    I don't know man, I love Odyssey and all... But I just can't put it above the classic "Mario is missing." Now if you're looking for a masterpiece that is both linear, and open world, that's the best one of them all.

      CasualGamePlayz Yeah that was one I wasn’t sure about. I gave the edge to 64 just because I remembered feeling so much more comfortable with the controls in 64 than I did in Sunshine. Maybe the fact that I used an emulator for 64 and a GameCube for sunshine might have influenced me. I can see how Sunshine is probably better though.

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 7 років тому

      yeah I could see that, on one end you have the great sandbox titles like Odyssey and Sunshine, and the other end you have great linear games like 3, world, and even 3D World (which is just a better Galaxy game personally). And Galaxy is stuck in between not really as either one.

    • @EmmsReality

      Galaxies are the best 3D Mario games, period. 64 is great, Sunshine is flawed, Odyssey is too easy and bloated making moon collections feel trivial. They are all good with sunshine at the bottom. Mgalaxies are the peak of the franchise in 3D.

    The mechanics in Odyssey are going to stand the test of time. Unbelievably fluid, I can't wait to see if Nintendo can top his moveset, it seems like they could refine it in many ways but it's so good right now. Before Odyssey came out, I thought that Galaxy controlled like a dream so you never know!

      Unfriendly Dude Yes, It controls better than galaxy actually, you're right. I know that 64/Sunshine/Odyssey are more sandbox type games with different movesets compared to the other 3d games but I didn't really like Sunshine so I guess I just forgot about it :p

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 7 років тому +4

      Galaxy controls alright, but Mario feels so sluggish and slow in that game then any other, I always prefer the other games (especially Sunshine) for better movement.
      Though the reason Sunshine is so hit-or-miss is that while having some of the best controls and movement options for many players (one of the reasons its one of the top most speedrun games ever), it sadly falls victim to its rushed development (it and Wind waker had notorious development issues) making its level design not always consistent or good.
      So its level design, though not all bad, makes it hard for those who focus more on level/world design than character control, which is why those who disliked Sunshine love Galaxy, because it has the opposite problem.
      Galaxy has structured levels, and quite a lot of them, but its gameplay is slow and pretty bland, but it constantly gives you other gameplay gimmicks so you don't get too tired of the normal controls.
      However I would say that 3D World improves the Galaxy style level design much more, allowing for more secrets and paths so the levels have more depth than just looking pretty, while bringing a more diverse faster moveset akin to 64/sunshine so it never gets too samey/tiring. Though then its a matter of whether you like the open world style or obstacle course style more.

    • @TheAbsol7448
      @TheAbsol7448 7 років тому

      I think I'll like Galaxy's controls more because the long jump and wall jump in Odyssey look kind of lame. ...Same with the dive but that's a little more understandable, because it has to work with Cappy.

    odyssey as just a treat in general, its one the most in-depth and meticulously designed games i have played in recent memory. Yes, some moons are easy to get and really straight forward, but it never feels like too much for me. Finding moons so frequently keeps a certain momentum going, and it makes every little part of the levels that they have designed have purpose. It's a very fulfilling experience

  • @derpcraft9684
    @derpcraft9684 7 років тому +14

    Mario Odyssey is a great game, but it just feels very bare and barren to me. The kingdoms just don't give me the same feel as levels in other Mario games. My experience with Mario Odyssey is that when you're done, you're done. You can't replay bosses or the required moons like you can replay levels in Mario Galaxy or 3D Land/World. Maybe I've just got a linear mind: I do tend to prefer 2d games anyway.

    Since there's hundreds of subpar moons in Odyssey, I can't help but feel Galaxy is a better game. Every star in Galaxy means something, and there's so many interesting ideas done first in Galaxy that maybe haven't even been in the Mario games since. Odyssey is still a dang good game though, don't get me wrong.

    • @heavydonkeykong5190
      @heavydonkeykong5190 7 років тому +2

      well as you get older you are less able to generate nostalgia with new experiences, even if Odyssey was better objectively you wouldn't know because you didn't grow up with it. This is why so many dislike 3D World, despite it being superior to the Galaxy games in almost every way, but gets forgotten so much because everyone was already too old to enjoy it like they could Galaxy.
      The best thing to do is figure out why you like the game beyond nostalgia, and start to understand its shortcomings so you can enjoy other games later on. So for me I love Sunshine, but I know, outside of the nostalgia of its atmosphere and music, that its because of its great gameplay, the controls are great and its moveset varied with a lot of ways go places. But its shortcomings are in its level design, where the main areas are all good, each level or objective within aren't as consistently good.

      Probably because you were sick of the Galaxy style gameplay by then but still enjoyed the Galaxy games because you liked them before, or you were never interested in the gameplay but more the story and atmosphere and 3d World's eviroments didn't appeal to you the way outer space did in Galaxy. 'Cause otherwise I can't see how galaxy was better than 3d World outside of personal preference to the atmosphere.

    (maybe spoilers) it was honestly going to be my favorite Mario game ever, until i found out that after collecting so many moons for the next ‘secret worlds’, they just turned out to be different sides of the moon.. was SO disappointed.. was imagining some amazing Star Worlds that Mario games usually have.. but the moon areas were just so lifeless and dull (in my opinion)
    if it wasn’t for that, I would’ve called it better than Super Mario World on the SNES
    anyway, can’t wait to see what they do with Mario next :)

      Dark Side was annoying to me because of the Broodals/low-gravity thing, but it made up for it (slightly) by putting a bunch of hint art afterwards. I'm a brainteaser nerd, so that was a blast. Darker Side was a nice challenge, for sure. I still have Super Mario Galaxy 2 as my favorite game of all time, but SMO nudged its way into my top 5 (I'm not sure where, though).

      missing chromosomes YES! I was so excited for the Ruined Kingdom because castles and stuff like that is fascinating in video games, but they, ironically, ruined it! There were like 12 moons there total. The pamphlet had a bunch of interesting lore that they didn't build upon. Super disappointing. Same goes for the Cloud Kingdom.

  • @Notethos
    @Notethos 7 років тому +22

    Mario Galaxy 1 is the best. It had compelling characters as far as mario games go and the hub world was at times annoying but still gave a nice/ fitting ambiance. Also levels in galaxy had a nice challenge and sense of development. My first playthrough of odyssey I was genuinely disappointed but went back to try enjoying it more. The problem with odyssey is you have to go out of your way to be challenged. Basically it's main gameplay really only is a series of mini games which don't create much challenge or sense of progression. So objectively I can't say odyssey is a better game, but it's open world and challenges do work to its favor (but again the main game play is lackluster). I will admit that odyssey has a much better replay value than galaxy based off the easy nature of odyssey as a game.

    If you’re comparing sm64 now to smo now, then yeah smo is clearly better. But it’s an unfair comparison, smo is what it is partly because of its history. It’s had all that time to improve on the previous. A fairer way to compare is to look at smo now and compare that to sm64 then. And I think most would agree that sm64 had a much bigger impact on gameplay on release than smo did on its release.

    I actually disagree on odyssey's structure. Until post game it felt really linear, at least to me, as by the time you did the main story in the world (which was basically just a galaxy level) you had enough moons to progress and I hated how until you beat the game the worlds didn't have all the content. Why couldn't you just be let loose to free roam from the start with all the content at your disposal?

    i think that Mario Odyssey was more of a experiment rather than a fully game. See, it combines many things from many past games that can offer a fantastic experience.
    This is like to demonstrate how a game can combine many aspects of a franchise, give more possibilities, and show how amazing the Mario's universe really is and how cool can get in the future. It some kind of Mario Mania.

      That could out do Oddysey.

    Mario Odyssey is rlly good for being non-linear. It has the best controls and you can make your own challenge in stuff like koopa freerunning.
    The Galaxy games have a lesser control scheme, so they can structure the game better. Galaxy has better music
    I think both have equal levels of creativity

    I 100% both 64 and Odyssey. I like 64 better for the only reason of it being more difficult. If you return to Odyssey after playing it to completion, you have to make up your own challenges to continue enjoying the game. Such as completing a Koopa race without jumping. But with 64, you can still do anything the game initially offers and have a difficult time doing it. Odyssey has a lot of quantity content, not quality. Each star in 64 is memorable. I'd rather have a smaller amount of difficult objectives than a large amount of easy objectives.

  • @brianbond3151
    @brianbond3151 7 років тому +13

    Super Mario 64 is really fun to play still, but it's aged extremely poorly. the first half of the game is a blast, but as soon as you get in to the later worlds, the awful camera and physics completely collapse and the controls become a nightmare. The only reason Mario 64 is difficult near the end is because you're literally battling the controls and it's often very difficult to make Mario do what you want him to. The reason stars are much more difficult and less numerous than Moons is because Mario 64 was originally supposed to have a lot more levels, Miyamato wanted at least double. They were cut because of time constraints though, so what you end up with is a lot of stars designed to make you play the entire levels over and over to extend the game length. While it works much better for Mario 64 than a lot of games, it can get tedious to me at times. I've beat Mario 64 dozens of times, but my last playthrough was the time I finally felt like I just got tired of dealing with the games issues. Compare it to something like Ocarina of Time, which has aged much better because it used the exact opposite design of 64 (with the same engine). For a 3d game, your paths and movement are actually extremely limited. You can't even jump unless it's in a designated spot. This completely avoids the problems that Mario 64 had with Cameras / movement / unpredictable bugs and glitches.

      I personally prefer 3d World / Land to any other 3d Mario game, but they're really a 2d Mario game in 3d. I disagree that it's the least Mario like Mario game though and would actually say the opposite. It's an action platformer, like the 2d Mario games and it's the type of 3d Mario game I always wanted Nintendo to make.

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 7 років тому

      64DS does help a lot, I didn't even notice until I compared the 2 and realized I couldn't control the original very well.
      However I feel like OoT aged worse, but maybe thats because Hyrule field's oversized emptiness really soured me on an otherwise pretty good game. (even TP's Hyrule Field or WW's ocean didn't bother me that much comparatively)
      3D World is just an improved Galaxy game, so it totally counts, and is great and underappreciated. Honestly the only game in the series I can't get into anymore (as long as we are using the DS version of 64) is the galaxy games, you just don't have a lot of movement options and Mario is slow anyways, and the level design is linear, but tries to hide it instead of embracing it like 3D world did, so I can't imagine why it's still popular when every other game is better, even the ones that came before like sunshine.

    The thing that makes Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 the best Mario Games for me imo, is that they had SO MANY WORLDS and amazing level design and mechanics. That is something that super Mario odyssey lacks. It forces you to stay in the same world for 10 hours searching relentlessly for moons in order to 100% it, while on the other hand, Super Mario Galaxy takes you through a vey fun and challenging grand adventure across DOZENS of different galaxies, only making you stay there for 30 mins at least for each galaxy. And then I also liked the dardevil, fastfoe, cosmic clone, and speedy comets. They added several extra difficult challenges in the game, and It added more variety to the game.

    But all of you odyssey haters, most of you don't like it because of one thing; it's too easy. I personally don't agree with this statement, but I have a way of getting around it none the less; try doing the major runs of the game, such as no jumping, no damage, minimal captures, no coins, combinations of those runs, or a separate run that interests you. These runs make odyssey so much more difficult, and if you think it is easy, try one out.

    I'm glad people are enjoying Odyssey but I sometimes get bored with it and will take breaks playing it in favor of Zelda, Doom, and indie games.
    Because Odyssey is a collect-athon and not as platforming focus. I don't have to platform to stomp a moon in the ground.
    That's disappointing because Odyssey has the best handling gameplay.
    I in some ways prefer Mario 3D World because it's platforming. I prefer a bunch of short variety of levels versus moons. And I'd rather finish crown world with all 5 characters than collect all the moons.
    You should of named this favorite 3D Mario.
    I think Mario World and Mario 3 would crush the 3D list, that's why they were left out. 😉 Odyssey still great though.

    You're trying very hard not to let Galaxy beat Odyssey and it's showing. Remember, this is objective, and you cannot objectively say that exploration is better than linear. I think that there are too many moons in Odyssey that don't add anything to the game, they're just there. Busy work. Galaxy had more unique experiences for each level, and more levels. None of them were just there because the developers found it easy to put a star somewhere. Even when they simply hid a star like Odyssey, it was a)hidden, and b)took effort to make.

    I'd probably prefer Galaxy. Linear games are better than open ended games. That's just a fact.
    I have a life, I don't need a ton of freedom AKA busy work and time wasting to do what I want in a game. I play games to have a great experience. Linear games have better experiences because they're more focused on delivering one rather than expecting the player to make their own. Plain and simple.
    95 times out of 100 I'd rather have a linear game. I like to space out my super open mega world games because otherwise they'd get boring so quickly and they take too long to play anyways. I still haven't finished Fallout 4. Not because I don't love the game, I really do actually. It's because a million different games have come out since Fallout came out, many of which I had to play. I'm not going to let that happen with Zelda BoTW though and I won't have to since it's portable which makes it much easier to keep up with.

    No. Odyssey is great but it's unbelievably short and packed with tons of filler. Hell 90% of the moons are given out for buying them, talking to people, ground pounding something shiny, a bunch of monotonous, boring, worthless moons basically just to get to 999. The purple coins are just kind of out there in the open or over a cliff, etc. The bosses are also forgettable.
    Compared to Galaxy 1/2 it's just ok. It has superior mechanics but everything else is lacking. It is a very basic collect-a-thon. Even when compared to N64 games, which is saying a lot.

    And yes hell yes hell fucking yes I think Odyssey is better than Mario 64. And I'm not knocking on Mario 64 in anyway. After all Mario 64 is one of the best video games I've ever played but come on now. Taking off the Retro goggles and looking at the game for what it really is wall taking into effect how platformers of changed over the years. Because just because its a classic, it doesn't make Mario 64 any less immune to flaws. Of course one of the biggest flaws I can think of of Mario 64 is the goddamn camera. That camera is so freaking annoying. Then there's also the fact that the levels are pretty damn short. Mario has a limited moveset that while revolutionary in 1996, feels way more constricted when compared to something like Odyssey. And let's talk about boss battles, ridiculously simple and easy and of course there's the linear nature of the game. But then again, even years ago I thought Mario Sunshine was better than Mario 64 in Odyssey I feel like is better than Mario Sunshine. Or at least it's a tie.

      Justin Drysdale even this game has flaws just like the others have. It does *not* recapture the Magic of 64 and Sunshine at all. I'd say Super Mario 64 is considerably more mind blowing for it's time then Odyssey. Odyssey takes a lot of functionality from Galaxy (spinning the controller to use Cappy), and doesnt cross the same gap that 64 does when you consider it is the sequel to Super Mario World.
    Odyssey is a fantastic game and I have not been able to put it down, but I don't want to discredit 64 as it started a lot of the mechanics used in modern 3D Mario games.
    I feel like Galaxy is very discredited in this video, the platforming is very revolutionary and I think that trumps the non-sandbox gameplay. It is a very simple game as far as difficulty, but I totally agree that the linear gameplay has it's fair share of pro's and con's. For young players, it's definitely a great game that shows the player how to explore, and isn't as broad and complex as Odyssey.

It does have a lot of gimmicks, but those are meant to distract you from the bad platforming, unlike the other games whose gimmicks add to the platforming and controls. GBDupree 3D World was a multiplayer 3Dish Mario game that felt more like a 2D or 2.5D platformer rather than 3D, while yes Galaxy is linear, its gameplay and Level Design at least *adapted to what it was*, which Odyssey didnt at all (to me anyways).

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 7 років тому +2

      3D world was just as much 3d as Galaxy, it just didn't try to hide the fact it was linear and instead embraced it allowing for more involved platforming challenges (also helped by having more moves like 64/sunshine did that galaxy took away). And it still did have more open areas too.
      I'm not quite sure what you mean by "adapted to what it was" though.

      GBDupree Nothing, that's just it: the music and atmosphere. Also the level design.

    To be honest I prefer the length of galaxy 1 and 2, but the freedom and gameplay does keep it at a close tie for me between odyssey and galaxy (odyssey having the better gameplay and freedom)

  • @denisruskin348

    I prefer the linearity in Galaxy 2 and the platforming overall. Odyssey has the same issue as some open world games, I just get bored after spending some time in a map looking for 50 moons.

    Okay I’m going say this. I love Mario Odyssey it’s like a great game like 10/11 let me go over the pros and the con.
    Pros
    -Metro Kingdom is just an accurate take on NYC good job Nintendo :)
    -For the people who find the game not challenging there’s a level called “Darker Side”, this level was very difficult, I would recommend it to people who want a challenge or galaxy fans anyways
    -Visuals, just look at this game it’s looks like galaxy but boost up the budget by 9000 $. I really love it
    -You can do cool challenges, (this is for people who like the game) if you played odyssey a million times there’s challenges you can do, right now I’m attempting if you can beat the get without touching a coin, or you can do no jumping?
    -Soundtrack. This soundtrack is just my favourite. For example the metro kingdom music is just so amazing, you know that the creators are putting lots of effort into this game if you just hear this soundtrack.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Con
    - The dang kingdoms, the following kingdoms are the ones that I don’t dislike but just not interested in, Snow kingdom, Snow kingdom, lost kingdom (well what do you expect it only has 3 moons) , food kingdom.( I loved food but the world played out disappointing).
    And that’s it this is my opinion if someone comments “Oh odyssey sucks and galaxy is better” I’m going flip. I don’t think anyone will see this but I’m putting my feelings about the game.

    No. The game is massively overrated in my opinion. Not challenging and sure people will say getting all the moons is hard which I agree but story wise this doesn’t stack up to previous Mario titles. Bring on Mario sunshine Hd with a better camera I say

    • @AceFondu

      There's some pretty tough levels in the game, not sure you've done them yet. I'd say it had harder things in it than anything in Mario 64 unless you count bad camera angles as "challenge." It had harder stuff than Galaxy or Galaxy 2, though their "hardest" levels were harder than this one. I'd say the only harder 3D Mario is Sunshine and that's only counting some of the non-water pack levels, pachinko, lava boat, and poison river leaf level. *shudder*

    • @Gamesforus1
      @Gamesforus1 7 років тому +1

      Sunshine IMO was the easiest. The leaf level is overrated, why? Because you can walk on the rails and use the hiver nozzel and completely cheese the Shine. Most of the levels arent that challenging outside of 1 or 2 secret stages.
      IMO, Super Mario 3D Woeld is the hardest.

    I thought Odyssey was an extremely overrated game. Playing it I had fun and thought it was pretty well made but the moons are so forgettable. They keep using the same ideas throughout the WHOLE game and the difficulty never highs up. The possessions are in their majority, previous Mario power ups but with limited mobility. And others are just not well used. Wow you can be a T-Rex and... Destroy some stone blocks?

      Pretty much how i felt about the game before i reached the 'endgame'. Im having more fun with it now I have access to every Moon in every world and can get them whenever i want, in what order i want.

      agree. It's slowly become more acceptable to call Odyssey overrated. Post this around the time it got released you'd get slaughtered. I had my fun with it, but I've not gone back since I beaten it and did 2-3 hours or post game. I just didn't find the challenges fun, and didn't really care to explore these kingdoms. 999 moons is just excessive.

    The Sunshine hate…triggers me every time. lol smh I LOVED FLUDD. Went back and played the game a year ago…STILL LOVE FLUDD. It was the first time we got a companion who advanced the platforming and redefined the parameters of Mario’s jumping ability (Not a loose comparison at all…it’s exactly the same lol ). It even gains new abilities (albeit far LESS) throughout the gameplay which allow you to complete different missions and even discover secrets in the game…just like Cappy. It was the early version of this which was continued throughout the Galaxy games.
    On top of this, the feeling of moving around by diving, sliding, then fludding over enemies or even using the different FLUDD abilities felt GREAT to me. It also added a shooting element into the platforming (which is not going to be everyone’s thing…but I personally liked it and feel that it isn’t OBJECTIVELY bad).
    This whole “These childhood games aren’t as good as you think they were” argument to make Odyssey into the end all be all is getting very annoying lol I LOVE Odyssey, I personally feel that it is the better overall game…right now. lol The dust has barely settled, and we haven’t gotten to see how it will age AT ALL. Most of the issues with it are that it’s too much of a collectathon for very little reward, and that will definitely come more into play as time takes its toll on the game. In the meantime…let’s not take others power ups, so that our game stands taller. lol

    • @Braillionaire
      @Braillionaire 6 років тому

      Last thing…Galaxy is not REALLY an open world game. It’s a Sandbox game…with REALLY BIG Sandboxes lol Don’t get me wrong, it’s DOPE! Again, probably the best 3D game imo at the time, but it’s not open world. You can exhaust the actual space quite easily. The fun comes from exploration within the fairly frequent walls, and entering into sub-sandboxes within those walls as well. It’s a Sandbox adventure with the aesthetic of an open world game. One COULD argue that the Mario 64 castle felt more open world (although it was clearly a hub) than Galaxy. In said hub, you actually find tons of secrets (including other worlds and sandboxes). Things happen there. What do you do on the ship?…Fly to other Sandboxes lol It’s just stage selection. I don’t understand how THAT is open world, while Galaxy (though not quite as expansive as 64 in the ways I’ve mentioned) is not.
