videos like this are what happen when you give creatives the ability to create stuff about things they're actually passionate about. you can really tell felix loves the super mario series. great video felix. here's to many more!
Team Super Mario World here. One thing I felt like wasn't mentioned enough in the video is how Secret Exits worked in Super Mario World. You see that red dot on the map. You know there is a secret exit. You then dedicate your entire childhood to finding the Secret Exit in Cheese Bridge. Er, wait, maybe that was just me. While there were Warp Zones in SMB and Warp Whistles in SMB3, the Secret Exits leading to branching paths, shortcuts, switch palaces, etc. changed not just Mario but the platforming genre as a whole. Honestly though, after loving Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I am dying for a new Mario game. How long are they going to make us wait?
I think Odyssey is my personal favourite, but I have a real soft spot for Sunshine. There's just something about the setting and style of the whole game, that makes it an unforgettable adventure. Even if it was a bit rushed and unfinished.

Excellent. There’s been an uptick of Odyssey slander in recent years by “hot take” Twitter Tweeters and I’m glad to see content in rebuttal of that utter nonsense.
It's not a hot take to find Odyssey's mission designs to be far worse than SM64 and the Galaxy games. Kicking rocks, jumping rope, and sitting on benches isn't everyone's idea of a fun platformer.
@@siphillis you have to admit that even with the simpler missions like those, there are plenty of moons that are well-placed and challenging to find/earn. If anything, those other moons are just bonuses to keep the worlds from feeling barren of collectibles
@@papaG6423 There are good Moon challenges along the critical path, but that's a small fraction of the total content in the game, and few of them feel as carefully crafted as a typical Star in SM64 or Galaxy 1/2.
@@siphillis I admit that some of the moons trade quality for quantity, but I just feel that they're still fun to collect simply because they promote exploring each world since they're typically spread apart. That is where the enjoyment comes from in my eyes. Plus, there are a solid 700ish moons in the game, and I'd say at the very least 120 of those are well designed, which is on par with the past 3D games (except Galaxy 2 with its Green Stars included). I respect your opinion, and I totally understand what you mean, but this is just my 2¢
Bowser as Palpatine? Lol! Awesome video! This brought such joy to my day today. I could not stop laughing. You are doing an amazing job. Keep up the great work! (no pressure, lol!) PS- Interesting, Mario gets to ride Yoshi, who is a dinosaur, and then in Mario Odyssey he gets to become a T-Rex, also a dinosaur. Someone at Nintendo was having a creative moment... hmmmmm...
My personal top 10: 1) Mario Maker 1 + 2 (just gonna bundle these together so they don't take two spots, ha ha) 2) Super Mario 3 3) Super Mario 64 4) Super Mario Galaxy 5) Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (with emphasis on Bowser's Fury as that side game needs more attention) 6) Super Mario World 7) Super Mario Odyssey 8) Super Mario Bros. 9) New Super Mario Bros. 10) Super Mario Sunshine
I had never played Mario Galaxy until 3D All Stars came out, and I have to say that that game was an absolute masterpiece, way ahead of its time. Such care was put into absolutely every level! And it had a pretty great story for a Mario game! I didn't get any of that from Odyssey. Sure, it was still a very good 3D platformer, but it felt more like an homage to previous Mario games, rather than a new experience. The biggest innovation was the enemy capture mechanic, which was fun for some enemies, but fell short for others (e.g. tank). Even though the Cappy throw was a welcome addition to Mario's move set, I did not enjoy the control scheme one bit; it just doesn't work that well. Perhaps one of my biggest complaints is that a lot of places felt barren and abandoned, the worst of which was Peach's castle in the Mushroom Kingdom bonus world. It is completely empty, and that made me genuinely sad. The multiplayer experience was also lacking. Other than that, SMB3 is my favorite Mario game of all time, but I realize that SMW is objectively a better game; it's just not the game I grew up with. So my objective ranking would be... #1. Super Mario Galaxy #2. Super Mario World #3. Mario Maker 2 #4. Mario 3D World / Bowser's Furry... er... Fury #5. Super Mario Bros. 3 #6. Super Mario Odyssey #7. Super Mario 64 ...and others behind it
For me I absolutely love 64 and Sunshine for nostalgic reasons but i honestly think with time Odyssey will have me feeling the same way. And if I'm being honest Odyssey is more enjoyable for myself and I'd go back to it before the other 2 titles. With that said tho Galaxy still remains Supreme at the number one spot. The concept & music of it just makes it another worldly experience

Makes me sad not to see Super Mario Bros 2 in here. I think you could easily bump one of the "New" series games off this list and add the unique classic that SMB2 is.
Its an unpopular opinion, but I don't think the 80s Mario games (other than maybe Mario 3) have held up that well, idk why they're held in such high regard other than nostalgia and significance in the industry.
If you have nostalgia for it sure. As someone who doesn't have nostalgia (born in 96), I played all the older games, and SMB2 is a bad game. The only one out of the NES titles I did not enjoy
@@omargh18 It's not a bad game simply because you don't like it, it's like if I said odyssey was a bad game because I enjoyed it much less than galaxy 2. I don't have that much nostalgia for SMB2 and I think it's the most unique out of the three, Also does that mean you actually enjoyed Japanese Mario 2?
Great list. I see the next Mario game being an expansion of Bower's Fury. An open world game with hubs of platforming goodness a la Galaxy and 3D World.
Great video essay, Felix! This is such a hard list to make. Nostalgia pulls at everyone differently. More me, my top 3 are. Mario Bros 3 Mario 64 Super Mario Land (Gameboy) There are whole generations of games I missed, but these are my favorites because of the memories.
First of thank you! Second, yeah it is really hard to make a list like this because everyone grew up with different mario games, and they will hold the ones they grew up with very dear. I tried to justify every games ranking as well as a could, but i know for some the list is all wrong (and that is ay okay!)
Trust me. I got hooked on Mario when my maternal grandmother gave him to me. Since then I've been playing Mario games my whole life, especially *Odyssey.* Thanks for sharing this with us, mate.
Funny how tastes differ. To me (yes, I‘m 44 years old…), Super Mario Odyssee is in third place at best. In my humble opinion SMW and SMB3 as well as SM64 are far more "essential" as SMO is. Stellar graphics and the open world concept aren‘t always decisive, I guess. But then again, I would take "The Legend of Zelda - A Link to The Past" over "Breath of The Wild" without hesitation. That being said, great video! 👍
My first video game experience ever was at 4 years old in 1995 with Super Mario World on the SNES. Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 & Super Mario Sunshine are my top 3 Mario games of all time.
Sunshine is great, imo. Maybe not the best Mario game ever created, but I'll never understand why some people hate it. Odyssey and Galaxy are my favorites, hard to choose between those two.
I don't hate it, but imo it's the weakest of the 3D games. Atmosphere and presentation is amazing, but the jankyness of the controls and forcing you to get Shines in a set order in each world just made it less great than it could have been. Also don't get me started on the blue coins. There's a lot to love in Sunshine, but there's also a lot to dislike, hence why so many people aren't into it.
My favorites would be Super Mario World since I first played it on the GBA means a lot to me then played the N64 and Mario 64 amazed me it was cool playing Mario in a 3D Space. During the DS era New Super Mario Bros is definitely a good comfort food game it feels good playing it again and again the platforming is good plus the minigames are great as well my favorite are the Gambling Luigi games.
Even though I don't agree with your list, I wish that people on UA-cam did the great kind of work and research you did for this video. Great job dude, keep going! PS. Super Mario World, Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3 are my top 3. Fight me! ❤
Glad to see SMO at #1. The game feels somehow underrated. I think the core platforming and jumping is the best it’s ever been, and that’s what the core of the series has always been, and what made the first SMB and SM64 such classics. The great level design, graphics, and soundtrack make it a masterpiece.
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are, in my opinion, the best Mario games ever. Both are just another gravy, the story in both games, the galactical ambience, the emotional soundtrack, level variety, epic and beautiful views, their unique essence. Even Rosalina story in the first game made me cry when I first opened my heart to it. Ever since no other Mario game has been able to surpass Galaxy, and, to this day, listening to Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 themes brings tears to my face. Galaxy saga has the essence that even Odyssey couldn't reach. Both Galaxys' are literally "out of this world"!
Fantastic video that brought back so many fond Mario gameplay memories. One thing tho - can we please have Nintendo update their online borders with the NL logo?
Great list Felix and everyone else! I just think nsmb ds should be higher. That’s easily the best nsmb game in my opinion. I hope you do this for more series like Zelda or Kirby!
Pity Super Mario Bros. 2 is not on the list, it's my favourite Mario game for the NES. Ah, Mario has been to space before, he's been on the Moon in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. And Koopas already lost their shell you could use as weapon in the first Super Mario Bros.
I will go against the video, but also against the comment section on this one. SMG 2 is just better than the first one, and I'm sorry if you don't agree, but it just is. It's polished to hell and back, more varied, more content, freaking Yoshi, and lacking the horrible blue stars (which is a plus). I see absolutely no downside to SMG 2 and I don't see why people think the first one is better
This is a really good list with pretty solid logic backing it up. The only quirk I see with it is that the Mario Galaxy games are not sequentially listed. You describe the second one as basically and extension of the first but with a few fantastically added extras (like Yoshi, etc). Based on your consideration, they should be sequential instead of on positions 5 and 3. It's puzzling to see Mario Maker 2 stuck in between.
Glad new super Mario bros wii is getting respect, just past 3d world, I also love how you love 3d world and Mario sunshine. Mario galaxy is my favorite Mario game. Agree with your opinion.
Awesome video! My personal favourite is really hard to say honestly as I love them all. Its certainly a toss up between 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 though
Great video! Loved the little gags here and there like stealing Alex's "Let's dive into things" Lot's of in depth info here. Only thing I wanted to comment is that Mario Maker 2 dropped the custom player icons (Sonic, BabyMetal et al) and that's kinda sad...
1 mario galaxy 2 mario Sunshine 3 mario 64 ds 4 mario bros 3 5 mario Odyssey 6 mario land 2 6 golden coins 7 mario 3d land 8 mario galaxy 2 9 yoshis island 10 mario 1
I have a love/hate relationship with Super Mario 64. The aged camera and controls are frustrating, and some levels and enemy placements are mind numbing. But it’s a cozy game, has charming worlds and music, speed runs for this game are pure art, and what other game allows you to punch as Mario? And the whole journey is a climb to the top of the castle and exploring the castle as the hub world is a lot of fun. And the DS version is criminally underrated. You get to play as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario.

Super Mario Odyssey Honestly though I don't like putting the 3D and 2D games in the same category, I love them for different reasons. I also separated Bowser's Fury into it's own entry because I love it so much more than 3D World.
Good listing. Not sure I would've included the Mario maker titles as, while they can _play_ like a normal Mario game, _playing_ the levels is less important than _making_ them, which makes the Maker games more of a spin-off series. Without the the Maker titles, I would've included Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in the place of Mario Maker 2, and Super Mario Bros. 2 in the place of Maker 1. _"But ChaaaoootiicHooly!"_ a select few of you ask in an obnoxious, nasally, know-it-all voice. _"Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't _*_really_*_ a Mario game! Depict Princess Peach _as a blonde in America_ in the manual (something not seen again until the ending of Super Mario World). 2. A manual that _also_ includes exclusive art, from Nintendo of Japan, for the four playable characters. 3. A game that, for the first time, _doesn't_ depict Mario & Luigi as palatte-swap twins. 4. A game whose all-new visual design of Luigi has been used _mostly_ ever since (sot in Super Mario Bros.3, but used in the ending-on in Super Mario World). 5. A game featuring different control physics for each of the playable characters that has been used in multiple games since (most obviously seen in Super Mario 3D World). 6. A game that's the first to depict Luigi as _any_ sort of 'dork' (as exampled in the way his legs kick wildly whenever he jumps). 7. A game that includes enemies seen throughout the series ever since (starting with Pokey & Bob-omb in Super Mario Bros. 3). ...And that's not including multiple "firsts" in Super Mario Bros. 2 used in Mario spin-off titles, such as Peach's move set in the Smash series. If anything, I daresay Doki Doki Panic is a reskin of Nintendo's first attempt at a Super Mario Bros. sequel, but was deemed _too_ different from the original game and shelved until Nintendo of America came calling after being supremely unimpressed with the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (which looks and plays less of a true sequel and more of a "Oh crap we need a sequel, like, _tomorrow_ but we just shelved what we were going to use! Love it. Love sunshine and 64 to death.
Though I must say there’s something magical about super Mario world snes.
Maybe it was my age at the time but it has a sort of cryptic mystery to it I adore.
Could be the way you uncovered the map. it just felt so incredibly explorative.
Odyssey is definitely my favorite tied with World, 3D World and Bros 3.
1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Mario 64
4. SMW 2: Yoshi's Island
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Super Mario Sunshine
8. Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES All-Stars)
9. Super Mario Bros. (SNES All-Stars)
10. Super Mario Bros. 2 (SNES All-Stars)
11. Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury
12. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
13. Super Mario Bros. 2 (Lost Levels)
14. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Thank You Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is one of my favorite game ever !
My fav Felix quote "nail so many things out of the box"
Someone at Nintendo was having a creative moment... hmmmmm...
My personal top 10:
1) Mario Maker 1 + 2 (just gonna bundle these together so they don't take two spots, ha ha)
2) Super Mario 3
3) Super Mario 64
4) Super Mario Galaxy
5) Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (with emphasis on Bowser's Fury as that side game needs more attention)
6) Super Mario World
7) Super Mario Odyssey
8) Super Mario Bros.
9) New Super Mario Bros.
10) Super Mario Sunshine
Amazing video! Excellent quality!!! 😃
I love how sonic appeared when you told us about Mario's rolling skills
Mario Odyssey at number 1, all is forgiven 😌
Sunshines deserves much better from this list lol, but this was very well done & entertaining to watch.
#1. Super Mario Galaxy
#2. Super Mario World
#3. Mario Maker 2
#4. Mario 3D World / Bowser's Furry... er... Fury
#5. Super Mario Bros. 3
#6. Super Mario Odyssey
#7. Super Mario 64
...and others behind it
For me I absolutely love 64 and Sunshine for nostalgic reasons but i honestly think with time Odyssey will have me feeling the same way. And if I'm being honest Odyssey is more enjoyable for myself and I'd go back to it before the other 2 titles. With that said tho Galaxy still remains Supreme at the number one spot. The concept & music of it just makes it another worldly experience
26: Super Mario Clash
25: New Super Mario Bros. 2
24: Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels
23: Super Mario Run

Makes me sad not to see Super Mario Bros 2 in here. I think you could easily bump one of the "New" series games off this list and add the unique classic that SMB2 is.
Its an unpopular opinion, but I don't think the 80s Mario games (other than maybe Mario 3) have held up that well, idk why they're held in such high regard other than nostalgia and significance in the industry.
@@LexVanguard2004 smb2 still holds up pretty well
If you have nostalgia for it sure.
@@LexVanguard2004 And I don't know why people like Odyssey so much so I guess we're both confused.
Felix mate
You're doing a bang on job
Keep it up!
Great video, and some great selections. Mario 3 is my personal favorite and i still play it to this day.
Nothing beats Super Mario world on the SNES, it's just perfection! Love the other games as well
I like the atmosphere of galaxy 1 more because it really feels like a space adventure BUT the level design in 2 is superior though
Great list. I see the next Mario game being an expansion of Bower's Fury. An open world game with hubs of platforming goodness a la Galaxy and 3D World.
You are the man Felix. Keep up the great work!
Great video essay, Felix! This is such a hard list to make. Nostalgia pulls at everyone differently. More me, my top 3 are.
Mario Bros 3
Mario 64
Super Mario Land (Gameboy)
There are whole generations of games I missed, but these are my favorites because of the memories.
Odyssey is phenomenal. There is literally nothing that compares.
I think Galaxy matches it in quality tbh, they're just so different that you get unique playing experiences, which is great.
Marios first travel to space was 1992 not 2007. in Mario Land 2 he visits the Moon.
Super Mario 64 is number one for me
Great video, Felix!
I finally got a Switch last year, the first game I got was Mario Odyssey. It was such a trip, I loved it! It was the first game that I actually 100%.
Awesome video, really makes me appreciate just how fantastic most of these games are, I cannot wait to see where mario goes next!
My first video game experience ever was at 4 years old in 1995 with Super Mario World on the SNES. Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 & Super Mario Sunshine are my top 3 Mario games of all time.
Very BOLD Felix for taking on this video haha love your vids. Felix is perfect for Nintendo Life 🔥 🍄
Sunshine is great, imo. Maybe not the best Mario game ever created, but I'll never understand why some people hate it.
Odyssey and Galaxy are my favorites, hard to choose between those two.
Too janky, needed more time.
What can I say, 3D Mario is just so difficult to rank because even the "worst" ones are precious gems.
I don’t hate SMS but I didn’t really care much for the music, npcs, and the controls during those block jumping sections without FLUDD.
17:07 - I had no idea Bowser was really a Sith Lord
The way those Mario games innovative makes them inspiring each time
My favorites would be Super Mario World since I first played it on the GBA means a lot to me then played the N64 and Mario 64 amazed me it was cool playing Mario in a 3D Space. During the DS era New Super Mario Bros is definitely a good comfort food game it feels good playing it again and again the platforming is good plus the minigames are great as well my favorite are the Gambling Luigi games.
24:42 "and, if you wiggle your stick enough..." 😂
The Bowser and Peach skit was perfect 10/10 🤣
Even though I don't agree with your list, I wish that people on UA-cam did the great kind of work and research you did for this video. Great job dude, keep going! PS. Super Mario World, Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3 are my top 3. Fight me! ❤
Super Mario 2: Yoshi's Island should have been on the list...at the top! My fav! Great vid.
You know what he's had funny jokes im alright with this guy
Glad to see SMO at #1. The game feels somehow underrated. I think the core platforming and jumping is the best it’s ever been, and that’s what the core of the series has always been, and what made the first SMB and SM64 such classics. The great level design, graphics, and soundtrack make it a masterpiece.
I see people popping up dissing it sometimes i forget its one of the most beloved games of all time.
@@Wienerdog5 same. It’s pretty underrated nowadays.
@@traviscunningham7062 i have no idea how that came to be
@@Wienerdog5 it’s probably because of Joseph’s Super Mario Odyssey rant.
@@traviscunningham7062 oh yeah that terrible excuse for an opinion. It wasnt a good video at all.
Todays my bday and u blessed me TYSM love y’all 🥺
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are, in my opinion, the best Mario games ever.
It’s actually insane that both Mario Maker games are in here and Super Mario Bros 2 is not. It’s my top Mario game
Sunshine and galaxy are my favourites, I still find them so special
Great video felix!!
Thanks a lot James!
It's funny you mention the enemies dancing in New Super Mario Bros. I always thought it was weird to kill something that's dancing
I don't like those phallic-nosed creatures from Sunshine. What were they thinking.
Glad new super Mario bros wii is getting respect, just past 3d world, I also love how you love 3d world and Mario sunshine. Mario galaxy is my favorite Mario game. Agree with your opinion.
Amazing video, thank you!
2:18/2:20 omfg this transition is just… AHHHHHH!!!
Couldn’t agree more!!! 🙏
Awesome video! My personal favourite is really hard to say honestly as I love them all. Its certainly a toss up between 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 though
Super Mario Bros 3! Childhood memories always been top spot for me.
Galaxy should definitely be number 1
For me, Odyssey should.
Favorite line in this video ~ 22:59
Hahaha, i love that part as well. Sounds like i have a filter on or something. I couldn't replicate it even if i tried😂
Great list, sad that Yoshi's Island SMW2 didn't make the cut tho :'(
Great video! Loved the little gags here and there like stealing Alex's "Let's dive into things"
Lot's of in depth info here.
Only thing I wanted to comment is that Mario Maker 2 dropped the custom player icons (Sonic, BabyMetal et al) and that's kinda sad...
17:06 had me dying 😂
Super Mario World is one of the first games I ever played as kid alongside Donkey Kong Country.
1 mario galaxy
2 mario Sunshine
3 mario 64 ds
4 mario bros 3
5 mario Odyssey
6 mario land 2 6 golden coins
7 mario 3d land
8 mario galaxy 2
9 yoshis island
10 mario 1
I have a love/hate relationship with Super Mario 64. The aged camera and controls are frustrating, and some levels and enemy placements are mind numbing.
But it’s a cozy game, has charming worlds and music, speed runs for this game are pure art, and what other game allows you to punch as Mario? And the whole journey is a climb to the top of the castle and exploring the castle as the hub world is a lot of fun. And the DS version is criminally underrated. You get to play as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario.
Here's my personal list as of this moment:
22. Super Mario Bros. 2 JP
21. Super Mario Bros. 2 USA
20. Super Mario Sunshine
19. Super Mario Land
18. New Super Mario Bros. U
17. New Super Mario Bros. 2
16. Super Mario Run
15. Super Mario Bros.
14. Super Mario Land 2
13. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
12. Super Mario Maker
11. Super Mario 3D Land
10. Super Mario 3D World
09. New Super Mario Bros.
08. Super Mario Maker 2
07. Super Mario Galaxy 2
06. Super Mario Galaxy
05. Bowser's Fury
04. Super Mario 64
03. Super Mario World
02. Super Mario Bros. 3
01. Super Mario Odyssey
Honestly though I don't like putting the 3D and 2D games in the same category, I love them for different reasons. I also separated Bowser's Fury into it's own entry because I love it so much more than 3D World.
Super Mario World is the best game ever made in my humble opinion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
The best Super Mario game is Super Mario. Enough said.
It's just a reskinned Doki Doki Paaaaaaniic!"_
Hmm, yes, quite ri...oh, wait. No, no, you're 100% incorrect.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is the first game to:
Does anyone have any ideas? What? You've been working in your spare time on a _challenge hack_ of the first game? Pack it & ship it, we're saved!").
_"But ChaaaoootiicHooly!"_ a select few of you ask in an obnoxious, nasally, know-it-all voice again. _"That's just stupid! Look at how different Super Mario Bros. 2 is to Super Mario Brooooo~ooo~oooos.!!!"
Hmm, yes, quite ri...oh, wait. No, no, that's actually incredibly and very wrong. Explain Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
_"Stop using looooooogiiic!"_
Nintendo considers them mainline releases
I agree that Super Mario World and Odyssey are the best 2D and 3D Mario games. I’d flip-flop their rankings. It is my opinion (and my opinion only) that Mario World I’d the best Mario game ever.
Agreed.
How is Yoshi's Island not on this list???
Also great work on the video Felix.
I’ve lived through every generation of Mario, and I can honestly say I really don’t care for odyssey, it’s a fun game but it’s not Mario. The galaxy games are far superior
