    • @orion310591RS

      @@jcb208 Correct, no more protection, its Zener diode. 19:48 Marking is ".8" and part number is "BZX584C4V3-V-G". You can find schematics by that. Just one thing that Sorin almost never do, and its beneficial to really show, is to measure faulty part outside of circuit. Jokes aside, it will be pure example how faulty component looks like when measured with component tester outside of circuit.
      For single component there is always multiple parameters, with component tester we may see what is problem...
      For example if you measure diode in diode mode, you may get good reading with multimeter, but if you use component tester, then you can see it has large leakage current.
      Or ESR on capacictor... ESR is different from capacity, but they are both on capacitor.
      20:36 - Diode is still in circuit and according to zener diode usage, there is always something in parallel, so resistance shown is not the one from diode.

    @electronicsrepairschool Removing a shorted TVS diode from the PS_ID line is a common fix for this issue. The 3.3V is used to communicate a data stream between the EC and the charger within a second of connecting the charger tip to the power jack. You can see that data stream blast if you have your oscilloscope connected to PS_ID when you connect the charger tip to the jack. There are other components in the PS_ID circuit that commonly fail. However, the TVS diode is the most common culprit.

    For older Dell Latitude E-series laptops with this issue (from E6400 Core duo to E7470 Gen 7 CPU), the easy way is to purchase an old cheap PRO3X E-dock online (along with a 90W adapter if you do not already have one). The docking station bypasses the AC jack on the laptop. My 2 bad E7250 and E7450 now both charge and run faster. BIOS also indicates correct adapter wattage. The newer Latitude laptops from 7480 and up use a USB-c docking station (130W adapter required). I have not had a charging problem with a 7480 but I presume the dock may work as well.

    Dell use a onewire chip to identify the charger, it could also result in a clock down of the CPU on some models, if it recognizes that you use wrong/non-Dell charger (there is a software to get around that), and there are hacks out there to trick the Dell laptop that it is connected to the right charger. For many years Dell has had some shady business around battery warranty, quality and chargers, trying to upsell "long life" batteries that did not work much better. Due to the many battery quality issues and quirks around charging we have abandoned Dell laptops at my workplace, it costs to much to handle and results in loss of productivity for end users = loss of money.

    Since it appears that you didn't replace the faulty diode, one assumes that if the wrong charger is plugged into the laptop (again, possibly, as that may have been what stressed this diode and caused a partial failure) there will be a much more catastrophic failure? (Edited for a typo).

    • @einfelder8262

      Yep. Dodgy repair bypasses design safeguards. Customer should be advised never to use a Dell Dock, or anything other than the small capacity power brick it came with. Then hope the brick does not fail and pump a destructive voltage or current into the laptop.

    • @moldeaux
      @moldeaux 8 місяців тому +1

      Ok, but why not replace it actually? Is it hard to find? Expensive? Too much time to order and wait for delivery? Why just remove the protection and risk much worse damage next time than simply ordering and replacing that diode?
      I really try to understand the reason here, is it just being dodgy and not doing it since it already works without it?

    I had the same issue before on dell e7250/e7450 units. You can also go to bios and check power wattage reported, if it does not show wattage then its either the ID pin on the PCB or the charger.

      @parplus2556 2 місяці тому

      I just posted about my 2 bad E7250 and E7450 (of many units) where I brought out an old PRO3X E-dock yesterday (06/20/24) to finally fix the AC unknown issue. The dock bypasses the AC jack on the laptop. Now both units charge and run faster, and BIOS indicates correct adapter wattage (90W required for the dock to operate). The E-dock is cheap online and should work with all Latitude e-series laptops.

    You have been lost becasue of the routine! First of all always check in the BIOS if the charger is recognized and its proper acording to model laptop.
    Second the plug you have used was blue inside. I can only guess that you have used by mistake HP connector.
    In Dell there is 1wire comunication. You should simply check if there is communication by osciloscope.
    To be honest I have seen that using HP charger could blow up transil diode.

    Not sure why you did not just enter the bios and check if a power supply wattage has been detected correctly, because thats the first thing to check on a not charging Dell laptop. Also, if a supply has not been identified correctly, Dells usually show an error right when you turn the computer on, telling that the charger cant be identified, not sure why you skipped that part, maybe this model did not give such an error or for educational video? :)

    If removing that part made the laptop work. Why did they put the part on the MB anyways? It doesn't seem needed. I've watched many of your videos and you remove a component from a board and magic the device starts working, or you replace the component with a fuse. Why don't these devices come from the factor without these components removed or with proper fuses installed?

      Dell deliberately did this for security reasons, even though they actually wanted to sell batteries

    Daca iei 3.3V de la 3.3V power rail de pe placa de baza pt acel charger id pin si folosesti bench power supply pt a incarca bateria va functiona?

      Nu, acel 3.3 este un "average" aratat de DMM, daca pui osciloscopul pe pin vei vedea ca pe acel fir are loc o "convorbire" prin square waves.

      @@leerzeichen1910 Doar cu incarcator Dell din cate stiu. Acel semnal nu cred ca se poate emula pentru ca e vorba de niste date practic. Poate exista incarcatoare aftermarket care pot vorbi si ele, nu am cautat, dar cu power supply poti incarca bateria doar "pe direct" cum a mai aratat Sorin in trecut (intepi bateria practic) sau cu acel battery analyzer.
