I'm sure others have pointed it out too, but another thing that makes the Marge video scene so much more impactful is it ties back to them escaping, when she ran back into their BURNING HOUSE specifically to retrieve their wedding video, implying just how much it mean to her and how much it would mean for her to record over it.

That scene where Marge says goodbye was so heartbreaking, yet it almost got ruined by a joke. The writers originally planned to end Marge’s farewell video to Homer with her asking Bart how to turn off the camera, then she would struggle to stop recording when she eventually manages. Any emotion over that line “Goodbye Homie” would’ve been lost if that was included. 😢

A really touching story line of this movie to me was Bart seeing Ned Flanders as more of a father figure to him than Homer, yet Ned saw how much Homer really cared about Barts feelings towards the end of the movie and helped them reconcile before the bomb exploded. Compared to an episode like 'Home Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily' where he was going to baptise Bart to keep him away from Homer, he really had both Homer and Barts feelings at heart.

The wedding video uses the song Close to You by The Carpenters. This song was used a few times in the season 2 flashback episode "The Way We Was". Homer in high school dislikes the song on the radio and switches it, but it plays later when Homer sees Marge for the first time, and again when Homer is heartbroken to see Marge dancing at prom with Artie. Other episodes would use it, like when Marge bought a doorbell that loops the beginning of the song, which Lisa is concerned about, but Marge insists that "No one could ever get sick of this song" (before realizing she can't turn it off).

Flash forward to a few months ago, my parents VCR ate a movie. While they were trying to figure out which movies they wanted to upgrade, I made a comment about their wedding video, and suggested they get that converted to DVD. Now, here's the fun part. My mom is very old fashioned. She doesn't have a cell phone, and doesn't use the computer except for reading emails. The next time I spoke with Mom and Dad, she had contacted the original place, found out they closed our branch, figured out they did pickups rarely in the area through a charity, and gotten drop off and pick up dates already scheduled. *In total, The Simpsons Movie (2007) took nine years to complete.* This is because Fox greenlit the project back in 1997 but in the years up until release, they had to get the voice cast to sign deals, which they didn't do up until 2001. Producing a final script also took several years because almost 160 different versions were written before choosing the final one as plots were continuously being repurposed for the television episodes.

I interned on this & it kinda was movie by committee. Lots of people were working on both the show & the film at the same time so there was lots of stress & long nights. As an intern they fed us spaghetti dinner so we wouldn’t go home at the end of the day & when I interviewed for a PA position they asked if I owned a sleeping bag so I could sleep under my desk at night (I ended up accepting a different position at the studio than the film). As the due date approached they hired more & more people & outsourced more to places like rough draft.
As a result a lot of the end credits are missing including interns like myself & a background artist who had been with the show since the 2nd episode. If you weren’t part of the last minute crunch there was no guarantee you were in those credits.
Also, since they were used to TV schedules vs a film one the jokes weren’t funny to them anymore after years of working in it. So there were a lot of last minute rewrites of the jokes despite many of the crew saying the jokes were fine & still funny. I helped on a sideshow Bob rake shot but it’s never mentioned anywhere.
But it was an overall fun experience & I wouldn’t trade my time there for anything!

My family waited in an hours long line for the only Quik E Mart in our area (ironically down the street from the permanent Quik E Mart at Universal Studios Hollywood but that wasn't a thing yet). I still have a Buzz Cola can from that original store and I miss the hell out of it because the new Buzz Cola they sell at Universal isn't the same. When we finally watched the movie, I was obsessed with it to the point that I memorized the entire movie, scene for scene, line for line with perfect timing. That's how much I watched this thing. I have not seen it in years but that movie was a staple for me as a kid. Of course, I stopped watching the Simpsons shortly after because even I knew the new episodes were not as good as the old ones. I will say though, the biggest impact for me is that I can't listen to the song "Close to You" without tearing up a little bit. That scene, at least for me, is one of the biggest emotional moments of any movie I've ever seen. Even though you know things are going to work out, it did almost feel like your own family in that moment. So I know it's not the greatest movie or even really a good one, but I hold a soft spot for it because of my nostalgia, not only for that movie, but for the Simpsons as a whole

just an interesting point: back when the movie came out, there was a contest to see which US town or city called Springfield would host the first showing. Because the Simpsons had been on so long, the contest was won by the one state where the residents had only had cable for a comparatively short time and so the franchise was still relatively fresh there - Springfield, Vermont. Our tiny state was the only place where folks still cared enough about the Simpsons that we beat out all the other states to win the honor (seriously, we're TINY - we still haven't broken the million people mark). At the time, I lived (and still live) near Burlington, VT, but I didn't feel like driving over an hour to go see it. I knew it'd be on HBO in less than six months...

I'm not a massive Simpson's fan but I've seen enough to recognize the characters. I frickin LOVE this movie! When it comes to abuse in power in anything, I always quote the "mad with power" line. Marge also says probably the hardest hitting line that I wasn't prepared for and it wasn't the request for a divorce. As Lisa cries at being on the run and having to say goodbye to the boy she likes, Marge says, regarding Lisa's emotions, "You're a woman, you can hold it in forever." Lisa gives a big gulp, a shakey breath, and a quiet, resigned, "Okay." Goddamn, I wasn't ready to be sucker-punched like that as a woman who has held her tongue to the point of passive-aggreasiveness. It was in an attempt to not nag when I've repeatedly asked for something to be done.
But for comedy, the Eskimo woman swinging her breasts to point the way for Homer after his epiphany absolitely killed me, and then she does this heavy breathing over him when he wakes up. He pushes her away and she just keeps making this noise like a walrus while just slowly rolling off screen and again, this about ended me 😂. Homer whipping the hell out of the huskies and yelling "Mush!" began to get comically concerning until the dogs have enough and maul him, which I was not expecting. Maybe this movie didn't have a coherent plot, but I truly do not care. I laugh even just thinking about the movie (aside from Spider-Pig. That can go die in the deepest pits of hell). I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

I really loved this movie when it came out. :)
Not every joke lands, of course, but it had some of the visual jokes that had already started to fade from the show by that point. The scene where the church and Moe's tavern trade audiences was one of the best the show has ever done. And Marge's speech on the wedding video was legitimately heartbreaking.
Honestly, my biggest disappointment came *after* the movie. The Simpsons Movie could've been a turning point for Homer and Marge, where we could've seen the end of Jerkass Homer and a turn back to the more loveable idiot he was in the earlier seasons. I was really disappointed that Nick Riviera didn't stay dead, that we (almost) never saw Spider Pig/Harry Plopper again, and that Colin was forgotten. It felt like the movie had done some work advancing the character arcs, and it was all thrown away.

Stuff like The Simpsons Movie, Fantastic Four 2, Shrek 3, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, TMNT, Transformers, National Treasure 2, 28 Weeks Later, Mr Bean's Holiday, Harry Potter 5, Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum, Ghost Rider, Ocean's 13, Evan Almighty, Die Hard 4, Rush Hour 3, Alien vs Predator 2 and probably other I'm forgetting. Looking back, a lot of these weren't the best but before they were released, I was so excited for them that year

I remember watching this in theater, I was already in my 20's but still got so excited about everything. Ralph Wiggum being part of the Universal opening got me in right away. I tought they did it perfectly. It's a movie made by the Simpsons crew about the Simpsons, nothing more, nothing less. Everything in it felt like what you would expect from a Simpsons movie.

As someone who never grew up with the show (strict parents), this movie was my first real experience with the Simpsons and still the definitive version of them in my mind. So many hilarious jokes that my siblings and I still quote to each other.
"I'm the mascot of an evil corporation!"
"I was elected to lead, not to read."
"This is exactly why we should hate kids!"
"There's something strange about that sop sign."
    "Clap for Alaska!"
"Just cause I like seeing you hurt yourself, I'll give you one on the house."
"You ever tried going mad without power? It's boring, no one listens to you."

I was 7 when this came out, and I and everyone I know loved it/watched it over and over. I think it holds up and has a great pacing/is good for both longtime fans/people who have never seen the show. It has dated a bit, but that also gives it a charm. It is incredibly 2007, and is great to look back on the cultural phenomenon it was when it came out.

I live just off Cooley Road! Born and bred here. Been in Crumlin for my tonsils out and my youngest sister spent a few months there as a toddler with a life threatening mrsa infection. The staff are absolutely real life angels.
It’s really crazy to see Doug shout out to the hospital!
And lol yeah the pronunciation of Tallaght! But in fairness I’ve heard way worse!
Been a fan of NC (and AVGN) since 07/08 and good to know there are some other fans in this neck of the woods!!! Take care mate 👍
Ps to anyone who wants to know Tallaght is pronounced like it rhymes with ‘mallet’ or ‘pallet’ but the second T is silent so it’s ‘ta-la’
Doug did a good job with everything else.
Don’t get me started on some Irish names and their spelling and pronunciation! ‘Sidbh’ is always a good head scratcher! It’s ‘Sive’ rhymes with ‘Drive’! Or how Owen can be spelled Eoghan!
Little tidbit of information for all of you lovely people around the world...
Dublin comes from then words’Dubh Linn’(dove linn) which means Black Pool. Dublin is built on the River Liffey which terminates at the sea so it was a good place for settlers, especially Vikings. There are substantial Viking ruins around the city centre. A branch of the supermarket Lidl has several big sections of glass flooring where you can see Viking foundations and ruins. They couldn’t destroy it or anything so they preserved the site and you can see it and read about it while picking up your bread and milk!

The movie's weakest part was Russ Cargiel. Having more scenes of him expressing his insecurities of the EPA's reputation would have built him up more as an antagonist. It would also justify him going crazy and wanting to blow up the town later in the movie. And his last scene is weird. How he knew where Homer and Bart would land is confusing by itself, but what I really want to know is why his outfit was torn up. Maybe there was a scene where he got attacked by the newly-freed townspeople, but it got cut because there wasn't enough time between the dome shattering and Homer landing for him to get ambushed AND to try to kill Homer. The animators probably didn't have enough time to "fix" his suit.

Like yeah, the first third has very little to do with the rest of the movie. But... A lot of Simpsons episodes are structured like that. Like they have the B-plot first to set up the main plot, rather than both in parallel.

Fun Fact: For the entire month of July 2007, as part of a campaign to hype the July 27th opening of the movie, twelve "7-Eleven" stores all over North America changed their names to Kwik-E-Marts, and begun selling products like Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal, Radioactive Man comics, and Squishees, including WooHoo! Blue Vanilla flavor. One store in Burbank, California reported selling over 57,000 sprinkled donuts matching the one featured in the movie poster. Only one of the twelve locations was in Canada, located in Coquitlam, British Columbia (a suburb near Vancouver).
