  • 3 night Lapland trip to visit Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, Finland in December 2017 - we were even lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights!
We stayed in the Lapland Christmas Cottages just outside Rovaniemi, Finland, and had taster sessions on reindeer pulled sleighs, husky sleighs, and skidoos.
We had a visit to the Lapland Santa Village to step over into the Arctic Circle, and visited Santa's Lapland Post Office while we were there.
We then visited Rovaniemi Santa Park which was an underground grotto, and was treated to an elf acrobat show, made biscuits, and visited the big man himself, Santa Claus. There is even the opportunity to go to elf school!
Happy to answer any questions about a trip to Lapland, or provide recommendations or advice on booking a trip to Lapland via the comments section and I'll get back to you. I did quite a bit of research before I booked so happy to pass this knowledge on, including when to book and how to get the best Lapland trip deals.

Not sure how much it would cost for a week but we paid about £800 each for 3 days which was all inclusive and included two day trips. There is more info about the trip in the other comments that should give you more details. Highly recommend going there, worth every penny

Hi I'm looking at booking a day trip to Lapland I've got 2 to choose from on with Thomas cook goes to Santa village and the other with tui goes to Santa Park they both look lovely so I'm having trouble choosing.. what's your advice on which is best for a day trip? X

Hi, my advice would be if you could afford it to go for 3 nights if you can as the majority of the cost is the flight, and to do it in a day is a lot of travelling. When we booked I studied the prices over a long period of time, and there was no discount in booking way in advance, we left it until a month before we went (booked with Tui) and then they were offering up to 40% off then, granted you've not got as much choice then but we got lucky in the fact that there was one remaining cottage left so jumped at it. Also, we went the first week in December, which also makes it cheaper.
Having said that if you are limited to a day trip, I can't comment on Thomas Cook but Tui were excellent. Santa Village is free to visit, and Santa Park is only about 5 mins away, so there could be opportunity to visit briefly Santa Village via a taxi if you see enough of Santa Park.
Santa Village you get the opportunity to cross over into the arctic circle and get your passport stamped, you can visit the post office etc and you have the opportunity to go outside and wander around from building to building to escape the sometimes cramped inside, which is nice and everything is lit up with Christmas lights outside which gives a real 'Christmassy' feel. We stayed for about 2 hours in Santa Village, you could easily spend the best part of a day there but if you pack it in then you can see most of it in 2 hours.
Santa Park on the other hand has probably slightly less of a 'Christmassy' feel compared with Santa Village because you don't get the spectacular snow and all the outdoor lights etc as it's in an underground cave, which is still pretty cool in its own right. I think we stayed here for about 3 hours or so and we saw an elf acrobat show which was really good, then went on a slow rollercoaster / train which wanders through the elf workshops, which was good, then we visited Santa and while I was waiting the children quickly went and made biscuits. We missed out on going to elf school which sounded fun but didn't have time in the 3 hours or so we had here, so in a nutshell plenty to do here and more action packed in terms of things to do, although quite a bit of time spent queuing (bank on 20-30 mins or so each for elf school / the elf workshop train / Santa visit).
So to sum up both are good, depends on your preference, the Christmassy feel outdoors at Santa Village with all the snow at the expense of the things to do not being so action packed or impressive, or Santa Park where you don't get to wander outside as in a cave but the things to do there are more impressive.

Maybe you can even consider of coming to Oulu, the second biggest airport in Finland. You can stay here one night, then make a round trip Rovaniemi by train. It is so simple and safe. Another possibility is to travel by bus from Oulu to Syöte National Park, to Ranua Wildlife Zoo and Rovaniemi. At Syöte (Syote) there is a lot of accommodations in hotel or cottages. There is not so many tourists! I have taken a lot of pictures there. I recommend it. My photos of of a winter day at Syöte. flic.kr/s/aHskAqt3Cj

Did see some kind of giant igloo, but only opened at 12 and we were there 10-12. I'm guessing that may have been snowman world. If I was there for the day I think I would choose Santa Village over Santa Park to experience the snow and the outside, if I was only going to be in Lapland for half a day or so I don't think I would want to spend it stuck inside, therefore the outdoor aspect of Santa Village would make it the deciding factor for me

Fine! All the Finnish children like to do those things your children did at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Lapland. Well, it is a bit challenging to take video when you have kids around, even about them! But you managed well! Thank you! This is my video from the trip to Santa Claus Village from Oulu, which is nearly the same looking as Rovaniemi if it comes to the snow and ice. We have also the terribly cold sea here also!
