I was amazed when I saw this band on stage in the early 70's in Paris at the Bataclan . I was a teenager. VDGG and Peter Hammill are among the best creative artists I ever heard.
Van Der Graaf...................................it has been 46 years since i saw Generator for the first time. was in New York City. this is a group of most blessed people who just love to share with all of us their pure talents. thank you for all you do for me.
+Jordana Meister Sadly, today, only crappy artists are elevated to stardom, though, in all fairness, there seem to be a renewed interest in bands like VDG and Gentle Giant (another favourite of mine), while King Crimson are still kicking ass!
Hey are so right about that. They deserve a higher place as pioneers. Got all CD from VdGG and the all collection of the brilliant and unique PETER HAMMILL
As the Promoter for Germany in this time we had a lot of Interview's and meetings with Peter Hammill in our office working for EMI germany. Peter is a great person and musician!
I've had the [privilege of interviewing Peter Hammill twice. On both occasions, he was patient, kind and gave thoughtful and insightful answers to even the most inane questions from this nervous interviewer. A true gentleman.
I am happy that they are getting some recognition, although I am sure they deserve more. Their music is truly unique and they are one of the most creative bands from the 70's
Absolut fantastically! Van der Graaf Generator is one of the most intelligent and vigorous bands ever. Hammill is a great poet and a still impressive singer. Many thanks for posting this imperishable concert!
I just found this, having eating a meal and enjoyed some wine. Sometimes, life is bliss! Great to see the guys still playing this stuff - and wonderful to see David Jackson doing his thing again... Quite set me up for the working week.
All the magnificant innovative and intelligent musicans that was my big fan in the start of the seventies. AND I had the pleasure of having them all iin my dining room in Norway, one night, about 30 years ago. Always remenber! I was "bergtatt" when i first heard "The Least we can do is wave to ech other". NME (New Muscial Express, was writing. "One of the best LP´s ever released" I agree even to day. But "Pawn Hearts" and "He to he wo am the only one" magnificant, comlicated, before their time.
Glad I found this. Have been a VdGG / Hammill fan since 1971. Wish it was the full show that people have mentioned, but what's here is magic. Man - Erg is truly majestisc and Peter was on form as were Guy, Hugh and David. What a truly monstrous music machine they are !
Still alive and kicking, putting out new AMAZING stuff in 2016, some 48 YEARS alter their debut (!!!). Unprecedented in rock music, unbelievable for the LONG TIME DEAD progressive scene. "D.N.D." is the best we can get from pop/rock. All of'em MASTERS
The video is great, though it`s not complete show. The songs were not played in that order, as well. The actual setlist was: The Undercover Man Scorched Earth Every Bloody Emperor Lemmings Darkness (11/11) Childlike Faith In Childhood's End The Sleepwalkers Nutter Alert Man-Erg Killer Wondering
No pyrotechnics, but such passion and skill! They work so well as a unit, it's as if they just open a door and let the music through. A real union of minds and hearts.
Not the complete show though, but the complete first broadcast on 15 January 2006 Germany, 23.30pm GMT, WDR TV "Rockpalast". This short version was aired first, while the complete show on 5 November 2005 was over 1 hour 50 minutes!
I havan't had time to watch the whole concert yet but I just watched Sleepwalkers and it blew me away. I love how this film shares the spotlight among all four musicians. You know that bald guy at the back of the stage, the one people mention the least? Well you can see him clearly here holding the act together like Loctite super glue. You can see exactly where the group's legendary chaos comes from. And you can see how Hugh Banton can hold his own against any keyboard player in rock but puts all that talent uniquely at the service of the band. And if that's not enough, there's also that singer guy who's not too shabby.
Like the first light of dawn, this music opens your eyes to new promises and to all the wonders of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken the loves, the skinned lives and torpor of tormented watchmen 💫
I just love this so much.Waching it again, I am even more impressed. First time, I thought the vocals needed more reverb, delay... Now it just sounds so straight in your face, and the musicians are right in there, playing as a band that understands and feels the music. Totally cosmic! I wish I could see them live, and my admiration has been there since I bought the "He." album back then. Thanks for the movie, groovie!
Many musically accomplished bands are let down by the quality of the vocals. This is not the case with VdGG, Peter Hammill's vocals have always been very important to the band. I've been a fan since "The least we can do is wave to each other". They were my favouite band in the 70s.
The only drummer that played to a similar effect, although their styles were different enough to make them not really imitators, was B.J. Wilson! They both put out an abundance of passion, energy, and honesty into their drumming. They orchestrated and coloured the music ,almost like a painting, whilst support ing it. I wholeheartedly support Doug and Marta's comments. In summation, two drummers way at the top of their game with oodles of style, class, and irreplaceable drum riffs, fills, and rhythms.Their unique ness is pretty much untouchable. They definitely bring slot of personality to their drumming! I do wonder why Guy Evans work is not noticed personally so much! To me it clearly stands out, whilst still respecting and supporting the other players with very much due consideration.I think Guy knows the high value of his contribution. Peace Out !
Of course I know of Van Der Graff Generator from being in the UK in 1974 when Nicky Horne played Refugees on his Your Mother Wouldn't Like It radio show which I recorded every night while I was in living in the loft at the converted horse stables at Shantock Manor. I have written six million or more words for refugees and help hundreds obtain residence in Australia. There song of refugees going to the west always encouraged me in my wiork and in my drift to living in the western part of Victoria.
David Jackson did everything the lead guitarist does in every other band, and so much more. It all fits together so naturally it's easy to forget how unique this lineup was.
GravyDaveNewson His work with the sound beam alone would fully justify his existence then there is his session work with the like of Peter Gabriel, and a good number of solo recordings that are worth collecting. The CD of him live with Nic Potter is really essential.
NOT going to pay any attention to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame anymore -- until each & every one of these men are inducted. Van der Graaf Generator is superlative. Heavy metal progressive art rock genius when most wannabes were in diapers. Not a guitar led band -- who needs it when you have a soaring genius fiery reeds player in the Roland Kirk tradition: David Jackson. Hammill's vision, like Robert Fripp & King Crimson. Even Fripp knew this by appearing on H to He.
Wonderful concert. More energetic and profound than the studio versions IMHO, especially with Hammill and Jackson. What happened at 42:43? A glitch of the recording device, probably?
Great concert. I have seen this one in de Melkweg in Amsterdam. See my Van Der Graaf Generator All Album show on my own You Tube channel Harold's Prog Rock Show.
I was amazed when I saw this band on stage in the early 70's in Paris at the Bataclan . I was a teenager. VDGG and Peter Hammill are among the best creative artists I ever heard.

Steven Macanka ....also in It@ly..we ❤️ Peter and your band TOO great VDGG!!.....Hi Steven!
Hello right back at you. thanks.
Peter Hammill is a genius, so are Guy, Jackson and Hugh. This band should be up high in any rock and roll discussion.
+Jordana Meister Sadly, today, only crappy artists are elevated to stardom, though, in all fairness, there seem to be a renewed interest in bands like VDG and Gentle Giant (another favourite of mine), while King Crimson are still kicking ass!
The actually get a lot of recognition amongst the young prog and general underground music crowd.
This music was never meant to be mainstream though.
Hey are so right about that. They deserve a higher place as pioneers. Got all CD from VdGG and the all collection of the brilliant and unique PETER HAMMILL
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Chapter by Chapter / Verse by Verse !!!!!!!
They are great..no doubt...but most of People doesn't agree
As the Promoter for Germany in this time we had a lot of Interview's and meetings with Peter Hammill in our office working for EMI germany. Peter is a great person and musician!
Ist gut, ich habe Hammill auch oefter getroffen, der mensch ist real und VDGG ist eine gute band, mit und ohne Jackson welcher auch tolle dinge macht.
I've had the [privilege of interviewing Peter Hammill twice. On both occasions, he was patient, kind and gave thoughtful and insightful answers to even the most inane questions from this nervous interviewer. A true gentleman.
@dan coleman That is not funny, my dear
I had no idea who Peter Hammill was until recently now it's all I've been listening to. 😂
I saw them live in 1975 Victoria London as 19 y old guy from a communist country - incredible concert and experience
What a band! No one really compares to them. Hammill is a genius.
Their sound combines free jazz and classical music.
Jeepers Creepers !!! How impressive is this ? Even Merglys III (or is it IV by now ?) gets a work out. Superb !
No band has ever created and will never create such a unique sound, VDGG deserves all credit and admiration!

This is one of my "Top Ten" bands ever.
I just found this, having eating a meal and enjoyed some wine.
Sometimes, life is bliss!
Great to see the guys still playing this stuff - and wonderful to see David Jackson doing his thing again...
Quite set me up for the working week.
There was a time when the music was music and poetry....thx VDG for all your work
There was a time when more was felt than known..............VdGG getting some much deserved coverage.
So ridiculously awesome. I wish I could've seen them on this tour. Such an underrated band, but, one of my favorites!
David Jackson is a must for VDGG!!! He has to be back in the group!!!
Didn't David leave VDGG on his own? He seems to want to walk his own way lately.
Glad I found this. Have been a VdGG / Hammill fan since 1971. Wish it was the full show that people have mentioned, but what's here is magic. Man - Erg is truly majestisc and Peter was on form as were Guy, Hugh and David. What a truly monstrous music machine they are !

The on.y thing that is long dead is your ability to find good new music.
peter hammill has such a unique way to 'sing', love it! great show
The video is great, though it`s not complete show. The songs were not played in that order, as well. The actual setlist was:

una pietra miliare... una leggenda del Rock Prog.... grazie Peter per questa musica superlativa che sei stato in grado di donarci!!!!
Hot Dang, VdG sound just as remarkable now as they did in there hay days, way to go lads.
Great Rock Revelations...Still Going And Inspiring For Future Generations !...

From the beginning to this reunion.....

The two saxophones still amaze me

Guy Evans holds it all together and just in time!
Una de las propuestas musicales más innovadora, revolucionaria, progresista e incomprendida en la historia del rock.....

such great! love this band, amazing presentation! thanks!
Simply the best. Love it
simply fantastic! best version of man erg ever

IMMENSI VDGG. SEMPRE DA BRIVIDO!
...o Van Der Graaf é igual a vinho,quanto mais Velho melhor. É muito emocionante vê-los tocando😍👍👍👍
huge guy evans fan
the most underrated drummer in the history of the humanity.....jazz and rock ....
The only drummer that played to a similar effect, although their styles were different enough to make them not really imitators, was B.J. Wilson! Four geniuses!
Wow! I watched the whole thing. They played so well. :)
Always a pleasure to enjoy vdgg. Fan since the very begin. "Rock& Ro^le. Chamelon in the shadow of night.
Mi banda favorita de todos los tiempos! Jamás los he visto en vivo.
Thank you ! Age and music get better with each year !

On top of their game, ace performance! Thanks for the upload :)
A band that rocks without guitars!
I wish PH would release this show as an official DVD, as the quality is top, bot in view and music
damn his voice never gets old
Thanks so much for the Upload, it looks brilliant and the sound is perfect...I kinda like these guys...:)
This is remarkable, I can't believe my ears!
Wow. I've always wondered what this band was like live...all I can say is Wow yery impressive especially David Jackson!!
Danke.. dass es Euch gibt !🎉
Fantastic, great quality!!! Thans for posting!
V r.1972 som začínal na "dobrej"!hudbe,ajVdgG☮️🎼🎼....
Jaxon! You have to love Jaxonsax!!
David Jackson did everything the lead guitarist does in every other band, and so much more. It all fits together so naturally it's easy to forget how unique this lineup was.
He was such an integral part of the VDGG sound. Things have certainly gone downhill since they parted company. The trio suffers hugely by his absence.
Peter Hammill ha ancora una bella e particolare voce ed eccezionale anche il sassofonista
those guys r way ahead or time
why cant we listen the greatest
Release this concert on DVD or bluray NOW!
Si los hay!!! Me regalaron una copia. El original si existe. Saludos.

I'm sure as a three piece they'll put on a great show, but without Jackson there's a huge chunk of VDG missing.
Another Generation Of Progressive Rock...A Living Machine !...
Jackson was the heart and soul of this band.
of course, that's why his solo career has been so stellar
GravyDaveNewson Difficult to be a heart and soul without the body. They need each other.
GravyDaveNewson His work with the sound beam alone would fully justify his existence then there is his session work with the like of Peter Gabriel, and a good number of solo recordings that are worth collecting. The CD of him live with Nic Potter is really essential.
There are so many sax players out there having great careers on the Jazz circuit, I do wonder why he isn't one of them. He's has the chops!
uapuat I don't know. Perhaps his style is a bit too individualistic? Isn't he playing anywhere?
Beautiful and unique sounding band !😍
as good as ever! thanks for this!
More "Rockpalast"-video's please. We used to stay awake in Nijmegen in the Netherlands and watch it all night during the Rocknights.
Rockapalast still made shows??? I'm more amazed they produced this than the VDGG reunion
Simplesmente espetacular!

Same ,this is my first time too✨!
Superconcert even after so many years !

Wonderful concert. More energetic and profound than the studio versions IMHO, especially with Hammill and Jackson.

Guy Evans, Mister Golem !
under rated band indeed
Great! Top Progressive Rock 🎸
thanks for sharing !
Incomparable sax , it makes me cry :)
