    I have 2 Dell laptops (out of many) that had the AC unknown issue. Adapters work fine with other laptops; just not these 2. They are E7250 and E7450. I tried many online remedies without success. Finally brought out an old PRO3X E-dock and they both charge their batteries and indicate in BIOS the correct adapter wattage and run a lot faster. These old E-docks work for Dell models from E6400 (Core duo) to E7470 (Gen 7 CPU). Very cheap online. Just charge a spare battery to bring to school or work. NOTE: The dock requires a 90W adapter to operate (also cheap online).

    This is why I hate laptops...so hard to get in and fix something. I've got a Dell laptop from about the same year with a similar charging problem...hrm...

    There is a transistor ds2501in charger.if this damaged then replace only 2501 transistor not charger

    Pretty classic failure mode for a charging circuit or even I/O ports for that matter. It is good that they fail in this way, but it would be nice if they made it easier to fix. I also have a Dell, but not that model. Mine is an Inspirion 15 5000 series, but I am certain the internals are similarly made.

    Shame. Mouser should not charge more than a buck for the chip and a couple of bucks for the 1st class letter with the near weightless chip.

    I have seen the same charging fault in a couple of dells at work. Bad design I guess. Newer ones are USB-C so hopefully that resolves some issues.

    Please don’t confuse identification with authentication. The sense/id pins are to tell it the max power of the charger, not to confirm it is “genuine” (you said it twice)

      @@ImPretendtious exactly - ‘genuine dell charger’. It does not confirm it is a genuine dell.

      He knows the pin is used to detect the max power from the supply, that part was unnecessary. Making sure not to confuse authentication for identification was all that was necessary less it comes across as pedantic.

      The EEPROM in the charger contains not only the max power of the charger but also the *manufacturer ID and serial number*. This information is sent to the laptop over the "sense/id" pin and if any of that is missing or incorrect, the charger is deemed unknown

      @@TheRetroChannel contains it, sure… but have you checked it reads it? Last I saw they only read 3 bytes of data containing the wattage. Admittedly it was a fair few years back, but then again so is this laptop!
