Super Mario Odyssey is a 3D platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. An installment in the Super Mario series, the story follows Mario and Cappy, a spirit that possesses Mario's hat and allows him to take control of other characters and objects, as they set on a journey across various worlds to save Princess Peach from his nemesis Bowser, who plans to marry her.

I got my own switch recently and Odyssey this weekend. I beat it within 3 days straight but that’s just how hooked I was. It’s an absolutely phenomenal game.
I’m absolutely in love with it, the music
, and Nintendo again. I’ve felt like I really missed out for the longest time with this game.
I think it’s probably the best 3D Mario game I’ve ever played since 64. I also hope the movie takes from this game with its charm.

I just got a switch oled and im experiencing it for the first time, haven’t played a mario game since super mario sunshine , so this is a whole new world for me , i also got super mario u deluxe for that 2d experience .

Came here after I supposedly "Completed" this game with 900 moons collected. When I heard that you unlock an ultimate ending after collecting 999, I slumped in my chair a little bit. I think I'll save that coin grind for another time.
Grample Gust If you grind on Browsers castle you can get the coins rather quick. It'd be a weird 30 minutes spent but then you have it 100%ed

I don't understand people being angry at the number of Moons per stage.
This is still a game that should be possible to be played by children and adults alike. Thus, there's a lot of VERY easy Moons to find everywhere for kids,but a fair bit of challenge for adults too. I understand that "back in the day" we had it harder etc., but what's wrong with this current way? If a kid falls in love with the game, he'll go for 100% completion. If he just plays for fun and less for challenge - he can still enjoy the full game.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. People tend to forget that these games are also designed for children to play as well. So yeah, a large majority of the game is going to feel easy because it has to stay both fun and engaging.

My thoughts exactly. Things made to be enjoyed by everyone will have things made for children that are too easy for you. It is not an insult to you, but a stepping stone for some small child somewhere to be able to move on to more difficult things later on.
And to be fair, back in the day, things weren't exactly much harder anyway
People keep mentioning the easiness of getting some moons and I feel they are missing the point. The quality of difficulty of the moons is for the casual player with the difficulty setting built into the game of more difficult moons. That moon is too hard for you to get? Don't worry it's not required to beat the stage. You want to 100% this stage? Well good luck and you'll have to know all of Mario's tricks to do it. The easy moons are great fun for my 7 year old when he plays and I can still get a great challenge on finding the harder moons and some of the more difficult platforming. It provides both children and adults with a great gaming experience tailored to their skill levels without having to have a difficulty setting built into the game. (I know they have assist mode, but even my 7 year old didn't want to play that)
I get that, but there's a difference between possessing a bullet bill and flying over to a moon in the air, and then there's just getting a moon by talking to someone. A chunk of these moons could have been removed and I think the accessiblilty would still have been the same.

No I understand what he's saying about the easiness of the moons being there for newbies, I believe that Odyssey does have a great accessability, I'm just saying that I think the game went overboard with the easiness of some the moons.
Sontho Jean-Baptiste That's not what you said, you said the game would be better without them entirely. You can complain about the easy moons all you want, but that doesn't mean the harder moons aren't there too, you have to get both if you want to complete it regardless.

I said the accessibility of Odyssey would remain the same if the easy moons were left out. The main campaign isn't frustrating or has a difficult spike for me personally. So the easy moons being in an overall comfortable journey was a bit overkill.
There was a missed opportunity to visit the Bean Bean Kingdom.
Maybe in a sequel
[KING KEEPER] would buy it day 1.

Before I got the game, I read everywhere that it had too many moons and that most of them were too easy to find.
I disagree because literally every single moon is fun to find.
I‘m 55+ hours into the game with 750+ moons collected and it still doesn‘t get stale.

Odyssey still perfected mario's movement though, but without a lot of platforming it feels underused

KaiserBowser27 so I'll admit I'm biased. I think they're great games and I loved galaxy when I was younger but I started to spite it because it strayed the series away from open world gameplay. Now that the series is back on track with odyssey, I ought to give it another shot. Also, Its weird but I think galaxy 2 is more fun but I still prefer galaxy 1 if that makes any sense.
But I'll try and remember to come back after playing it haha.
Also, have you played sunshine? I prefer it because of the uniqueness and the creativity along with the fast movement. (you move slowly in galaxy)

Well we'll have to wait on Metroid Prime 4 but since the reason they restarted it was because they weren't happy with the way the final product was looking then it seems ambitious is what they are shooting for. Tried the demo of Yoshi and it is definitely a fun title, if not exactly my kind of game. Fire Emblem looks extremely ambitious but we'll have to see if its all fluff and now substance in July. The Lets Go titles had some interesting ideas but I'm glad that Sword and Shield are more traditional even if I liked the pokemon sprites in the overworld. Looks good so far but we only have a little to go on probably till at least E3

This game actually made me so happy, I wanted to cry sometimes.
I had 895 moons and had beaten Bowser a second time already. I figured since I'd 100%'d the game I could finally watch this video spoiler-free. I was lucky to pause the video right before you gave away the 999 moon reward, and instantly grabbed my Switch again and played Balloon World. I bought 99 moons at once. It was so cool. I bought the last 10, and rushed back to the Mushroom Kingdom to see my reward. To be honest, I didn't feel too rewarded with the cutscene, but I was just satisfied to have completed this game. Thanks, Jirard! I love your videos btw!

Its been 4 years since the last DK title. Odds are one has been long in development, and not much has been announced for next year. (Let's be real--Metroid Prime 4 is NOT coming next year, and Pokemin is very iffy as well.)
@JaidynReiman I'm afraid they're going to make another 2D DK title because of how successful they are and since that we finally just recently got a proper 3D Mario game but who knows, I think a lot of people prefer 2D platformers to 3D and I highly doubt Nintendo is going to make all their future first party platformers in 3D. I for one hope they just decide to release Tropical Freeze on the switch for those who want a DKC game since many people didn't get to experience it on the Wii U and that they decide to do something else with the franchise for a new game.

Only 1 person so far has bothered to do a run of 100%, it was 22 hours, 10 minutes, 54 seconds. I'm positive it can be done faster, but man learning that entire game by heart will take a bit.

I just finished getting all of the unique moons. It took me five months of on and off playing. Now that I've fully explored it, I can now confirm that Odyssey is my new favorite game of all time. I thought that nothing was ever going to beat Galaxy 2.

I'm currently up to world 3 and loving so much about Odyssey. I'm right there with you Jirard with how much this game makes you cry. Every ti-EVERY TIME I hear One Up Girl it makes me cry because it just feels so good to listen to, like it captures everything about the fun and positive side of 3D Mario games. Watching you complete this game wasn't just entertaining-it was FUN. I don't know why but this video was fun to watch and I'm glad the game makes you tear up and cry as much as I do (seriously this game is so good it makes me cry more than most games I think I might be in love). You where wrong Jirard. New DUNK City is homage to Videogame Dunkey for giving Super Mario Bros 2 game of the year every year for the past decade.
I remembered that I finally completed Super Mario Odyssey. So naturally I had to watch this video (this is also a great way of confirming that I did indeed complete the game, lol). Also adding Luigi's Balloon-finding mini game helped A LOT when I needed to coin-grind.
I went the extra mile and bought 99 moons from every kingdom that had a shop in it on top of everything you did (you know, every REAL moon, every purple coin, every outfit, every music, every capture, every souvenir, etc.) I also reached rank 50 on luigis balloon world. I’ve truly done everything there is in Super Mario Odyssey. I wish there was a reward for literally doing everything possible in the game. Even if it’s something that doesn’t change the gameplay or add anything new, some acknowledgement would be nice. Like if the odyssey itself turned gold, or something like that, nothing about the game would be different but if let’s you know that the developers are grateful for your determination in truly doing everything the game has to offer.
I'm at 503 moons reached the darker side and I swear that level is going to be the end of me. Please send help!

When you capture an enemy the enemy doesn’t wear the hat you are wearing. Only the original hat is shown on its head and I really wish that wasn’t the case. Imagine a goon a wearing a captains hat. CAPTAIN GOOMBA!!!!

I didn't mind them, I just don't feel they were really necessary. They didn't add any significance to anything in particular. Don't really know why motion controls were necessary in order to do something you could've mapped a button or used analog controls for.

I beat the game with 999 moons a few weeks ago and, of course, the entire time I was like "I must collect... EVERYTHING!"
Can we all agree that Metro Kingdom had too big of a climax to only be halfway through the game?

PWNDotcom it’s good because it’s right in the middle. The game makes it very clear that Metro is a midway point too. It’s better that it was a sort of halftime show.

guys, you gotta learn to speedrun, its so fun!
this makes me less keen to buy the game. if you can 100% it so quickly it makes me doubt all the people who are telling me it's so massive and endless stuff to explore... yet apparently I could also explore and find every secret within a week. even in the video with his almost completion... 76 hours to get 999 moons and all that other stuff?? seems way to fast... and the speed run someone did of 124 moons and story complete in 88 minutes and thats just a couple days after release, I'm sure it'll be beaten.. thats pretty much a moon every 45 seconds, and the main story of the game done, in an hour and a half. that makes moons just seem WAY to easy to obtain and makes me think they'd lose value.

Thanks for sharing this Jirard, I took the jump and got this game and absolutely loved it. Unlike you, I could not be worse at video games skill wise so I was absolutely delighted that they had an assist mode. It doesn’t make it too easy, but accessible to gamers who might not have as much experience playing 3D platformers. I have NEVER been able to complete a game before because I just don’t have the skill and for the first time ever I was able to complete and enjoy a game like this!

Love the game, I also love how there's actually stuff to do with coins, I actually have to grind like mad to get them. I just completed the game for a true 100% in every aspect, worth it!

This is now alongside Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and Super Mario 3D Land as one of my favorite 3D Mario games.

Budliky CZ plenty of older players love this game. Just because you personally don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean other people won’t. I’m 37 and I think it’s very fun game. Just like I loved Mario 64 when it was released when I was maybe 14.

To be fair, in the PC version of Mario is Missing (which is honestly the most horrifying looking Mario game, so I'm sorry that it's the only game where we can see this), Luigi pulls Bowser's shell off during the ending cutscene.

Noah Davis I think Odyssey Mario and Breath of the Wild Link are going to be in Smash 5. And I didn't like that Mario used FLUDD, the water robot thing from Sunshine as his down B. It does nothing really. It's only useful if your opponent is trying to get back up the stage and you can use FLUDD to spray the water so they can't get back up on the platform.

This is my favorite game of all time. It was my first experience with a Mario game other than Mario Kart. Never got all the moons though, as I'm bad at video games. Watching this made me want to play again though!
As someone who's completed this and several other Mario games myself, I loved almost every second of this game.

idk how much he explored or if it was just grinding for coins I died a lot and i habe around 600 and have bought a few.

MonkeyMaster04 its marios game, I thought the same thing but Im pretty sure they will make Luigis mansion 2 for the switch (Dark moon doesnt count)
He could've beem included in the story though...i was hoping at 100% there would be some other ending as well. I wouldn't mind if it was a sad or good ending i just don't feel satisfied with the game's ending. My only issue is how the stuff at the end isn't rewarding to me. But thats just my opinion.
Bunyanator ya i agree Luigi should have had some type of appearance in the game. I think his costume is pretty cool though, Its what i always wear haha 😎😅
MonkeyMaster04 I know right? Luigi at least made an appearance in the Galaxy games! But then again, people are forgetting that Luigi also didn't appear with Mario, Peach and Toadsworth in Super Mario Sunshine. Sunshine took place after the first Luigi's Mansion happened, after saving Mario's behind, they should have At least invited Luigi over to Defino Plaza with them!
This game is meant to be a return to form from Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. You may notice that both of those games didn’t mention Luigi once. I think it was a kind of clever way to trace back to those games even if I am sad that Luigi didn’t make an appearance.

This is like lowkey a comfort video for me, I was a Freshman in high school when this video/game came out and today I turned 20! Though unfortunately none of my friends were free today and my brother is getting a super expensive brain surgery in a couple weeks. But this video reminds me of the good times. I call this game Marijo-Capzooie. The purple coins are notes; the enemy captures are Mumbo transformations; most importantly, you don't get kicked out after collecting each moon (jiggy).

I'm currently at 632 moons, and this is my favorite Mario game of all time! Used to be Super Mario Galaxy 2, but now that this game is out, this is it!

My biggest gripe (and this will sound dumb) was how you had to individually turn in the achievement moons.
Since I did my best to 100% the game as I went along, and didn't actually enter the castle until finishing the mushroom kingdom (mostly) I had the majority of the achievements and having to watch that "you got a moon" cut scene on a loop for like ten minutes was a bit grating.
Botw and Totk korok seeds are definitely a specific sneak attack on you from Nintendo because they know you will find them all lol
Tbh... I would rather refind all 999 moons again than 900 korok seeds cause the difference between those is that finding moons is actually fun.
I don't think the developers intended people to actually try to find all 900 korok seeds.

Those moon pipe challenges in the post game are just so so hard.
Do people think that's a hard moon? Just jump for 2-3 minutes lol. The one tht got me, and took like 20 minutes was a similar moon in seaside. I won't spoil it just in case you haven't played it.

If like to mention that Mario’s spin attack in galaxy was great for platforming.
I grew up on Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine (actually replaying Sunshine right now and remembering how terrible I am at aiming lol), but I kind of dropped off video games in general around the time the Wii came out because we never bought one and I just kind of played whatever my friends had. But then, while visiting my sister last fall, I got to play a bit of Odyssey (I made it to the beginning of New Donk CIty before flying home) and I fell in LOVE with it lol I'm really excited because after months of hoping for it to come back in stock, I finally snagged a Switch and will get to play it again soon~ I'm really excited for the castle stuff at the end lol

Odyssey is my second favorite 3D Mario the galaxy series still takes it for me.
This gives me the inspiration to finally get a switch, get Odyssey, and then complete the WHOLE game just like he did.
I just went back and watched this video. I absolutely love Mario Odyessy. It very well may be my absolute favorite game of all time. What a fantastic experience.
