- Come along with me to the cottage garden, where I'll be taking care of Summer tasks such as deadheading, pruning, and weeding. After tidying up some bolted lettuce, I went on to plant fragrant herbs in planters. This week's video is slow-paced and relaxing, and I hope it inspires you to tackle any gardening tasks you have. I even got my hands on some treasure from a skip too!
The herbs I planted were:
Lavender
Immortelle
Sage
Rosemary
Thyme
Chives
Rocket salad

That red hydrangea is breathtaking!
It is my fave x
Absolutely stunning!
That deep colored huge hydrangea is the most beautiful plant I’ve seen! I have never seen one so dark. ❤️❤️❤️
It’s stunning isn’t it 😍😍
In SA i have never seen that color. Just pink and blue❤
I love it too - variety name ? ❤
@@JacquiQ
I wonder too??..
I´m gonna.try to look it up (google)...
I love it too ❤❤❤❤
You are just a lovely person. No matter what you are talking about or doing, it is a joy to watch and listen to you.
That is so kind of you, thank you x
February 15 2024 Maryland USA; To say I enjoy your video’s is an understatment. This one in particular gives a sense of transquility that is so needed. There is a neighbor with sunflowers and amazing no matter what the weather brings they stand so tall! Loving to take time and watch and take note of your garden that inspires me. You are such a lovely lady.
Beautiful garden - hope you can take time to sit with a cup of tea in your Adirondack chair (I live in New York State and have camped and hiked I those beautiful mountains) and enjoy what you’ve created.
I’ve had 2 astilbes - one dark red, one a lovely peachy color - for many years that flower very little, while my neighbor’s in similar conditions of sun and soil are glorious every year. Your viewers’ comments are leading me to believe that the neighbor’s automatic watering system is making the difference. I am not dependable enough, clearly! My zinnias in every color and shape think I’m a perfectly adequate gardener and reward me profusely.
A tip from a greenhouse worker is to put the plants where you want them and leave them in their pots and live with them for awhile and see how they do and if you like them where you’ve placed them. I always think I need to get them planted right away. I never considered waiting before 😊
As always just love your videos ❤
This is really helpful, thank you so much for sharing this x
Wow, that is a great tip. Thanks!
It makes total sense yet I'd never thought of this!
It's always nice to find treasures 👍 The illuminated greenhouse looks so cosy. Have a great week 🌻🌝🌼🌞
Giving all the autumn vibes 😍😍
I look forward to your videos every Sunday and Thursday. You’re like a breath of fresh air to us tired folk. Maybe because you’re over in Ireland and I am wishing I were there 😉… no but really, I love your garden , greenhouse and the whole shebang even down to the hedgehog door 😂. Keep doing what you do. 👍🏽❤
Wow, thank you sweetheart x
I love that you are so kind and respectful!! It should be the way life is and I love the beauty of your garden!! Can't wait to see what you do with the gutters!!
So nice of you Sue x
apples ❤ poppies sunflowers zinnias hydrangeas and many more surprises all so beautiful ❤ excellence a la Dainty
Who won? You or the ivy! When you were talking to the plant like it was human, you made me laugh. I do it too!😂
Your garden becomes more beautiful every year. Its so pretty and looks like a relaxing place to sit with a cup of tea .
Aw, thank you, so kind of you x
Good morning from California. You are so genuine and kind that it makes it easy to compliment you in the same way.
I am so inspired to do renovations of my own. I am currently scouring for items. I “will” be successful at it.
Props to you my dear for being you and inspiring the rest of us. ❤
Aw, I love this! Thank you xxx
Astilbes like shade and moist/wet soil . They are also good in the amount of sun we got this year
same here but not deep deep shade your hydrangea is absolutely gorgeous
Hi love! I found this about Astilbe hope it's helpful. My guess is the cooler the climate you live in the sunnier the position it needs to be in.
Light: Astible grows best in part shade. It can thrive in full sun, but will need shade in the afternoon in hot summer climates. In full shade, flowering will be reduced. Soil: Astilbe thrives in moist, well-drained soil that has a slightly acidic pH (6.0).
Bees, oh I can't wait. 😊♥
Isn’t it fun to sit back an look at all your hard work! 🙂👍🌻🌸🌹
Never liked astilbes much until I had success with one. It grew to be a huge plant, prolific with blooms. I’min the U.S. in the S.E. corner of Wisconsin, zone 5b. Here’s what I learned and what worked for me: my Astilbe needed more sun, didn’t like deep shade. My plant got about 4-5 hours of dappled sunlight. Not direct, hot sun. It also benefitted greatly from mulching with compost. I also use worm castings as a soil amending agent whenever I initially plant. My Astilbe also likes drainage so planting in clay was a problem. Keep amending the soil with manure (bagged/well rotted), compost, or perlite for better drainage. And they like slightly acidic soil…..threw a handful of organic sulfur at it and scratched it in around the roots. Also, watered it regularly so the efforts I went to in the soil actually benefitted/reached the plant. Once established, watering and an occasional feeding with an organic, slow release fertilizer right along with the rest of the garden was all it needed. Hopefully you’ll have the success I had and enjoy your Astilbe. 👍
I was just coming to type basically the same thing, except my astilbe get 4 around 3-4 hours of morning light. So not a great deep shade plant. And yes they like it moist and are heaven feeders. I believe they are in the rose family and it seems like everything in that group LOVES fertilizer.
The view of the lighted greenhouse in the beginning is so beautiful! I took a screenshot so I can look at it over and over. You are so creative. I love your videos and look forward to them every week. 💖
aw, I have a rainy video of it on my Instagram x
Hello! I just wanted to say that, this year, I actually sowed my zinnias in a deep pot then transplanted them into the garden. They have been magnificent all Summer and are still going strong. I love your videos ❤
"The Lazy Gardner" .. that should be your next book 😉
What a lovely vlog and so informative about your plants. I’m also in Ireland and the old rain has played havoc with my plants. All I want is a bit of colour around me. I’m 77 now and it gets harder every year but like you I use loads of pots and can move the best ones nearer to where I can see them.🎉🎉
Yea the rain was definitely not been on our side this Summer, a little bit of sun wouldn't go a miss
That deep wine Hydrangea is gorgeous. 💕🤠
I tucked my astilbe on the north side of the house and it bloomed the most of any I have ever grown: not much sun, a lot of water running off the roof, and suddenly I had a beautiful plant.
Your videos gives me hope and calm and joy, altogeter! Love them!
wow!!! That first shot is just dreamy!!
Your Garden looks Blooming Lovely now! , more so considering we have been having some warm weather.
I wouldn’t say you were a amateur gardener anymore either. 👍❤️
Love seeing your videos!! Love your garden and your kindness!!❤
Love, you deserve a grate community here, yours is truly an up lifting feel good channel. Thank you and well done.
Aw love this Cliff, always so kind x
My astilbes grow in full sun, right on the coast on the wild Atlantic Way, in really wet soil, and they are thriving !
Not sure if you would have this problem because you have an enclosed garden, but my friend did the rain gutter planting and said the deer thought it was a buffet. 😆😆😆
Your channel is truly such an enjoyable escape from the crazy world that we’re all living in , much love, from Tennessee
Thank you Connie x
G'day from Australia, excited for Spring and Summer.
Oh, the gutters from the house will make a great place to plant stuff. I love all the flowers in the yard. So relaxing to just watch and I bet even more sitting in the yard.
Catherine to the ivy branches : STOB IT ! 😂😂 that came unexpected and made laughing a lot 😅 love all of your videos ❤❤❤greetings from germany ☺🙋🏼♀
haha, those frisky ivy leaves x
What a wonderful video! I love the strawberry wall idea!!!
Thank you Catherine, as usual you have shared a lovely, relaxing, and informative video. I also grow Astilbe. We live in the southern part of New Brunswick, Canada. I have found, through trial and error, that our Astilbe grows the best with morning sun and afternoon shade. We have it growing in several places, under a tree, and in a bed with Hosta and Heuchera. We have built up the soil so that it is loamy and covered in dark mulch. This summer has been rainier than usual and the Astilbe have loved it and have full blooms. I hope that this helps. Laurie
Garden goals!! Thanks for making the Sunday Blues a little better :)
I have good luck with awhile. It likes morning sun and afternoon shade. It also is a borderline bog plant so close to a easy pond is ideal.
Your thumbnail for the video is gorgeous!
We planted gutters once and they dried out quickly because they were shallow. You’ll have to keep track of the watering. 🍓🍓🍓
We are heading to ireland September 2024 and I’m looking forward to hiking a couple of the trails you’ve shown us…
AW September is a lovely time to visit, I hope you have an amazing trip x
@@DaintyDiaries thanks I’m so looking forward to it….going to visit all my ancestral homes
Wow, Catherine! You've come a long way, baby! Especially in the garden. Lovely! God bless you!💕💕💕
Awe thank you. You are such a ady. Keep sharing. Much 💕
Strawberries take a lot of sunshine. Also, I love that hydrangea? bush that’s a beautiful color (maybe it’s not a hydrangea bush🤷♀️)
The Farmer’s Almanac says…. Astilbes prefer light to moderate shade, but deep shade will result in few and/or poor flowers; full sun will burn the tender foliage. These plants demand moist, damp soil, but also it must drain well and not puddle, which would ensure their failure.
Your garden is so beautiful all the lovely colors and I love your sunflowers
Hi Catherine. I'm loving the cut flower garden! Cosmos, Dahlias and Zinnias all great flowers😍 noticed the fully planted and growing pallet collar box too. Looks great. Great idea to reuse those rain gutters
Thanks so much 😊 yea that box is from a few videos back x
I'm in northern California, we have a Mediterranean climate... For me astilbe is definitely a shade plant, 4 hours or less sun & only morning sun or dappled shade is what works best in my climate. I grow my astilbe in with ferns & heurchera. In my experience astilbe need a fair amount of moisture in the soil, not wet but consistently moist.
Such a lovely channel you have (this is the first episode I've seen). We have a half dozen different varieties of astilbe in our pacific northwest garden and most are in partly shaded areas of the garden. The ones in the sunnier end of "partly shaded" are shaded by other shrubs during the sunniest, warmest part of the day. Even if the outermost most leaves get a tad crispy by the end of the summer, the plants return every year and reliably produce flowers. Similar to your experience, none of the astilbe planted in full sun have survived (I practice "survival of the fittest" gardening--if a plant survives and fits, it stays).
Aw I am so happy you found my channel, thanks for commenting x
Put a hydrangea plant in that shady spot in the front garden. Oyster plant also does well in the shade and is very attractive.
Green house looks so pretty all lit up. Now you have the garden looking tidy. Not to much damage. Love the deep red hydrangea and also the white ones beautiful with all your rain. Thanks for the up date. See you next week.
Lovely that your neighbors have those beautiful large trees to help shade your property. Your back garden is so pretty & just the right size.❤
Yes I love the trees, loving the borrowed landscape and so helpful for the birds x
What a relaxing and beautiful video to start my week. I loved it. I also appreciate what you said about he comment section and community here. I very rarely comment on other channels because it can be brutal but everyone here seems so nice and legit helpful.
Thank you, and I am so glad you feel safe around here to chat in the comments x
Astilbes like moist semi shade.
Mine only get morning sun for about 2 hrs.
They are difficult perenials.
Also cut back any old dead foliage qnd the flowers, make sure the top of the base stem is covered in leaf mold or mulch in winter to protect them before they start sprouting.
Add a small amount of plant food every 3 months during spring and summer...then they're bound to flower.
Jo😊
My astilbe is in partial shade, protected by a ninebark. They get very thirsty though. Your potted red hydrangea is an absolute beauty!
I think mine might be too thirsty where it is, maybe it is too dry x
Your garden looks so lovely!!
Beautiful garden and lovely video you deserve positive comments, your always a joy to watch i can't wait for your next posting and looking forward to your living wall it's bound to be amazing with your green fingers
So nice of you Alison x
Oh wow, that hydrangea! ❤ I can’t grow them successfully (yet!) so that’s amazing to see. Love the strawberry wall, I’m wanting to be doing that too 🍓🍓🍓
I love your beautiful hydrangea. I also have a red hydrangea along with a blue one. I also have a climbing hydrangea and a variegated leaf with denim and lace flowers😊my favorite. I live in the USA , north Georgia. Last winter was extremely cold and sadly not a single bloom on any hydrangea this year. My Cannas, however have had the very best year ever❣️👏 I have a purple rambling rose and a soft pink rose that was my mom’s running on a trellis that was breathtaking earlier this year. Thank you for sharing your creative videos and your gardening experiences and snippets of your life in Dublin with us🥰🤗
Wow 😍all of your flowers sound amazing!!
Hi Catherine, my astilbe do best when I remember to give them enough water. I have filtered sun, now that I thinned the tree canopy. They need some sun to flower well. Good luck!!
It's holiday today in our country so no work today and happy to see your video pop first. I love cutting flowers from my garden and makes my room colourful.
Yayyy enjoy the holiday ♥️👏 fresh cut flowers are the best 😍thanks for stopping by!
😊 I'm always excited when Thursday's and Sunday's are coming course I knew your new vid will come out. And even if I'm doing my paper works at the office I'm watching your video, but making sure my boss is not around 🤭
Yes seed your zinnias in little pots then transplant into the ground. They like full sun Hot weather. If you want big ones get the California giants. Mine were amazing this year. But I live in Florida. But so worth the try !
🎉 South Africa is also going into spring 🌼🌱 makes me so excited for all the work I put in during the winter. Love your channel because of the warm feeling I get while watching.😊
If you like Hostas and can buy them in Ireland, they LOVE the shade and are super EASY to grow and care for and come in TONS of varieties. I have deer that live around my house in the woods so I can only grow them in my back garden which is fenced in but they r really lovely perennials. Thnx for your CONSISTENTLY WONDERFUL videos! I wait each week for them to be posted. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awww thank you xxx
I never had any luck with Astilbes, and I have tried to put them on different places in and out of the sun. But I love them so much, so I keep on trying too 🥰
Beautiful pictures this vid and love watching your garden progress and change. I envy your variety of sun and shade that you have 😊
Fab seeing what new plans you have for your plants. Total bargain prices. Strawberry wall sounds fun. 👍
The garden where I used to work had some amazing, very established, astilbes and the garden was south facing - the only shade being provided was dappled due to surrounding trees
I’ve had a bit of reno work done and had plans just like yours to use bits of the old guttering! (must be something in the water🤣)
Just love your videos. RHS site says damp, bogey, shade plenty of organic matter for astibles, plus near pond.
I planted my astilbe under the canopy of a large tree.. limbed up the tree and brought in more dappled shade, mostly morning sun, so not too hot, they flowered, beautifully.. good luck ❤️❤️
You have inspired me to concentrate on my garden more, so thank you. Love from Adelaide, South Australia
Aw I’m so glad to hear that ♥️ enjoy some quality time in the garden xx
Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden.
You flower garden just gets prettier. ❤
Hi Catherine that is so great that you can upcycle the old rain gutters. Lovely video. 👍👍❤
Astilbes only need part shade from strong afternoon sun, they thrive and flower better with sun the rest of the day. Full shade will mean you get beautiful green foliage growth but no flowers.
Oh my goodness Catherine, your garden is looking great!! Yes, as Monty Don says mulching is really good for the garden. And I see you have your lovely apron that you made on. And as usual I love watching your videos, there’s always something new to learn…thank you for this 😊❤.
Aww you’re so kind ♥️ thanks for that x
Hi Catherine, I haven't seen your videos for awhile, boy has your backyard garden gotten popular, it's beautiful. I just found out that my subscription to your channel went somewhere, because you tube said I need to subscribe to your channel and I was like WHAT!!!! I have been subscribed for years, what happened. So now hopefully I'm back unless UA-cam says you are not subscribed again. Luv karyann
I enjoy so much your yard and new ideas. Motivates me to continue working in my garden….. 💪💪💪💪♥️
Great video, watching you & Karen has inspired me so much, this is the first year I have enjoyed gardening & that’s partly due to you 2 ladies ❤
Aw I am so happy to hear that x
So excited to see your strawberry wall! Love a wee bit of manifesting (free drain pipes). Red Hot Pokers love the sun. Can't wait to see your bee video. I took a wee bee course a few years ago and was tempted to get some bees but they need more looking after than I had imagined. Coming to Dublin in early October. Would be lovely to meet you, if you're free?
Astilbes... I'm in South West England so similar to you. I have dryish soil, but if I water mine in may/june, they flower well in the shade. Love what you're doing in the garden!
I cut my zinnias after the flower starts looking tattered but before is dries completely and put them in water to root. Just nip the top part of the stem back to the first set of leaves put it in a glass and in a few days there’s roots and another plant. You can also do the same with cosmos.
❤❤❤
Years ago I had a shade garden. I planted Astilbes in an area that got partial sun. They were very happy!
I always look forward to your videos. I’m so inspired to work in the garden or give a piece of furniture a refresh. Unfortunately, my garden has suffered from 40+ days of over 100 degrees (F) in Austin, Texas. I’m living vicariously through you, Catherine 😅💐🌷
A plant you might love. Is Spirea and I had very successful Astilbe in partial sun good luck 😍
Hello Catherine always love watching your videos I too always read the comments for helpful information and tips your right we can all learn from each other My niece just bees too for the first time❤
I love your apron. Mighty fancy!! Your Farren is beautiful. 😊❤
It is pretty ❤ think it was a Cricut diy from a while ago
Sunday is fast becoming my favorite day. Bloom on girl friend, bloom on. 🌻Heather
🤗❤️👍🏼
Beautiful Love your videos keep them coming!
👌💚
❤❤
Watch out, your rosemary's roots dig deep and you may have difficulty digging it out. Plant your 3 plants in 3 different areas and see which one grows best. You're an inspiration to grow a beautiful garden like yours. Keep it coming.
Lovely Catherine 😊
🥰☺️😊❤
Hi Catherine, I give my astilbe a lot of water and they seem to do well, good luck with the new batch, 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀😊
You captured magical views Catherine. 💚 your garden. Plant strawberries and flowers together. 🍓's shut down for winter. ❄ Pansy, violas, ornamentar cabbage, lettuce, and cyclamen can give you color till 🍓 come back. I'll be adding lettuce also as foliar interest and eating. Kale, beets and Swiss chard.
