 😂
Is it wrong of me to want more of Tamara getting possessed lol she was hilarious. Just make that a series by itself actually 😂
It’s not wrong of you even I want to and it’s 😂

Ace Ventura 😂😂😂😂
Yup
leaning heavy into the nostalgia lately and i absolutely love it
16:08 ill never get tired of that scene.
You guys feel the same?
You know it was only a matter a time before Phantom appeared on one of Doug’s videos and I am here for it!
When he possessed Tamara was funny
Finally we reach the first SpongeBob movie. And it’s great seeing PhantomStrider again.
I agree with you!
This review aged like fava beans and a nice chianti.
I'm pretty sure you just made so many fans happy that you review this

I’d love to see more crossovers from the Nostalgic Man.
So would I
I definitely saw this in theaters back in 2004, I was the right age and loved SpongeBob. Ill always love this movie and I hope you cover the other SpongeBob movies and more Nickelodeon movies.
Let's see:
1. Good Burger
2. The 2010 film that should've been left on ice.
3. Bay Turtles
4. Bay Turtles 2
5. Clockstoppers
6. Playing with Fire
7. The Rugrats Movie
8. Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius
9. Rango
10. Lemony Snicket's a series of unfortunate events
11. This film.
19:35 Fun fact: this guy wasn't even DUBBED in the Dutch version of this movie, so you know what they did? They made SpongeBob's Dutch voice actor, speak a little English!
Weird choice for them, but okay.

Not the crossover we needed but the one that we deserved! Also happy birthday Malcolm!!! Thanks for all the laughs and insight! Here's to many more!!
According to the creator, Stephen Hillenberg, this was supposed to be the finale of the series. What I really hope the show does in its final season is lead up to the first movie with the building at the Krusty Krab 2.
Implying it will ever end.
16:03 With the recurring "everything is movie clips" I'm kinda surprised there wasn't the "There's always a bigger fish" line from Phantom Menace
I remember seeing this and the incredibles in theaters on the same day when I was a kid, god I feel old now 😥
Dang you just unlocked a memory for me… it just now clicked that my father, sister and I saw the Incredibles and this movie not on the same day, but only 1-2 days apart (over Thanksgiving weekend that year).
@@superduperm1 That's Awesome, hope it's a good walk down memory lane 👍
I never thought I’d see it, with me own eyes! A nostalgia critic of the SpongeBob movie!

@kristopherprime9837 Yeah, I didn’t get that, either.
A review I never expected but glad it's here. Been a huge Spongebob fan my whole life. Plus it's awesome seeing Phantomstrider
Omg never thought this would happen! So cool seeing the two of you together
phantomstrider is such a wholesome and friendly guy i wanna see him everywhere lol
The fact that the movie will always be the actual ending of the show, is such a cool and comforting thing to know
Hell yeah!
Unless they do something in the show that completely retcons the events of this flilm
14:57 "fucking bubbles" never fails to make me laugh
its been over 10 years since we last had one lmao
Hey two callbacks.
The inner mechanisms of Critic's and Strider's minds will be an enigma for this.
Maybe it’s just me, but seeing PhantomStrider showing up to help review this movie just brings a big smile to my face.
Loved his Tamara possession 😂
Wonderful memories of watching this and the show with my family. My mom took my sister and I to see this opening weekend. The scene where SpongeBob and Patrick dry out, I was squeezing my mothers arm trying not to cry.
16:20
Fun fact: Mindy is actually played by the same voice actress who played Meg in the Brazilian dub of Family Guy and the SpongeBob movie.
So great to see you on the show PhantomStrider! I'm so glad you both collaborated on this review!
If they review together again they should have him possess Tamara as a running gag
This is and always will be my favorite movie. It takes me back to a simpler time when being a kid was just a part of every day life
10:10 BALD BALD BALD!!!!!!!!!! MY EYES!!!!!!!!+
It doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet delivers a timeless message that everyone can understand and enjoy, and if anything that about sums up what the first 3 seasons of the show
I'm 23 and I consider it my 3rd favorite film after Evil Dead 2, and Prince of Egypt.
NC and Phantomstrider? This gonna be good.
I'm always delighted to see a crossover with PhantomStrider, and the movie you chose to review makes it all the more exciting! This film has always been a childhood favorite of mine and I was happy to see just how well it's held up at a recent summer movie screening. Keep it up with the fantastic content, you two!
