Actually, about that sap: if you’re in bunny form, you continue to rise up as long as you’re holding down A. If you’re not in bunny form, you’ll only rise a little when you press or hold down A.

Like someone else said in the comments as well. It's probably The Bunny ears that made you move more easily in the honey. i remember testing it the last time i played SML2, When it came out on the GameBoy NSO.

A fun thing about the Bunny Power-Up after having done a few tests and code debugging last year:
The moment you press "A" to activate the Hover, your vertical speed is functionally zeroed at that moment. It stays like that for a few frames before going back to adding some speed for some more frames, until the "Timer" resets back and your speed is nullified once again.
Some folks have already mentioned the "Auto-Hop" functionality, but it even works underwater, strangely enough.
(7:35) As unintuitive as it may sound, I think that's actually dependent on your current powerup. Notice how Luigi had the rabbit ears earlier, and doesn't now.

I guess the rabbit ears "tap A" mechanic and the sap "tap A" mechanic unite to let you hold A?
Reminds me of SMW where you can hold A to fly with winged Yoshi if you have a Cape and mash if you don't
In all my years of playing this game, I never stopped to question the cow seal things until you pointed them out. This game has bizarre stuff in it.
You could always resort to Super Bomberman if you ever feel desperate.
In terms of where to go next, I haven't played this whole game yet but I believe you've started with what might be my favorite zone, so im just gonna go with the consensus of the comments:
Potato.
Carrot Mario has a few unintuitive controls in this game; iirc not only can you hold A to ascend in the tree sap, but holding A under normal circumstances makes him jump repeatedly. I also didn't realize how much more airtime you can get in the glide state by mashing A rather than just repressing and holding it; you can pretty easily clear that entire spiky side passage in the tree sap level that would otherwise require precise landinga on the beetles.
Apparently you can also hold up to get a full height jump from a standstill in this game; such a weird quirk.
Do the left side with Luigi, then do the right side as Mario
Something that this game does right that no other modern Mario game has managed to do is that getting/losing a powerup doesn't take away valid seconds of your time by freezing the game.
Also, you should just follow the world order... which I guess is left?
This thing with freezing when hit/buffed was likely a hardware stuttering on the NES and they kept it throughout as one of traditionally associated Mario things. Which, yeah, even to this day, Mareos are just incredibly archaic with many of its design choices

protip: in the crane game minigame if you mash a going into it you'll always win the magic carrot. which is usually what you want if you don't have it already because the game isn't so hard you need lives and it's more useful than the fire flower. 'ts pretty great

So I don't know how much of this you've already recorded, but one thing I picked up on recently is that if you happen to be holding A while you're Rabbit Mario when landing on solid ground, Mario will automatically jump, which he can't do with any of the other powerups. ...Why you'd want to do this _intentionally_ is a mystery.

I loved this game when I played it in my 3ds years ago, the music is still in my head
My personal recommended next stage is Turtle Zone. Best to get it out of the way while you still have to discuss the swimming controls, given the zone is otherwise very unremarkable. It'll give you something to actually talk about there if you do it before any other water level comes up.

I liked Wario Land 1. But it didn’t like that it strayed quite far from the Mario Land formula. But on the bright side, if you count Wario Land 2, 3, 4 and Shake It as Mario Land 4, 5, 6 and 7, it’s technically the Mario Platformer series with the most games.

Finally, someone who agrees that this game controls uncomfortably! This wound up being my least favourite 2D Mario on gamefeel alone (Land 1 is short so I can tolerate it). I always felt disappointed that I couldn’t enjoy it, cause it’s so full of personality otherwise.

Anyway, heavily agree with the other comments, the Potato Zone seems the most appealing.

Yes.
I wash my hands in my kitchen sink all the time, what are you on about? Especially while I'm COOKING A MEAL, you know, a thing that regularly happens in a kitchen and requires handwashing? Anyways, I like the bell midpoints and goals, this is a pretty cute game overall. And, say what you will about Super Mario Land 1, it has pretty bangin' music.
I maintain that using dish detergent for hand washing is weird

yeah it's one of those things where the flight powerup helps with something. and in this it's to make goo sap honey earwax traversal better
also i don't remember if this game is what introduced holding up to jump higher, maybe it was just wario land tho
