Goodness, this is incredible. To think that I have been a huge fan of prog rock for close to 45 years now, and being 63 years of age...and just recently gotten into this band. It's beyond criminal. But I am making amends as quickly as I can. Thank you Eric De Rosa for your amazing upload!! Tim here in Essex County in Southwestern Ontario, appreciates it immensely.
Better late than never. Godbluff will blow your mind.
Essex ? .... Isn't that the western southern point of Ontario, like between London & Wondsor ?
Do you know the 2 Fantastic albums from Sloche ?
1- J'un Oeil 1975
2- Stadaconé 1976
I told my sister this was a young David Bowie and she believed me
😂😂😂
It could have fooled me.
The Van who fell to Earth...
"Peter Hammill's great. A true original. I've just liked him for years. If you listen to him, his solo albums, I'm damn sure Bowie copied a lot out of that geezer. The credit he deserves, just has not been given to him. I love all his stuff".--John Lydon
The voice, this marvellous voice...
I saw VDGG around the time this album was released at the Sheffield city hall. They had second billing after Lindisfarne and above Dr Strangely Strange. Bottom billing went to an up and coming band called Genesis. I wonder what happened to them. The ticket price I seem to remember was 17Shilling and 6 pence. 4 hours of great entertainment for under a £.
Would have loved to have seen that gig. Sheffield City Hall was my second home in the 70's.
Wow
Van Der Graaf Generator were always top-tier prog. Lyrical gold ontop of unparalleled musical prowess. Peter Hammill was a mad scientist of progressive rock. 11/10!
fully agree
Is that a rating or a time signature for your comment?
Amen to that. I recently read about John Lyndon bigging him up in the late 70s stating that Bowie "owed" Hammill .
Lydon , who was also into Bowie , did say that , but there is no basis in it . I doubt very much whether David Bowie was even aware of Peter Hammill , let alone VDGG , in those early days . Bowie was much more interested in the likes of Lou Reed and Scott Walker .
@@ThefightingCelt Didn't Bowie once describe himself as "the poor man's Peter Hammill", or is that apocryphal?
never heard a single song of this band, and i'm really glad i changed that today. finding a new band to listen to is a very nice christmas present :)

Love this band since forever... Such a great album/band. Cheers from Brazil.
Eu conheci a pouco tempo.

ETERNOS!!!
AEROSOL GREY MACHINE a huge engin to promote progressive music ! Never forgotten, but never mentioned enough ...
Big fan here. Hearing this album for the first time. Very British, psychedelia. The Least We Can Do.........was a step in the right direction.
This has a definite '60s vibe compared with the later albums. The later ones might be "better" in some ways, but in terms of mood and feeling, I really enjoy this one.
I find that quite a lot of '69 albums are like that. Caught in the transition from 60's to 70's I guess. We got some fantastic albums that year, I believe '69-'74 was the peak of music. Mid-late 70' seems a bit lacking of something to me.
the same with Genesis
In my (one) year of university study in 1971, I often frequented a student pub where "underground" music was played, as this style became initially known to me. It was an eyeopener at the age of 18, having been raised in a smaller village. I'm pretty sure that this particular album was a regular there, it would have fitted in perfectly.
I cannot even begin to describe how beautiful a song "Afterwards" is. I remember the late 60's. This song brings me back. I become a six year old again. It is very bittersweet. A time that is long gone, never to return again.
It was too beautiful for an innocent kid watching Viet Nam unfold on the telly. Something was wrong in my little utopia. Hammill reminds me everytime I hear this, how lucky I was to be safe with my first bicycle and tonka toys. It did not last. Nothing ever does.

Love Octopus! Love them! SO fortunate to to have seen and met them twice and Peter Hammill 3 times! Such great drumming too!
V.D.G.G's. music never gets old.
I was born in 1972 I've been listening to this band since 1988. This album is the only one that truly brings me back to the 60"s, without having to be there. But it's like deja-vu. Eerie
Deja-vu by CSN&Y?
Grazie. Enzo57 Italy
Ehi Enzo! La sua anima musicale è preziosa
A simply fabulous album! So deep, so sweet, so true!
A pleasant surprise to hear the alternate recording of "Ferret and Featherbird" between the two album sides. Must be a CD bonus track.
Amazing to think how young they were when this album first came out. Find myself drawn back to VDGG time after time
21 for P.H. is not so young back in the sixties.

Octopus Is incredible for intensity and dramaticaly a piece of real art
In 1970 (aged 16), a school mate mentioned he was only into non-commercial bands and listed VdGG -- then I saw a vinyl copy of "H to He... " in a second hand record shop, so bought it and never looked back -- such an amazing band !
Ordered all their records from Cobb at Wolverhampton.
this band is criminally underrated

WORK OF ART
this is the VERY best vdgg album for sure - raw psychedelic atmospheric really burns into ones ears and brain - the following 6 are top notch as well, but this one is the king over the others
Van Der Graaf Generator - The Aerosol Grey Machine (Full Album) - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - The Aerosol Grey Machine is the debut studio album by English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator.
All hail VDGG!!!
Peter, you are still a GOD in my opinion!!!
Thank you, for everything you do!!!
This one came out on 1969 (I was on my teens by then). Two years latter, they released "Pawn Hearts" an album with just three songs (one on "side A", two on "side B") setting the pattern for Yes album "Close to the Edge", published the following year.
Technically, Pink Floyd came before VDGG. Other than that, carry on.
Technically, do you feel better about yourself now Andy!?
Other than that, get a life.
If as you wrote and published: 'Before Pink Floyd, there was VDGG'. How do you account for:?
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) Released 5th August 1967. Recorded 21st February - 2st1 May 1967. EMI, London.
A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) Released 28 June 1968 Recorded 9th May 1967 - 3rd May 1968. EMI, London..
More (1969) Released 13 June 1969 Recorded January-February 1969. Pye, London.
Ummagumma (1969) Released 7th November 1969 Recorded 27th April and 2nd May 1969. EMI, London.
This should be fun to read! Will he account and explain in terms of some form of Space Dimensional Time Warp Difference (SDTWD). Something from 'The Outer Limits' or an entirly original fantasy?

Beautiful! I honestly don't know how they do it. It's just a shame that more people don't know about them or Hammill's solo stuff, but as least those who know can enjoy it peacefully anytime they want thanks to UA-cam. I don't know what I'd be listening to if I hadn't found this genre, it's all I enjoy.
Still listening! This is one of my favourites to come back to. This, Pawn Hearts, Fool's Mate, H to He, In Camera... they're all great!
Absolutely. Masterpieces all. 👌

First time I have heard this. Very good indeed. Love that bass work - pity he moved on so quickly. And Hugh Banton's organ is superb. Actually better than some of their later stuff.
Great drumming too!
First effort from Peter Hammill & Associates. The result is outstanding, even more if you consider that it was recorded in one long, long session. It is genuine and a bit naif, and it promises what was coming. Wonderful start.
Not according to wikipedia:(January 1969, 31 July - 1 August 1969). It looks like it was spread out over at least three days.
+Mike Reiss My assumption would be that one track (no idea which one) was recorded in January and the rest was recorded in a long overnight session.
@@Babyboss65 Afterwards and Necromancer were recorded in Jan by VdGG , the others with the intention to make a Hammill solo album in that one session, but with the same musicians. It seems when the album then was released as the first VdGG album 2 of the songs were skipped in favour of the 2 earlier recorded songs. Most of the songs were played live by the band anyway, so in the end it is in one way or another the truly first band album.
Yes they were super
Philippe you are great!!!
The great David Jackson is thereupon I like sax. The first time I saw them live, blew me away
"But the closing of the door is never easy ..." ( Into a game). For afficionados: pay attention to some proto-Godbluff stuff enclosed in this song.
SO GLAD PETER revisited Ferret & Featherbird a few years later for his In Camera album. I had never heard this original version until a few years ago and i don't care for it at all. Perhaps because i've known the In Camera version since '77ish. Also, it wasn't on the albums I had. Must have come out with re-issues, etc.

Yeah Peter Hammill said when interviewed on Cherry Red TV if this was a VDGG album or a solo album? He said it was actually his solo album and explains the reasons why it came out as a VDGG album. Check the interview out it's up on UA-cam.
Thanks for the upload! :)
Thank you for posting this. Here I am in Dec. 2021 watching the world fade away. I was lucky enough to see VDGG a few times. They never get the recognition deserved of them. Peter Hammil worked with so many people and really many Proggers have no idea who he is. Ugh.
And now the world's back, and they're on tour...
Van Der Graff even on this formative and great album were showing how original , uncomprimising and inventive they were . The classic albums were yet to come but this debut showed how great a band on the progressive scene they were destined to be .
Van der Graaf before David Jackson joined. From memory it was a guy called Jeff on flute. My first VDGG album. Still love it. Great songs, super musicianship and Mr Hammill 's unique voice. A taste of things to come. I believe there are various versions of this.
Jeff Peach was only on one track("running back") according to wikipedia.
@@mikereiss4216 That was before this version was released, with Ferret and Featherbird - pretty sure JP plays flute on that cut as well.
